New York, 1962. The downtown folk scene. Solo singers, duos and trios are playing the Gaslight and cutting and releasing records. And the talented, abrasive Llewyn Davis is getting beaten to a pulp in the back alley... again. Like all of the greatest films of Joel and Ethan Coen, this one is many things at once: visually and verbally virtuosic, tonally complex, beautifully constructed, peopled with larger-thanlife characters and ultimately magical. With Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake, Garrett Hedlund, F. Murray Abraham and - unforgettably - John Goodman as a foul-mouthed, bombastic jazz musician. The glorious score of folk standards was lovingly curated by T. Bone Burnett.

Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Matthew McConaughey

Martin Scorsese's new film tells the real-life story of a high and hard-living stockbroker, Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio), who made millions of dollars through securities fraud and eventually spent 22 months in jail for it. The director gives us a bird's-eye view of early-'90s Wall Street excess, replete with yachts, women, and massive cocaine habits. Despite the period accoutrements - tortoiseshell glasses, over-the-shoulder yuppie sweaters, and garish ties - Scorsese's tale of greed and financial malfeasance offers many parallels to the current economic climate. Entertainment Weekly

Dir: Arnaud des Pallières France 2013 122m Starring: Mads Mikkelsen, Sergi López, Denis Lavant

In 16th century France, enterprising horse farmer Michael Kohlhaas runs afoul of a venal baron, who attempts to shake down the merchant as he crosses the nobleman’s woods on the way to market. After events escalate, he raises an army and wages a war against the baron, who soon sues for peace. But with the clergy and courts adjudicating, will Kohlhaas win the war and lose the peace? Arnaud de Pallières’ adaptation of Heinrich von Kleist’s 1808 novella explores a fault line between medievalism and modernity.

LA BELLE ET LA BÊTE

KISS THE WATER (PG) For decades, on the edge of the Scottish coast, the enigmatic Megan Boyd learned and perfected the obscure craft of fly-making for fishermen. She twirled bits of feather, fur, silver, and gold into elaborate fishing flies, at once miniature works of art and absolutely lethal. Hailed as some of the best flies ever made, they have garnered her and her techniques an almost cult status. Eric Steel captures the beauty and mysticism of Boyd and the fly-fishing art in this lyrical documentary.

AGE OF UPRISING: THE LEGEND OF MICHAEL KOHLHAAS (15)

American Hustle is based on the true story of the FBI’s long-term ABSCAM sting operation. Like many of David O. Russell’s films, Hustle follows an uneasy bond between two parties. Con artist Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale) is forced to cooperate with high-flying and high-permed FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper) in his investigation. Irving’s live-wire wife Rosalyn (Jennifer Lawrence) and con partner Sydney (Amy Adams) are pulled into the operation, and corrupt Mayor Carmine Polito (Jeremy Renner) navigates the rivers of bell-bottoms and one-piece dresses trying to stay afloat as the games become far more serious. www.filmindependent.org

12 Years A Slave is based on an incredible true story of one man’s fight for survival and freedom. In the preCivil War United States, Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man from New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. In the twelfth year of his unforgettable odyssey, Solomon’s chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist (Brad Pitt) forever alters his life. Chicago International Film Festival

Based on a remarkable autobiography, The Railway Man tells the extraordinary and epic true story of Eric Lomax, a British Army officer who is tormented as a prisoner of war at a Japanese labour camp during World War II. Decades later, Lomax discovers that the Japanese interpreter he holds responsible for much of his treatment is still alive and sets out to confront him, and his haunting past. A powerful tale of survival, love and redemption.

FROZEN (PG) 108m 1 DAY ONLY

With the 70s behind him, San Diego's top rated newsman, Ron Burgundy, returns to take New York's first 24-hour news channel by storm.

Starring: Idris Elba, Naomie Harris

Idris Elba is magnetic as the legendary South African freedom fighter in this rousing adaptation of Nelson Mandela’s autobiography LONG WALK TO FREEDOM. Uncovering Mandela’s extraordinary life from his childhood in a rural village through to his inauguration as the first democratically elected President of South Africa, the film tells the truly epic and inspiring story of a man who loved his country so much, he transformed himself into the very embodiment of its greatest hopes.

Dir: Joel & Ethan Coen United States 2014

Idris Elba is magnetic as the legendary South African freedom fighter in this rousing adaptation of Nelson Mandela’s autobiography LONG WALK TO FREEDOM. Dir: Joel & Ethan Coen United States 2014

FROM FRI 10

Dir: Joel & Ethan Coen United States 2014

MANBORG

NOTTINGHAM ANGLO-FRENCH SOCIETY

Dinah Sheridan

A charming, gentle car rally comedy, Genevieve was a huge box office hit in its day and perfectly captured the polite English romanticism of the early 1950s. Underneath the naivety and quaint sexual bickering of the four leads lies a superbly hand-crafted film, beautifully portraying an England that has long since vanished. WELCOME TO BRIAN’S 80TH BIRTHDAY BASH

This 10 week course will analyse a different decade of the 20th century each week to ‘archaeologically’ examine how film has reflected the changes in culture, society and politics. Starting with examples of films from the 1910s, we will discover the history of the 20th century as told through film; including how the war years were portrayed at the cinema, the social and sexual revolutions of the 60s, the political landscape of the cold war and bringing our understanding up to date by examining how 21st century cinema reflects anxieties around technology and terrorism. If you would like to know more about the history of film or are simply interested in social and cultural history, then this course is for you. THE WAY WAY BACK

Hard to believe but it’s thirty years since the Coen boys burst spectacularly on the scene with their dark and twisted modern noir, Blood Simple. The brothers somehow straddle both arthouse and commercial cinema - like the Dude’s rug, they tie the room together. The arrival of any Coen Bros film is a much-anticipated event and to mark the release of the acclaimed Inside Llewyn Davis, we’re spending a full day poring over the best of their three-decade output.

The hilariously retro-fitted, cyborg fuelled homage to the cult cinema of the 80s is back by popular demand. The armies of hell have taken over the world and only one half-man/half-robot hero can save us from Draculon and his underling, The Baron. Hysterical Sci-Fi shenanigans guaranteed.

The funny and poignant coming of age story of 14-year-old Duncan’s summer vacation with his mother and her overbearing boyfriend. Having a rough time fitting in, the introverted Duncan finds an unexpected friend in gregarious Owen, manager of the Water Wizz water park. Through his funny, clandestine friendship with Owen, Duncan slowly opens up to and begins to finally find his place in the world.

MY MOVIE

2013 produced a great crop of American indies and we’ve pulled our personal favourites together in this season.

The area we’re covering is called Film Hub Central East, spanning twelve counties from Nottinghamshire to Essex. That’s a potential audience of over ten million people and more than three hundred venues, which is why we’re pleased that we’ll be working with plenty of partners such as film archives, education specialists, rural film networks, local cinemas and film societies.
