Henry and Maria have taken their three young sons to Thailand to spend Christmas 2004 at an idyllic beachfront resort. The family is playing outside by the pool when a tsunami hits the shore, laying waste to everything in its path. Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona utilizes 3D sound technology - although the film is in 2D - and seamless effects to immerse the viewer in the terrifying life-and-death struggle to survive the rush of water and debris. AFI FESTIVAL
The King’s Speech’s Tom Hooper directs this adaptation of Cameron Mackintosh’s successful musical version of Victor Hugo’s classic novel. The drama surrounds the obsessive quest of Inspector Javert (Russell Crowe) as he spends years in an effort to capture escaped convict Jean Valjean. Hugh Jackman also stars alongside Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, and Sacha Baron Cohen.
Six years ago in the Palestinian farming community of Bil’in, Emad Burnat purchased a video camera to record the birth of his son. This joyous moment, however, coincided with the invasion of Israeli bulldozers set to make way for Jewish colonists. Burnat joined in with his town’s peaceful resistance against the advancing settlers, documenting his involvement with the five titular cameras that became casualties of the border conflict. A brilliant, wrenching, devastating film, not to be missed.

What Richard Did follows Richard Karlsen, golden-boy athlete and undisputed alpha-male of his privileged set of South Dublin teenagers, through the summer between the end of school and the beginning of university. The world is bright and everything seems possible, until one summer night Richard does something that destroys it all and shatters the lives of the people closest to him. Irish Film Festival London
Starring: Nadezhda Markina , Andrey Smirnov
David Strathairn
Elena has a late-in-life marriage with wealthy Vladimir. Each has grown children from previous relationships, but Vladimir resents having to provide financial aid to Elena’s unemployed son. As Vladimir’s health declines, and he makes plans to leave everything to his own offspring, Elena must decide between her loyalty to her husband and her allegiance to her own flesh and blood. Part domestic thriller, part morality play, Elena delivers an intense and haunting experience.
Steven Spielberg directs Daniel DayLewis in Lincoln, a revealing drama that focuses on the 16th President’s tumultuous final months in office. In a nation divided by war and the strong winds of change, Lincoln pursues a course of action designed to end the war, unite the country and abolish slavery. With the moral courage and fierce determination to succeed, his choices during this critical moment will change the fate of generations to come.

Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio and Samuel L. Jackson star in Tarantino’s follow-up to Inglorious Basterds, a “Southern” about a slave who teams up with a bounty hunter to find his wife while tracking down a murderous pair of brothers. Trademark Tarantino: fun, talky and super violent. “Brutally hilarious spaghetti comedy does for business what Basterds did for war.” David Ehrlich

Jamie Foxx
Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio and Samuel L. Jackson star in Tarantino’s follow-up to Inglorious Basterds, a “Southern” about a slave who teams up with a bounty hunter to find his wife while tracking down a murderous pair of brothers. Trademark Tarantino: fun, talky and super violent. “Brutally hilarious spaghetti comedy does for business what Basterds did for war.” David Ehrlich

Robert Guédiguian begins his new work with the retirement party of Michel, a former union rep. When thieves burst into his home and steal his money, Michel suspects that one of the assailants might have been a former co-worker, but can a good socialist condemn a poor man for doing what he must to provide for his family? Engaging, affecting, and never afraid to show its political heart.

ALPS
Director Giorgos Lanthimos, who put the Greek ‘Weird Wave’ on the map with the biting black comedy Dogtooth, returns with another warped vision of lives on the periphery of a society in decay. Alps follows a secret club whose members are paid to act as replacements for the recently deceased - going into their homes, impersonating them, getting uncomfortably intimate with the bereaved. It’s part therapy, part theatre, with more than a hint of prostitution. It’s a disturbing imitation of life, but a fascinating one. Sydney Film Festival

To complement What Richard Did.
A comedy about a thirty-something couple living a rather dull life in the Norwegian countryside. Then new neighbours move in next door, and while at first they seem to be their mirror image, the differences that do exist manifest in increasingly disturbing ways. Sexual adventure, secrets, racial and ethnic stereotyping, and choral ability are all factors in a sweet, sad story that encourages laughter rather than tears. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize for World Cinema at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival.

Twelve-year-old Simon lives with his older sister Louise near the ski-fields of Switzerland. They live from the spoils of Simon’s trips to the mountain, where he pilfers from wealthy holiday makers. As Christmas approaches and Louise becomes increasingly irresponsible, Simon must use his determination and guile to save their relationship.
