Manny, Joel and Jonah are three inseparable brothers, tearing their way into childhood and often left to fend for themselves as their parents fall in and out of love. Jeremiah Zagar offers a haunting, lyrical film mixing gorgeous cinematography and animated sequences.
Starring: Dennis Price, Alec Guinness
Even Hitchcock couldn’t make murder this much fun. Hamer’s ageless classic challenges The Ladykillers for the title of Ealing’s blackest comedy (call it a score draw, though Kind Hearts... has the higher body count). Near perfect script and direction are crowned by wondrous performances. History tends to remember Guinness’s virtuoso turn as all seven members of the lofty, aristocratic D’Ascoynes. But it’s really Price’s film: as the D’Ascoynes’ ruthless nemesis Louis he gives us surely the screen’s wittiest and most charming psychopath. BFI

In 1984, Diego Maradona arrived in Naples for a world-record fee. The world’s most celebrated football genius and the most dysfunctional city in Europe were a perfect match for each other. It was the stuff of dreams but there was a price… Diego could do as he pleased whilst performing miracles on the pitch, but when the magic faded he became almost a prisoner of the city. This is the wild and unforgettable story of God-given talent, glory, despair and betrayal, of corruption and ultimately redemption. CAPTIONED SCREENING

Sharp of both suit and vocabulary, Bill Nighy is winningly deadpan as Scrabble-obsessed Merseyside tailor Alan, whose eldest son Michael stormed out of the house after a particularly heated round of the popular board game, never to return. Years later, with a body to identify and his family torn apart, Alan must repair the relationship with his youngest son and solve the mystery of an online player who he thinks could be Michael, so he can finally move on and reunite the family.
Seduction, glamour, corruption, drugs and raucous poolside parties: the life and times of scandal-plagued Silvio Berlusconi have long-demanded a screen depiction, and who else to deliver it than Paolo Sorrentino, the Academy Award-winning director of The Great Beauty and The Young Pope, who returns to cinema in spectacular fashion with this dazzling, topical and no-holds-barred look at life in Italy under the glistening eye of modern Europe’s most infamous politician.
Young Írisz Leiter arrives in Budapest hoping to work as a milliner at the legendary hat emporium that once belonged to her late parents. She is sent away by the new owner, Oszkár Brill, but she won’t take no for an answer. As the shop prepares to host important guests, a man abruptly approaches Írisz asking about Kálmán Leiter, who he says is her brother. Refusing to leave the city, Írisz follows Kálmán’s tracks, her only link to a lost past.
Jack Malik is a struggling musician whose dreams of fame are rapidly fading, despite the fierce support of his childhood best friend, Ellie. Then, after a freak bus accident during a mysterious global blackout, Jack wakes up to discover only he remembers the Beatles. Performing songs by the greatest band in history to a world that has never heard them, his star rises, but in the process he risks losing the one person who always believed in him. Director Danny Boyle and writer Richard Curtis team up for this highly anticipated rock-n-roll comedy.

When big-hearted but vacuous Portuguese soccer hunk Diamantino learns about the European refugee crisis, it shatters his sheltered worldview and drains him of the idyllic ignorance that fuels his athletic prowess. Becoming a national embarrassment overnight, he resolves to make amends by adopting an African refugee — only to find that his new “son” is actually an undercover lesbian tax auditor investigating him on the suspicion of corruption. Vividly photographed in Super 16mm, Gabriel Abrantes and Daniel Schmidt’s genre-blending and gender-bending satire is one of the year’s most original and infectiously silly comedies. TIFF
Gloria is a free-spirited, fifty-something divorcée whose days are split between her job and spending time with her children. But at night, she likes to head out to singles clubs hoping to find love on the dance floor. When she meets Arnold, a romance begins, but the excitement of budding love soon starts to clash with the complications of dating. Sebastián Lelio (A Fantastic Woman, Disobedience) directs a shot-for-shot remake of his own 2013 Chilean film with the inimitable Julianne Moore in the title role.
Starring: Carmiña Martínez, José Acosta
The Colombian Wayuu tribe has gathered to observe young Zaida’s coming-of-age ceremony. Outsider Rapayet is determined to marry her, but to come up with the enormous dowry her mother, Úrsula, demands, he begins to deal drugs. Soon, Úrsula gets involved and, over the course of a decade, the family builds an empire – but when they get caught up in a conflict, things spiral out of control rapidly and relentlessly. The Oscar-nominated team behind Embrace of the Serpent returns with this powerful tale of family, tradition and greed.
Fatma Mohamed
Sheila, is ready to get back in the dating game. At a peculiar department store, where the staff seems to speak in riddles, she finds a very unique scarlet dress she hopes will bring her luck. But the dress truly is like no other, and those who wear it must suffer the consequences. Peter Strickland creates an exquisite, surreal, psychosexual thriller with a sense of humour as dark as its garment’s motive.
The incredible true story of Bert Trautmann, a German soldier and prisoner of war who, against a backdrop of British post-war protest and prejudice, secures the position of goalkeeper at Manchester City, and in doing so becomes a footballing icon.
