On New Year’s Day in 2009, 22-yearold Oscar Grant was shot in cold blood by police officers outside Fruitvale subway station in the US. The event was captured on camera phones and posted on many websites, resulting in many protests both peaceful and violent. Ryan Coogler makes an extraordinary directorial debut with this soulful account of the real-life event that horrified a nation. Featuring radiant performances by Melonie Diaz and Michael B. Jordan as Grant, Fruitvale offers a barometer reading on the state of humanity in American society today.

In 1977, 27-year-old Robyn Davidson set out on foot across the Australian outback on an extraordinary ninemonth solo journey which would take her 2,700km through some of the world’s most awe-inspiring and difficult terrain, with just four camels and her beloved dog. Curran’s film is a mesmerising study of psychology and environment with Mia Wasikowska giving her best performance by far as the fragile and fiery Robyn.

Perhaps the exemplary youth picture, this portrait of a tortured young man trying to come to terms with his position as the new kid in town features top performances from Dean and Natalie Wood as his girlfriend. A terrific use of colour and framing make Ray’s film one of the best of the overheated 50s American melodramas. Moviemail

Based on the life of historical figure Dido Elizabeth Belle, Belle tells the story of the illegitimate mixed-race daughter of a British Naval officer and an African slave in 18th-century Britain. Raised as a noblewoman, Belle’s lineage affords her certain privileges, yet the colour of her skin prevents her from fully participating in the traditions of her social standing.

Starring: Kyle Catlett, Helena Bonham-Carter

Ten-year-old T.S. Spivet is gifted with a lively imagination, insatiable curiosity and prodigious gifts of observation - he appears to be Montana’s answer to Leonardo da Vinci. Instead of staying home and biding his time, he decides to leave for Washington, alone, to compare his intuitions and research with the country’s top scientists. JeanPierre Jeunet’s adaptation of Reif Larsen’s best-selling novel is an amusing, poignant and visually stunning feature designed to delight young and old alike.

The story of four young men from the wrong side of the tracks in New Jersey who came together to form the iconic 1960s rock group The Four Seasons. Their trials and triumphs are accompanied by the hit songs "Sherry", "Big Girls Don't Cry", "Walk like a Man", "Dawn", "Rag Doll", "Bye Bye Baby", "Who Loves You" and many more.

While investigating noises in his house one balmy Texas night, Richard Dane puts a bullet in the brain of burglar Freddy Russell. Although he’s hailed as a small-town hero, Dane soon finds himself fearing for his family’s safety when Freddy’s ex-con father, Ben, rolls into town, hell-bent on revenge. Directed with an excellent eye for the visual poetry of noir, this pulpy, southern-fried mystery is a throwback to an older breed of action film, one where every punch and shotgun blast opens up both physical and spiritual wounds.
