Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) reunite for the comedy adventure Paul as two sci-fi geeks whose pilgrimage takes them to America’s UFO heartland. While there, they accidentally meet an alien who brings them on an insane road trip that alters their universe forever...

Ben Mendelsohn

Renowned for her wonderfully inventive works for both stage and screen, Julie Taymor has applied her considerable talents to this fascinating rendering of Shakespeare’s late, great mystical romance. Exiled on a remote island, Prospera, the duchess of Milan, conjures up a storm to lure a bevy of characters from her past to shore, revealing in the process a skate of human frailties, illusions, kindness and nobility. Ms. Mirren is ably aided by a terrific cast, including Russell Brand, Alfred Molina, Djimon Hounsou, David Strathairn, Chris Cooper, Alan Cumming, Ben Whishaw & Tom Conti.

This riveting drama, which won a World Cinema Grand Jury Prize at this year’s Sundance, sees 17 year-old Josh drawn into the orbit of his hard-core criminal family when his protective mother dies. As the police close in on his three near-psychotic uncles, Josh finds himself conflicted by family loyalties and pressure from a detective, while coping with a gut-wrenching impulse to see justice prevail and to survive. Back by popular demand! Blue Valentine is an intelligent, heartbreaking story of a couple nearing the end of their marriage. In flashback we see the pleasure and promise of their early relationship, and the film pulls us between past and present, giving us a subtly drawn, non-judgemental portrait of the ebb and flow of love.

Starring: Naomi Watts, Antonio Banderas,

Starring: Sally Hawkins, Noah Taylor,

Following Encounters At The End Of The World, Herzog once again takes us deep behind the frontier of an extraordinary place. In the mesmerising Cave of Forgotten Dreams he gains exclusive access to film inside the Chauvet caves of southern France, capturing the oldest known pictorial creations of humankind in their astonishing natural setting. He puts 3-D technology to a profound use, taking us back in time over 30,000 years.

Tommy Lee Jones

Bobby Walker is living the American dream: great job, beautiful family, shiny Porsche in the garage. When corporate downsizing leaves him and co-workers Phil and Gene jobless, the three men are forced to re-define their lives as men, husbands, and fathers. Bobby soon finds himself enduring enthusiastic life coaching, a job building houses which does not play to his executive skill set, and perhaps the realization that there is more to life than chasing the bigger, better deal. With humour, pathos, and keen observation, writer-director John Wells (the creator of “ER”) introduces us to the new realities of American life.

Adapting Haruki Murakami’s breakthrough novel with the romantic melancholy of the Beatles song that gave it its name, Norwegian Wood is a passionate story of nostalgia, loss and awakening sexuality. Watanabe, a quiet and serious college student, becomes deeply devoted to Naoko, a beautiful and introspective young woman with whom he shares the tragedy of their best friend’s death. When Naoko suddenly disappears, Midori, an outgoing, vivacious and supremely selfconfident girl marches into Watanabe’s life.

Brilliantly directed by David Fincher from a razor-sharp script by Aaron Sorkin, The Social Network is a scintillating look at the meteoric rise and acrimonious fall of the founders of Facebook - Harvard undergrads who developed their zeitgeist-altering phenomenon out of their dorm rooms...and ended up suing each other for millions.

BENDA BILILI! (PG) Dir: Renaud Barret France 2009 86m

Staff Benda Bilili were a huge sensation at WOMAD this summer. This French documentary (5 years in the making) follows the band's remarkable fairy tale journey from the streets of Kinshasa, Congo to becoming International stars. Benda Bilili means ‘see beyond' which has profound meaning for this group of musicians who include five paraplegics and an able bodied teenager who makes music from a tin can connected to a stick with a piece of nylon. Fantastic music and remarkable characters make this an uplifting and unforgettable film. Bath Film Festival

Woody Allen's latest comic ensemble piece follows a group of Londoners struggling with failing marriages, restless libidos, the perils of aging and desires that drive a series of decisions with unforeseen consequences. This comic concoction moves effortlessly between farce and frolic, with hints of Molière and ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ sprinkled throughout. Allen’s uncanny ability to send up all of his characters while remaining in love with their every misstep is a marvel to behold. Toronto Film Festival

The world hadn’t been waiting for the Welsh Rushmore, which makes Submarine that much more of a thrill. Full of surprises and amazingly affecting, this is a film to fall in love with. Based on Joe Dunthorne’s acclaimed novel, Submarine is a captivating coming-ofage story with an offbeat edge. Our hero, Oliver Tate, must fight to save his mother from the advances of a mystic and simultaneously lure his eczema-strafed girlfriend in to the bedroom armed with only a vast vocabulary and near-total self-belief.

ROUND IRELAND WITH A FRIDGE... A TRUE STORY (PG)

Dir: Ken Loach United Kingdom 2010 108m

Dir: Jim Loach United Kingdom 2010 105m

See page 10 for details.

Starring: Mark Womack, Andrea Lowe

Starring: Emily Watson, Hugo Weaving

For filmgoers who crave political engagement, the partnership of director Ken Loach and writer Paul Laverty is a rich source. Their latest work, Route Irish, grapples with the Iraq war and the trend of using privatized soldiers who are more costly to taxpayers and less accountable to law than enlisted ranks. Route Irish probes deep into the disturbed mind of a man who has survived the Iraq experience, but emerges with scars that may never heal.

Talent is clearly woven into the fabric of the Loach family DNA as Jim Loach (son of Ken) makes an immensely impressive feature debut with Oranges and Sunshine. Rona Munro has skillfully adapted Margaret Humphreys’s 1994 book ‘Empty Cradles’ and Loach secures a powerhouse performance from Emily Watson in the lead role. In 1986, Nottingham social worker Humphreys became aware of a government programme that ran from the Victorian era until 1970 and relocated thousands of British children throughout the Commonwealth. It was the beginning of a tireless campaign to expose the truth, investigate the past and reunite dozens of broken families. Glasgow Film Festival
