But when conflict erupted throughout the house, it led to the Partition of India. In 1947, Lord Mountbatten assumed the post of last Viceroy, charged with handing India back to its people. In the Viceroy’s house the political elite wrangled upstairs over India’s independence, whilst 500 Hindu, Muslim and Sikh servants lived downstairs. But when conflict erupted throughout the house, it led to the Partition of India. Gurinder Chadha’s deeply personal film examines those events through the prism of both a marriage and a romance, as the lovers find themselves caught up in the seismic end of an Empire.
Based on short stories from Maile Meloy and winner of Best Film at the London Film Festival, Kelly Reichardt’s latest feature is a remarkable portrait of three striving and independent women whose lives intersect in the wide-open plains of the American Northwest.
Starring: Isabelle Huppert, Laurent Lafitte
Kristen Stewart is Maureen, a young medium reluctantly working in Paris as a personal shopper. Her real reason to remain in France is to try to reach the spirit of her recently deceased twin brother. Contact seems unlikely until Maureen starts receiving strange text messages.
Starring: Sonia Braga, Maeve Jinkings
James Gray’s emotionally and visually dazzling epic tells the story of Lieutenant Colonel Percy Fawcett, the British military-man-turned-explorer whose search for a lost city deep in the Amazon grows into an increasingly feverish, decades-long magnificent obsession that takes a toll on his reputation, his home life with his wife and children, and his very existence.
Ben Wheatley follows hot-on-the-heels of his last feature High-Rise with this guns blazing action thriller set in America in 1978. Justine has arranged a deal on behalf of two Irishmen to buy a stash of guns from gangsters Vernon and Ord, but then there’s a misunderstanding and shots are fired… The standout cast has a great fun with this shoot-em-up and the playful script’s wry dialogue as the manic standoff escalates to a bloody game of survival. Brighton Film Festival
Starring: Emma Watson, Dan Stevens
A STREET CAT NAMED BOB (12A) 103m
DIRECTOR GURINDER CHADHA WILL TAKE PART IN AN ON-STAGE Q&A AFTER THE 2.45PM SCREENING ON SAT 4 MAR
Paul Verhoeven’s first feature in a decade ranks amongst his most incendiary, improbable concoctions: a wry, almost-screwball comedy of manners about a woman who responds to rape by refusing the mantle of victimhood. Instead, she engages her assailant in a dangerous game of domination and submission in which her motivations remain a constant source of mystery, humour, and tension.
“The cumulative power of Reichardt’s film, beautifully acted by Laura Dern, Michelle Williams, Kristen Stewart and Lily Gladstone, is undeniable and quietly devastating.” Rolling Stone
Film Society of Lincoln Center
“Few could pull off the unapologetically demented nature of Elle like Verhoeven.” Associated Press

Acclaimed director Bill Condon refashions one of Disney’s animated classics into a new thrilling and dazzling live-action movie, starring Emma Watson as the young bright independent woman who is taken prisoner by a beast in his castle. Befriending the castle’s enchanted staff, she learns to look beyond the Beast’s appearance and find the Prince within.
In the not-quite halcyon days of late-70s Santa Barbara, on the cusp of a new era in sexual politics, single mother Dorothea Fields enlists two younger women to help her raise her teenage son in hopes that he will grow into a man who truly understands women.

New York Film Festival

New York Film Festival

No voice-over, no score, no people. Homo Sapiens is a film about the fragility of human existence and the end of the industrial age. We see powerful images of empty spaces, ruins, cities increasingly overgrown with vegetation and crumbling asphalt. This is one for the architecture enthusiasts, the ‘ruin porn’ addicts, the urban explorers and anyone keen to witness the present-day post-apocalypse.
Dir: Ralph Loop UK 2017 96m

A fast-paced, state-of-the-art concert film of the stage production Rammstein delivered at Paris Bercy in March 2012. It’s a visual feast, a celebration of Rammstein live that is both different to and in some ways better than being there - and a definite contender for the best concert film of all time.
At seven months expecting and on her own, Ruth becomes convinced her unborn baby is instructing her to kill people - and so she does, giving new meaning to the term “pregnancy craving.” Writer-director-star Alice Lowe (Sightseers) made Prevenge while she herself was pregnant, adding another subversive layer to a venomous comedy that skewers the mystique of motherhood.
We are delighted to present two films as part of The Royal Concert Hall’s Sound Stage, Music and the Moving Image Festival. RCH Highlights include The Hallé’s Great Sci-Fi Movies and Under the Skin screening with live score by London Sinfonietta. For festival details go to: www.trch.co.uk
