A thrilling debut from a breakout talent, Neighbouring Sounds delves into the lives of a group of middle-class families residing on a quiet street in Recife, close to a low-income neighbourhood. The private security firm hired to police the street becomes the catalyst for an exploration of the neighbours’ discontents and anxieties - their feelings exacerbated by the palpable unease of a society that remains unreconciled to its troubled past and present inequities. Meticulously constructed, this ensemble film is compulsive viewing; you’re never quite sure where things are headed as it builds imperceptibly toward its stunning payoff. Film Society Lincoln Center

Kirk, Spock and the rest of the Enterprise crew step up to a new challenge when they come face-to-face with a nefarious villain played by the ever-watchable Benedict Cumberbatch.

Tobey Maguire

Pedro Almodóvar returns to comedy for his new film about a mixed bag of passengers and crew who face a lifethreatening situation on board a plane flying to Mexico City. Candid confessions - as well as musical interludes - help them ward off fears of imminent death. I’m So Excited stars Cecilia Roth (from All About My Mother), Javier Camara (from Talk To Her) and Lola Duenas (from Volver), with cameos from Penélope Cruz and Antonio Banderas.

A 17-year-old called Shell and her emotionally crippled mechanic father, Pete, live and work in a run-down petrol station, which attracts almost no passing traffic. In this remote and unforgiving spot, the absence of Shell’s mother creates an intense and deeply troubling bond between father and child that not only binds Shell and Pete, but may also consume and ultimately destroy them.

Starring: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto

Pepa Charro

SAT 4 - MON 6 In an attempt to shed his bad-guy image, Wreck-it Ralph inadvertantly wreaks havoc in the video-game universe.

“Scott Graham’s haunting, minimalist debut grips from the outset with startling photography and an attention-grabbing turn from newbie actress Chloe Pirrie.” Empire

Dir: Mira Nair United States 2012 130m

One mistake can mean life or death to the crew on board a Danish ship taken hostage by Somali pirates. In Denmark, the shipping company’s CEO boldly ignores advice from a hostage negotiator and speaks on the phone directly with the pirate’s translator. Conditions worsen as the psychological pressure intensifies and negotiations continue. Shifting from the chaotic conditions onboard to the offices of the shipping company, A Hijacking skilfully examines the art of bargaining in this fraught, high-pressure drama. AFI FESTIVAL

Studio Ghibli's My Neighbour Totoro is a charming tale about 10 year-old Saksuki and her inquisitive younger sister Mei who move to a new home in the country to be closer to their mother in hospital. Far from the bustle of the city, they discover a mysterious place of spirits and magic, and the friendship of the forest spirits. [In English]

The last (but not the first) time ‘The Great Gatsby’ hit the big screen it was 1974. Francis Ford Coppola wrote the adaptation and the film starred Robert Redford as Jay Gatsby and Mia Farrow as Daisy Buchanan. Now, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s tragic look at love, class, and the American dream in 1920s Long Island gets the deliriously high-energy Baz Luhrmann treatment along with a new set of stars including Leonardo DiCaprio as Gatsby, Carey Mulligan as Daisy and Tobey Maguire as Nick.

FROM FRI 10

THE RELUCTANT FUNDAMENTALIST (15) Starring: Riz Ahmed, Kiefer Sutherland

The Reluctant Fundamentalist is Mira Nair’s intense adaptation of Mohsin Hamid’s best-selling novel about a young Pakistani man whose pursuit of corporate success on Wall Street leads him on a strange path back to the world he had left behind. Layered with traditional songs, Urdu poetry set to music and Pakistani pop, composer Michael Andrews’ score is a rich tapestry representing the intertwining of old and new. A powerhouse performance by Riz Ahmed and Nair’s confident direction ensure this will be one of the mosttalked-about films of the year.

A whizzier version of The Flintstones, this comedy adventure follows the world’s first modern family as they embark on a journey of a lifetime.

SOMETHING IN THE AIR (15) With English Subtitles Dir: Olivier Assayas France 2012 122m Starring: Lola Créton, Clément Métayer

Celebrated French filmmaker Olivier Assayas returns with this lovely, loosely autobiographical tale about a young aspiring artist caught up in a whirlwind of politics, art and sex in the fervid French youth scene of the early 1970s.

"It belongs on any list of the greatest war films ever made." Roger Ebert

THE GREAT GATSBY SUBJECT TO CERT

Starring: Romain Duris, Bérénice Bejo

A sparkling romantic comedy that matches Gallic savoir faire with vintage Hollywood style. The retro look of Mad Men and the glossy allure of a Doris Day/Rock Hudson tussle are among the influences on this beautifully crafted story about a country girl who takes up a job as a secretary only to find her boss entering her into the world speed typing competitions. Packed with period colour, Populaire is sheer delight and the fantastic soundtrack is the icing on a very special cake. Glasgow Film Festival
