Scarlett Johansson is unforgettable as an alien entity who falls to earth in Scotland and assumes the form of a sexy seductress. She cruises the streets of Glasgow in a white van, a seemingly innocent damsel in distress luring her unsuspecting victims to their doom. Glasgow Film Festival

Built as a tense, airtight thriller, this Cannes hit is a captivating take on the classic American revenge story. Dwight is a vagrant, scavenging for food and sleeping in a broken-down car. His aimless existence is interrupted, however, when he hears that a man from his past is being released from prison. Instantly, Dwight jumps into action, returning to his childhood home to protect his relatives and prepared to carry out an act of vengeance. The result is an enthralling, startling, purely cinematic tale of family and vengeance that is not to be missed.

Celebrated screenwriter Hossein Amini (The Wings of the Dove, Drive) delivers a stylish directorial debut, with this adaptation of a Patricia Highsmith suspense thriller gorgeously filmed on location in Greece and Turkey. In 1962, a well-heeled couple (Viggo Mortensen and Kirsten Dunst) come to know an American expatriate acting as an Athens tour guide (Oscar Isaac). But an incident at the couple’s hotel puts all three in danger and creates a precarious interdependence between them. San Francisco Film Festival

There is great excitement in Greendale as a national TV talent show is coming to the rural town. When everybody’s favourite postman, Pat, gets up to do his turn, he reveals an amazing singing voice. Seduced away from his friends and family by the lure of money and fame, Pat is replaced by a robot called the PatBot 3000. Even his faithful black and white cat Jess has a robot double. But little does anyone suspect that the PatBot has world domination in mind!

“Visually and aurally audacious and as slippery in form as its central character… Glazer has created an entirely distinctive film, both creepy and luminous in its metaphysical precision.” BFI

Rebecca is one of the world’s top war photographers. On assignment while photographing a female suicide bomber group she gets badly hurt in an explosion. Back home another bomb drops. Her husband and daughters can no longer live with the stress of her high-risk career. She is given an ultimatum: her work, or her family life. In this gripping drama director Erik Poppe explores the wrenching contradictions of a career woman in peril.

Paul and Lucie are the perfect French bourgeois couple. Paul is a respected surgeon; Lucie cooks and gardens exquisitely. But Paul’s passion for a stranger brings chaos into their wellmanicured existence. Philippe Claudel’s film opens as a skillful, Gallic take on Fatal Attraction, but it is far too smart to follow those well-worn tracks, gradually morphing into something more disconcertingly original and passionate. Belfast Film Festival

FRANK (15) Dir: Lenny Abrahamson Ireland 2014 95m Starring: Michael Fassbender, Domhnall Gleeson

THE TWO FACES OF JANUARY

How does Michael Fassbender in a giant papier-mâché grab you? Loosely inspired by the late Frank Sidebottom, Frank is a comedy about a young wannabe musician, who discovers he’s bitten off more than he can chew when he joins a band of eccentric musicians led by the mysterious and enigmatic Frank and his terrifying sidekick, Clara.

JIMMY’S HALL (CERT TBC)

Dir: Sini Anderson United States 2013 81m

Dir: Ken Loach United Kingdom 2014 RT TBC

Kathleen Hanna fronted early-1990s Riot Grrrl band Bikini Kill and then the electro pop perfection of Le Tigre. Her rallying rebellious cry against the sexist, heteronormative music scene proved a source of constant encouragement to many until, in 2005, she disappeared from the public eye with no explanation. Shedding light on her need to retreat, this rousing documentary recounts Hanna’s extraordinary career, from the social impact she had to the individual lives she changed, painting a definitive portrait of this inspirational rebel girl.

Starring: Barry Ward, Andrew Scott

Ken Loach returns to the theme of Irish independence, which he explored in the Palme D’Or-winning The Wind That Shakes the Barley. The new film, Jimmy’s Hall, is about James Gralton, an Irish communist politician who set up a dance hall in Effrinagh, County Leitrim. After being opposed by the Catholic Church, Gralton was arrested and deported to the US in 1933.

The dark secrets of the Weston family come to the surface when they reunite after a family crisis. *Please note earlier start time.

Omar is a Palestinian baker who routinely climbs over the separation wall to meet up with his girlfriend, Nadja. By night, he’s either a freedom fighter or a terrorist - you decide - ready to risk his life to strike at the Israeli military. Arrested after the killing of an Israeli soldier and tricked into an admission of guilt by association, he agrees to work as an informant. So begins a dangerous game… Palestinian filmmaker Hany Abu-Assad (Paradise Now) has made a dynamic, action-packed drama about the insoluble moral dilemmas and tough choices facing those on the frontlines of a conflict that shows no sign of letting up. Shortsighted from an early age, Jiro is forced to abandon his dreams of becoming a pilot and becomes an engineer. But as Jiro watches his magnificent flying machines go over the horizon, he realises most of them will never return. Inspired by the life of celebrated aeronautical designer Jiro Horikoshi, The Wind Rises is Studio Ghibli’s latest, an epic tale of love, perseverance, and the challenges of living in a turbulent world.

“Off-beat and punk-spirited, Sievey would no doubt approve of the tone and style of this movie.” The Telegraph
