Part classic tragedy, part social commentary, this moody and provocative Argentine drama tells the story of an ambulance-chasing personal injury lawyer with dubious ethics who falls in love with an idealistic doctor.

Tim Burton casts his eccentric spell over this new gothic horror film based on a cult TV series of the late ’60s. Depp plays Barnabas Collins, an 18th century vampire imprisoned in a crypt until 1972. That’s when an unlucky construction crew sets him free, and in a world of lava lamps, glam rock and Richard M. Writer/director Jean-Marc Vallée returns to the fluid, intuitive filmmaking that made him a sensation with C.R.A.Z.Y. In Café De Flore, he spins a complex, time-jumping narrative involving a present-day Montreal father in the throes of a mid-life crisis and the mother of a child with Down’s syndrome in 1969 Paris. Simply a beautiful, intricate film. A word of advice, though, when the credits start rolling, remain seated.

The brilliant and inventive Wes Anderson (The Royal Tenenbaums, Fantastic Mr. Fox) returns with this comedy drama set in the summer of ’65. Twelve-year-old Sam abandons his scout troupe to run away with his girlfriend, Suzy. Hot on the pair’s trail are the rest of the scouts from Camp Ivanhoe (including scout leader Edward Norton), a commanding police sheriff (Bruce Willis) and Suzy’s parents, played by Frances McDormand and Anderson regular Bill Murray.

The striking new film from animator Michel Ocelot (Kirikou and the Sorceress) uses new 3D techniques alongside classic silhouette animation, creating a kaleidoscopic effect that feels unusual and dramatic. The film weaves together six exotic fables which unfold in Tibet, medieval Europe, an Aztec kingdom, the African savannah, and the Land of the Dead; all enacted by a young boy and girl. It is an intoxicating, magical combination of sharp dialogue, a dry sense of humour and an enchanting sense of pleasure that will bewitch you from the start. [IN ENGLISH] Cork French Film Festival

During a harsh Montréal winter, a school class is left reeling after its teacher commits suicide. Bachir Lazhar, a charismatic Algerian immigrant, steps in as the substitute teacher for the classroom of traumatized children. All the while, he must keep his personal life tucked away: the fact that he is seeking political refuge in Québec - and that he, like the children, has suffered an appalling loss. Mohamed Fellag as Lazhar delivers a performance full of charm, compassion, and humanity, allowing the story of a beloved teacher to breathe with wit and originality.

Great Dames Judi Dench and Maggie Smith reunite for this comedy-drama about a group of pensioners who head for India with dreams of a life of luxury and wind up at the titular hotel.

For many, this adaptation of Kaj Munk’s play about tensions within a Jutland farming family is the very greatest of all Dreyer’s masterpieces, as suspenseful as it’s emotionally devastating. It revolves around the Borgens, a humble farming family led by devout Christian patriarch Morten. When a tragic event befalls them, Morten and his sons find themselves questioning their faith, and God’s ultimate plan for the family.

THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL (12A)

Dir: Whit Stillman United States 2011 99m

Dir: John Madden United Kingdom 2012

Starring: Greta Gerwig, Adam Brody

After a 13-year absence from filmmaking, Stillman (Metropolitan, Barcelona, The Last Days Of Disco) picks up precisely where he left off, chronicling the interactions of well-spoken young people with more privilege than sense. Here, the bone-dry comedy springs from the efforts of four haughty college girls to make their campus a better place by condescending to date idiot frat boys.

Nixon, he finds a purpose in the new era. The ensemble cast features a number of Burton’s regular players - in addition to Depp and Pfeiffer, there’s Helena Bonham Carter, Chloe Moretz and English horror legend Christopher Lee.

Starring: Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Judi Dench

Starring: Jason Segal, Susan Sarandon

GOODBYE FIRST LOVE (15) With English Subtitles Dir: Mia Hansen-Love France 2011 111m

Directors Mark and Jay Duplass take on brotherly dynamics as well as fate and love in this delightfully authentic and moving comedy. A call from his exasperated mom begging him to complete a simple errand shakes a begrudging Jeff off the couch. Suddenly, the universe begins to deliver important signs that could unlock his destiny...

The new romantic drama from rising talent Mia Hansen-Løve (Father of My Children) is an unashamedly personal story of love, loss and the tender memories from youth that can never truly be erased. Spring, 1999. Camille is 15 years old and head-over-heels in love with Sullivan, a boy four years her senior. Four years later, Camille is involved with her Danish professor, but when Sullivan reappears, she finds herself caught between two loves...

DAMSELS IN DISTRESS (12A)

Nixon, he finds a purpose in the new era. The ensemble cast features a number of Burton’s regular players - in addition to Depp and Pfeiffer, there’s Helena Bonham Carter, Chloe Moretz and English horror legend Christopher Lee.

GOODBYE FIRST LOVE (15) With English Subtitles Dir: Mia Hansen-Love France 2011 111m

Directors Mark and Jay Duplass take on brotherly dynamics as well as fate and love in this delightfully authentic and moving comedy. Thirty-four-year-old Jeff spends his days steadily unlocking the profound mysteries of the universe ...from the comfort of his mother’s basement. A call from his exasperated mom begging him to complete a simple errand shakes a begrudging Jeff off the couch. Suddenly, the universe begins to deliver important signs that could unlock his destiny...

Starring: Lola Creton, Sebastian Urzendowsky

The Hamptons International Film Festival

The new romantic drama from rising talent Mia Hansen-Løve (Father of My Children) is an unashamedly personal story of love, loss and the tender memories from youth that can never truly be erased. Spring, 1999. Camille is 15 years old and head-over-heels in love with Sullivan, a boy four years her senior. Four years later, Camille is involved with her Danish professor, but when Sullivan reappears, she finds herself caught between two loves...

Nixon, he finds a purpose in the new era. The ensemble cast features a number of Burton’s regular players - in addition to Depp and Pfeiffer, there’s Helena Bonham Carter, Chloe Moretz and English horror legend Christopher Lee.

The new romantic drama from rising talent Mia Hansen-Løve (Father of My Children) is an unashamedly personal story of love, loss and the tender memories from youth that can never truly be erased. Spring, 1999. Camille is 15 years old and head-over-heels in love with Sullivan, a boy four years her senior. Four years later, Camille is involved with her Danish professor, but when Sullivan reappears, she finds herself caught between two loves...

The ensemble cast features a number of Burton’s regular players - in addition to Depp and Pfeiffer, there’s Helena Bonham Carter, Chloe Moretz and English horror legend Christopher Lee.

A famous film director returns home to a Sicilian village for the first time after almost 30 years. He reminisces about his happy childhood at the Cinema Paradiso where Alfredo, the projectionist, first awakened his love of films, and is reminded of his love for the beautiful Elena...

An adaptation of Noel Coward’s witty social comedy, retaining the period setting but giving it a distinctly modern feel. Set in the roaring twenties, it revolves around a most enjoyable culture-clash between dusty landed English aristos and a bohemian American.

Happiness and wellbeing. Does money make you happy? Kids and family? Your work? Do you live in a world that promotes happiness and well-being? Taking us from the bayous of Louisiana to the deserts of Namibia, from the beaches of Brazil to the villages of Okinawa, Happy explores the secrets behind our most valued emotion.

What happens when an industry has too much power? Politicians become pawns; laws are created and prevented; regulations are bypassed; our climate changes and people die. Greedy Lying Bastards is a documentary film exposing the shocking lengths the fossil fuel industry goes to to ensure maximum profits for executives and shareholders.

Lawrence Of Belgravia is an intimate documentary portrait of England’s greatest lost musical genius. Although his records have barely troubled the lower reaches of the charts, his cult status is now greater than ever. The film follows him as he tries to balance a precarious domestic lifestyle with running a band and recording his latest album.

Mayhem and All Night Horror Madness present a double bill of Flesh and Blood - two of the maddest films ever made. Savour Andy Warhol’s Flesh For Frankenstein, a genre-bending collision of arthouse, gothic horror and ultragore and I Drink Your Blood, a slice of 70s out-of-control horror.

Capturing moving images is now commonplace with mobiles and pocket cameras, but before the digital age it wasn’t so easy. Small format movie cameras were the liberating technology of the mid-20th century, giving ordinary people the chance to capture everyday events.

Woody Harrelson re-teams with Messenger director Oren Moverman to deliver a dynamite performance as a dirty cop. Set in the scandal-tainted Rampart division of the LAPD, and cowritten by James Elroy (L.A. Confidential), Rampart is an atmospheric odyssey through the underbelly of Los Angeles

Illustrating the banality of evil in an impressively controlled and sometimes darkly humourous fashion, Michael takes a coolly nonjudgmental, nonpsychological approach to a disturbing topic, telling us about five months in the life of a 30-ish paedophile who kept a 10-year-old boy locked in his basement.

Tickets: £10 full £8 concs + members There will be a 30 minute interval between films.

Cipher (Theo Travis and Dave Sturt) have collaborated with visual artist Anthony Hatton to produce an engaging cinematic and live music experience using archive footage from the Media Archive of Central England, including local images of the Midlands from the 1930s to 1970s.

This is no conventional documentary about a literary figure but an imaginative interpretation of WG Sebald’s extraordinary book, ‘The Rings of Saturn’, his account of a walk along the crumbling coastline of East Anglia. Personal and public histories overlap and interweave in space and time as Grant Gee (Joy Division) brings together images and passages from the book, film footage, maps and interviews in an acutely melancholic evocation of place.

Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi is currently under house arrest in Tehran, where he made This is Not a Film. It’s a startling documentary depicting a day in Panahi’s life as he appeals his conviction for “propaganda against the system” - which carries with it a jail sentence and a twenty-year ban from writing or directing. A moving, hugely significant film from a filmmaker who currently has no voice in the world thanks to his unjust imprisonment.

Idealist director Sebastián and his bullish producer Costa are making a film about Christopher Columbus. But filming in Bolivia is no easy business, with an escalating conflict over the privatisation of water supplies in the city of Cochabamba, where the cast and crew are filming, threatening the progress of the venture. Setting the Bolivian Water War of 2000 against Columbus’s colonisation of South America, Even the Rain is socially conscious cinema, distinguished by muscular performances and a robust political edge.
