The fame has faded and the waistline has expanded but top actor Richard Thorncroft still clings to his status as beloved 1980s TV sleuth Mindhorn. Decades after the hit show, a dangerous criminal demands the fictional Mindhorn as his nemesis and Thorncroft is back in business. Redemption or disaster await as he returns to his old stomping ground on the Isle of Man to confront all the chaos he left behind. The ghosts of groovy Austin Powers and walking disaster area Inspector Clouseau haunt a rollicking comic romp graced by a stellar cast. Glasgow Film Festival
Starring Timothy Spall as First Minister Paisley and Colm Meaney as his counterpart Martin McGuinness, the film tells the story of how the one-time enemies came together to herald the beginning of a new power-sharing agreement between the DUP and Sinn Fein in Northern Ireland. Set before the 2006 St Andrews Agreement, the two are forced to take a short journey together in which they will take the biggest leap of faith and change the course of history. Colin Bateman’s beautifully structured script and Nick Hamm’s crisp direction ensure that, even though we know how this story ends, the getting there is suspenseful, moving, and wholly engrossing.
Hope Dickson Leach’s haunting debut feature tells the moving tale of a father and daughter forced to confront past grievances in the wake of a family tragedy. Game of Thrones’ Ellie Kendrick is a compelling presence as Clover, a young vet who returns to the family farm after the death of her brother whilst her gruff father blithely carries on with business as usual. Told with remarkable poise and maturity, The Levelling marks the arrival of an exciting new voice in British cinema. Glasgow Film Festival
MON 15, 6.15PM This screening will have English subtitles for the hard of hearing.
"Dickson Leach ensures that the underlying emotions are carefully observed, released, and addressed. Beautiful young witch, Elaine, is determined to find a man to love her. However her spells work a little too well, leaving her with a string of hapless victims and the odd body to dispose of. A loving pastiche of melodrama thrillers of the ‘60s, The Love Witch is an intoxicating exploration of female fantasy.
Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, and his newfound family of misfits return to unravel the mysteries of Peter’s true parentage. Set to the backdrop of Awesome Mixtape #2, the gang traverses the outer reaches of the cosmos and meets old foes and new allies in this fun-packed adventure sequel.
A determined young woman journeys from Spain to Germany to retrieve a gnarled, thousand-year-old olive tree that is precious to her ailing grandfather after it has been sold to an energy company, in Icíar Bollaín’s engaging, bittersweet fable.
Shipwrecked, a man tries to return to civilisation on a makeshift raft, but a giant red turtle gets in his way. Enraged, he commits a seemingly irreparable act that will change his life in unexpected ways. Marking Studio Ghibli’s first co-production, The Red Turtle, though dialogue-free, ponders life’s essential experiences.
