As peculiar and endearing as her debut, Me and You and Everyone We Know, July’s second feature follows Los Angeles couple Sophie and Jason who decide to live out their dreams in the 30 days before their freedom is curtailed by the arrival of newly adopted cat Paw Paw - the film’s feline narrator! Sliding along the edges of romance, satire and suburban horror, July creates an unsettling film about fear and how it undermines our aspirations while retaining her characteristic playfulness. Sophie’s attempts to film her dance routines for YouTube are amongst the film’s many delights. Sydney Film Festival
Smart and engaging, Weekend is filled with ideas and heart, humour and sadness. On a Friday night after hanging out with his straight mates, Russell heads out to a nightclub, alone and on the pull. Just before closing time he picks up Glen. And so begins a weekend - in bars and in bedrooms, getting drunk and taking drugs, telling stories and having sex - that will resonate throughout their lives.

London, 1921, and the country turns to séances and spiritualism for solace from the war. Academic and writer Florence Cathcart is a determined realist with an unwavering confidence in logic and science, but when schoolmaster Robert Mallor tells her of incidents at a boys’ boarding school following the death of a child, Florence starts to uncover more secrets than she bargained for. Referencing The Others and The Innocents, Murphy’s debut feature is a classy hauntedhouse yarn.
No starched lace, no panoramic views, no sweeping score - Andrea Arnold takes Emily Brontë’s classic novel and strips it to the root of youthful passion, restoring its stark power for a contemporary audience. Following her bracing portraits of female desire in Red Road and Fish Tank, Arnold pushes even further here, portraying love as a rush of heart-stopping beauty, cruelty and impulsive acts.
The long awaited big screen adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’s debut novel ‘The Rum Diary’ is here. Johnny Depp, who played Thompson in Terry Gilliam’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, once again slips into the skin of this wily Gonzo journalist. Paul Kemp is a young New Yorker starting out as a newspaperman in Puerto Rico in the late ‘50s. Soon after arriving in San Juan, he manages to land a job at an English-language rag whose staff, an assortment of has-beens, mad geniuses, drunks and spongers, would seem more at home in the Foreign Legion...
Gerardo Naranjo’s riveting thriller about a beauty queen caught up in a maddening cycle of drug cartel violence is an impressive, innovative and unforgettable film. Newcomer Stephanie Sigman impresses in an unusually demanding role as a Tijuana teen who is caught in the wrong place at the wrong time and is forced, against her will, into increasingly dangerous undertakings for a local gang.
A charming bio-pic centered around the production of Laurence Olivier’s film, The Prince and the Showgirl. The film depicts Monroe’s numerous clashes with her imperious, classically trained director (played with great relish by Kenneth Branagh), who is maddened by his star’s method acting and her ever-present drama coach, Paula Strasberg. Williams mesmerizes as Hollywood icon, Marilyn Monroe.
This adaptation of the famous Terence Rattigan play is a wonderfully brooding story of post-war passion with Rachel Weisz never more mesmerising as the privileged 1950s judge’s wife who becomes enamoured with a young exRAF pilot. It’s a superbly crafted and unapologetically passionate tale that further serves to confirm Terence Davies as a cinematic national treasure. Little White Lies
Curtis is a blue-collar family man plagued by vivid nightmares full of apocalyptic imagery. He tries to hide the dreams from his devoted wife and daughter, but he’s soon overwhelmed, becoming obsessed with building a survival shelter on the family property. But with a family history of mental illness, is Curtis building the foxhole to protect his family from the coming storm, or to protect them from himself?
Written and presented by Sir David Attenborough, Flying Monsters is a ground-breaking film that uses 3D technology and CGI to bring the story of giant flying monsters and their prehistoric world to life. Normal family matinee prices apply with no 3D surcharge.
TUE 1, 8PM WEEKEND PREVIEW + Q&A WITH DIRECTOR ANDREW HAIGH Written, directed and edited by Andrew Haigh, Weekend has taken the festival world by storm. FRI 4, 7.30PM WUTHERING HEIGHTS PREVIEW + Q&A WITH DIRECTOR ANDREA ARNOLD Andrea Arnold is one of the UK‘s most brave and forthright directors and, understandably, her Wuthering Heights is no ordinary adaptation. This special preview screening will be followed by an extended discussion with director Andrea Arnold. With thanks to Artificial Eye.

Shot entirely on location in Nottingham, it was financed by EM Media with support from East Midlands Development Agency. This special preview screening will be followed by a Q&A with Andrew Haigh and Gregory Woods, Professor of Gay and Lesbian Studies at Nottingham Trent University.

Shot entirely on location in Nottingham, it was financed by EM Media with support from East Midlands Development Agency. This special preview screening will be followed by a Q&A with Andrew Haigh and Gregory Woods, Professor of Gay and Lesbian Studies at Nottingham Trent University.

Her breathtaking visual style, bold casting and foregrounding of the power of nature bring a radical freshness to Emily Brontë’s classic tale of longing, prejudice, obsession and revenge. This special preview screening will be followed by an extended discussion with director Andrea Arnold. With thanks to Artificial Eye.

Shot entirely on location in Nottingham, it was financed by EM Media with support from East Midlands Development Agency. This special preview screening will be followed by a Q&A with Andrew Haigh and Gregory Woods, Professor of Gay and Lesbian Studies at Nottingham Trent University.

PLUS PREVIEW & DIRECTOR’S Q&A
FRI 4, 7.30PM WUTHERING HEIGHTS PREVIEW + Q&A WITH DIRECTOR ANDREA ARNOLD Andrea Arnold is one of the UK‘s most brave and forthright directors and, understandably, her Wuthering Heights is no ordinary adaptation.

SIGUR ROS PRESENTS INNI (15)
Dir: Ryszard Brylski Poland 2010 83m
Dir: Vincent Morisset Iceland 2011 75m
(12A) 248m
Starring: Helena Sujecka, Antoni Pawlick
The Met’s visually extravagant production is back for an encore engagement. Richard Croft once again is Gandhi in Philip Glass’s unforgettable opera.
This light-hearted comedy has been called the Polish Amelie. It tells the story of a girl with the ability to communicate with the dead, who after leaving school faces major life choices. Her grandfather, father, and the ghost of her deceased mother, all try to guide her. Ironically, because of various familial traumas, they desperately need help themselves.
Inni is Sigur Rós’s second live film following 2007’s hugely-celebrated Heima. Interweaving archive material from the band’s first ten years with the sometimes gossamer light, sometimes punishingly intense, concert footage, Inni is a persuasive account of one of the most celebrated and influential rock bands of recent years.

With an introduction at 6.15PM.
In part three of the Ring, Wagner’s cosmic vision focuses on his hero’s early conquests, while Robert Lepage’s revolutionary stage machine transforms itself from bewitched forest to mountaintop love nest.

SIGUR ROS PRESENTS INNI (15)
Dir: Ryszard Brylski Poland 2010 83m

In part three of the Ring, Wagner’s cosmic vision focuses on his hero’s early conquests, while Robert Lepage’s revolutionary stage machine transforms itself from bewitched forest to mountaintop love nest.

SIGUR ROS PRESENTS INNI (15)
Dir: Ryszard Brylski Poland 2010 83m

In part three of the Ring, Wagner’s cosmic vision focuses on his hero’s early conquests, while Robert Lepage’s revolutionary stage machine transforms itself from bewitched forest to mountaintop love nest.

SOUND IT OUT + Q&A WITH DIRECTOR JEANIE FINLAY
Ask your average bloke on the street to name a legendary regional music scene and the answer probably wouldn’t be Oxford. And yet, this city cultured one of the world’s most enduringly successful bands “The R Word”, as one interviewee delightfully calls Radiohead, as well as a glut of other important artists: Supergrass, Ride, Foals, Swervedriver and Talulah Gosh. Anyone Can Play Guitar is a love letter to music from city of spires, from Jon Spira, an independent filmmaker and video shop-owner who has been ingrained in the Oxford music scene since the mid-90s. thefourohfive.com
