In the aftermath of a family tragedy, an aspiring author is torn between love for her childhood friend and the temptation of a mysterious outsider. Trying to escape the ghosts of her past, she is swept away to a house that breathes, bleeds… and remembers. Guillermo Del Toro returns with a wonderfully gothic supernatural horror romance.

An intense drama that traces the story of the foot soldiers of the early feminist movement as they fought for the right to vote. Maud has worked hard and exploitative hours in the same factory job since she was a girl; her only respite is the affection of her family. But her deepening friendship with fellow worker and activist fuels her sense of injustice, and she commits to the suffrage cause.

Starring: Saoirse Ronan, Domhnall Gleeson

Academy Award-winning filmmaker Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth) profiles Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani teenager who survived a Taliban assassination attempt to become an outspoken, globally recognized advocate for girl’s rights.

Dominic Cooper

Danny Boyle and Aaron Sorkin joined forces to create this dynamically character-driven portrait of the brilliant man at the epicentre of the digital revolution, working from Walter Isaacson’s best-selling biography and starring Michael Fassbender in the title role. NYFF

A wealthy suburban wife and mother (Cate Blanchett) and an aspiring photographer (Rooney Mara, Best Actress winner at Cannes this year) fall in love and risk everything to be together in Todd Haynes’s achingly romantic adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s early novel about closeted desire in the early 1950s. NYFF

Steven Spielberg brings every strange turn to vivid and tactile life in this complex Cold War story of the 1962 exchange of U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers for Soviet agent Rudolph Abel (Mark Rylance), negotiated by James Donovan (Tom Hanks). NYFF

007 uncovers the existence of the sinister organisation SPECTRE. Needing the help of the daughter of an old nemesis, he embarks on a mission to find her. As Bond ventures toward the heart of SPECTRE, he discovers a chilling connection between himself and the enemy he seeks. Daniel Craig is joined by an all-star for his last outing as James Bond.

Adapted by Nick Hornby (An Education) from the Colm Toibin best-selling novel, this 1950s story follows the life of a young Irish woman caught between tradition and passion, between two countries and two futures. Starring Oscar nominee for Atonement, Saoirse Ronan, the cast also includes Jim Broadbent, Julie Walters and Domhnall Gleason. Film Hub Central East, in partnership with MACE, has dipped into the archives to bring you snapshots of vintage love to precede Brooklyn and complement the BFI LOVE blockbuster season. Street Tales (5m) shows us intrepid reporters taking to the streets to ask Midlanders about love, sex and marriage.

“Suffragette is an urgent and compelling film – made by British women, about British women who changed the course of history – and it is, quite simply, a film that everyone must see.” BFI

WED 4, 7.45PM INTRODUCTION Dr Rory Cormac, a British intelligence expert from the University of Nottingham, will talk about the real MI6, the realities of the “license to kill” and the role of intelligence in countering international organised crime.

MON 2, 5.45PM This screening will be subtitled in English for the hard of hearing.

A big screen adaptation of writer Alan Bennett’s iconic and celebrated memoir, directed by long-standing Bennett collaborator Nicholas Hytner. The film tells the true story of the relationship between Alan Bennett and the singular Miss Shepherd, a woman of uncertain origins who ‘temporarily’ parked her van in Bennett’s London driveway and proceeded to live there for 15 years. Their unique story is funny, poignant and life-affirming. BBC

Film Hub Central East, in partnership with EAFA, has dipped into the archives to bring you snapshots of vintage love to precede Carol and complement the BFI LOVE blockbuster season. Romantic Love (5m) interweaves weddings, rural romances, heartbreak and longing in these tales from early filmmaker H.A.V. Bullied.

MON 23, 7.30PM This screening will be subtitled in English for the hard of hearing.
