In August 16, 1819 in St. Peter’s Field, Manchester, people peacefully gathered to demand changes in the British electoral system. In what became known as the Peterloo massacre, they were attacked by soldiers on horseback, killing and maiming hundreds. Mike Leigh works at a scale unprecedented in his career so far and yet the film is as rich, warm and accessible as his most intimate films.

Starring: Jakob Cedergren, Jessica Dinnage

After their husbands are killed during a daring heist, four widows decide to take matter in their own hands when they discover they’ve been left with an enormous debt from their husbands’ criminal activities. Director Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave) and co-writer Gillian Flynn (‘Gone Girl’) deliver a remarkable thriller and gripping drama set in the midst of corruption and racism, and featuring a star-studded cast.

When Jerry Brinson loses his job and his sense of purpose, he decides to join a rescue team fighting nearby wildfires – leaving behind his wife Jeannette and his teenage son Joe. Alone for the first time, Jeannette explore her new sense of independence, and whilst trying to keep things afloat, starts questioning her family life and choices. Paul Dano’s directorial debut, co-written with Zoe Kazan, is a touching portrait of a young boy witnessing the breakdown of his parents’ marriage in 1960s Montana.

MON 5, 7.30PM This screening will have Captioned Subtitles for the hard of hearing.

A recreation of the harrowing events which took place on the island of Utøya on July 22, 2011.

FROM FRI 2

Alarm dispatcher and former police officer Asger Holm answers an emergency call from a kidnapped woman. When the call is suddenly disconnected, the search for the woman and her kidnapper begins. Taking place entirely in real time and within the confines of Asger’s emergency services office, The Guilty is a claustrophobic, edge-of-your-seat thriller like no other. “A twisty crime thriller that’s every bit as pulse-pounding and involving as its action-oriented, adrenaline-soaked counterparts.” The Hollywood Reporter

“Always deeply satisfying as a heist film, but never simply that, these ass-kicking widows have some glass ceilings to shatter into a million tiny pieces.” BFI London Film Festival

IN THE LOUNGE

“This handsomely made, meticulously acted period picture is an impressive directorial debut for Paul Dano… [who] has given us a satisfying drama of damaged lives.” The Guardian

For the Shibatas, every day brings new troubles, particularly of the monetary kind. Father Osamu and pre-teen son Shota shoplift what they can, but one light-fingered session sees them bring home something different: abandoned, abused five-year-old Juri, whose presence sparks joy as well as life-changing revelations.

Following the death of her estranged father, Ronit returns home to the Orthodox North London community that shunned her years earlier for being attracted to another woman, Esti. There she finds out Esti is now married to her cousin Dovid, but soon, latent passions between the two women resurface, throwing their futures into question. Sebastián Lelio (A Fantastic Woman) offers a beautiful exploration of the boundaries of faith, sexuality and personal freedom.

New York, 1980: three college students make the astounding discovery that they are in fact identical triplets who had been separated at birth, adopted and raised in three different families. Reunited by chance, their story becomes headline news around the globe, making them minor celebrities. They move in together and enjoy the high life, but their fairy-tale reunion soon takes a dark turn as they unearth the extraordinary and sinister circumstances behind their separation. A truly stranger-than-fiction documentary, Three Identical Strangers is equally moving, thrilling and shocking.

Picking up from the events of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and featuring an all-star cast, the second instalment in the series sees Magizoologist Newt Scamander join forces with young Albus Dumbledore to prevent the devious Gellert Grindelwald from raising pure-blood wizards to rule over all non-magical beings.

“Among the very best of the writer/director’s delicate, deceptive and profoundly moving dramas about the forces that hold a family together (or don’t).” Indiewire

“A quietly profound exploration of identity, sacrifice, and the connection all human beings long for, whether or not their God or their family or their community approves.” Entertainment Weekly

SUSPIRIA (18) Dir: Luca Guadagnino Italy 2018 153m

Shot in the real-life contemporary art world, this is a darkly romantic psycho-thriller about a creative woman disenchanted with what modern life has to offer her.

Michael Moore’s latest is a provocative and comedic look at the times in which we live.
