IN THE LOUNGE PROJECT WILD THING (PG) 83m

Starring: George Clooney, Sandra Bullock

Dir: David Bond United Kingdom 2013 83m

Alfonso Cuarón (Y Tu Mamá También, Children of Men) directs this sci-fi thriller about a medical engineer and an astronaut (Sandra Bullock, George Clooney) working frantically to save themselves after an accident leaves them spinning hopelessly adrift through space. A technical jaw-dropper and a white-knuckle survival tale, this one will take your breath away in so many ways.

Filmmaker David Bond thinks Mother Nature needs a helping hand in getting his children’s attention away from the powerful competing demands of the modern world. With no previous marketing experience, he decides to appoint himself Marketing Director for Nature. Enlisting the help of marketing experts and with zero budget, he sets out to convince apathetic consumers, including his own family, of the benefits of this amazing, free, wonder product.

In 1950s Ireland, Catholic authorities shamed thousands of “fallen” Irish women into giving their children up for adoption, with no hope of ever seeing them again. Decades after being forced to give up her newborn son, Philomena embarks on a search to find him with the aid of a BBC reporter. Showing us her softer side, Dame Judi Dench gives a tour-de-force performance as Philomena, one that is perfectly complemented by Steve Coogan as Sixsmith. While revealing some of the darkest deeds that the Catholic Church is capable of, Philomena also reminds us of one of its greatest virtues: forgiveness. TIFF

Starring: Paulina García, Sergio Hernández

In Sebastian Lelio’s surprising and funny film, Paulina García delivers the performance of a lifetime, for which she deservedly won the Best Actress prize at Berlin. Garcia plays Gloria, who is 58 years old but still feels young. She goes to dance clubs but maintains a polite remove from all men, until she meets Rodolfo, with whom she decides to take the plunge into romance. Refreshing in the candour with which it depicts middle-age physicality and sexuality, and with a great soundtrack ranging from disco to cult Latin-American hits, Gloria is an uplifting comedy-drama with a transcendent climax.

SHORT TERM 12 (15)

With English Subtitles

Dir: Destin Cretton United States 2013 97m

Short Term 12 is told through the eyes of Grace, a twenty-something supervisor at a foster-care facility for at-risk teenagers. Passionate and tough, Grace is a formidable caretaker of the kids in her charge, but her own difficult past and the surprising future that suddenly presents itself, throw her into unforeseen confusion. While the subject matter is complex, this lovingly realised film finds truth – and humour – in unexpected places. SXSW

Starring: Isabelle Huppert, Louise Bourgoin, Pauline Etienne

Forced to join a convent against her will at 16, Suzanne describes, in a series of letters written in secret, her yearnings for freedom and her persecution and mistreatment at the hands of her fellow nuns. A moving adaptation of Denis Diderot’s treasured novel.

Forest Whitaker, Mariah Carey, Vanessa Redgrave, Clarence Williams III and Oprah Winfrey star in this adaptation of the life story of Eugene Allen (“Cecil Gaines” in the movie), an AfricanAmerican who spent 34 years as a White House butler. Serving during eight presidential terms, from 1952 to 1986, our protagonist bears witness to some of the most groundbreaking social changes in American history.

Dir: Abdellatif Kechiche France 2013 180m

“Is there a computer program in the house which can stand up against a human chess master?” That’s the question posed by mastermind of the game Pat Henderson, head of an annual computer chess tournament. Set in 1980 in a nondescript hotel, Computer Chess follows several young geniuses as they try to make the ultimate chess program to beat a human player. As the nerdy guys sweat through various social situations (especially with the one girl there), and the convention overlaps with a group of new-age couples in therapy, things get really strange.

Starring: Emma Thompson, Tom Hanks

THE BUTLER (12A)

Starring: Lea Seydoux, Adèle Exarchopoulos

Abdellatif Kechiche’s newest film, based on Julie Maroh’s graphic novel, was the sensation of this year’s Cannes Film Festival even before it was awarded the Palme d’Or. Adèle Exarchopoulos is Adèle, a young woman whose longings and ecstasies and losses are charted across a span of several years. Léa Seydoux is the older woman who excites her desire and becomes the love of her life. Blue pulses with gestures, embraces, furtive exchanges, and arias of joy and devastation, some verbal and some physical (including the film’s now celebrated sexual encounters between the two actresses).

IN THE LOUNGE

A doting father, Walt Disney promises his adoring daughters that he will bring their favourite fictional nanny Mary Poppins to the big screen. Little does Walt realise that surly author P.L. Travers has no intention of seeing her most famous creation misrepresented on the big screen, a fact that makes keeping his promise a difficult endeavour. Years later, however, when Travers’s book sales begin to slow, dwindling finances drive her to schedule a meeting with Disney to discuss the film rights to the beloved story. But she only grows more convinced that her initial decision may have been the best one.

Dir: Maja Borg United Kingdom 2012 93m

A unique love story challenging our collective and personal utopias in search of freedom. At the brink of losing the idealistic love of her life, filmmaker Maja Borg takes us on a poetic road trip through the financial collapse: from a broken past, via utopian futures, to the possibilities we have today. Seeing the economy as a human relationship, and by questioning her own fears, hopes and desires, she invites us to explore how we could live differently.

FUTURE MY LOVE (CERT TBC)

With a sly nod to Buñuel’s Belle de Jour, François Ozon returns with the story of Isabelle, a 17-year-old student on an unexpected journey of sexual self-discovery. After losing her virginity during a brief holiday romance, Isabelle returns home and, over the course of the following year, embarks on a secret life of prostitution. In many ways an extension of his mischievous In the House, Jeune et Jolie continues to explore the effects of rebellious teenage behaviour on the moral ideologies of the bourgeois family. TIFF
