Moving the action of August Strindberg’s canonical play from Sweden to County Fermanagh in the north of Ireland, Ullmann’s film opens as the eponymous Julie, daughter of an Anglo-Irish aristocrat, sets out to seduce one of her father’s senior servants, the worldly valet John. The charged flirtation between the two doubles as a kind of psychological gamesmanship, which deepens and darkens as the night rolls on.
The Reflektor Tapes is a fascinating insight into the making of Arcade Fire’s critically acclaimed album, Reflektor. It charts the band’s creative journey as they lay foundations for the album in Jamaica, commence recording in Montreal and play an impromptu gig at a Haitian hotel, before bringing their breath-taking show to packed arenas in LA and London. An authentic cinematic experience, meeting at the crossroads of documentary, music, art and personal history.
Helena Bonham Carter
An intense drama that traces the story of the foot soldiers of the early feminist movement as they fought for the right to vote. Maud has worked hard and exploitative hours in the same factory job since she was a girl; her only respite is the affection of her family. Her deepening friendship with fellow worker and activist Violet fuels her sense of injustice and she commits to the suffrage cause.
In a near-future dystopia, singledom is outlawed. Anyone not successfully paired up must report to The Hotel, where they have forty-five days to find a mate; otherwise they’re transformed into an animal of their choosing. In desperation, paunchy divorcee David flees, prepared to take his chances with The Loners, forest-dwelling fugitives with their own strict individualistic creed. The Lobster is both a bleakly hilarious skewering of fundamentalist diktats and rituals, and a tender plea for genuine intimacy amid society’s self-imposed absurdities. BFI

Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard are superb in Justin Kurzel’s thrillingly savage adaptation of Shakespeare’s tale of all-consuming passion and ambition set in war-torn 11th Century Scotland. “From the opening scarlet-andblack titles, Shakespeare’s play is more eviscerated than adapted, in a lean, mean and powerful piece of cinema.” Kate Muir, Times

BFI
“A lacerating study of class, power, and desire that unfolds one midsummer’s eve in the late 1800s.” TIFF

SUFFRAGETTE
An idealistic FBI agent (Emily Blunt) joins two shadowy government operatives (Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro) in a high-risk, cross-border sting against a Mexican cartel boss, in this gritty drug-war thriller from Québec’s Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners).
Loosely based on the tale of the very first giraffe to set foot in France, Zarafa (‘giraffe’ in Arabic) is an epic journey from 19th century Sudan to Paris. Ten year-old Maki escapes from a cruel slave trader and meets friendly giraffe Zarafa. When Zarafa is sent to Paris as a gift for the French King, Maki sets out to rescue her. Along the way he meets Bedouin princes, feisty Mediterranean pirates, a pair of very resourceful cows and a hippopotamus with a problem. This beautifully crafted hand-drawn animation takes the spirit of classic Disney and adds a splash of contemporary humour and social comment to give it an appeal for the broadest of audiences. MACBETH (15)
MISS JULIE (12A)
Dir: Justin Kurzel UK/France/USA 2015 113m
Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard are superb in Justin Kurzel’s thrillingly savage adaptation of Shakespeare’s tale of all-consuming passion and ambition set in war-torn 11th Century Scotland. “From the opening scarlet-andblack titles, Shakespeare’s play is more eviscerated than adapted, in a lean, mean and powerful piece of cinema.” Kate Muir, Times

Dir: Kahlil Joseph Canada 2015 88m
Starring: Carey Mulligan,
Starring: Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz
BFI
“A lacerating study of class, power, and desire that unfolds one midsummer’s eve in the late 1800s.” TIFF
Jeanie Finlay uncovers the extraordinary life of Jimmy ‘Orion’ Ellis and the ‘Elvis is alive’ myth.

Veteran filmmaker Albert Maysles pays tribute to Iris Apfel, a highly original 93-year-old New York style icon. Iris is a supreme example of ageing outrageously, with her own unique taste and following. A film about creativity and how, even at Iris’ age, a soaring spirit continues to inspire.

[In English] Family Matinee prices apply.

BFI
“A lacerating study of class, power, and desire that unfolds one midsummer’s eve in the late 1800s.” TIFF
Jeanie Finlay uncovers the extraordinary life of Jimmy ‘Orion’ Ellis and the ‘Elvis is alive’ myth.

[In English] Family Matinee prices apply.

BFI

In 1975 Brian Clough had gone from being football’s most exciting young manager to being seen as impossible to work with. His only offer of work came from a run-down, second division club, Nottingham Forest whose brief glory days in the 1950s were seen as well behind them. With interviews from every player of that remarkable time, I Believe in Miracles tells how Clough pulled off the greatest team story ever told.

In the heart of Tuscany, the dusty terra-cotta-tinged city of Siena is home to the world’s oldest horse race: the Palio. Twice a summer jockeys representing ten of the city’s historic districts maneuver through a frenzied course in the central Piazza del Campo, cheered and jeered in equal measure by passionate local supporters. With breath-taking cinematography, this enthralling documentary captures the intensity of the event as well as the beauty of Siena.

Formed during a fire ritual that burned down their flat, Killing Joke exploded onto the British post-punk music scene in 1978. They rapidly built a mythical status from their esoteric beliefs, controversial imagery and genredefining experimentation. Through a barrage of music, archive footage and deeply personal interviews shot over the last 12 years, The Death and Resurrection Show provides the definitive story of Killing Joke – from rituals at Stonehenge to recording sessions in the Pyramids. Advised cert 18.
From Lemmy filmmaker Wes Orshoski comes the story of the long-ignored pioneers of punk: The Damned, the first U.K. punks on wax and the first to cross the Atlantic. The Damned: Don’t You Wish That We Were Dead includes appearances from Chrissie Hynde, Mick Jones (The Clash), Lemmy and members of Pink Floyd, Black Flag, GNR, the Sex Pistols, Blondie, Buzzcocks, and more. Shot around the globe over three years, the film charts the band’s complex history and infighting, as it celebrated its 35th anniversary. Advised cert 18.

Mark Baker and Neville Astley’s animations, including Peppa Pig and Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom, are known around the world. This retrospective programme brings together highlights from their BAFTAwinning and Oscar®-nominated artistic careers, including work made separately - The Hill Farm and the joyously upbeat Mobile Home - to work made together including the little known, but hilarious chivalric satire The Big Knights. Gary Thomas, associate director of Animate Projects, the experimental animation agency, and a programme manager for film at the British Council, will introduce this screening.

We are offering the opportunity for 20 young people aged 16-19 to take part in an intensive three month “Experience Film” programme taking place at Broadway in evenings and weekends between 19 October 2015 and 11 February 2016.

We are offering the opportunity for 20 young people aged 16-19 to take part in an intensive three month “Experience Film” programme taking place at Broadway in evenings and weekends between 19 October 2015 and 11 February 2016. There will be about 92 hours of activity encompassing practical filmmaking and developing an understanding of film theory and the film industry, alongside the production of short films.
