Displaying both a nasty edge and a playful sense of humour - but thankfully, never at the same time Kill List is several cuts above its fellow midbudget horror brethren. Artfully made and sensitively acted, this is a slippery, teasing thriller that trusts its audience to follow the kitchen-sink marital quarrels as closely as the things going bump in the night. Though a leftfield final reel might divide audiences, it’s an effectively twisted piece of work.

Who are we - and who do we think we are? How do we make the selves we present to the world - and who are we really, underneath the social masks we wear every day? These are some of the questions posed by Self Made, an extraordinary debut feature by acclaimed British artist Gillian Wearing. A hybrid undertaking, Self Made is at once documentary, artwork, social experiment and performance project bringing together a diverse group from the British public, non-actors every one, and offering them the chance to discover something about themselves through performance. Cary Fukunaga brings a steely vision to this compelling adaptation of Charlotte Brontë’s renowned novel. When Jane Eyre is sent to work as a governess at Thornfield Manor alongside housekeeper Mrs Fairfax (Judi Dench), she is intensely attracted to and repelled by the singularly abrupt and intelligent master of the house, Rochester. Australian actress Wasikowska augments her spectral beauty with the perfect combination of fragility and independence in a performance that cements her reputation as a sparkling new talent and will make empathetic bosoms heave the world over. Sydney Film Festival

Starring: Otto Jespersen, Glenn Erland Tosterud

A heart-pounding suspense thriller set in the rugged and atmospheric Derbyshire landscape. Cassie Naylor’s husband has mysteriously disappeared and now she’s desperately trying to run their farm alone with her two girls. An enigmatic stranger - claiming to be an old friend of her husband - arrives at the smallholding and soon charms his way into their lives. However, his altruism has a sinister edge... Frightfest

Starring: Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy

Brutal and beautiful, Nicholas Winding Refn’s film noir is as black as they come. Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan star as a mysteriously self-contained Hollywood stunt driver who can turn on a dime between tender and terrifying and the young mother whose family he tries to help when he agrees to drive a getaway car for her ex-con husband. Then the job goes south, way south. Right from the amazing opening action sequence on the streets of downtown L.A., you know you are in the hands of a hard-boiled master. Refn, the Danishborn director of the Pusher trilogy and Bronson, brings a savage poetry to this haunting, violent thriller. LA Film Fest

Starring: Gianni Di Gregorio,

Justine and Michael are celebrating their marriage at a sumptuous party in the home of her sister and brotherin-law. Meanwhile, the planet, Melancholia, is heading towards Earth...

Gianni has escaped mamma’s domain for long enough to have taken on a wife, who now regards him with affectionate disdain. He pines for a time when women returned his gaze and feels the urge to break out, to beguile the lovely young things he sees everywhere… or, failing that, maybe look up some of those old girlfriends scared off long ago by mamma. A wistful, funny ode to female power and a wry apologia for hopeless male fantasy.

When his father does not return from a mission in a faraway forest, Yusuf summons all of his courage and goes in search for his father. A journey into the unknown...

KUNG FU PANDA 2

SEPTEMBER 2011

A splendid new film adaptation of John Le Carre’s Cold War-era espionage classic “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.” It follows middle-aged, pen-pushing British intelligence operative George Smiley who must find the identity of a Soviet mole within ‘The Circus’, the highest echelons of MI6. As well as Oldman, Firth and Hardy, the high profile cast includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Ciaran Hinds, Mark Strong, Toby Jones and John Hurt. Peter Morgan (The Queen, The Damned United) adapted the script.

MELANCHOLIA

Karlovy Vary International Film Festival

This slyly compelling and dryly humorous hybrid details what happens when a group of documentary filmmakers attempt to expose an infamous bearskin poacher - who actually turns out to be Norway’s only living troll hunter. Culling the Christianblood-chugging ogres has become a necessity because they are the real reason behind global warming; hiding in dense forests and underneath snowy mountain ranges. And some trolls are massive, Godzilla-sized, in this silly, scary and sincere balance of horror, adventure and mockumentary that both reinvents and pays homage to the creature classics of old.
