Elegant weddings are held overlooking an Atlantic sunset from the wedding gazebo, barefoot in the sand or in a glass-panelled pavilion surrounded by Bimini’s Bay. The nearby Berry Islands are a cluster of 30 miniscule tropical islands and 100 cays. Honeymooners should check out the private island of Little Whale Cay Resort (www.littlewhalecay.com). Newlyweds in search of remote southerly islands can head for San Salvador & Rum Cay with its Riding Rock Resort & Marina (www.ridingrock.com) and Club Med Columbus Isle (www.clubmed.co.uk) or Acklins & Crooked Island and stay at Pittstown Point’s Crooked Island Lodge (www.pittstownpoint.com). Mayaguana has around 300 residents and is way, way down south. Stay at Baycaner Beach Resort (www.baycanerbeach.com). And finally, castaway doesn’t even begin to describe Inagua which has more flamingos than people. Honeymoon at Enrica’s Inn (www.enricasinn.com) or Gaga’s Nest (www.discoverinagua.com).

Weddings in The Bahamas If you’ve always dreamed of a tropical island wedding in the sun, The Islands of The Bahamas are the perfect match. These islands may be tiny, but they have enough glitz, glamour and castaway chic for any bride and groom in search of a wedding in paradise. It could be an extravagant event with all the trimmings or a simple ceremony on a deserted beach. The islands offer endless stunning settings to tie the knot from the picturesque columns of a 14th century French cloister to dolphin lagoons.

• There are many religious faiths represented in The Bahamas which offer church weddings. • Wed amid the ancient columns of a 14th century Augustinian cloister shipped across from Lourdes in the 1920s and rebuilt on glorious Paradise Island - with wonderful views over Nassau Harbour. • Say your vows among the exotic bougainvillea, hibiscus and gardenia of Nassau’s Botanical Gardens, Gardens of the Groves in Freeport, Grand Bahama Island or in the scenic grounds of your hotel. • Wed on a white, gold or pink sand beach on any of the main islands or choose any number of islets, uninhabited cays with rugged shorelines and sandy coves for castaway “I do’s”. • Exchange vows on board the deck of a fabulous party boat as the sun sets. Then dance the night away with your wedding party as you cruise between islands. • For the full flavour of The Bahamas, have your wedding coordinator create a Junkanoo styled wedding and reception. Junkanoo is a famous carnival held every Boxing Day and New Year’s Day with extravagant costumes and performers. • For a memorable day, wed at Dolphin Encounters at Blue Lagoon off Nassau where the dolphins can be your ring bearers. Scuba weddings at the colourful coral reef of Crystal Cay are also available.
