MariahMaloney, MFA Professor Mariah Maloney has danced all over the world with modern dance icon Trisha Brown and is nationally recognized in her field. Today, through her work in Brockport’s Dance Department, Maloney conducts research and teaches the craft while working to create opportunities for her students. “This year, I facilitated exposure and opportunity for 24 students to be involved in the professional dance world as performers, scholars, and educators,” Maloney says. “The ongoing wealth of learning that weaves in and out of and walks alongside teaching, scholarship and relationship building is awesome at Brockport. I am blessed to be spending my life engaged in this important work.”

Brockport is one of just 672 institutions in the world that is accredited by The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) — the gold standard in business education. That puts our business school in the top five percent of business schools internationally, while our students pay one of the lowest tuition rates in the nation. Our world-class faculty are passionate about teaching undergraduate students and preparing them for meaningful and successful careers. This instruction takes place in an intimate atmosphere that is conducive to learning and mentoring. And while teaching is their top priority, they are also active scholars who stay current in their disciplines. Internships provide our students with an invaluable pipeline into professional practice. And often, Brockport is presented with more internship opportunities for our students than we are able to fill. That’s because they arrive ready to work. For example, our finance students have the opportunity to become Bloomberg certified. We possess the same Bloomberg terminal that they’ll be asked to use by their employer when they enter the field. But for our students, no training is necessary.

Students are being accepted to more competitive graduate programs, finding better jobs and moving up the corporate ladder more quickly.

DiscoverOurSchools School of Education and Human Services Students come to our School of Education and Human Services seeking to become a social worker, counselor, teacher, public or school administrator or a criminal justice practitioner — and they acquire a blend of practical and theoretical knowledge that equips them to do just that. They’ll also be prepared to make a positive impact on society. Each student’s education — regardless of major — addresses three key themes: Ethics: Our graduates won’t always have a supervisor standing over them. They’ll be independent practitioners. Therefore, making ethical decisions should be intuitive. We’ll ensure that it is. Diversity/cultural competence: Each community is unique. We develop practitioners who appreciate the richness of the communities they serve and possess the skills necessary to effectively engage with complex societies. Social justice: Our students believe that their chosen profession should have a social benefit. They are encouraged to discover ways they can take what they learned during their Brockport experience and advocate on behalf of disadvantaged populations. Practical skills along with these key competencies combine to prepare our students for long, successful and difference-making careers in their field of choice.
AnnW.Bunch, PhD Dr. Ann Bunch is a Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Anthropology, an accomplishment that less than 100 individuals can claim. She has traveled the world, to far-reaching sites from Vietnam to Russia, identifying missing service members and civilians. Bunch seeks to translate those real-word experiences to her students. “I teach to instill a habit of critical thinking: to inspire my students to ask ‘why?’ At the end of the day, they need to be able to arrive at the ‘aha’ moments for themselves.”

DiscoverOurSchools School of Health And Human Performance Students in our School of Health and Human Performance are the beneficiaries of top-flight instruction from some of the finest faculty in the country—faculty who choose to come to Brockport because they want to spend a considerable portion of their time in a classroom, not strictly in a research laboratory. They work hard to ensure that our students’ education is not only grounded in sound theory, but that they have an opportunity to put that theory into practice. Nearly every program within the school requires students to complete an internship before graduating. That’s because we believe that an undergraduate experience is not complete without an opportunity to apply the skills learned in the classroom. ElizabethHeavey, PhD Dr. Elizabeth Heavey brings both passion and high expectations to the Nursing program. JacquesRinchard, PhD Undergraduate students are essential to the research conducted by Jacques Rinchard, PhD, who teaches in our Department of Environmental Science and Biology. He hires them to work in his research laboratory and takes them out onto Lake Ontario to conduct fieldwork. “Lectures are beneficial, but giving our students the opportunity to be hands-on out in the field or in the lab is even more important,” says Rinchard, who examines the reproductive potential of key fish species in the Great Lakes. “We put our students in a position where they are working with the same equipment and doing the types of things they’ll be doing in their careers.”

School of The Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Jill Stewardson had her eyes opened in the summer of 2013 when she participated in Brockport’s Archaeological Field school in Jordan. She learned about more than archaeology. She learned about another culture. “I learned that I can disagree with another culture but still respect it. I now have a whole new perspective.”
School of Business Administration and Economics By the end of her sophomore year, Mary Dray possessed the skills necessary to be coveted by a Fortune 100 company. She spent her summer working to increase AT&T’s market share in upstate New York. “I learned about branding and how we, as employees, must present ourselves to the public in order to make the biggest difference.”
School of Education and Human Services Andrew Walik emerged from his research methods class with three things he never expected: an interest in academic research, an opportunity to present at a national conference, and a mentor in Professor Melchor de Guzman. “I was hesitant to take on a research project, but Dr. de Guzman helped ease my fears and helped me become more confident.”
School of Health and Human Performance Spending a week coaching an athlete at Camp Abilities, a one-week sports camp for children with visual impairments, gave Stephanie Bond the opportunity to put the skills she learned in her adapted physical education classes into action. “It was the best experience of my college career. I learned just as much from the kids as they learned from me.”
School of Science and Mathematics Matt Luther’s summer job was anything but typical. He spent his summer inside a Brockport research laboratory—preparing for his future. Matt researched the role of the Rad52 protein in nuclear and mitochondrial DNA regulation. “It’s invaluable.
