Coaching Staff Ben Wineburg
HEAD MEN’S LACROSSE COACH Ben Wineburg, 2016 SUNYAC Coach of the Year, was hired to The College at Brockport men’s lacrosse coaching staff in 200 and immediately posted the program’s first winning record since 1979. As of 2015, Wineburg’s career record stands at 81-118. In the 2016 season the team posted a 12-4 overall record and made it to the SUNYAC Championship Game. Wineburg led a 2010 squad to an 8-6 record with three losses by one goal and another loss by two goals. The eight wins set a new school record, which was later broken, with the team’s biggest win of the season coming against a nationally-ranked Geneseo team. In the six previous seasons, Wineburg led the Golden Eagles to at least five wins, five times. Since restarting the program from scratch in 2001, Wineburg has coached 25 All-SUNYAC selections including first-team selection and conference rookie of the year David Shield in 2007. Prior to coaching at Brockport, Wineburg set school records at a goalie for the Nazareth Golden Flyers and found himself as the assistant coach there before joining the Golden Eagles. Jon Van Huben
ASSISTANT MEN’S LACROSSE COACH Jon Van Huben ‘98 started his second stint as assistant men’s lacrosse coach for the Golden Eagles in 2011. A native of Rochester, NY, Van Huben returns to college coaching after five years as an assistant & head lacrosse coach at Brockport High School. While at the high school, Van Huben assisted in the day-to-day functions of the second year varsity program (2007), planning practices, implementing game strategies and fulfilling other administrative duties. During his five-year career at Brockport High School, Van Huben was named Assistant Coach of the Year in 2008 for Division III. In 2009, Brockport earned the school’s first division title.
Jesse Elliot
ASSISTANT MEN’S LACROSSE COACH Jesse Elliot joined The College at Brockport Men’s Lacrosse coaching staff in 2015 after an excellent career with the Golden Eagles from 2010-2013. Elliot holds several all-time school records for Brockport in lacrosse including career points, points in a season and goals in a season In his senior season of 2013, Elliot became Brockport’s all-time leading scorer with 134 career points after setting another Golden Eagles record for points in a season with 53. His 36 goals on the season rank second only to himself, as he scored 37 in 2012. Elliot also earned various awards through his time as a player for Brockport. After his senior season, Elliot was named to the Second-Team All-SUNYAC. He was also previously named to the SUNYAC All-Academic team, while earning multiple SUNYAC Lacrosse Player of the Week awards throughout his career.
Liam Cannon In his freshman year, Liam Cannon posted some incredible numbers scoring 45 points off 36 goals and 9 assists and his shots on goal percentage of .818 led the team (shooting more than 10 shots). Cannon posted two games with 6 goals, one of which against conference for SUNY Oneonta and another against Benedictine University where he also added four assists for a total of 10 points. Prior to playing for the Golden Eagles, Cannon played lacrosse at Shenendehowa High School where he was named to the Suburban Council All-Star second-team while leading his team in both goals and points. He is currently pursuing a degree in marketing.
Zach Cook In the 2016 season, Zach Cook secured 158-270 faceoffs in the X, scored three goals, had two assists and scooped up a team high 93 ground balls. In some games, Cook dominated the X going 14-19 against Alfred, 13-16 against Keuka, 10-12 against Hilbert, 13-16 against Benedictine and 18-21 against Geneseo. Prior to joining the Golden Eagles, Cook played lacrosse and football at Vestal High School where he was second team all-league in lacrosse and a two-time section IV class A all-star in football. He is currently undecided in a major.
Highlight Players Brendan Fitzgerald I f you were a Golden Eagle and scored a goal in the 2016 season, it was most likely coming off an assist from Brendan Fitzgerald. He finished the season with 18 assists, second on the team, scored eight goals and scooped up 21 ground balls. Prior to joining the Golden Eagles, Fitzgerald played lacrosse at Kellenberg Memorial High School where he also played football. He was an all-league pick in both sports. Fitzgerald is currently pursuing a degree in communications.
Jake Guidice In his junior campaign, Jake Guidice led the Golden Eagles in points scored (46) off 33 goals and 13 assists. Throughout the season he posted six games with three or more goals and will continue to be a source of steady scoring in his senior season. Prior to joining the Golden Eagles, Guidice played lacrosse at Webster Thomas High School where he was an All-Greater Rochester selection, section VI All-Tournament team pick, all-league first-team attack and player in the Rochester US Lacrosse Senior All-Star Game. He is currently seeking a degree in business administration and computer information systems.
Bob Boozer Field Brockport’s football team plays on Bob Boozer Field at Eunice Kennedy Shriver Stadium. With seating for 10,000 fans, it is the 3rd largest on-campus Division III football stadium in the country. It features a new A-Turf playing field, a high-tech scoreboard with message center display capabilities, a newly installed speaker system, bleacher seating along both sidelines and a state-of-the art press box.
NCAA Division III Athletics The College at Brockport men’s lacrosse team is a member of the NCAA Division III and competes in the State University of New York Athletic Conference. Since 2000, the program has been coached by Ben Wineburg and since then, he’s been able to grow the program into a SUNYAC title contender. Since restarting the program from scratch in 2001, Wineburg has coached 25 All-SUNYAC selections including first-team selection and conference rookie of the year David Shield in 2007. The Golden Eagles have had at least one all-conference selection each year since 2004 when Ben Bullock started the streak with a 2nd-team selection. The program is coming off its most successful season finishing the year with a 12-4 record having their season come to a close after a one goal loss to SUNY Cortland in the conference championship game.
Athletic Training Room Six full-time staff members with Athletic Training Certifications offer 90 combined years of experience in athletic training. The team provides comprehensive care to our student-athletes through the use of the latest technology in therapeutic modalities as well as innovative functional assessment and rehabilitation techniques. Our Athletic Training Room provides student-athletes the benefit of high quality rehabilitation and physical training equipment. The facility has five taping tables, 13 treatment tables, three exercise bikes, one elliptical machine, one stair climber as well as a whirlpool machine.
Bill Steele Athletic Performance Weight Room It’s not a fitness center. It’s an athletic performance training facility, where Golden Eagle athletes prepare for their competitors through a state-of-the-art strength and conditioning program. Athletes will be able to push their bodies to maximize their athletic talents using the College’s high-speed treadmills, TRX trainers, kettlebells, inlaid Olympic platforms, free-motion functional trainers, VertiMax platforms, Elitefts Colligate power racks, speed and power sleds, an Ariel Computerized Exercise System (ACES) machine, and much more. All of our athletes train under the watch of experienced instructors.
the SERC Opened in 2012, the Special Events Recreation Center, a state-of-the-art facility, is a 138,000 square foot three-story building that serves as the home for Campus Recreation and the Golden Eagle Track and Field Program. In addition to serving as a venue for major campus events, the SERC—which consists of a dynamic fitness center and the impressive Field House—equips students with all the tools necessary to stay physically fit. Residence Halls Living on campus at Brockport means more than just a place to sleep. The college residential experience serves as the foundation for developing friendships that last a lifetime. Our vibrant and safe living-learning environment helps students become successful members of our campus community. A resident director (RD) and a staff resident assistant (RA) provide leadership for each residence hall community. RDs and RAs are excellent sources of information and will help students make decisions, support students in developing responsibility and concern for others, and assist in acquiring a plan for academic success.
Dining Halls Students have many options when it comes to dining and meal plans. The College’s dining services are regularly ranked high within the SUNY system. Meal plans are designed to provide variety, flexibility and plenty of healthy dining options. Our diversified menus include vegan, vegetarian, and ethnic entrees, allowing students to enjoy their favorite foods and expand their palates. The two main dining halls, Brockway and Harrison, feature a wide selection of food stations and made-to-order choices. In addition to the two main dining halls, there are a number of cafÊs, late-night spots, and retail locations that offer a variety of meal options throughout the day.
Drake Memorial Library Drake Memorial Library houses nearly a half million items, plus online databases, research guides, the College Archives and more. It includes multiple computer labs and meeting/study rooms, enhancing the learning experience with audio, video, graphic, and web-based content. The library provides opportunities for 3D printing/scanning in the Makerspace and has a variety of tech tools available for loan. Librarians offer in-person as well as online research assistance and consultation. And, if you need a little caffeine for your study session, the Aerie CafĂŠ provides coffee and a varying menu to satisfy your cravings.
