Following Traditional Hat Etiquette If you're a fan of donning a hat as part of your attire, you're not alone. Hats for males have been a staple in men's fashion for many years and this craze will likely not go away any time soon. While many men wear hats while working, running errands, and when they are out with friends, most are unaware of the proper decorum for wearing a hat. With regards to etiquette, there are certain guidelines that should be followed when wearing a hat. Know the Terms There are a few terms that you'll need to familiarize yourself with in an effort to fully understand hat etiquette. Synonymous with putting your hat on, individuals frequently refer to it as donning a hat. If you doff your hat, you are taking it off. With a soft touch of the rim where you tug it forward, that will be known as tipping your hat and is a form of hello. When grabbing the full region towards the top of the hat, that is understood as grabbing the crown. It is important that you get to know these terms and how they are used before you actively start wearing a hat frequently. Taking Your Hat Off and Putting it On Once you don your hat, or put it on, you don't grab it from the rim then stick it on your head. To be sure the shape of the hat does not become damage, it is essential that you put the hat on appropriately each and every time. When you put on your hat, you need to grab it from the crown and then place it on your head. Alternatively, if you would like to take off the hat, put your hand in the same position at the crown and remove it. Keep the inside of the hat facing you continually when you do this because it is important. It will definitely pay off even though it may take a little practice and patience. When Your Hat Should be On or Off Although hats for men look great with almost any outfit, there are certain circumstances where it is proper for you to take your hat off or leave it on. The rules regarding when to keep your hat on or take it off are relatively simple. Obviously, it is ok to put a hat on your head when going outside. When you enter a building, an elevator or a public area, it is generally ok to just leave the hat on. Even so, you should be taking off the hat when going into any private building or home and when you encounter a group of women you plan on talking with. It's also wise to doff your hat when you come into the presence of someone you deem important. This is actually a sign of respect and cordiality. Tipping Your Hat Whenever you make eye contact with someone, resist the urge to tip your hat to every person you come across. Tipping of the hat must only be done for certain conditions. While it is suitable to tip the hat to anyone your encounter in public places, there is no need to remove the hat except if you are engaging in a conversation with someone. When you walk by a group of guys or a male acquaintance while outside, it is considered acceptable to tip the hat slightly. There are other circumstances the hat can be tipped which you can decide for yourself based on who you encounter while donning a hat. suitsandmore.com
