MENTAL HEALTH

WARRIORS

Your Mental Health Warriors are here for you A little while ago, we asked you to fill in an anonymous survey to let us know how what you wanted us to focus on as Mental Health Warriors. We received a fantastic response – thank you to everyone who took part. We have used your survey results to shape our official Mental Health Warriors pledge. This is in addition to the practical stuff like making the sickness policy easy to access, and finding ways in which we can enable you to get in touch with us discreetly, which we’re looking into.

We pledge to… Listen without judgement and with sensitivity Provide you with resources that you require Put Broker Network’s resources to good use wherever we can Assist in getting you the appropriate help Provide training for your line managers Promote a culture of acceptance and understanding Promote awareness of what mental health is (and isn’t)

OUR

Hi all,

Welcome to the first edition of Our Voice for 2019 As I said at the Pavilions during our Live@Home communications event, I want to continue improving our working environment and ensure that we do lots of little (but important!) things that make your life easier. We started off as we mean to go on with the revival of the Tuck Shop, and we listened to you on our festive opening hours to make Christmas Eve a half day across the business. Next on the list is the reintroduction of a social budget for each team to use every quarter. Whether it’s going out for lunch, a few pints after work (Guinness for me please), or a crazy golf challenge, how you spend the funds is entirely up to you. The only stipulation is that the funds don’t roll over to the next quarter as we want to make sure that we’re getting together throughout the year. Speaking of socialising, I’m looking forward to seeing lots of you at the Quiz on 27th March – over 100 of you have already RSVP’d to say you’ll be there which is fantastic to see. Personally, I’m crossing my fingers that we get a round on the intricacies of Gaelic Football… It’s been about six weeks since the announcement that I’d stepped up as CEO and I’m incredibly grateful for the support I’ve had from all of you as I’ve settled into the role. During that time I’ve been having one to one meetings with people from all areas and levels of the business so that I can fully understand how everything works. I’m so thankful to each of those individuals – firstly, thanks for turning up! And secondly, thank you for your honest feedback. I promise you that I’m listening and I’m going to use your ideas to make improvements that will make a difference across the board. We’re off to a flying start already in 2019, and as ever I’ll need the support of each and every one of you to continue to live up to the outstanding reputation that we have built for ourselves in the marketplace. A huge thank you in advance for all of your ongoing hard work. It’s going to be a vintage year. Yours,

Our 2019

Charities

Every year we do some amazing charity work and last year we raised an incredible £13,525. We know that together we can make a difference again and go even further in 2019, raising even more funds for those in need.

We wanted you to be involved in the decision this year and that’s why we asked you to nominate causes that you thought we should support. Thank you to everyone who suggested a charity and to all of you who voted for the charitable organisations you felt we should back – we had a brilliant response for both! The votes are in! We’re pleased to say that our 2019 chosen charities for are:

ONE TO WATCH: BIBA 2019

The biggest broking event of the calendar year takes place on 15th-16th May at Manchester Central. Take a look at how we’re making our presence this year bigger and better than ever…

As those of you who have been part of the Broker Network family for a while will know, we try to up our game every year to make our stand the talk of the town. In 2018 our BDMs and Communications & Events team were so successful at generating interest, we were actually told off by the organisers for spilling over and taking up too much space due to our stand’s popularity! This year, we want to go one step further again and with last year’s comments from the organisers in mind, we feel that we’ve outgrown our current space and it’s time to move into an even more prominent position. The large central stand spaces would usually be out of our budget, but as Broker Network, BN Partners and Compass are all part of the Bravo Group it made sense to combine our costs by sharing the space. We’re splitting it into two completely separate stands, which sit back to back. This is fantastically positive for us in terms of positioning as it will allow us to take centre stage and sit right alongside the likes of Allianz, RSA and Ageas. Our new stand number is E25, and you can see where we’re based on the floor plan opposite. We will of course keep you updated on the Broker Network’s stand theme and designs as they take shape over the coming months; as well as how the Compass stand will look and feel. Please do support us as you always do by mentioning BIBA in your conversations with Members and Partners, and encouraging them to pay us a visit – it really does make a big impact on our footfall.

60 SECS

60 SECONDS WITH...

See if you can seperate fact from fiction about the newest member of Exco... True or false? •

He started off professional life in the old apprenticeship YTS scheme, filing and emptying bins* He has a twin*

He was once filmed running across a bridge in Amsterdam dressed as a banana… with his friends, all dressed as BananaMan, chasing after him. Sadly the footage no longer exists…*

Quickfire round What made you want to join the Network? I’ve been an independent broker all of my life; even working in the corporate arena for the last few years, I’ve still felt like an independent broker. I’m hoping to add value with our Partners given my 20 years’ experience acquiring brokers, and having had my own business acquired – so I’ve seen both sides of the coin.

RICHARD TUPLIN

Born in Mexico and having lived in South Africa for a few years as a child, our Chief Development Officer Richard Tuplin has now settled down at the Home of Independent Broking after 26 years in the insurance industry.

What three things would you take with you to a desert island? My wife, our dog and an iPad. What was the first single you bought? Unbelievable by EMF. There are some guilty pleasures in my music collection though… such as Let it Go from Frozen! What can you not abide? Bad behaviour – I can’t stand it when people aren’t treated fairly. What’s your favourite book? I’m a big Ian Fleming fan for relaxing, but I like to study leadership styles and developing my own, so I’d say my favourite book is Spike by Renée Caryoll. When you’re not at the Network, where can we find you? Probably sat in McDonald’s service station… On a serious note, I’m always meeting people. Sometimes you meet people and that particular time it’s not obvious where they’re going to fit in your life, but it’s important to remember them and have left a positive impression on them. *All of these statements are true.

ETHOS BROKERS: CONNECTED THINKING, INDEPENDENT GROWTH

Launching this quarter

Many of you will agree that Broker Network Partners wasn’t one of our finest branding moments. It has become confused and has little goodwill. It also limits our opportunities with the wider broking market, including Compass members. As it’s still a relatively young brand, the Communications team has worked with the Partners team to develop a new brand identity, and we’re now putting the finishing touches to our logo for Ethos Brokers, with the strapline ‘Connected thinking, independent growth’. The new logo is being shared with Partners this week and we’re hoping to show you more at the Let’s Talk session on 12th February with a full launch taking place late February, early March.

Brokers behind the wheel... A few of our BDMs will have their 15 minutes of fame in February when we launch our new partnership with Markerstudy. Because the three Markerstudy products that will go live to Members and Partners first are all motor themed, we’re playing on their quirky brand personality to run a video campaign that introduces the products. Derek Bradshaw, Simon Kerry and James McCarthy will each interrogate their counterparts at Markerstudy, with the action captured on the dashcam of a dual branded car. Members and Partners will then have the chance to win a motor-themed prize by guessing which landmark the car is obscuring at the end of the video. Keep a look out on OSCAR for behind the scenes footage and what we’re sure will be some hilarious outtakes!

FROM ME TO YOU (TO SAY THANK YOU) As you will have seen in Des’ intro piece, he’s keen to keep the momentum going from Live@Home when he allowed an extra half day’s holiday for Christmas Eve; and the reintroduction of the Tuck Shop this month. Des will be introducing a new change ‘From Me to You’ every month to make the little improvements that cause a big difference to our working lives. Next month’s ‘From Me to You’ is the reinstatement of a social budget for each team to use every quarter. It’s up to you how you spend the cash, as long as the funds don’t roll over to the next quarter so that each team is getting together throughout the year. Feel free to #LifeatBN on Twitter and LinkedIn too so that we can keep up to date with what you’re all up to on social media, and send any snaps to internalcommunications@brokernetwork.co.uk

WELCOME TO THE WORLD! Huge congratulations to Andy Herdman and his partner Kirsty who have welcomed their little girl into the world. Freya McDonald Herdman was born at 4.27am on 29th January, weighing 7lbs 10oz.

WEDDING BELLS IN THE AIR Congratulations to Clare Wakeford and Jenny Hemmings who both got engaged over the Christmas period. Jenny was whisked away to London by her now fiancé Jamie on 19th December where they went to the Winter Wonderland before going for dinner at Marco Pierre White’s London Steakhouse where he asked her to marry him. Jenny says it was a complete surprise and she had no idea. The meal was a gift from the Risk & Compliance team who booked the restaurant for them. The couple have been together for four years after being set up on a blind date.

Clare got engaged on New Year’s Eve at Centre Parks, underneath the stars and the fireworks. Her partner Mark asked her if she wanted her last Christmas present as they watched the firework display. Clare said yes and Mark then pulled out a ring and asked her to marry him. She of course said yes! We're looking forward to hearing all about both of Jenny and Clare's wedding plans!
