Message from the Leader, Councillor Geoff Denaro I am delighted to see this Summer edition as it highlights all the wonderful summer fun which awaits us. The new municipal year has just begun for us and I welcome Cllr Caroline Spencer as Chairman for the year ahead. As we approach our ten year anniversary of embarking on shared services with Redditch Borough Council I was pleased with the feedback from the Corporate Peer Challenge we had earlier this year where we invited colleagues from councils and the LGA to talk to our officers, members and partners. It was refreshing to have a look at ourselves through someone else’s eyes and there were no surprises. But reading the feedback in black and white has encouraged me to re-evaluate the direction of this council and how we are going to get there. Working together and being more bold are just two of things I will be focussing on. But please read on and I hope to see you at some of the marvellous events we have going on this summer.

Better Bromsgrove Round-Up Word from Cheryl Welsh, Centres Manager There’s been lots going on across the district to help create a Better Bromsgrove to visit, live and work in. Following the fantastic Christmas events which saw thousands of people flock to events across the district, there have been Easter events, town centre table football tournaments and the Bromsgrove Society & Friends of St John’s photo booth were a part of St George’s Day celebrations. And we have lots to look forward too – not least the Barnt Green Buskers, a Worcester Road street carnival and a skate ramp too. The Friends of St Here’s a round-up of the year so far! Easter Eggstravaganza
The Easter Bunny gets spicy at Indian Deli Selly Punjabis and is on a roll at Phoenix Flooring and Bedrooms.
Our Easter Bunny went hopping mad across Bromsgrove, visiting shops and local businesses to select which ones would take part in our egg hunt. Youngsters were invited to find all the pictures of eggs hidden in the shops with the chance to win a prize.
Business Link-Up

The town centre radio scheme which links up key partner to ensure shoppers and visitors are kept safes, has been upgraded from analogue to digital. It means the radios, which link the Bromsgrove pubs, Street Pastors, CCTV operators and Police have improved coverage and effectiveness. There are around 50 radios being used in retail and licensed venues to exchange information of suspected shoplifters, banned persons and incidents. The Rubery radio link scheme has also been approved and radios are being installed into village businesses in the next few weeks.

A Great Year in Prospect for the Bromsgrove Festival 2018 will be a great year for the arts in Bromsgrove. In its 58th year of existence, the 2018 festival programme will be in the same wide ranging community based style as before. It continues to focus on arts and cultural activity and will maintain the range and quality of such events provided in previous years. Alongside this, the trustees have sought to place more emphasis on free community arts events, for example by expanding the EnjoyRubery programme to a full weekend from Friday 22nd June to Sunday 24th June, and by promoting additional Free Bite Sized Classics concerts in Catshill and Rubery. We hope that this will encourage greater participation in festival activities. The programme, which kicks off on the evening of Thursday 21st June with ‘Jazz Sirens’ - a high profile jazz concert at Artrix featuring one of Britain’s finest jazz singers, Jacqui Dankworth (the daughter of Johnny Dankworth and Cleo Lane), and her band - runs for just over four weeks to the final MusicFest gala concert on Sunday, 22nd July given by the Orchestra of St John. During the four week festival period, there is an arts or cultural event on virtually every day at venues right across the Bromsgrove District. These range from theatre productions, both inside and outside, opera, folk and blues concerts as well as a number of classical orchestral and choral performances. There are also dance events, art exhibitions, comedy and the spoken word. Many of these events are designed for children and younger people, with participation encouraged. As last year, there will be a range of free community events on Saturdays on Bromsgrove High Street and New Road Rubery as well as a Summer Jam and skateboarding competition in Rubery Park on the afternoon of Saturday 23rd June. The festival is grateful for financial support from Bromsgrove District Council for these free community events which also include a Day of Dance, Family Fun on the High Street and a Fusion event on Saturday 21st July. The full programme and details of ticket purchase arrangements for each event are available on the Bromsgrove Festival website at www.bromsgrovefestival.co.uk. Alternatively, free programme brochures can be picked up at the Library, community centres, and many churches and shops. The 2018 Bromsgrove Festival will offer another exciting programme. We know that you will find something that you will enjoy and we encourage you to try something new right here on your doorstep in Bromsgrove.

Battlefield Brook Project The first phase of the Sanders Park Battlefield Brook Project is very nearly completed – just in time for the summer! The major improvement works have been carried out and funded by Severn Trent Water, approved by the Environment Agency, to: • • • •
Link up natural habitats Boost biodiversity Improve aesthetic value & water quality Remove the crumbling concrete sections of the old brook course
The works commenced in November 2017 and, although delayed due to heavy rainfall and snow during the winter months, will now be completed in time for both human and animal visitors to enjoy it during the summer months. A second phase of less intrusive work will begin in February 2019. Bromsgrove Business Leaders Discuss Economic Future More than seventy North Worcestershire business leaders recently gathered to look to the economic future of Bromsgrove in the historic setting of Avoncroft Museum of Buildings. The event, organised by NWedR for Bromsgrove District Council, was set up to engage local business leaders in the process of future planning for the economic development of Bromsgrove. Head of NWedR Dean Piper welcomed delegates from a wide range of businesses from across the Bromsgrove area before Councillor Karen May, Deputy Council Leader and Portfolio Holder for Economic Development and Regeneration outlined the ‘state of the area’ in terms of the economy, employment and skills, infrastructure, road and rail connections and stated that Bromsgrove is a great place to do business. She also highlighted challenges to the economic growth and prosperity of Bromsgrove and detailed the challenges for the future which need to be addressed so that future generations can continue to enjoy the benefits of living and working here. A number of speakers representing Bromsgrove businesses had their say on the area, before the floor was opened for questions. The Q&A session for the speaker panel included John Dillon, Managing Director of local commercial property agents GJS Dillon and other business leaders. The panel was facilitated by David Clarke, Chairman of Clarke Associates based in Wythall. Questions from the floor included issues including developing brownfield sites and availability of ‘work ready’ young people. Delegates took the opportunity to network and to find out about business support and advice from Heart of Worcestershire College, Greater Birmingham & Solihull LEP Growth Hub, Business Solutions Centre from University of Wolverhampton and NWedR. For details on the next networking event, please email info@nwedr.org.uk

Have Your Say on the Future Planning of Your District Bromsgrove District Plan Review Issues and Options Consultation The council is reviewing the Bromsgrove District Plan, the long term vision and strategy to meet the future needs for homes and employment across the district. We are at the early stages in preparing this District Plan Review, and consultation is a key part of how we prepare planning policies. It is important that everyone has the opportunity to get involved and have their say in local issues that affect or interest them. The first stage of the consultation will seek your views on the Issues & Options that you feel need addressing for the plan. How to Get Involved Subject to approval by district councillors, the Issues & Options Consultation is expected to take place later this year (2018). We will be running a number of sessions near you for a chance to get involved. To keep updated on our consultation events, please visit www.bromsgrove.gov.uk/districtplan

Rotary Club Donation Repairs Spire The Rotary Club of Bromsgrove have made a charitable donation of £5,000 to pay for the emergency repairs to the spire at St John’s Church in Bromsgrove. After a crack in the stonework at the very top of the spire was discovered by steeplejacks during a routine inspection, it was repaired as a matter of urgency. But when the Rotary Club heard about it they generously donated the funds required for the work, as well as for repairs to the lightning conductor and to carry out a full spire survey. Friends of St John’s Chairman Jo Slade said: “We are extremely grateful to the Rotary Club of Bromsgrove for this generous donation. If you look up to the top of the spire you can see eight steel straps around the top. These have been put in place as a precautionary measure and once the full spire survey is completed we will know what the long term restoration requirement will be.” Rotary Chairman Amal Rampal said: “When we found out about the need at St John’s we didn’t hesitate to give our full support. St John’s is the oldest and possibly most important building in Bromsgrove and the Rotary Club is delighted to be able to help at this time.” Did you know the enamel pin badge worn by the Rotary President, made by Cupitt Jewellers, includes a picture of the church? The Friends of St John’s are passionate about Bromsgrove’s heritage. Through community based events, the friends raise funds for the ongoing maintenance, restoration and improvements at Bromsgrove’s landmark and historic church building.
