This summer edition of Better Bromsgrove Together follows the success of our festive edition which brought all the Christmas events, across the district, into one publication. This summer one is bigger and better and sees lots of support from local businesses that recognise that Bromsgrove is a great place to do business – and visit! In between magazines we have had a lots of events – including our Valentines competition, Better Bromsgrove Love, which saw lots of goodies up for grabs thanks to our local shops, and a youth market which was a real success and showcased our local young talent. But I’ll leave you to find out more about Better Bromsgrove and don’t forget to check out our new website, details below.

Our Better Bromsgrove website has everything you want to know about the district – whether you live or work here or are thinking about moving to the area. Although there is a section on the £100m regeneration of the Town Centre, Better Bromsgrove covers the whole district with a special focus on its seven centres, Alvechurch, Hagley, Wythall, Barnt Green, Rubery, Catshill & Bromsgrove. The aim of Better Bromsgrove is to bring everything about the district under one umbrella so we are networking with local groups, organisations, and businesses to make sure we don’t miss anything out. Of course it’s a never-ending task as new businesses are coming to the district all the time and there are a vast array of events too. But we hope, coupled with this magazine Better Bromsgrove Together we can show off our district which is better than ever. www.betterbromsgrove.com

Hot on the heels of last year’s event, which was hailed a ‘great success’, the 2017 Bromsgrove Festival line-up has been launched.

The Festival has been running across the district for 57 years and for 2017 the programme will focus more on arts and cultural activity and will boast a full range of music, theatre, dance, visual arts and educational activities. The trustees have also placed more emphasis on free community arts activities, for example by introducing new free events such as REFRESHRubery in the village centre and a Bite Sized Classics concert at St Andrew’s Church in Charford. And as always the major part of the Festival programme comprises events that are promoted and organised by local societies, clubs and other organisations whose support is never-waning and extremely valuable. This year’s Festival will be building on the feedback from the 2016 event when an independent survey and impact assessment by Tiller Research showed significant benefits for the Bromsgrove District and increased audience participation. Graham Mackenzie, Chair of Bromsgrove Festival Limited, said: “The 2016 Festival was judged a great success. Feedback from event organisers who saw increased attendances and audience members was almost unanimously positive. "So, despite reduced funding, the Festival Committee has had no hesitation in organising the 2017 Festival in the same wide ranging, high quality community-based style. "We also hope by reaching out across the district we will encourage greater participation in Festival activities in areas of Bromsgrove that have previously not seriously engaged with the Festival.” The Bromsgrove Festival will run this year from Friday 16th June to Sunday July 23rd. The full programme is also available at www.bromsgrovefestival.co.uk and many events will provide for internet booking and ticket purchase.

very edge of Worcestershire, Hagley is an unusually well-connected place that is growing into one of the county’s most in-demand places to live. With Bromsgrove, Stourbridge, Halesowen, Kidderminster and the Merry Hill shopping centre all nearby, and with Birmingham city centre just ten miles away, the roughly 6,000 residents of Hagley are spoiled for choice, but they don’t have to travel far to their own independent local shops and restaurants around Worcester Road. Many people visit Hagley for the events and tours at the iconic Hagley Hall, a Grade I listed home and registered historic park and garden set in about 180 hectares of grounds, and children and their families from miles around come to Hagley’s top schools. Did you know Hornby used the footbridge over the Kidderminster to Birmingham railway line at Hagley as the design for their model railway footbridge? www.betterbromsgrove.com/ centres/hagley

Alvechurch is a quintessentially English

village on the outskirts of Redditch and Birmingham, with deep-running roots that can be traced back to the eighth century. Its shopping centre, which runs along the High Street that used to be the main road between Birmingham and Redditch before modern bypasses were built, remains a focal point for the community catering for the needs of over 6,000 residents. Today Alvechurch is a mixture of old and new with the kind of good road and rail links, good schools, good shops and good pubs that never go out of fashion. Visitors from all across the country also flock to the famous Alvechurch Marina, next to the train station, which is a popular place to hire canal boats on the Worcester and Birmingham canal. It’s an ideal place to start out, especially as it’s just a couple of miles from the famous Tardebigge flight, which is a uniquely challenging run of 30 locks! www.betterbromsgrove.com/centres/ alvechurch

The £100m regeneration of Bromsgrove Town Centre

has provided a new public realm for the High Street and major new retail developments – most recently the opening of Waitrose. A new Health Centre, Library and Police and Fire Station were also exciting developments developed as part of the Bromsgrove Regeneration Programme which saw a mix of public and private investment. The £10million Bromsgrove Railway Station is now up and running and establishments such as NEW College and Bromsgrove School are completing £multi-million extensions, to cope with growing demand. These improvements have seen local businesses and shops come together to continue to build pride in their High Street. They now have the support of Centres Manager Cheryl Welsh who works closely with the group to address any issues, apply for funding, and to give them support for future events. Using her own funding through North Worcestershire Economic Development and Regeneration (NWEDR) Cheryl has seen projects through to fruition including youth markets, the festive extravaganza of 2016 and plans to host skateboarding events and motorcycle displays in the future. Better Bromsgrove is the campaign to bring all these great things together – not only in the town centre, but in the outlying villages. www.betterbromsgrove.com

Continental Collection of Barnt Green

If you’re heading northwards through

Worcestershire, one of the last bastions of the leafy shire before you start to approach the urban powerhouse of greater Birmingham is Barnt Green in Bromsgrove District. 150 years ago there was no Barnt Green to speak of - just a couple of homes and a farm. But once people started wanting to commute by road and rail, its prime location meant it was destined to become a sought-after place to live. Today with its population of under 2,000 Barnt Green shows that some of the best things really do come in small packages. Set in the gateway to the wooded Lickey Hills, and just 10 miles from Birmingham City centre, combined with some beautiful period architecture, the village often tops lists of highest regional property values - over 57% of homes there are detached. Many visitors find the unique shops of the village centre on Hewell Road to be an ideal base for venturing out into the countryside. And did you know that this year Bromsgrove District Council agreed to build the village’s first ever public toilet? Whether it’s excursions into the Lickeys or trips through the rolling countryside where the Birmingham and Worcester canal threads its way past the Bittell reservoirs, you can start and end in Barnt Green. www.betterbromsgrove.com/centres/ barnt-green

Not only does Rubery boast a host of

independent traders in its main street, of course mixed with High Street chains, but its own indoor market Father’s Barn is going from strength to strength.

Although hit by a fire last October, most services including the florist and mobile phones, remain unaffected and in fact a new café has just opened there. Rubery also has an active traders’ association which we work with as a council to promote events and activities – not least the Christmas lights switch-on. It’s not just about shopping or the Longbridge links – the village is located in the valley of the Waseley and Lickey Hills, and within the basin of the Callowbrook and the River Rea so there’s lots to see and do. .

Rubery’s village centre will receive a facelift this summer after funding and a plan for a range of improvements were approved. £100,000 will be invested in improvements to the village’s public realm, including lighting, bus shelters, benches bollards, and other street furniture items. A new ‘quality charter’ for future works will also ensure that improvements made by the district council are permanent. The plan was announced in January following a 2016 audit of Rubery’s public realm. It is coordinated by NWedR (North Worcestershire Economic Development and Regeneration) on behalf of Bromsgrove District Council, which has contributed £75,000 of the funding, and will be carried out by Worcestershire County Council, which has contributed £25,000. www.betterbromsgrove.com/centres/rubery

Wythall is situated in the north east corner

of Worcestershire, within Bromsgrove District. The village shares borders with Solihull and Birmingham. In 1911 two thirds of the ancient parish of Kings Norton was transferred to Birmingham and only Wythall remained in Worcestershire. What is now the Phoenix Group complex was previously RAF Wythall (from 1938-1960) which was a ballon barrage centre that defended Southern Birmingham and Coventry during the Second World War. After the war it became a demob centre for all Women's Auxillary Air Force nationally. Today Wythall is home to a population of over 12,000 residents spread amongst several areas including Majors Green and parts of Walkers Heath. Wythall village itself is generally the area covered by the Wythall South ward. Wythall has its very own Transport Museum, Leisure Centre, famous farm shop and the beautiful Wythall Park which plays host to numerous events throughout the year. www.betterbromsgrove.com/ centres/wythall

Located 2.5 miles north of Bromsgrove Town, Catshill was formed around Turnpike

Road (now the A38) in 1844. Catshill is within commutable distance of both Worcester and Birmingham and as a result the population of the village has grown in recent years. Catshill is now home to three schools, including the outstanding Ofsted rated Chadsgrove Special School which caters for pupils aged 2–19 years from across Worcestershire whose Special Educational Needs arise from physical disability. The village has a small library, though it is not open every day, as well as a village hall in which many different learning activities take place, from karate to IT skills. There is uncertainty as to how Catshill got its name and folklore has it that the area was once the habitat of wild cats – so the name literally means Cats Hill. The earliest documented use of the name dates back to the 13th Century. Catshill is historically famous for nail making, like much of Bromsgrove District which employed thousands of nailers. Catshill village was very much a centre for this trade which continued even after the decline of the nail making era around 1914. The poet Alfred Edward Housman, whose statue can be seen on Bromsgrove High Street, is reported to have lived in Catshill. www.betterbromsgrove.com/centres/catshill

Bromsgrove District Council teamed up

with local businesses to showcase what they could offer shoppers and organised a love-ly giveaway to give romance a helping hand. Traders from the town centre and Bromsgrove’s centres, including Hagley and Barnt Green, donated their wares for lucky lovebirds to enjoy. The campaign aimed to recognise the treasures already in the district as well as encouraging economic growth. The independent traders offered something a little bit different – and are just another reason to Love Bromsgrove! Kind hearted businesses included Artrix, Plaza Café, Decanter Spirit, Hoiti Toiti, Lily Blue, Regency, Casa Med, The Fresh Flower Company, Leigh the Butchers, It’s A Gift, Meadow Farm Butchers, and Vinalia. Pictured – two of our winners with their prizes.

Roll up, roll up! A host of specialist

markets are planned for the High Street and this year the programme kicked off with the first ever Youth Market. The majority of sellers were aged between 15 and 17 and they had a variety of items to offer, including handmade wooden items, such as wine racks and plaques, mugs designed to appeal to young people, funky clocks and crafted candles. The Youth Market was the result of a partnership between the council and Young Enterprise. Keep an eye on betterbromsgrove.com for more market news.
