A message from the Chief Executive
Our Summer edition of Redditch Matters returns and once again is packed with information about events for over the next few months. And, it is now available in a paper version too. We welcome the Tour Series back to Redditch for the 8th time and launch a Royal Enfield Showcase in the town as we forge new links with the bike brand which has its birthplace in the Borough. Dial A Ride, our community bus service which provides a life line to residents who, without it, would not be able to get out and about is celebrating its 30th birthday with a relaunch and we invite you to name our improved fleet. The magazine is also packed with news from the Council about our services and initiatives and of course more information is available on our website, Facebook and Twitter. Kevin Dicks, Chief Executive of Redditch Borough and Bromsgrove District Councils

Tenants Try Tasty Treats Tenants at St David’s House tried new foods and experimented with smoothies as part of national Nutrition and Health Week. A packed programme of activities took place during the week including taking part in the ‘Global Tea Party’. Youngsters from Batchley First School also joined in the fun and put on a concert for the tenants.

Nominated Neighbour Scheme Do you or does anyone you know feel vulnerable in their home? It is an unfortunate fact that certain criminals target the elderly and vulnerable in their homes by posing as genuine callers. They seek to gain access to the house by deception to steal. Others will offer to do works to the house for problems that may not even exist for exorbitant sums and the work proves unnecessary or sub-standard.
The Nominated Neighbour Scheme seeks to protect potential victims by enrolling a willing person who is able to have callers referred to them by the potential victim so their identity can be verified. If you think this may be helpful to you or someone you know, more details can be obtained by contacting Community Safety at Bromsgrove District or Redditch Borough councils on 01527 534187 or CommunitySafety@bromsgroveandredditch.gov.uk John Campion Police and Crime Commissioner West Mercia

District Centres Regeneration Latest If you have been watching the news recently you’ll know that the council currently hopes to form a partnership with a major developer in order to regenerate the Matchborough and Winyates centres, as part of a development that would create new homes in that area. The idea is still in its relatively early stages. The council is currently drawing up its list of requirements for the project, that a potential partner would need to satisfy, and that list is expected to be considered by councillors in June. The draft requirements are currently outlined as: • There would be extensive local public engagement in the development of proposals • The existing centres would be either refurbished or demolished and replaced with either two new centres or one new centre and one new parade or shop • There would be a new health centre and local food retail presence
• No council housing stock would be lost • Bus access would be maintained through the centres during and after redevelopment • There would be continuity for existing community facilities and businesses during the regeneration process • The council’s financial and other interests would be protected
Subject to the council agreeing its requirements, a formal procurement process to find a development partner would begin. That would see expressions of interest invited from members of the ‘Homes England Delivery Partner Panel’, a panel of house builders and construction companies with considerable experience of delivering major housing-led regeneration projects. 4
The council would then give the developer who responds most in line with its requirements the opportunity to join a development partnership, which on current timescales would happen in the spring of 2020. At that point the partnership would then get to work to engage with the community to shape and put together actual redevelopment proposals for the centres. For up to date information on this project as it progresses, keep an eye on your local press and go to www.redditchbc.gov.uk/centres anytime for more info and project updates.

More Affordable Homes Earmarked For Redditch The latest outline planning permission to be granted covers two two-bedroom bungalows in Fladbury Close, three twobed houses in Heronfield Close and five two-bed bungalows in Sandygate Close. During the last financial year the Council has added 20 homes to its stock, spending nearly £2m of funding which has to be invested in providing more housing stock. Government guidelines specify it cannot be spent on anything else and has to be invested in a three year period.

Ticket To Name A Bus! We’ve been inundated with suggestions to name our five-strong fleet of community buses as the Dial A Ride Service enters its 30th year! DAR has recently had an overhaul which will see an improved and more efficient service for the hundreds of residents who, each month, the bus service provides a lifeline to. As well as three new buses, improvements include designated dates and times for shopping trips so more people can travel together. Residents have until May 10 to put forward names for the buses and winning titles will be written on the driver’s door. To take part fill in the form on our website, search Dial A Ride, email DARcompetition @bromsgroveandredditch.gov.uk or post your ideas to DAR, Town Hall, Walter Stranz Square, Redditch, B98 8AH Please note Bussy McBusface will not be included in the shortlist!
Adopt An Area To Be Proud Of Fed up of litter being strewn in your favourite green space, shopping street or pathway? Anyone committed to tackling litter, from residents to schools, charities, community groups or businesses, can be responsible for keeping an area in tip top condition. Under ‘Adopt an Area’ you choose the area you want to ‘adopt’ and register it with the council. You would then receive the guidance, equipment, and collection services for larger quantities of litter and special signs would be put up in your adopted area telling passersby that it has been adopted by local people. To find out more search our website or call our Environmental Services Team on (01527) 881188.

Royal Enfield Showcase
the Past, Present, and Future
For 6 weeks at Redditch, spiritual home of the brand Opening weekend Saturday June 1st, 10.30am Royal Enfield will be making an exclusive European unveiling of a new model to their existing lineup
Kingfisher Shopping Centre, opposite Clintons Every weekend something new to see & hear!
June 1 July 13 14
Royal Enfield’s timeline is scattered with historic happenings from the birth of the legendary Bullet in 1932 to the Thunderbird, a stylish lean burn cruiser being launched in India in 1997. But Redditch was the birthplace of Royal Enfield, even before there were bikes! In 1891 R.W. Smith and Albert Eadie took over the Townsend Cycle Company in Redditch. They started supplying precision machine parts to the Royal Enfield Small Arms Factory in Enfield, Middlesex and were renamed the Enfield Manufacturing Company Limited. In 1893 Enfield Manufacturing Ltd. became Royal Enfield – ‘Royal’ being taken from the Royal Small Arms Company. The famous trademark ‘Made like a gun’ was introduced. Then, in 1898 Smith designed a prototype motorised vehicle, a four wheel bicycle known as a quadricycle using a proprietary 1.5 hp De Dion engine. It was in 1900 that Royal Enfield delved into motorsport when one of its quadricycles entered a 1000 Mile Trial. The event helped to persuade the British public about the viability of motorised transport. These events built up to the infamous date of 1901 when the first Royal Enfield motorcycle was produced. Designed by R. W. Smith and Frenchman Jules Gotiet, it had a 1.5 hp Minerva engine mounted in front of the steering head. The final drive was at the rear wheel by means of a long rawhide belt. After surviving and assisting in two world wars, in 1949 ties with India begin to emerge and in 1955 the Redditch company partnered Madras Motors in India to form ‘Enfield India’ and a purpose-built factory was created.
1967 With only two models left in production at the start of the year – the
250cc Continental GT and the 736cc Interceptor – Royal Enfield’s Redditch facility closes down. Production of the Interceptor continued at Enfield’s underground facility in Bradford on Avon. And now, in 2019, we are proud to be the home of Royal Enfield: celebrating this amazing timeline with a showcase of past, present and future.
