Defending the WAC
As our program begins its fifth season at Boise State University, we are proud of our start
and excited about the future. The 2009-10 season was the best to date, winning the WAC Championships in just our fourth year as a program. As we embark on our fifth year, we have set new goals as a team, and we are challenged and motivated to follow last season with another record-breaking year. Our staff is committed to establishing and ensuring an environment where motivated and talented student-athletes strive for excellence in swimming and diving and in the classroom. We will work together to consistently challenge for WAC Championships and earn representation and points at the NCAA Championships, while striving for even bigger goals of competing at the international level. For the women who have chosen to join our program, we are committed to help them: •Graduate in academic fields they care about •Develop as capable, independent young women who are ready to go out and make a difference in the world. •Achieve their dreams as swimmers, divers and students, and to do so as a team of excellence in all areas. It is a tremendous honor and privilege to compete for and coach at Boise State University. We know this is one of the best places to be a student-athlete and a coach. Join us as we celebrate the triumphs of this season!

Season Outlook
Season Outlook Head Coach Kristin Hill leads the 2010-11 Boise State University women’s swimming and diving team in search of the hard work, dedication and magic that helped the Broncos capture the 2010 Western Athletic Conference Championship in the program’s fourth year of existence. This year’s class of seniors is the first recruiting class in program history, and Hill knows they want to finish what they came here to start- a winning tradition. “Our senior class is a treasure and they have contributed so much over their first three years,” Hill said. “They all feel a sincere commitment to this team and I know that every one of them has the ability to Senior Denise Green returns as the school record-holder in all three backstroke events. make great contributions to the team during McLain, from Pierre, S.D., briefly held the will give Boise State a new strength. Look their final season. Their best swimming in top spot in the 50 back last season before for Hahto to shine in the 100 breast, and their personal careers can certainly come Green reclaimed the record and is sure to Stotts to stand out throughout the season in this season, and we anticipate that for all of challenge for the all-time marks again this the 200 breast. them.” In addition to the seniors, the Broncos year. Combined, the two veterans hold all will also lean heavily on a decorated junior Coach Hill’s Take: “Freshman Chelsea Miller class, a talented bunch of sophomores and 30 of the top-10 times in the backstroke, but is the fastest breastsroker we’ve ever signed. holding on to them will be a challenge with a group of freshmen that is the most highlyShe swims both the 100 and 200 breaststroke, the crop of developing young swimmers and touted recruiting class in school history. and she’s someone that we’re excited to talented transfers in the event. Madison Gray “Everybody wants to repeat as WAC get into our program. We feel like we do a will compete for the Broncos this season really good job with our breaststrokers. To Champions, and that is certainly a goal of ours,” said Hill. “But it won’t be easy. We after sitting out last year as a transfer from build on the times she is coming in at will be have some strong teams in our conference BYU. Kelsy Diener is a transfer from San really exciting; she could really make a big that don’t want to see that happen. New Diego State and will make an immediate impact in our conference. Right behind her impact with Boise State. Mexico State was right behind us, and they will be Forrester. Kelly is a strong 50 and 100 seemed to get stronger as the conference Coach Hill’s Take: “Our standout over the last breaststroker, and she really contributed to meet went on. San Jose State is a team that couple years has been Denise Green. She had our relays last season. Emily Irvin is our top definitely was battling it out, especially on lifetime bests last season, and she did really returner, with school records in the 100 and relays last year. Nevada went into last season well at our conference championships. She 200 breaststroke. Emily is really versatile, so looking for a fourth-consecutive conference is really closely followed by Morgan McLain. in adding Chelsea, it also frees up Emily to championship. So, that is a team that knows Morgan’s level of training is very high, and compete in other events. We have a really they have that kind of potential. It will be my goal for her is to realize her potential this strong crew in this event, which is important fun. We look forward to the competition, and year. Lily Donohue will be a sophomore. Lily as it allows teammates to push each other in certainly won’t take it lightly.” is a good 200 backstroker, but she also had training. Erin Stotts is a senior, and she does Hill and the Broncos are looking to leave a some speed last year she’d never really seen better with a little more distance behind the permanent mark on the WAC before Boise before. Kelsy Diener comes in as a transfer, race. Erin is consistently strong in season, State joins the Mountain West Conference and probably our best 200 backstroker. particularly in dual meets when others next season. Madison Gray is someone who redshirted might not race as well, and we can really “Our goal is always for everybody to have last year, and so she will be a wildcard for rely on her to compete well and contribute best times,” Hill said. “And if that happens us. She trained with us last year, but now throughout the entire season. Our other everything else takes care of itself. There has an opportunity to contribute points for senior breaststroker, Tara Hahto, has a lot is no way for us to get away from the fact us, and she will. Andrea Thiltgen trained of reasons to be at her best this season, and that we want to win the WAC Championship well last spring and focused on strength this I think she will really be a factor for us from again. If everybody does their part, that’s summer, and she will have a chance to gain start to finish.” when those sorts of things happen, and valuable points for us. Diving coach David Legler Junior Emily Irvin returns as the undisputed season, looking to defend her conference looks to improve on what was the best diving leader of the Broncos’ breaststroke title in the 100 butterfly. Hill anticipates four more returners backstroke. Forrester, freshmen will push all of the veterans. to 25 of the 30 spots on the all-time top 10 a senior from Durban, South Africa, emerged Coach Hill’s Take: “Fly is a great event lists in the 50, 100 and 200 backstrokes. This last season after transferring from Oregon for us again this season. Our top 100 flyer season Boise State looks to set the bar even State and redshirting in 2008-09. Season Outlook Championships. She competed at a high level this summer and is prepared to have another excellent year. Christine Raininger won the 200 fly at conference in a team record time as a freshman, and we look for her to build on that. Freshman Rachel Heaney has a lot of versatility, and with her in the mix it gives us even more strength in the 200 fly than we had last season. Rachel also has some speed in the 100 fly, which could allow us to move Amber around even more than we were able to last season. Our sophomore class has a lot of strength in the fly, including Stevie Hughey, Lily Donohue and Shanelle Choi. Stevie is our top sophomore who competes well in both the 50 and 100 fly. She can certainly be a top four finisher in the 100 butterfly at conference. Lily is a strength in both the 100 and 200 butterfly, though she swims the 200 fly more because our team is so deep in the 100 fly. Both Stevie and Lily stayed and trained with us this summer which was great as it allowed us to see more of their strengths and find areas we can continue to work on to help them get faster and take their swimming to the next level. Shanelle has a history of favoring the shorter races, but I really see her coming on in the 200 fly this season if she believes she can do it. Junior Paige LaPorte is a 200 butterflyer, and a change in her training this year is really going to be big for her. Freshman Olivia Harrell is a really strong 100 butterflier, and Brooke Balogh is another freshman with swimming in her blood who we look forward to getting into our training program. We’re really excited to see how they can impact the team with the strong returners we have.”
Freestyle Sprints
Juniors Boucher and Stephanie North were in a class of their own last season in the sprint freestyle events, finishing one-two in both the 50 and 100 at the conference meet. North, a Klamath Falls, Ore., native, will be vying for her third-consecutive individual title in the 100. Boucher, from Keizer, Ore., is looking to climb back atop the podium in the 50 free. The two Oregonians hold all 20 spots on the all-time top 10 lists for the sprint freestyle events. North made her first U.S. Olympic Trial cut this summer in the 50 freestyle, and Boucher was within three
tenths in both of the 50 and 100 freestyle. Aside from the challenge they present each other, a pair of transfers and two underclassmen are ready to add even more strength to the Broncos greatest line of defense, their sprint freestyle crew. Coach Hill’s Take: “Sprint freestyle was definitely a forte of ours last year, led by Stephanie North and Amber Boucher. They go back and forth, typically within fractions of a second in the 50 and 100 freestyle. That is great for us to have a front end and an anchor to every relay with those two. Kelly Forrester will have a good shot at being on both our 200 and 400 freestyle relays. She swims both the 50 and 100 freestyle. Madison Gray definitely falls into the 100 freestyle group, even though she may be best at the longer races. Stevie Hughey was on our top freestyle relay teams (200 and 400) at conference, and I really see her making some huge improvements this year. Olivia Harrell will be a standout in the 100 freestyle. She is one of the fastest incoming freshman we’ve had in the 100 freestyle. Kelsy Diener should be a factor in the 100 freestyle, and could definitely vie for a relay spot. Kim Nelson will be a senior, and I think she will be really motivated to excel during her final year, and I know she would really like to contribute in the 100 freestyle. Fellow senior Jenny Nowatzke is a good 50 and 100 freestyler, and I know she wants to go out on top, so it will be fun to see her work hard to make sure that happens.”
Freestyle Middle Distances
In the middle distances of the freestyle event, Boucher and North are once again at the top of the 200. Gray, from Winnemucca, Nev., will make an immediate impact in the 200 and chase the school record Boucher set at the WAC Championships last season. Jennifer Cahill returns after a freshman season in which she lowered the school record time in the 500 free four times, and also set new standards for herself in the 200 freestyle. Cahill, a native of Wailuku, Hawaii, will be challenged in the 500 by three newcomers as well as returners Green and Irvin. Green, a senior from North Bend, Ore., finished fifth last year in the 500 freestyle at the WAC Championships. Irvin, a Bakersfield, Calif., native, provides the Broncos with versatility,
and is a strong option in the 500 freestyle. Coach Hill’s Take: “Amber Boucher and Stephanie North are our top 200 freestylers. We expect to see quite a few right on their heels this season, including Jenn Cahill, Madison Gray, Olivia Harrell and Kelsy Diener. Our leader in the 500 is sophomore Jenn Cahill, followed closely by senior Denise Green and Junior Emily Irvin. Freshman Olivia Harrell will give us another weapon in the middle distances, and another swimmer to challenge for a relay spot in all three freestyle relays. Freshman Brooke Balogh in the 500 freestyle is someone who will really grow through our program, and we anticipate some great swims this season from Kelsy Diener in both the 200 and 500 freestyle races. She could be one of our top swimmers in both of those events.
Sophomore Jenn Cahill enters the season as the top distance freestyler in Bronco history.
Freestyle Distances
Despite her prowess in the middle distances, Cahill will help the Broncos most in the longer freestyle races. After claiming eight of the top 10 times in school history in the 1,000 as a freshman, Cahill will be challenged by Heaney and senior Rachael Meisner. Cahill will also try to improve on her school record time in the mile, but it will be no easy task with the Broncos’ depth in the event. Coach Hill’s Take: “Jenn Cahill will lead our distance crew. She was phenomenal last year as a freshman, setting school records nearly every time she swam. She will be closely followed by Rachel Heaney who swims the 1,000 freestyle. Rachael Meisner will be one of our top distance freestylers this year, and this being her senior year, I know she really wants to be on top. It will be fun to coach and watch this distance crew train together. All three of them have the outlook that they’re just doing it for the team. Whoever comes out on top will have definitely earned it. Because of our depth in breaststroke this year, also look for junior Emily Irvin in the distance races. She had stood out in the 500 freestyle and we may have her try some of the slightly longer races to see how she can compete.”
Individual Medley
Junior Amber Boucher is the reigning WAC Swimmer of the Year, and holds three individual school records.
2010-11 Boise State
With a slew of returners in the individual medley events, including conference champion Raininger in the 400, this is an area any team will be hard pressed to find points to gain against Boise State. Raininger, from Ajax, Ontario, Canada, will be joined by fellow Canadian Hahto (Victoria, B.C.)

Season Outlook atop the IMs. Seniors Meisner and Andrea Thiltgen, junior Irvin and sophomore Gray provide even more experience to this group. Irvin, who lowered her time in the 200 nearly a full second last season, became the first swimmer in school history to clock a time below 2:05. Raininger joined her at the WAC Championships, and now holds the school record. The Broncos will also look to use the IM events to capitalize on the versatility of many of the freshmen as a way to score points in important meets.
title in the 800 free relay, and added two more (400 medley relay and 400 free relay) before the championships ended. Now with competition heating up within the team, and more swimmers eyeing those coveted relay spots, the times are sure to be lowered. That optimism has Hill thinking sweep. Coach Hill’s Take: “Relays are definitely a strength of ours. We won three of the five relays last year at conference, and of course we will go for all five of them this season. Obviously there will be some tight races, and it’s far from a sure thing, but it’s definitely something we would like to see happen. If we can win four relays at the conference meet this year that would be spectacular, but that goal of five will be something fun to challenge ourselves with throughout the season.”
we don’t get to practice often, but is still something we really focus on. We make it a point to compete in it, and make it a part of our training when possible. Tower is definitely Amanda’s best event. Being a former gymnast, she has real fast muscles that make her a good tower diver. Ciera doesn’t have much platform experience, but that will change. She will be able to transition to platform pretty easily. As Lexi and Tana get more comfortable at the platform they will see their scores rise, and we will definitely benefit from that.”
Springboard Diving Sophomore Christine Raininger is the defending WAC champion in the 400 IM. Coach Hill’s Take: “Christine Raininger was our top IMer last year. She is just really strong all through the strokes. Her backstroke really improved last year, and she made big strides in her breaststroke this summer. I know she has bigger goals than what she did last year, despite winning the WAC championship in the 400 IM. Rachel Heaney swims the 400 IM, and her training from home didn’t include as much IM as her program here, so we look for her to really improve. Madison Gray is really strong in the IM. Madison has a lot of endurance, and I think she’s good at gutting it out. Tara Hahto is strong in both IMs; those are two of her top four events. She wants to be a big contributor as a senior, and I know she has a lot of ability in her to finish her career well. Emily Irvin will compete well in the 200 IM. Emily is very versatile and is strong at all four strokes. Andrea Thiltgen really surprised herself last year with her performance at the end of the season in the 400 IM, and we look to build on that. Olivia Harrell hasn’t done a lot of IM training, but as a freshman I think that will be an event she really excels in. Chelsea Miller will also give everybody a run for their money in both IM races. She comes in as one of the fastest 200 IMers we’ve ever had, and she is joined by transfer Kelsy Diener who has also been at 2:04 in the 200 IM, which gives us so much flexibility. Rachael Meisner is one of our best 400 IMers. She works really hard, and really has a great back half with strong breaststroke and freestyle that help her finish the race stronger than most anyone out there. Freshman Brooke Balogh is another strong IMer and will contribute as often as she has the opportunity to race.”
Relays
As high as the team goals are for this season, in no one area are they higher than in the relays. Coming off a dominating performance at the WAC Championships, Hill and the rest of the coaching staff are raising the bar for the Boise State relay teams this season. The Broncos won their first conference relay

2010-11 Boise State
Legler begins his second year as diving coach at Boise State, and his wealth of knowledge and high-level experience is already paying big dividends. Senior Tana Loan, junior Amanda Burnett and sophomore Lexi Pfeiffer showed great strides in the first full season of diving for each of them. In addition to building the confidence and skills of three former gymnasts on the springboard, Legler will work with freshman Ciera Cortney who brings a vast diving background to the program. Coach Legler’s Take: “Over the summer we really focused on the 3-meter for all of the girls, and getting their degree of difficulty (DD) higher. They all learned at least three new dives at 3-meter. On the 1-meter, we just cleaned things up, because they all already had a pretty good 1-meter list. This year we will definitely be a lot more competitive on 3-meter than we were last year. Our incoming freshman, Ciera, had a great summer of training and qualified for age-group nationals at the 1-meter and 3-meter. She will have a pretty big impact on the team right off the bat. She will definitely be our top springboard diver. Lexi showed the most improvement over the summer, not just learning new dives, but overall turning the corner from being a gymnast to being a diver. She became a lot more confident in her diving. Tana’s 3-meter got a lot better over the summer. She learned nearly a whole new 3-meter list. Her increased DD on 3-meter is really going to help her. She is already a very clean diver. Amanda also really raised her DD in the 3-meter, and that will make her more competitive there, to go along with her tower diving.”
Platform Diving
Burnett, from Glendale, Ariz., looks to take another big step forward in 2010-11 after adapting well to the platform in 2009-10. She became the first Bronco to earn WAC Diver of the Week (Jan. 23-31) and the first Bronco to reach the finals at the conference championships. She recorded an eighthplace finish on the platform to help Boise State to the WAC Championship. Coach Legler’s Take: “Platform is something

In Good Company
Five Bronco swimmers qualified for the 2010 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships. Senior Denise Green, juniors Amber Boucher and Stephanie North, and Freshmen Rachel Heaney and Chelsea Miller became the first Boise State swimmers to qualify for the event. Boucher, Green and Miller took part in the event which featured 30 U.S. Olympians. “They were able to see people who they’ve read about, seen on TV or watched videos of,” said Hill. “So, to be in the same pool as them is a great honor and a great confidence-builder. It’s also great for recruiting. It’s a stepping stone we didn’t have the past couple of years, and it makes a big difference.” Not only was it an unforgettable experience, but one that could make a big difference come the end of this season. “Nationals is big for experience,” Hill said. “If they’ve competed at a meet at that level, when they walk into NCAAs for the first time, they will have already been in an atmosphere close to that.” Three Bronco swimmers have set their sights even higher. This summer, Stephanie North (50 free) and Rachel Heaney (200 fly) each qualified for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials. Christine Raininger is also eyeing international competition as she holds

Pushing Each Other
As the Boise State women’s swimming and diving program continues to grow and improve, the competition between teammates becomes more fierce. There were 11 instances last season a Bronco took over a school record from a teammate. With another talented group of freshmen, and another season of collegiate-level training for the veterans, there are sure to be more intrasquad battles than ever before. Two of the closest races will be in the breaststroke events. “Our team is awesome about keeping healthy competition alive, and it’s pretty neat to watch that kind of thing happen,” Hill said. “We don’t know who will end up on top, but in the breaststroke Chelsea Miller has a good shot at setting school records in the 100 and 200 breaststroke, but Emily won’t let those go down without a fight. Kelly Forrester is right there in the 100 breaststroke, as well as Tara Hahto who has really come along since last fall.” Another tight race will be in the 200 butterfly. Hill also expects more events to go back and forth, but, as was the case last year, those will remain unknown until the competitive juices start flowing. “The 200 butterfly is an event really up for grabs,” Hill said. “Christine Raininger comes back strong as the defending WAC champion, and newcomer Rachel Heaney will be right with her training every day, and pushing each other to be better. That’s the great thing about our program, though, we always have surprises.”
The Broncos welcome the most heralded freshman class to the program for the 2010-11 season. Rachel Heaney (top), Olivia Harrell (middle left), Chelsea Miller (middle right) and Brooke Balogh (bottom) will all be counted on to make a big impact in the pool. group,” said Hill. “Obviously what last year’s class did all season, and especially at the WAC Championships, was special. As a program however, we want to continue to build on that, and this year we have a very powerful freshman class. All the way across the board there is potential for top-eight finishes at conference, as well as our first set of NCAA qualifiers.”
The Schedule
Junior Emily Irvin will be one of many Broncos fighting to keep, and lower, their school record times.
The Young and the Relentless
A big reason for the Broncos’ success as a team last season was the freshmen stepping up at the WAC Championships. Boise State freshmen contributed 273 points at the conference meet. The freshmen of 201011 may not be asked to carry such a heavy load, but the coaching staff will not put it past them. The freshmen will be a big part of the equation to fill the hole left by the 2009-10 seniors. Last year’s graduating class had its hand in 190 points at the WAC Championships, including 175 from Chelsea Lopus. Hill is excited for this year’s class to show everyone its vast potential. “We can expect very big things from this

The Broncos open the 2010-11 season with a home dual meet Oct. 8-9, against Rice at the West YMCA in Boise. From there, the Broncos head to the desert for a pair of dual meets at New Mexico State against the host Aggies and North Texas, Oct. 22-23. The Broncos will be spread across Arizona in November, with the divers competing at the Wildcat Diving Invitational in Tucson, Ariz., Nov. 19-21, while the swimmers travel to Flagstaff for a WAC meet against Northern Arizona, Nov. 20. The fall schedule rounds out at the Missouri Invitational in Columbia, Mo., Dec. 3-5. Boise State will spend the holiday season in Southern California for training and a dual meet against UCLA, Jan. 7. The Broncos will also compete in the San Diego Relays, Jan. 9. The team will gear up for the championship meets with competitions against familiar opponents. Seattle will come to the West YMCA Jan. 14-15, for the Broncos’ second and final home meet of the year. In the following weeks, Boise State will be making a tour of the northwest with a dual meet at
Washington State, Jan. 21, followed by a dual at Idaho, Jan. 22. The head-to-head schedule will wrap up with a pair of duals in the Emerald City where Seattle will host the Broncos and Oregon State. Hill wants to achieve more than just wins against the regional rivals. “One of our goals is to be the number one swimming and diving program in the Northwest,” Hill said,.“And that’s why we have all of the other area teams on our schedule, including Seattle, Oregon State, Washington State, and Idaho. But even more than that, since the inception of our program in 2006, we have always built a schedule that allowed us to swim schools at a higher level than us. Last year we faced Washington State and got our first win against a Pac-10 school. This year we have three Pac-10 schools on our schedule, with UCLA, Washington State and Oregon State. This level of competition makes us better as a team. It’s also important to me to see new teams from different parts of the country, and we’ll travel to Columbia, Mo., again this year for the Missouri Invitational in December which is a great meet with high level competition.” The Broncos will look to defend their conference title at the WAC Championships Feb. 23-26, in San Antonio, Texas. For qualifying Broncos, the Zone Diving Championships will be March 11-13 in Minneapolis, Minn., and the NCAA Championships take place March 17-19 in Austin, Texas.

Big Splash
For the last three seasons, members of the Boise State football team have ditched their helmets and pads, and taken their skills to the diving board to show support for the Bronco swimming and diving team at the squad’s last home meet of the season. The appropriately-named “Big Splash” competition is a fan favorite, and has been broadcast live on KISS FM. The last two years the event expanded to include a relay race, and the Broncos hope to get more teams involved in the future. The only guarantee at Big Splash is an afternoon of fun and surprises. Creativity is also sure to be on display. Joe Bozikovich won the inaugural event with his “Happy Birthday Sushi” dive, only to be outdone the following year by Darren Koontz’ Superman impression.

Kristin Hill
Kristin Hill Head Coach
Fifth Year Puget Sound, 1994 Kristin Hill enters her fifth season at the helm of the Boise State swimming and diving team this fall. She was named the inaugural head coach for women’s swimming and diving at Boise State University when the program was added June 27, 2006. Less than four years later Hill has the Broncos set to defend their Western Athletic Conference championship.
the freshman class contributed to 273 points in helping Boise State capture the team crown.
The 2010 title came on the heels of a sixth-place finish at the 2009 WAC Championships, then a program best. The leap from sixth to first is the second-greatest year-to-year improvement in WAC history. Only Hawaii, which finished eighth in 1998-99 and second in 1999-2000, rose more spots in the final standings from one year to the next. (That same season the WAC went from a 14-team conference to a six-team league in women’s swimming and diving.) The Broncos also became just the sixth different WAC champion in the 20 years the conference has carried the sport, and the quickest to do so from the time of the program’s inception.
During the program’s four seasons, 27 swimmers and divers have been recognized with all-conference academic honors. Academics are heavily emphasized in this program, and the Bronco swimming and diving team recorded a 3.09 cumulative GPA during the 2008-09 school year.
“I am very pleased that Kristin is a Bronco,” said Boise State Athletic Director Gene Bleymaier. “With her expertise and direction, and the athletic department’s commitment to excellence, I know that the program will continue to succeed.”
“Our athletic department at Boise State is led by one of the best athletic directors in the country,” said Hill. “Gene Bleymaier has outstanding vision for our department and every program within it. I was given an amazing opportunity to build a program from scratch, and I would not want to do it anywhere else. Boise is a fantastic city, the campus is beautiful and our family is so excited to be back in the northwest. I was excited to get this program started off on the right foot, and based on feedback from coaches and swimmers in the Northwest and around the country, it is clear that we are headed in the right direction.” Hill is a graduate of the University of Puget Sound and was most recently an assistant coach at nationally-ranked Texas A&M. While working with the Aggies, she worked closely with Olympic swimmers Christine Marshall (USA), Julia Wilkinson (Canada) and Triin Aljand (Estonia). The Broncos have improved by leaps and bounds every season since their inaugural season in 2006-07. After a 2008-09 campaign in which Hill and the Broncos saw school records broken in every event, just three of those marks stood throughout the championship 2009-10 season. The 2008-09 season was a landmark year as Hill guided the Broncos to their first victory over in-state rival Idaho in a dual meet, as well as leapfrogging Idaho at the WAC Championships. Boise State also crowned its first individual conference champion that season. During the 2007-08 season, the Broncos had outstanding improvement from their inaugural season, setting team records in every event and featuring nine finalists at the WAC Championships. The team finished seventh overall, beating San Diego and finishing just 64 points behind Idaho. The team won its first dual meets against Division I schools, beating the Air Force Academy during a road trip to Colorado Springs and San Jose State at home. Hill has proven to be an excellent recruiter as freshmen have played key roles in the yearly improvement at Boise State. In 2008-09 Amber Boucher and Stephanie North landed on the medal podium at the WAC Championships in their first year of collegiate swimming, while North became the Broncos’ first individual conference champion. At the 2010 conference meet,

“Our goal is to graduate all student-athletes who start our program and be sure they leave as responsible, independent young women who are ready to go out and make a difference in our world,” said Hill. “We emphasize teamwork, leadership and personal development every day in our program. We laugh a lot, but we also teach a great deal and hold each team member accountable. These things, along with our intense desire as athletes to work hard, improve and make a mark nationally as a program, will continue to set our team apart.” Hill served as an assistant women’s swimming coach at Texas A&M from 2000-06. In her six seasons at College Station, she worked in all aspects of coaching with the Aggie program, including on-deck coaching in the water, dry-land training, recruiting, program budgeting, administration and coordination of team travel. Hill helped the Aggies to their highest dual-meet ranking (eighth) and an 11th-place finish at the 2006 NCAA Championships. While at Texas A&M she coached 17 All-Americans, nine Academic AllAmericans and one USA Swimming National Champion. Over her six-year tenure at Texas A&M, the Aggie women posted a dual-meet record of 53-18, which marked the best record over a six-year span in school history. Before arriving in College Station, Hill was the head men’s and

Kristin Hill women’s swimming and diving coach at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colo., for three seasons (1997-2000). During the 1999-2000 season, the teams set 22 school records and she coached one honorable mention All-American. In addition to her coaching role, she was also the assistant director of admissions for the university from 1998-2000. Complementing her collegiate coaching experience, she has coached U.S. Olympic Trial qualifiers and Canadian National Team members. Hill also gained international coaching experience in 2005 as she was a member of the Estonian National Team coaching staff at the European Championships in Italy. Hill swam for the University of Puget Sound from 1990-94 where she qualified for the NAIA National Championships all four seasons and was a 25-time NAIA All-American. She was a conference champion in the 50-yard freestyle in 1992, and she placed in the top five at the national championships in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle events all four of her collegiate career. Hill also advanced to nationals as a member of all five relay teams her sophomore, junior and senior years at Puget Sound. In addition, she was an NAIA Academic All-American in 1993 and 1994, and was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi National Honorary Scholastic Fraternity. She graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Puget Sound in 1994. Immediately after graduating, Hill pursued a master’s degree at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs. While attending graduate school, she worked as a graduate research fellow for the International Center for Aquatic Research at the Olympic Training Center. Hill had the opportunity to work with many elite athletes, including the 1996 U.S. Olympic swimming team. From 1994-97, Hill was an age group coach for the Colorado Springs Swim Team. She also coached the Manitou Springs High School swim team in 1996. In 1997 she received her master’s degree in basic science with an emphasis in exercise physiology.

Justin Brosseau Assistant Coach
Third Year Missouri State, 2007 Justin Brosseau enters his third season as assistant women’s swimming and diving coach at Boise State University. Head swimming and diving Coach Kristin Hill hired Brosseau in July of 2008. In just his second year in Boise, Brosseau helped the Broncos claim the program’s first WAC championship. “Justin is an integral part of our coaching staff,” said Hill. “He is a young, talented coach who relates well to the women on our team and also offers a lot of knowledge both in technique and in the most effective training methods. He is positive, hard working, dedicated and organized.”
team, Springfield Aquatics finished no lower than fifth at the Missouri Valley Division I Championships during his tenure. Brosseau began his coaching career with the ASA Aquadogs (formerly Truman Aquatics) USA Swimming team in Kirksville, Mo., serving as head coach and administrator of the program from 2002-05. He received his B.A. in English literature from Missouri State University in 2007.
In his first year, Brosseau helped the Broncos to their best finish at the WAC Championships in the program’s three year history. The Broncos also crowned their first WAC Champion en route to their sixth-place finish. Under Brosseau, the Broncos continued to rewrite the record books and improve immensely. Brosseau joined the Bronco family in 2008 after spending the previous season as a volunteer assistant coach for Drury University under coach Brian Reynolds. While at Drury, the women’s team finished second at the NCAA-II Championships while the men’s team won its fourth-consecutive title. In addition to his responsibilities at Drury, Brosseau served as an assistant coach for Springfield (Mo.) Aquatics since 2005. During his tenure at Springfield, he coached and worked with Missouri Valley LSC Top 8 swimmers, sectional qualifiers, Missouri State high school champions, junior national qualifiers and NCAA Division II national champions. As a
“Justin’s swimming and coaching experiences with national championship programs have been an asset to our team,” added Hill. “He understands our commitment to be a successful and highly-competitive swimming and diving program at the conference and national level, and he is committed to helping our women be at their best outside the pool, in the classroom and beyond. We are blessed to have him as a part of our program.” Competitively, Brosseau was a three-year varsity letterwinner at Truman State University from 2001-04. He achieved several NCAA-II “B” cuts during his career and is still ranked in the Truman swimming all-time top 10 in both the 200 breaststroke and 400 IM. In high school he was a member of the Springfield Aquatics senior team, was multiple event qualifier at the sectional level and a USA Swimming Zone Champion in the 200 breaststroke his junior year. “I am honored to have the opportunity to work with Coach Hill and be a part of creating a tradition of excellence at Boise State,” said Brosseau. “This is a great university in a fantastic city, and the athletic department is very supportive of the program. This team has made great strides, and I am looking forward to helping Boise State swimming develop into a force at the conference and national levels.”

David Legler
David Legler Diving Coach Second Year Indiana, 2009 David Legler joined the Bronco Coaching staff in August 2009 as head diving coach. Legler competed for Indiana University and three-time Olympic diving coach Jeff Huber, widely-regarded as the premiere diving coach in the nation. Legler’s first year on staff saw dramatic improvements in the diving events. “David is one of the finest young men I have ever coached,” said Huber. “He is a class act and you will be very impressed with his work ethic, his attitude and his knowledge. He will be an outstanding mentor for your divers and swimmers. You won’t find a better young coach than David.” Legler helped the Boise State divers realize, and exceed, their potential in 2009-10. The Broncos set a school best in points scored at the WAC Championships to help the team win the program’s first conference title in just its fourth year of existence. Other achievements during Legler’s first season in Boise include: Amanda Burnett becoming the first diver to reach the finals at the WAC Championships where she set a school record in the platform; and Burnett became the first Bronco to earn WAC Diver of the Week (Jan. 23-31). The improvements on the diving board led to a talented recruiting class in Legler’s first full season of attracting new student-athletes to the Boise State program. In 2009, Legler earned his Bachelor of Science degree in business with majors in accounting and entrepreneurship
from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. He was a member of the Alpha Beta Honorary for studentathletes who earn a 3.0-or-better, for dedication and success in balancing academics and athletics (2006, 2007, 2008). While at Indiana he spent five years competing at a national level. Legler had a successful career in the Big Ten that was exemplified not only by his athletic performance, but also by his personal character when he won the Sportsmanship award for the Indiana Swimming and Diving team two years in a row. He was a team captain and mentor during the 200708 season. Legler’s athletic accomplishments included a top-three finish on platform at the Big Ten Championships in 2007 (silver) and 2008 (bronze). The Big Ten Conference is known to be one of the top diving conferences in the nation. Legler was a Zone Qualifier in 2006, 2007 and 2008 and missed qualifying for the NCAA Championships in 2008 by 4/10 of a point. He was a member of the USA Diving Senior National Championship Team in 2008 and was a USA Diving Senior National Qualifier in 2006 and 2008. Legler spent the last four summers as a coach and counselor at the Indiana Diving Academy camp, where he gained valuable coaching experience and honed his skills as a diving instructor. “David has been a valuable asset to our swimming and diving program,” says Head Coach Kristin Hill. “He took a brand new diver, Amanda Burnett, and coached her to a top-eight finish on platform at our conference championships. This was a great accomplishment in his first year as a college coach. David is a great communicator, he thrives on challenging tasks and he’s beyond his years in maturity as a coach and a staff member. In just his first year with our divers he made a significant impact on the quality of our program, and it will be exciting to see him at work again this season with our student-athletes.” Legler grew up in Blue Springs, Mo., where he helped Blue Springs High School win the swimming and diving team state title in 2004. He was also a member of Jayhawk Diving Club out of Lawrence, Kans., and competed in gymnastics for 13 years. “I am very excited to have the opportunity to work with Coach Hill, Coach Brosseau and the diving team,” said Legler. “After reading the job posting I knew it was the place for me and I was ready to put my knowledge of diving to use and develop a nationally-competitive diving team and contribute to the continued success of the swimming program. I am truly honored to work with Boise State University swimming and diving team which has shown so much potential.”

2009-10 Year in Review
2009-10 Review
Broncos Bring Home the Hardware in 2010 It was a year of history. It was another year of records falling. Most importantly, it was a year of championships. The 2009-10 season will forever hold its place in the record books of the Boise State swimming and diving team as the first WAC Championship in program history. The Broncos captured their first WAC title in just their fourth year of existence. “Capturing a WAC title after only four years really exceeded my expectations, and I have high expectations,” said head coach Kristin Hill. “To accomplish that in only our fourth year was extraordinary and it was great to be able to honor the team we have built with the win.” The WAC title was an astonishing achievement that was an appropriate ending to a remarkable year that began Oct. 9, 2009. The Broncos traveled to San Jose, Calif. for the WAC Shootout and showed the conference they were ready to be contenders.
The Broncos went 2-1 on the first day of the WAC Shootout, beating the defending WAC champions, Nevada, and narrowly losing to Hawai’i. However, the Broncos beat out all three teams on the second day of competition to open their season with a 5-1 dual record. The Broncos never looked back from their hot start as they continued to sweep through conference opponents over the next four months. Several Broncos made their debuts during the WAC Shootout, including Jenn Cahill and Christine Raininger. Cahill earned first-place points and broke a school record in the 1000 free, her very first swim as a Bronco. Raininger also recorded first-place points on the second day of competition. Next on the list of Bronco victims was Washington State. The Cougars made the trip to Boise and the Broncos sent them home with a loss. The dual win marked the first time the young program
had ever beaten a Pac-10 team and Stephanie North received the first of the Broncos five WAC Swimmer of the Week honors. “Our dual meet win against Washington State in October was very significant for our program,” said Hill. “It was the first time we defeated a Pac-10 team, and we won by a good margin.” November began with a weekend trip to the state of Utah for a pair of meets hosted by Mountain West rivals. Although the Broncos dropped both duals to the hosts (BYU on Friday and Utah on Saturday), the Broncos turned in some good times in the high altitude meets and came home with three more dual wins. Cahill also surpassed her previously set record in the 1000 free and earned WAC Swimmer of the Week honors for the first time in her young career. The Broncos returned home for a WAC dual with Northern Arizona and proved that their strong
Boise State became just the sixth different WAC champion in the 20 years the conference has carried the sport, and the quickest to do so from the time of the program’s inception.

2009-10 Review showing at the WAC Shootout was no fluke. The Broncos handed the Lumberjacks a 185.5-114.5 loss for the first time in program history as they took first in 10 events in the meet, including a 1-2-3 sweep in the distance events.
record-breaking performances with another school record time in the 1000 free. Amber Boucher’s pair of overall first-place finishes in the meet were just a precursor to the season she would have. The Broncos also visited WAC-
Stephanie North defended her WAC title in the 100 freestyle, and claimed two WAC Swimmer of the Week awards in the 2009-10 season.
“Both of our wins against conference rivals, Northern Arizona and New Mexico State, had a lot of impact,” commented Hill. “We had never beaten either team before this season and those wins had us starting to believe in bigger things.” The next trip on the Broncos’ schedule was to the Missouri Invitational where they took fourth out of eight teams. Bronco swimmers broke five school records during the three-day meet and Stephanie North took home the 100 free title to lead the Broncos. North broke her own record in the 100 free and once again was named the WAC Swimmer of the Week while Cahill broke the school records in the 500 free and the mile. Emily Irvin and Raininger also broke school records in the 200 and 400 IM, respectively. The Broncos kicked off the new year with a trip to San Diego, Calif. The trip began with a tri-meet against Tulane and San Diego State. The Broncos dominated over Tulane but fell short against San Diego State. Cahill continued to turn in

opponent San Diego for a dual meet and handed another rival a conference loss. The Broncos took first in every swimming event except for the 200 back to dominate in the WAC dual and earn yet another conference win. Boucher was one of four Broncos to earn a pair of wins in the dual and was awarded her first WAC Swimmer of the Week honor of the year. Boucher continued to roll through January as she led the Broncos to a decisive victory over Idaho for the second year in-a-row. The Broncos
won 15 of the 16 events in the meet, and the sophomore broke another record in 100 fly to earn her second consecutive WAC Swimmer of the Week honor. Senior Day at the West YMCA kept the Broncos rolling to end their dual season as they dominated New Mexico State for another WAC dual victory. The Broncos won 14 of 16 events in the meet to win 29 of their final 32 events of the season. The Bronco swimmers also strung together an impressive 23event win streak that dated all the way back to the San Diego dual. Amanda Burnett led the divers in the final dual as she swept both diving events and earned the first WAC Diver of the Week honor in school history. After nearly a month of training, the Broncos were ready to take on the WAC at the WAC Championships and believed they could compete for the title. “I would say it wasn’t until the last few weeks before our championships that I realized it was a true possibility to compete for the title,” said Hill. It didn’t take long for this special Bronco team to make history as they dominated in the 800 free relay to win their first conference relay title. It was a momentous achievement that “kept fueling the fire all weekend,” according to Hill. Burnett also became the first diver to final at the championships in

accomplish all this in our fourth year is extraordinary.”
Despite the 800 free relay title, the Broncos sat in third after the first day but quickly took the lead on day two and never looked back. The Broncos set four records and Boucher won her first individual title in the 50 free. The third day produced many similar results as the Broncos padded their team lead. Boucher and Raininger each won an individual event and the Broncos also took first in the 400 medley relay while more school records were set.
“Since I began talking with our first recruiting class (the class that has just completed their junior year), I have said that we will contend for the WAC title in our fifth year, which is their senior year,” added Hill. “To
With the Broncos rising to the top of the WAC after just four years, there is no telling how much success will follow this young program as it continues to grow and excel.
“Going into the last day, there really wasn’t anything that could stop us and that was a great feeling,” said Hill. Boise State continued to dominate on the final day as the Broncos pushed their gold medal total to eight events at the WAC Championships, as well as breaking 15 school records. North repeated as conference champion in the 100 free while Raininger captured her second title of the weekend in the 200 fly, and the Bronco 400 free relay team took first in the event. The Broncos shattered the previous program-best at the WAC Championships with 547 points in the championship meet and capped an extraordinary season. Amber Boucher was named the WAC Swimmer of the Year after taking first in the 50 free and 100 fly, second in the 100 free, and helping
