2010 Season

The Mountain Cove Softball Field was officially christened on Mar. 6, 2009 when the Broncos met Northwest Nazarene in the State of Idaho Invitational. The park was renovated for the inaugural season of Boise State softball by a combined project between Boise State University and the Boise School District. The field was given a new playing suface, a press box, dugouts, batting cages and expanded seating. The stadium now holds approximately 500 fans at capacity and the field measures 200 feet to the outfield fences throughout the playing surface.

The stadium is located about one and a half miles from the Boise State campus at the base of the Boise foothills. The Broncos opened the new stadium with a seven-game win streak within the confines of Mountain Cove, including wins over in-state rivals Northwest Nazarene, College of Idaho and Idaho State. In their first season at the renovated field, the Broncos smashed 18 home runs and hit .292 as a team while holding a 7-9 record. Mountain Cove will host 25 games in 2010, including the Springhill Suites Invitational on Mar. 19-21.

2010 Season Preview

s the days start to get longer, the 2010 softball season quickly approaches. For the Boise State softball team, the 2010 season will be a completely different experience than the inaugural 2009 season. No longer will the Broncos be the mysterious new kids of the Western Athletic Conference. With a year under their belt, the Broncos enter the 2010 season with slightly different mentality. It will still be a very young Bronco team with only three upperclassmen; however, the young program brings a year of experience to the field this spring. That experience has formed expectations for the Broncos and second year head coach Erin Thorpe. “With the experience, the nerves and jitters probably won’t be there as much,” Thorpe said. “But I’m still hoping that we still come out and play like the underdog, and still bring that fire and passion to the game that we saw last year.” While the Broncos exceeded Thorpe’s expectations for their inaugural season (a 22-30 overall record), they still have another mountain to climb this year. Thorpe has constructed a complete Division I schedule this year, which she thinks will be the biggest challenge in her second season. “We definitely kicked it up this year with the schedule,” commented Thorpe. “We are playing 21 games against teams ranked in the nation’s top-100 and a complete DI schedule, which will be a whole new challenge for us this year.” A tougher schedule has stressed the need for mental preparation for the Broncos. Thorpe is confident that the young team can physically compete, and that mental preparation will help them climb to the next level as a program. That will be a challenge that the Broncos will meet and be able to overcome if they stick to their strengths. “Our biggest strength as a team last year was the attitude we brought to our games to compete,” said Thorpe. “We were doing everything

for the first time last year from learning to play together to knowing where to eat on road trips. The best thing about the team was that passion and attitude that we brought to the field. When it comes down to it, that is what is going to keep us in games.” The personnel that buy into this attitude will be the players on the field on opening day. Almost every position on opening day is up for grabs during preseason practice as Thorpe expects a lot of competition for starting spots. “When it comes down to it, we are going to put the best players in a starting spot,” said Thorpe. “Until we find somebody that can absolutely give me a reason to not be taken out of the lineup, everybody is fighting for their spot.” For Thorpe, a hot bat will find its way into the lineup, which is the same philosophy that led the Broncos to a 17-9 record to open their season. Six starters and two pitchers return from the 2009 squad, but most will have to continue to earn their starting spots in this brand new season. With that said, here is a position preview of the 2010 squad:

Pitching Both Allie Crump and Aubray Zell will return to the circle for their sophomore seasons in 2010. Once again, they will split time in a sort of dual ace role for the Broncos. Last season, both pitchers reached milestones as Crump reached the 100-strikeout mark Sophomore Aubray Zell and Zell had 10+ wins, including the first six wins in program history. Thorpe believes that having two aces actually gives the Broncos an advantage as both pitchers bring very different games to the field. “Both Allie and Aubray are equally successful and have very different pitching styles,” said Thorpe. “They will both be a huge asset for us. The Broncos look to improve beyond the unexpected achievments of their inaugural season. versity as a pitching staff will help us handle teams with different offensive styles.” Both pitchers found success over the course of the season although it came at different times. Zell immediately found success as she opened the season at 7-2 on her way to a 13-9 record. Sophomore Allie Crump It took Crump nearly a month to earn her first victory although she later became a dominant force in the circle, tossing the team’s only two shutouts of the year. “When Allie is on she is lights out, but it just took her awhile to get her confidence to where it needed to be,” commented Thorpe. “Aubray came in thinking, ‘I was a good pitcher and I still am,’ which she proved right away.” In addition to the two sophomore veterans, Ashley Collier and Lela Work join the Broncos’ pitching staff as freshmen. Although Crump and Zell are expected to shoulder most of the load, the two freshmen should see some time in the circle. “I have seen some good things from both of them in the fall, and there is always a possibility that either one of them could jump into a significant role.”

Corner Infielders The corner positions of the defense proved to be the cornerstones of the offense last year. Kathy Cox returns for her senior year at third base after being selected to the All-Pacific Region team in 2009. Big things will be expected from the senior in the hot corner after she led the team in nearly every major offensive category during the inaugural season. “We are expecting big things from (Cox) this year,” said Thorpe. “She isn’t really a vocal leader but is more of a leader by example. We really hope that she can get out there and have the best senior season possible and help carry this

Two sophomores will more than likely share time in the other corner at first base. Ashleigh Viers-Gordillo and Christina Capobianco started every game at first base last year, which will more than likely be the case in 2010. Capobianco helped shoulder the load offensively as she also smashed 11 homers and hit .318 on the year while starting in all 52 games. Viers-Gordillo proved to be a solid first baseman as she did not commit an error last season. “Ashleigh and (Capobianco) both have the potential Sophomore Christina Capobianco to be very strong offensively for us, and if their bats keep them in the lineup, we will find a way to keep them both in the lineup,” commented Thorpe. As both sophomores were in the top-5 on the team in batting average, Thorpe will need top find a way to again fit both big bats into the lineup. One of the two talented sophomores will more than likely serve in a DP role while the other will take the defensive duties at first base. Wherever they fit in the lineup, both players will once again be asked to produce big offensive numbers in the middle of the lineup.

Middle Infielders The middle infield may be thin in terms of depth this year for the Broncos, but it is definitely not thin on talent. As 2009 came to a close, Kellie Caplan solidified her spot at shortstop while Kelly Sweeney became the everyday second baseman. Thorpe now sees senior Jessi Hanna in the running for a starting spot after serving mostly in a pinch hitting role in 2009.

After fighting injuries in 2009, Jessi Hanna emerged as legitimate contender for a starting spot during the Broncos’ fall scrimmages. Hanna impressed the coaches with a burst of offensive productivity that will earn her a spot on the lineup card if it carries over into the spring. “Hanna absolutely tore it up for us, offensively, in the fall. She is an aggressive baserunner and may have been our best offensive producer in the fall.” Caplan and Sweeney will not let go of those starting spots easily as they had to work all season to be named starters in 2009. Caplan will more than likely be competing with Hanna at shortstop, but may also move to Sophomore Kelly Sweeney the outfield if both Caplan and Hanna contribute offensively. That leaves Sweeney as the frontrunner at second base, which she can solidify by repeating the clutch at-bats that earned her the starting spot last spring as well as All-Tournament honors at the WAC Tournament in May. “Sweeney proved to be such a clutch at-bat last year, so if she stays that way she will be playing second base.” Expect the competition for these positions to last all year as all three Broncos will be expected to be major contributors in the 2010 season. As with every other position, the “hot bat” will always get the nod for the start, which may lead to different combinations in the middle infield throughout the 2010 season.

Freshmen Holly Bourke, Brittany Barcellos, Jesica Kraft and Ashley Collier will be in the competition for an immediate starting spot in the outfield. There will be no depth issues in the outfield positions. With the team philosophy of playing the “hot hand,” all four freshmen along with multiple returners will probably earn starts in the outfield at different points in the season. Hill enters her senior year with big expectations after a solid 2009 season. Thorpe expects her to step into a leadership role and become a major contributor in the lineup. After spending most of 2009 as a leadoff hitter, the coaches are considering moving Hill down in the lineup to give her more RBI opportunities in the 2010 season. If competition breeds success, then the outfielders will provide big numbers for the Broncos this year. The only question will be: Who is going to emerge as the one to put up those numbers?

Catchers

Just as the outfield, the catching position is wide open for the taking. The Broncos return sophomores Tazz Weathlerly and Maghan Yurek from the 2009 squad that saw limited time behind the plate. Freshman Megan Harvey will also join in the competition Sophomore Maghan Yurek for a starting spot. All three catchers will start spring practice on a level playing field in vying for that starting spot. “Catching is the one position that we haven’t seen somebody emerge as the clear-cut starter. It’s going to come down to who is going to step up this spring and earn that spot.”

Outfield The biggest mystery of 2010 may be who will roam the green pastures of the outfield come opening day. Laeha Hill was third on the team in 2009 with a .298 batting average and will more than likely be the opening day starter in left field. However, Thorpe says that Senior Laeha Hill first month of practice will show who the other two starters will be. “I think we have a ton of potential in the outfield, so the outfield will basically be a toss up,” said

Thorpe. “(Weathlerly) can play the outfield, Caplan is a phenomenal outfielder, and then we have a bunch of freshman that can jump into the outfield right away.”

With the catcher’s spot wide open, all three Broncos could see a significant of time behind the plate. Thorpe’s philosophy may hold truer to this position than any other on the field. A good week of practice at any point in the season may earn that starting spot.

Another issue at this position will be experience as Weatherly and Yurek combined to start just seven games in 2009. All the catchers will have a lot to prove when they report back for spring practice as none have any major college experience behind the plate. Once again, the coaching staff will hope that the competition for the spot will breed success for the starter.

Season Preview

There may not be a better leader by example than the player that led the 2009 squad in batting average (.341), runs (40), RBI (40) and tied for the team lead in home runs (11). Cox also started 50 of the Broncos’ 52 games Senior Kathy Cox last year, serving only as a pinch hitter in two games due to a minor injury.

“We basically have these three middle infielders, and two of the three will be starting in the middle infield,” said Thorpe. “We’ll have to see what they all do over that first month of practice to see who will be starting.”

Erin Thorpe became the first head coach in the history of Boise State softball on Sept. 4, 2007. Upon her acceptance of the position, she was given the responsibility to build the Bronco program from scratch, which she continues to do as the Broncos enter into their second season. In her first season at the helm, Thorpe led the Broncos to a 22-30 overall record for the 2009 season. Thorpe needed only three games to earn her first Division I coaching victory when the Broncos beat Fordham 8-4 in their first weekend of the season. Thorpe also led the Broncos to series sweep of Utah State in their first-ever WAC series. Another milestone came when the Broncos not only made the WAC Tournament, but proceeded to upset San Jose State 8-4 in their first-ever WAC Tournament game before losing to Fresno State and Hawaii. Prior to Boise State, Thorpe was the head softball coach at Whittier College in Whittier, Calif. for five years (2002-2007). In August of 2004, she also became the school’s senior women’s administrator and in January of 2005 she was named assistant athletic director for compliance. Prior to her taking over the head coaching position in August of 2002, Whittier’s softball team had a record of 4-33. In her final season (2006-07) with the Poets, she guided Whittier to an overall record of 23-17, and a 12-12 mark in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to finish fourth. In 2007 Thorpe guided her players to five All-SCIAC honors, the rookie of the year in the conference and two NCAA All-West Region awards. The team finished the season 28th in the nation (NCAA III) for team batting average at .337. Thorpe played intercollegiate softball at the University of California, San Diego where she earned NCAA All-America honors in 2000 as a shortstop. Four times she was named to the NCAA All-West Region team, and in 1997 she also earned NCAA All-West Region tournament honors. She completed her collegiate playing career in 2000 by being named the Female Athlete of the Year at UCSD.

Kloczko played baseball for the University of South Carolina, Spartanburg, earning a scholarship as a pitcher, and for American River Junior College in Sacramento, Calif. He earned a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies with a concentration in physical education from the University of South Carolina Spartanburg (now University of South Carolina Upstate) in 1999. Kloczko and his wife, Tiffany, have two children, Tanner (6) and Tayler (2).

Bronco Coaches

Justin Kloczko enters his second season as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Boise State softball team. Kloczko was hired in 2008 prior to the inaugural season of Boise State softball in 2009. During his first year with the Broncos, Kloczko helped coach the team to a 22-30 record. Last year, the Broncos earned a series of firsts as they won their first game in program history, swept their first-ever WAC series and won their first-ever WAC Tournament game. Prior to Boise State, Kloczko worked as an assistant softball coach at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas from 2001-03, where he worked with catchers and outfielders and served as the program’s recruiting coordinator. He also worked as an assistant softball coach at California University of Pennsylvania from 2000-01, Cal State Fullerton from 1999-2000, and the University of South Carolina, Spartanburg from 1997-99. He has served in a number of head coaching positions for girls’ club softball teams that have competed in regional and national tournaments. Pitching Coach • 2nd season • Oregon State, 2008 Brianne McGowan-Durfee, a two-time All-American pitcher at Oregon State, joined head coach Erin Thorpe as an assistant coach for the Boise State softball team’s inaugural season in 2009 and enters into her second season with the team for the 2010 season. McGowan’s responsibilities on the staff as the second assistant include pitching coach duties and will assist with hitting and fielding, in addition to helping with the day to day operations of the program. Under the guidance of McGowan-Durfee, a young Broncos’ pitching staff posted a 4.53 team ERA. As a team, the Broncos posted two shutouts and recorded 221 strikeouts. In her first season, McGowan-Durfee coached two freshman pitchers to milestones as Allie Crump recorded a 100-strikeout season and Aubray Zell reached double digits in victories. McGowan, who graduated from OSU in 2008 with a

degree in health and human science, competed for the Beavers from 2003-07. Her best season was in 2005 when she earned first-team All-America honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and was named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year with a 36-10 record and a 1.80 earnedrun average. That year she broke six different Oregon State single-season pitching records: wins (36), strikeouts (346), complete-game shutouts (12), complete games (34), appearances (54), and innings pitched (299.2). In 2006 McGowan posted a 29-9 record and a 1.36 ERA for OSU and received third-team All-America recognition from the NFCA. She was also a member of the United States team that won a gold medal at the 2007 World University Games and a member of the 2004 USA Junior Olympic Team. Before she joined Boise State, McGowan was an undergraduate assistant with the Oregon State softball program during the 2008 season, working primarily with the pitchers.

2009 Review

2009 INAUGURAL SEASON REVIEW The Boise State softball team was one of the youngest teams in the nation, had no players with Division I softball experience and didn’t quite know what to expect as it entered its inaugural season. It’s safe to say that no one expected the success that would unfold over the rest of the season, especially in the first two months. The Broncos ended the year at 22-30 and 4-16 in Western Athletic Conference games, which earned them the seventh and final spot in the WAC Tournament. While the Broncos were picked eighth in the preseason poll (only the top seven teams made the tournament), they ousted everyone’s expectations by beating out Utah State for the final seed. It was a long road to that tournament berth in May that started in Cathedral City, Calif., where the Broncos played their first game in program history. The Fighting Illini of Illinois were the upstart program’s first opponent in the Cathedral City Kickoff on Feb. 6. With the Broncos at the plate to begin the game, Laeha Hill bounced a pitch up the middle to record the first hit in program history. A sacrifice bunt would move Hill to second, but an error would allow Kelsey Perkins to reach first safely. Just as the Broncos were exceeding expectations with their first batter reaching scoring position, nobody expected what would come next. The Illini turned a rare triple play to end the inning unscathed. The Broncos would play the Illini tough for the first two innings, but the Illini put up four runs in the third as well as two more in the fourth and sixth innings to secure the victory. Laurel Wyatt would not let the Broncos go quietly as she launched a pitch to deep right center for the program’s first ever runs and first-ever home run, making

Later that night the Broncos were runruled by James Madison and woke up to rain the next day. After a long delay, the Broncos took the field against Fordham in a late night matchup. Aubray Zell went the distance and Kathy Cox went deep for her first time as a Bronco to lead the Broncos to an 8-4 win and their first victory in program history. The winning continued into the next day as the Broncos took down Wisconsin in a 13-12 slugfest, improving their record to 2-2. Zell quickly emerged as the Broncos’ go-to pitcher early in the season as she collected both wins on the opening weekend. Zell went on to collect the Broncos’ first seven wins in the circle and led the team with a 13-9 record on the year. She recorded 65 strikeouts and had an ERA of 4.24 while starting 23 games and tossing 133.2 innings, which also led the young pitching staff. The next weekend was off for the Broncos, but they would earn their first winning streak with a 5-3 upset over Long Beach State, who began the year in the top-25 polls. However, the Broncos struggled for the rest of the month, going 2-5 until their home-opener on Mar. 6. March was, by far, the most successful month of the year as the young Broncos improved their record to 17-9 by Mar. 23. The new Mountain Cove Softball Field tuned into home sweet home as the Broncos took their home-opener and won their first seven games in their new park. Christina Capobianco thoroughly enjoyed the friendly confines of Mountain Cove as she hit .909 on the weekend with five homers, including the first round-tripper at the new park. For her efforts, Capobianco became the only Bronco to be named

The Broncos seven-game streak started with the State of Idaho Tournament and a win over Northwest Nazarene to christen the new ballpark on Mar 6. The next day, the Broncos downed the Crusaders again before launching three homers against Idaho State to take their third straight game. Over 400 fans were in attendance as the first-pitch ceremony at Mountain Cove took place prior to the Idaho State game. The Broncos rounded out the tournament by edging out a 4-3 victory over the College of Idaho to keep the winning streak alive. The magic at Mountain Cove continued to shine as the Broncos swept a doubleheader against Utah Valley the next weekend. On Mar. 23, the Broncos and Wolverines split a doubleheader to make the season series 3-1 in favor of the Broncos. The Bengals made their second trip to Mountain Cove on Mar. 15 and ended the Broncos winning streak at seven. After the Broncos took the first game, the Bengals handed the Blue and Orange their first home loss of the season, which is the first of a current nine-game skid on their home turf. The Broncos took a spring break trip over the next week to the state of Utah where they played eight games in seven days. The trip began with a split against Utah in a doubleheader on Mar. 18. On Mar. 20, the Broncos opened the WAC season in the first of a three-game series at Utah State. The first-year magic sparked once again as the Broncos swept through the

Magical March would eventually come to an end as the Broncos split a doubleheader with Utah Valley and dropped a game at BYU to end the spring break trip. The month ended back at Mountain Cove where the Broncos couldn’t find the spark that lifted them earlier in the month, dropping two games to WAC-rival Louisiana Tech. The Broncos ended the month at 17-13 overall and had a 12-6 record in March. Although the Broncos cruised to a sweep in their first-ever WAC series, they soon found out that WAC softball is anything but a breeze. After dropping two to Louisiana Tech, the Broncos got their only other WAC win in the middle game of a threegame series at San Jose State. The Spartans went on to win the rubber game and take the series 2-1. Nevada made their first visit to Mountain Cove as the No. 23 team in the nation and rolled through the first-year Broncos. The Broncos scored only one run in the three-game series and fell victim to a no-hitter. The perfect 3-0 WAC record had turned into a 4-7 record with Utah State threatening to overtake the Broncos. The Broncos traveled to Las Cruces, N.M. to take on New Mexico State, looking to rebound from the Nevada series. The Broncos looked revived and battled hard in all three games but ended on the losing side of a three-game sweep. On Mar. 21, the Broncos took a break from the WAC and made their first trip to Pocatello to take on in-state rival Idaho State, who had won the last matchup between the Gem State rivals. However, the Broncos got back on the winning track and Allie Crump hit a milestone as she became the first Bronco pitcher to hit 100 strikeouts. The Broncos took both games of the doubleheader to take the season series 4-1 over the Bengals. Crump ended the year with a team-leading 112 strikeouts. She posted a 7-14 record in 21 starts. She was also the only Bronco pitcher to toss a shutout, which she did twice in 2009. The hard-throwing freshman tossed 127.2 innings and held a 5.04 ERA.

The Broncos tried to use the momentum from the Idaho State series to pull off an upset over Fresno State. The Bulldogs took the first game easily, but the Broncos applied the pressure on Saturday’s doubleheader. The Broncos jumped out to 5-0 lead in the first inning, but couldn’t hold off a methodical Bulldog comeback. Fresno State took the game 10-9. The story reversed in the third game as the Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead. However, the Broncos mounted a furious comeback with four runs in the seventh to tie the game at 8-8. Kelly Sweeney, who caught fire late in the year, stroked a two-RBI triple down the right field line to bring the Broncos within one run. The Bulldogs scored three runs in the eighth to put the Broncos away and take the sweep. The Broncos regular season ended on the islands of Hawaii with the Broncos needing only one more win or two Utah State losses to clinch a spot in the WAC Tournament. The Broncos struggled in the three-game series as they were no-hit in the first game of the series and eventually swept. However, Utah State was swept in its final series to give the Broncos a berth in the WAC Tournament. The seventhseeded Broncos drew the sixthseeded Spartans in the first game of the tournament. The game turned into a nine-inning seesaw battle with the Broncos emerging victorious in their first-ever WAC Tournament game. Sweeney once again came through in the clutch as she collected RBI in three separate at bats, each of which gave the Broncos a lead. Her biggest hit came in the ninth with the bases loaded. She smashed a single into right field that was misplayed and allowed all three runs to score. The Broncos shut down the Spartans in the bottom half of the inning for an 8-4 win. Back-to-back losses to Fresno State and Hawaii bounced the Broncos from the tournament although the Broncos hung tough in a 4-0 loss to the eventual champion Bulldogs. three-game series, giving them a perfect 3-0 record after their first weekend in the WAC. The sweep proved later to be essential in the Broncos earning a berth in the WAC Tournament.

formance in the tournament-opener with a spot on the All-Tournament team, earning the Broncos first postseason award. Sweeney had emerged late in the season as the Broncos everyday second baseman as she caught fire at the plate. She was second on the team with a .300 batting average in conference play and racked up eight RBI with two homers, which also tied for second on the team. The freshman was also the only Bronco to hit a triple, collecting a pair of triples over the season. Sweeney was second only to Cox, who snagged another postseason award for the Broncos. Cox was named to the NFCA All-Pacific Region team after leading the Broncos’ offensive charge. Cox led the team with a .341 batting average, 11 homers, 40 runs scored and 40 RBI. On top of her production, she was also the toughest strikeout on the team with only 12 strikeouts on the year. Only Capobianco was close in offensive production as she tied Cox with 11 homers, but fell short in the RBI category with 37. With freshman usually filling seven spots on the lineup card in the program’s inaugural season, it’s safe to say that the Broncos exceeded the expectations of Bronco Nation. Both Cox and Sweeney as well as nine other members of the inaugural squad return for the 2010 campaign as the Broncos look to improve upon the immediate success of 2009 and continue to build the young program.

Bronco Stadium, Stueckle sky center & Ed Jacoby Track

In an effort to continue the climb in competition, Boise State has outlined a plan to improve the infrastructure and financial position of its athletic department. The project is called the “Initiative for Athletic Excellence.” It is a detailed plan that lays out the direction for the department and its facilities to ensure the Broncos’ continued growth and success.

Caven-Williams sports complex

In the last 11 years Boise State’s growth has led to the addition of women’s soccer in 1998. In 2006-07 women’s swimming & diving joined the family followed by softball in 2008-09. In recent years Boise State has built four competition facilities: the stateof-the-art Appleton Outdoor Tennis Center (2002), the Bronco Soccer and Tennis Complex (2003), Jacksons Indoor Track (2003 - a joint effort with the city of Nampa) and the Mountain Cove Softball Complex (2008). In January of 2006 the CavenWilliams Sports Complex, a 97,000 square-foot indoor practice facility, was opened next to Bronco Stadium. The Boas Indoor Tennis Center also underwent significant renovation with the replacement of the bubbles. The latest project is the Stueckle Sky Center expansion to Bronco Stadium. The stadium project includes a new press box, luxury suites, banquet hall, new ticket office, a Bronco Shop, and much more. Seating capacity for football games will increase to approximately 32,000. Other future projects include a new 10,000-square foot locker room facility and lounges for the men's and women's basketball teams; a new outdoor track stadium and practice area; a new Peterson PRECO Learning Center; a new home for the World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame; and new women’s sports facilities, including competition venues for softball.

CONFERENCE Affiliations The Western Athletic Conference... In its 47th year, the Western Athletic Conference continues to evolve and features some of the nation’s best intercollegiate competition. One thing that remains unchanged is the persistent nature of the nine schools in the WAC to advance their programs to contend at the top levels of the NCAA. The WAC provides its student-athletes the chance to travel to scenic destinations and gain exposure in some of the nation’s most diverse markets. In addition, the WAC’s studentathletes work to achieve the highest levels of success with the academic support of their respective institutions. The WAC has experienced tremendous success. Over the past six years, it has won 54.5 percent of its bowl games, the third best winning percentage of any conference in the nation. In the past six seasons, the WAC has sent a total of 22 teams to bowl games (12-10). Boise State has won 76 games since joining the conference, the most in the nation during that time span (2001-07). For the second year in a row, the WAC sent a team to a BCS bowl game as Hawai‘i earned a Nokia Sugar Bowl bid this past season following Boise State’s unforgettable victory in the 2007 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. In men’s basketball, the WAC has sent at least two teams to the NCAA Tournament in 23 of the past 25 seasons. Every current school in the WAC has competed in the NCAA Tournament since 1990. In women’s sports, Fresno State softball has competed in every NCAA Tournament ever held while Louisiana Tech basketball has played in all but two.

The WAC is the sixth oldest among the nation’s 11 Division I-A conferences. Its history traces back to July 27, 1962, when the original six-team league of Arizona, Arizona State, Brigham Young, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming began competition. Before 1990, the WAC sponsored championships only in men’s sports. However, a merger with the High Country Athletic Conference formed a single conference under one administrative structure, and the 1990-91 athletic year was the first in which both men and women competed under the WAC name. Currently the WAC membership consists of Hawai’i which joined in 1979, Fresno State (1992), San Jose State (1996), Nevada (2000), Boise State and Louisiana Tech (2001), and Idaho, New Mexico State and Utah State (2005). Presently, the WAC crowns team and individual champions in 19 sports – eight men’s and 11 women’s. For the men, there are championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field. Championships for women are held in basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and volleyball. The WAC office has been located in the Denver area since the conference’s inception with the exception of a two-year stay in Phoenix from 1964-66.

CONFERENCE Affiliations Karl Benson

WAC Commissioner Alma Mater: Boise State When Karl Benson was named the fifth commissioner in the history of the Western Athletic Conference on April 20, 1994, he brought with him a wealth of experience and a personal history of success to the position. Since that time, Benson not only has laid a strong foundation for the WAC’s future, he also steered the conference through unsettled times during the late 1990s and again a few years later when the defection of member institutions threatened the WAC. Through his leadership and vision, it didn’t take long for the WAC to regain its place among the nation’s top Division I conferences. Benson has spearheaded conference expansion with the additions of Nevada, Boise State and Louisiana Tech earlier this decade and an additional round of expansion with New Mexico State, Utah State and Idaho joining the league a few years ago. Nationally, Benson has earned the respect of his peers after serving on the NCAA Management Council from 1999-2002, and a five-year term on the NCAA Men’s Basketball Committee from 2002-06. Benson hit the ground running when he was hired in 1994 and initiated several programs that improved the conference’s national position in virtually ever category. He was instrumental in developing multi-year agreements with the Holiday Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Copper Bowl, Las Vegas Bowl, Silicon Valley Football Classic, GMAC Bowl and currently, the Roady’s Humanitarian Bowl, Sheraton Hawai‘i Bowl and New Mexico Bowl. In 1995-96, the WAC signed an exclusive multi-year agreement with ESPN for the unprecedented live telecasts of basketball and football. Included in that deal was a women’s basketball contract, the first in conference history. Currently, a second agreement with ESPN

and ABC has resulted in 80 football games being televised over the past five years. Benson came to the WAC after four successful years as the commissioner of the Mid-American Conference. There, he implemented several innovative projects and was instrumental in the formation of the Las Vegas Bowl. Prior to taking the reins of the MAC, Benson served on the NCAA staff for more than four years where he was the director of NCAA championships. Benson joined the NCAA staff in January of 1986 as a compliance representative and was appointed assistant director of championships in June 1987. He was promoted to director of championships in 1988. In that position, Benson actively supervised eight assistant directors in their administration of 68 NCAA championships. A native of the state of Washington, Benson graduated from high school in Pullman in 1970, attended Spokane Falls Community College and then received a bachelor of science degree in physical education from Boise State University in 1975. He has also completed coursework toward his master’s degree in athletics administration at the University of Utah. Benson played baseball at both Spokane Falls Community College and Boise State University before serving as the baseball coach at Fort Steilacoom Community College in Tacoma, Wash., for eight years and as the director of athletics at Fort Steilacoom from 1979-84. From 1984-86, he was an assistant baseball coach and an administrative assistant in the athletic department at Utah. He received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Boise State in April of 2006. Benson was born on December 1, 1951 and has one daughter, Jessie, 17.

Strength AND Conditioning

Coach Socha’s Philosophy Head strength and conditioning coach Tim Socha’s philosophy is that student-athletes are not only going to train hard, but that they are going to do the correct exercises that help them excel in their sport. The staff uses variation in the training programs to enhance the student-athletes’ ability to adapt and improve. The variation involves both multi-joint and multi-plane training. Flexibility, core strength and proprioceptive training also is included in all programs. Through all of the training, sport specificity is emphasized, and the one thing that will never be forgotten is that hard work is what wins championships. All 19 Boise State varsity athletic teams utilize the strength and conditioning center. Each team has a sport-specific program designed to help each student-athlete increase his or her athletic potential and decrease the chance of injury. Boise State coaches take pride in the fact that their student-athletes are some of the best conditioned in the nation. The facility is fully equipped with many different machines, as well as various free weight equipment.

Athletic Training Facilities Boise State student-athletes receive top-quality care under the direction of five full-time certified athletic trainers and six graduate assistant athletic trainers who are also certified. In addition, there is a large number of student trainers serving all of the Broncos’ sports medicine needs. Boise State has three fully equipped training rooms at Bronco Stadium, the Boas Tennis and Soccer Complex, and at Taco Bell Arena for the convenience of its student-athletes.

Idaho sports medicine institute Our teams’ doctors are conveniently located on the university campus. The Idaho Sports Medicine Institute (ISMI), established in 1979, is part of the Bronco Stadium complex. The ISMI staff is comprised of board-certified and fellowship trained orthopedic surgeons and family medicine physicians specializing in sports medicine, athletic trainers, physical therapists and an exercise physiologist. Drs. George Wade, Scot Scheffel, Michael Gustavel, Jennifer Miller, Patrick Dawson and Tamara Simpson along with their staff provide specialized care to patients with active lifestyles. Academic Services Academic Support Services Boise State University and the department of athletics are committed to supporting Bronco student-athletes’ pursuit of excellence on and off the field of competition. The Bronco Academic Support Program helps all studentathletes take advantage of the many personal and educational opportunities available at Boise State. The Bronco academic support staff works closely with student-athletes, coaches and the university community to meet the unique educational and personal needs of student-athletes competing at the highest level of college athletics. The academic support staff offers general academic counseling to all student-athletes and works on monitoring NCAA, WAC and Boise State academic requirements. In addition, they work with the many university academic resources to implement a wide range of academic support programs to meet the challenge of balancing athletic and academic commitments. The heart of the Academic Support Program is the Peterson-PRECO Learning Center. Conveniently located on the south side of Taco Bell Arena, this 6,000 square-foot academic facility for student-athletes houses a supervised 24-computer lab, tutorial study rooms, four academic counselors’ offices, two large study areas as well as individual and small group study rooms.

Bronco Life Boise State athletics has more to brag about than its accomplishments on the field, in the gym, or on the court these days! The purpose of the BroncoLIFE program is to provide opportunities that will encourage personal investment and enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience at Boise State University. The 2007-2008 academic year exemplified the commitment of student-athletes in each of these areas: Academic Excellence ● Highest cumulative athletic department GPA on record ● Athletic department had three straight semesters of 3.0 + GPA ● Top APR in WAC - men’s basketball, football, men's tennis, outdoor men's track and field and men's cross country ● 136 Broncos on the conference All-Academic Teams Athletic Excellence ● Wrestling Pac-10 champions ● Football WAC champions ● Men’s Tennis WAC champions ● Gymnastics WAC champions ● Men’s track & field indoor WAC champions ● 11 teams participated in postseason competition Personal Development ● Each team selects two members to serve on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) to discuss topics related to the student-athlete experience and plan large department events. ● Campus and community consultants met with many teams and individuals regarding nutrition, safety, sport psychology, and many other topics. Career Development ● Student-athletes nearing graduation received valuable information and individual assistance regarding resume preparation, interview skills, and graduate school planning. ● In collaboration with local and national companies and the Boise State University Career Center student-athletes attended dinner etiquette training and a variety of company presentations. Community Service ● Student-athletes volunteered over 1,500 hours to the community ● Events included: Read Across America at local schools, Lift Up America, Make-A-Wish Serving Up Wishes, and Jump Rope for Heart

university President Dr. Robert W. Kustra, Boise State President His administration has been marked by an emphasis on research, upgrading admissions standards, improving the undergraduate experience, and increasing the number of graduate and doctoral programs. Faculty awards and grants for research at Boise State have increased from $19.6 million to $37 million during his tenure. Significant scholarship opportunities have been created, including the Langroise National Merit Scholars, Boise State Capital Scholars and Presidential Civic Leadership Scholars.

Dr. Robert Kustra is president of Boise State University, the largest public university in Idaho, with an enrollment of nearly 20,000 students plus 2,400 faculty and staff. Now in his seventh year, he leads the university in a time of dynamic growth in student enrollment, new construction, fundraising, and research. Long heralded for its devotion to classroom teaching, Boise State has added another dimension to its mission as an emerging metropolitan research university of distinction.

Dr. Kustra is currently leading Boise State’s first comprehensive campaign, Destination Distinction, to raise $175 million in private support for faculty, student scholarships, and campus infrastructure. With a long and distinguished career in public service in Illinois, Dr. Kustra served two terms as lieutenant governor of Illinois, following 10 years in the Illinois Legislature. He also chaired the Illinois Board of Higher Education, responsible for funding and oversight of Illinois’ nine public universities. Prior to joining Boise State, Dr. Kustra also served as president of Eastern

Kentucky University and the Midwestern Higher Education Commission. He has held faculty positions at the University of IllinoisSpringfield, Loyola University of Chicago, the University of Illinois-Chicago, and Northwestern University. Dr. Kustra was appointed in 2008 to the NCAA’s highest governing body as a member of the Division I executive committee and board of directors. He served on the Presidential Task Force on the Future of Intercollegiate Athletics and is past president of the Western Athletic Conference’s Board of Directors. He also serves on the board of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education. In 2007, he was inducted into the Idaho Hall of Fame and was named the Most Influential Person in the Treasure Valley by The Idaho Statesman. Dr. Kustra hosts a weekly radio show, New Horizons, for the National Public Radio affiliate in Boise. President Kustra holds degrees from Benedictine College and Southern Illinois University, and a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Illinois, UrbanaChampaign. He and his wife, Kathy, have two grown children, three grandsons, and treasure the memory of their son, Steve.

Under Gene Bleymaier’s leadership, Boise State University’s Department of Athletics has scaled impressive and unprecedented heights with the accomplishments of its student-athletes, the successes of its teams, the growth of its facilities, the support of its community, and the advancement of its status among the nation’s premier athletic programs. Bleymaier is in his 29th year at Boise State. He joined the Athletic Department in 1981 and became the Broncos’ AD in February of 1982. In June 2008 Bleymaier received the Astro Turf Athletic Director of the Year Award at the national athletic directors’ conference in Dallas. He currently is the Western Athletic Conference’s representative to the Bowl Championship Series. In 1997 Bleymaier led the effort to create the Humanitarian Bowl – now called the Roady’s Humanitarian Bowl – and he continues to serve on the board of directors for the annual postseason football game. He served a four-year term as the WAC representative on the NCAA Division I Management Council and is also past president and vice president of the NCAA I-AA Athletic Directors’ Association. He is also a member of the Boise-based World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame board of directors. Under Bleymaier’s guidance, Boise State’s football program has grown spectacularly and gained national attention since it joined the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly I-A) ranks in 1996. In just over a decade competing at the highest collegiate level, Boise State football has put itself on the national map with winning records, league championships, national rankings and bowl victories in front of a national audience. Among the nation’s FBS programs, Boise State has the best overall record in the last 10 years (108-20, 84.3 percent), the best winning percentage for conference games the past 10 years (70-5, 93.3 percent), and has been the highest-scoring team in the nation since 2000 (41.16 points per game). In 1986 Bleymaier was responsible for the installation of the artificial blue turf in Bronco

Stadium, which has become one of the most recognizable sports venues in America and the city of Boise’s most famous landmark. In 1996 he led Boise State’s move to FBS as a member of the Big West Conference, and in 2001 he guided the Bronco Athletic Department’s transfer to its current membership in the WAC. In its first eight years in the WAC, the Bronco football team has won six league championships and finished second twice. In 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2008 Boise State went 8-0 in conference play. The Broncos have won a total of 23 league championships in all sports since joining the WAC. Prior to joining the WAC, Boise State won 15 team titles overall while it was a member of the Big West Conference from 1996-2001, and 33 overall league championships in the Big Sky Conference from 1982-1995. The Broncos also captured 13 Big Sky all-sport championships. Boise State sponsors 19 intercollegiate sports – eight for men and 11 for women. All teams compete in the WAC with the exception of wrestling (Pac-10). The 2008-09 athletic season was highlighted by six teams completing their seasons ranked in the top 25 of their respective sports and Boise State finishing the year with its highest ever finish in the Learfield Sports Director’s Cup at 49th. Football led the way capturing its sixth WAC title in seven years and finished the season ranked 11th in the nation by the Associated Press with an overall record of 12-1. Wrestling won its second straight Pac-10 championship before placing 12th at the NCAA National Championships. The Broncos won their other WAC team titles in men’s indoor track and field, gymnastics and men’s tennis (regular season). Boise State also sent several other teams to regional and national post-season competition highlighted by the men’s tennis team advancing to the round of 16 at the NCAA National Tournament for the first time in over 10 years. Individually, another chapter was added to the Bronco history book when Eleni Kafourou became the first female to win a national championship when she finished first in the women’s triple jump at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. Conference wise Boise State student-athletes won 23 league championships. Behind Bleymaier’s guidance, Boise State student-athletes have also excelled in the classroom. During the 2008-09 academic year, 136 Bronco student-athletes received conference all-academic honors. Following the spring 2009 semester, Bronco studentathletes set an all-time single semester gradepoint-average mark at 3.00 and an all-time cumulative GPA at 3.04, marking the fourth straight semester the Boise State studentathlete cumulative GPA has been over 3.00. A record 65 percent of all student-athletes earned a 3.0 or better GPA last year.

In May of 2009, the NCAA announced its multi-year academic performance rates (APR) and Boise State has the highest rates in the WAC for the sports of football, men’s basketball, men’s tennis (a perfect 1000 score), outdoor track and field, and men’s cross country – the most No. 1 rankings of any WAC school. The football and men’s basketball teams led the WAC for the third straight year. Moreover, the athletic program’s overall APR has improved every year. While Boise State has enjoyed unprecedented success on the playing fields, courts and in the classroom, it has also drastically improved its facilities under Bleymaier’s direction. In August of 2008 the most expensive capital project in the history of Bronco athletics opened with the $36 million Stueckle Sky Center which includes a state-of-the-art press box, suites, loge boxes and club seats. On August 1, 2009 Boise State officially acquired control of the 15.5-acre East Junior High School site from the Boise School District with plans to build future athletic facilities there. Located just northeast of the main campus, the first project planned will be to move Ed Jacoby Track from Bronco Stadium and build a new track and field facility. The most recent facility was unveiled this past year with the opening of the Mountain Cove Softball Field. In a cooperative effort with the Boise School District, the Bronco athletic department renovated the complex adding a press box, more seating, a scoreboard, batting cages and replacing the field. In 2006, Boise State opened the CavenWilliams Sports Complex, which is a $9.5 million indoor practice facility that includes a full size football field and the Keith and Catherine Stein Band Hall. Other capital projects completed during Bleymaier’s tenure include the Boas Tennis/ Soccer Center, a 1997 expansion of Bronco Stadium, the Allen Noble Hall of Fame Gallery, the Williams Plaza, the Peterson-Preco Learning Center, the Appleton Outdoor Tennis Center, the Jackson Indoor Track, the Idaho Sports Medicine Institute, the Bronco Football Center, the gymnastics room expansion, the Simplot Center for Athletic Excellence, the Fedrizzi Fitness Center expansion, and an expansion of the Nicholson-Yanke Center. Bleymaier served as an assistant athletic director at UCLA prior to coming to Boise State. A member of the California Bar Association and a graduate of the Loyola Law School, Bleymaier received his bachelor’s degree from UCLA. Bleymaier lettered in football and was named to the All-Pac 8 Conference third team as a tight end for the Bruins. He was the recipient of the UCLA Outstanding Senior Award and was active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Bleymaier graduated from Borah High School in Boise. Bleymaier and his wife, Danell, have four children – Maribeth, Joe, Claire and Tom.

Media Policies Interviews: Members of the media should contact the softball Sports Information contact, Steven Olveda, at 208-426-1106 (office) or 916-521-7481 (cell) to arrange all interviews with the coaching staff and athletes. The softball team typically practices in the afternoons from 2-5 p.m. at the Caven-Williams Indoor Complex or at the Montain Cove Softball Field (weather permitting). Interviews at practice: Coach Thorpe will be available before practice as needed for interviews. Players will be available before or after practice, depending on class schedules. Game Day Interviews: Athletes are not available for pre-game interviews on game day. Post-game interviews are available with athletes and coaches approximately 10 minutes after the completion of a game. Requests for post-game interviews of a specific player should be made to a member of the Sports Information staff three-to-five minutes prior to the conclusion of the game. Press Credentials: Media members should request press passes through the Sports Information Office 24 hours before an event. Do to the setup of the facility no phone lines can be provided on game day. Credentials are given with priority to those working to cover the event under deadline. Statistical Services: Full statistical services are provided at each home event. Programs, rosters, press releases and season statistics are provided at the competition. A NCAA statistical box score is provided following the conclusion of the match.
