2010 Boise State Cross Country WHERE THE BRONCOS TRAIN... THE BOISE TRAIL SYSTEM
MILITARY RESERVE This 460 acre natural area is named for Ft. Boise and the associated military maneuvers that were performed here between the 1860’s and 1940’s. The area served several purposes, including the staging of gunnery practice into the hills above. After the military halted its operations, the community recognized the importance of this area and the Boise Front for recreation and wildlife values. Boise City acquired title to the property from the Federal government for “recreation and public purposes”. It is managed as a recreation and wildlife reserve, with human activities allowed in ways that do not detract from the natural values. Camelsback/Hulls Gulch Reserve These two City Reserves are popular and busy. Hulls Gulch Reserve was spared from development in the early 1990’s with the help of concerned citizens and local and federal funding. With Hulls Creek as the back bone, wildlife find the area to their liking as well. To assure opportunities to view wildlife, please stay only on the main trails. The ponds at the end of 9th St. were designed for flood control but also are a magnet for birds and other wildlife. The large pond is fenced to give the wildlife an area that is undisturbed by people and pets. Camels Back is
undergoing a “face lift” with restoration efforts. Nearly 3 miles of trail are available on the hill while an effort is underway to close and rehabilitate the steep hill climbs that have been eroding. The two rare plants found in the Reserve are also being protected by these efforts. CASTLE ROCK AND TABLE ROCK RESERVES These two geological landmarks located near the Old Idaho Penitentiary are steeped in history and beauty. Native Americans consider this area sacred. Native plant populations are found clinging to the slopes around Table Rock, providing a glimpse of what the entire Boise Front may have looked like at one time. Old quarry roads and the Table Rock tram route are now used as trails that provide a wide range of experiences and trail difficulties. The views aren’t half bad either. UPPER 8TH STREET TRAILS The network of trails in the upper 8th Street area were built specifically for Off Highway Vehicles, (OHV’s) with access from the 8th Street Parking lot. The Hulls Gulch Interpretive Trail is in this area as well and is a Pedestrian Only trail. With this mix of trail uses it is important to respect others and share the trails. The Trails

2010 Cross Country Preview
2010 SEASON PREVIEW... The 2010 Boise State cross country season is just around the corner and the Broncos are optimistic of the upcoming season. The men’s team has 12 members while the women have added a lot of depth to the squad, welcoming 32 women to the 2010 team. Not only are the Broncos beefing up the roster, but they are boosting the schedule as well to have the opportunity to compete against more difficult teams. The team opens their season on Sept. 11 at the Roger Curran Invitational, a meet hosted by Northwest Nazarene University. The Broncos continue their schedule in the Treasure Valley on Sept. 25 at the Bob Firman Invitational held at Eagle Island State Park. In addition, cross country coach Brad Wick has added a new meet to the schedule, the Roy Griak Invitational, also held on Sept. 25.
“The September 25 weekend we will split our squad with some going to the Roy Griak Invitational and some of the team competing in the Bob Firman Invite,” explained Wick. “The Roy Griak Invite will give our team a great chance to run against some nationally ranked teams and will be a good marker of how strong our team will be this season.” The Broncos continue on to the Charles Bowels Invitational on Oct. 2 in Salem, Ore., followed by the Oct. 16 Santa Clara Bronco Invite in Santa Clara, Calif. “The Bronco Invite has added more teams to the competition this year and it will be another great test for our team heading into the Western Athletic Conference Championships,” said Wick. Closing out the regular season is the College of Idaho Coyote Invite on Oct. 21, followed by the WAC Championships on Oct. 30 in Moscow, ...continued on page 6

2010 Boise State Cross Country ...continued from page 5 Idaho. From there postseason competition begins with the NCAA West Region Championships on Nov. 13 and the NCAA National Championships slated for Nov. 22 to close out the 2010 schedule. Boise State Women: The Bronco women’s cross country squad welcomes back 12 returnees as well as 20 newcomers to this season’s roster. Heading up the crew will be four seniors: Alexandria Bell, Carly Gerard, Layna Oyervides and Breanne Whitlock. The roster is also made up of seven juniors, five sophomores and 16 freshmen. “I am really looking forward to getting the first few meets under our belts to see where the team is at against competition,” said Wick. “They have been doing really well in our fall training, but until we actually compete, we’re not certain of where we are at.”
Boise State Men: The Boise State men’s cross country team welcomes back eight returnees and welcomes four newcomers to the roster. The men have four seniors this season, including Kevin Higgs, Sawyer Bosch, Scott Foley and transfer Brad Bogden. “Sawyer Bosch is a standout returnee and is looking strong entering the season,” said Wick. Wick also welcomes back standout sophomore Jeff Howard as well as junior Brian Pierre who will have a major impact on the team’s top-seven runners. “Jeff Howard will be a definite leader to the team this season,” said Wick. “I am also looking forward to having Brian Pierre, Scott Foley and Kevin Higgs play big factors this season.”
There are a handful of athletes looking to make an impact on the team this season, many coming from the large freshmen class.
Newcomers to the team include transfer Bogden, as well as freshmen Andrew Booth, Drew O’donoghue-McDonald and Allan Schroeder.
“Carly Gerard is ready for a great senior season,” said Wick. “She is coming into the season in great shape and ready to go. We also have a fantastic freshman class as well as some newcomers to the roster.”
“Bogden along with Schroeder and O’donoghue-McDonald will be major role players this season,” said Wick.
Sarah Bisterfeldt and Jamie Knapp add depth to the team after the pair competed in track and field this past season, but enter the cross country arena for the first time. The Broncos will also look to freshmen Emma Bates, Erin McLaughlin, Marisa VanderMalle and Shannon Moskowitz for immediate impact to the top-seven runners. Coach Wick also anticipates that by the end of the season freshmen Tessa Murray, Alyssa Boucher, Lauren Lucas and Rici Morrill could be contenders for the top-seven runners.
With the returning talent, as well as the added depth and new team members the men’s and women’s teams look to have a very successful 2010 season. “This is our last year in the WAC and we would like to go out with a bang,” exclaimed Wick. “I think we can compete for titles on both the men’s and women’s sides. We have the pieces to do that this year.”

Under his one year with the Broncos, Hardy has guided his teams to two men’s runner-up finishes (indoor/outdoor) at the Western Athletic Conference Championships, as well as a third-place (outdoor) and seventh-place finish (indoor) for the women in 2010. Prior to Boise State, Hardy served as the head track and field coach / director of cross country at Northern Arizona University for five seasons. Since taking over the head coaching duties of Lumberjack program in the fall of 2004, Hardy has guided the program to unprecedented heights. Sixteen (16) times his teams have won Big Sky Conference Championships, including
five just this past season when the Lumberjacks won the 2008 men’s and women’s cross country titles, the 2009 men’s and women’s indoor championships and the 2009 men’s outdoor championship. NAU just missed out on a sixth league title during the 2008-09 season when his women’s outdoor team placed second. At the national level this past year, the NAU men’s cross country team placed sixth at the NCAA Championships while his women’s team finished 23rd. At the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships Hardy’s Lumberjack team placed 32nd. Three other times his teams have recorded a top 10 finish at nationals. At the 2007 NCAA Cross Country Championships his men’s and women’s teams finished fourth and seventh respectively, while his 2006 women’s team placed 10th at the NCAA National Indoor Championships. Hardy coached student-athletes that have earned a total of 18 NCAA All-American awards, while 107 times they came away with an individual Big Sky Conference
Championship. His student-athletes set 22 NAU records and seven Big Sky championship records over the past five seasons. Through his seven seasons as an assistant at Northern Arizona, Hardy guided his athletes to over 50 individual conference championship titles, eight relay titles, 12 NCAA national qualifying marks, eight NCAA regional qualifying marks, nine school records, two Big Sky Conference records, and over 100 all-conference honors. In his first season as director, Hardy tallied up three more conference team titles and two top-25 NCAA team rankings. Besides 2008 Olympian Lopez Lomong, the most notable athletes under Hardy’s tutelage include Olympians Victor Castillo and Samantha George, Rudolph Drummond, Terrance Johnson, Daryl Wonsey, Vytautas Kancleris, Landon Benson, Liza Conteh, and Bubba Edmonds, who most recently competed in the 2008 Olympic trails in the decathlon. Head Coach J.W. Hardy for Venezuela in the 2004 Olympic Games after posting the third-best mark in the world that year in the long jump with a leap of 27-3. Castillo also competed at the 2003 World Championships in Paris finishing 25th, and was third in the long jump at the 2003 Pan American Games. Samantha George competed in the 2000 Olympic Games running on the Canadian 4x400 meter relay team. At NAU, George finished 11th in the 400-meter dash at the NCAA Championships and is the school record holder in the 400-meter and 200-meter events. Drummond (hurdles), Wonsey (hurdles), Kancleris (hurdles), Johnson (sprints), Benson (sprints), Conteh (jumps), and Edmonds (hurdles) also reaped the benefits of Hardy’s expertise as each attained provisional or automatic qualifying marks for the NCAA Championships in their respective events as NAU student-athletes. His teams have also excelled in the classroom with student-athletes receiving over 60 All-Big Sky academic awards, and his program averaging a 3.0 grade-pointaverage (GPA). Prior to his arrival at NAU, Hardy coached the sprints and horizontal jumps at Alhambra High School. During his three years at Alhambra, the team won two division titles, finished second at the Arizona state championships and had five athletes receive all-state honors. Hardy also coached local football standout, Eric Johnson, to a state long jump title as well as a second-place finish in the 100-meter dash and 4x100-meter relay. Johnson spent five years in the National Football League, recording a career-high 19 tackles in 2000, with the Oakland Raiders. Former Lumberjacks Francis St. Paul and Clarence Moore also add to Hardy’s list of student athletes who built - 11 -

careers in the NFL. Both men contributed to conference performances in the sprints during their collegiate careers. St. Paul provided speed and versatility in the efforts of the St. Louis Rams 2001 Super Bowl Championship. Moore played four seasons with the Baltimore Ravens after being drafted by the team in the sixth round in 2004. As an athlete, Hardy was a top NAU sprinter from 198993 under Ron Mann. He was a three-time NCAA AllAmerican and a seven-time conference champion. Hardy is also a member of two relay teams that still hold Big Sky conference records. In 1991 his teams set both indoor and outdoor records in the 4x400 with times of 3:06.06 and 3:04.77, respectively. Hardy was also an individual conference champion in the 400-meter dash as well as a two-time champion as a member of the 4x100-meter relay team. During the four years that Hardy competed
at NAU, the team won seven out of eight possible team titles. Hardy earned his bachelor’s degree from Northern Arizona in advertising in 1993. His wife, Amy is a speech pathologist for Flagstaff Unified School District. They have a 17-year old daughter, Kennedy and a four-year old son, Traevin.

Peters enjoyed a great deal of success while competing for the Huskies, which included racing at the NCAA national cross-country championships twice. In his second trip to nationals, Peters helped UW earn a 12th-place finish in the team standings. Despite starting his collegiate career as a walkon, Peters worked his way into the UW record books. Peters graduated from UW with a BS in psychology and a BA in philosophy. He is currently working on his Masters in kinesiology with a behavioral emphasis.
