FACES OF THE BRONCOS
MEN’S GOLF HEAD COACH KEVIN BURTON One of the most accomplished golfers to come out of the Treasure Valley, Kevin Burton is entering his seventh season as head coach of the Boise State men’s golf team. A former touring professional on the PGA Tour, Burton joined the Broncos prior to the 2005-06 season. Since his arrival, the Broncos have captured multiple team titles, including the first non-hosted victories since capturing the Big Sky Conference Championship during the 1995-96 season. Boise State spent Burton’s first six seasons challenging for the Western Athletic Conference Championship – twice finishing in the top three – and will make the move to the Mountain West for 201112, looking to do the same. Burton has helped Boise State produce two of the most decorated golfers in school history, Graham DeLaet and Troy Merritt. The duo each played on the PGA Tour the last two seasons, and DeLaet was the top money winner on the Canadian Tour in 2009. Merritt spent 2009 on the PGA’s Nationwide Tour, where he ranked amongst the top 30 in earnings. He won the Q-School Qualifying Tournament in 2009, earning his PGA Tour card. DeLaet, a three-time all-conference honoree, and Merritt, a two-time All-WAC performer, rank first and second, respectively, in career victories and career top-10 finishes. Merritt won the 2008 WAC Championship and was named Boise State’s first GCAA All-American. Each was named WAC Golfer of the Year and advanced to the NCAA Regional Championship. In all, Burton has helped five different golfers earn six first- or second-team all-conference accolades. Burton’s Broncos have also performed well in the classroom, earning Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District, GCAA All-American Scholar and academic all-conference accolades.
Profile Prior to his coaching career, Burton played on the PGA Tour during the 1997 season. He also played on the Australian PGA Tour (1988-90) and the Nike Tour (now the Nationwide Tour) in 1996 and 2001. A six-time Rocky Mountain Section PGA Player of the Year (2002-04; 2006-08), Burton was a member of the PGA Cup Team in 2000 and captured the Western PGA Club Professional Championship in 2002 and 2004. He is also a three-time winner of the Rocky Mountain Section PGA Championship (2002, 2003 and 2008), a two-time winner of the Snake River Championship (2004 and 2006), a four-time winner of the Idaho Open (1999, 2002, 2003 and 2008) and the 1995 California Open champion. He also finished second at the 1995 Albertson’s Boise Open. He has played several times in the PGA Club Professional National Championship – finishing as high as tied for third (2003). He finished fifth in the country in Player of the Year points for PGA Club Professionals in 2003. In addition to serving as the one-time club professional at Plantation, Burton has also served as a teaching professional at BabBury Golf Club in Eagle, Idaho, and spent time as the head professional at Pierce Park Greens in Boise and at the Redhawk Golf Club in Temecula, Calif. A Boise native, Burton graduated from Boise High School before attending Idaho. He played four years for the Vandals, and earned his bachelor’s degree in computer science in 1986. He and wife Amy have two children, daughter Ali and son Cal.

He advanced to the 2006 NCAA Super Regional with the Vulcans, and then transferred to Boise State prior to the 2006-07 season. After redshirting, Surmeier went on to earn three letters with the Broncos. His best finish came at the Western Intercollegiate, where he recorded a top-25 finish as a senior. During his prep career Surmeier captured three Snake River Valley Conference individual championships, and led FHS to its first district and 3A state titles.

Broncos Finish Fourth at Season-Opening Cougar Classic Day One Recap... PULLMAN, Wash. – The Boise State men’s golf team boasted three players in the top 25 after the first two rounds of the seasonopening Cougar Classic Sept. 12, including a fifth-place-tying effort from senior Scott Spiewak. Spiewak posted a 36-hole total of 1-under 141 (70-71) at the par-71, 7,308-yard Palouse Ridge Golf Course, and headed into the final round looking for his first-career top-10 finish. The Broncos were in fourth place with a team score of 579 (+11; 284-295), just seven strokes back of tournament-host Washington State and Idaho. The Cougars and Vandals were tied for second place with team scores of 572 (+4), while San Jose State led the 14-school event with a 563 (-5).
“We played very solid,” Boise State head coach Kevin Burton said. “There were a couple of mistakes in the afternoon, but for our first tournament of the season I am very pleased with the team’s effort.” Junior Taeksoo Kim was tied for 14th with a 36-hole total of 143 (+1), just one stroke back of the top 10 and two strokes back of Spiewak. Redshirt sophomore Jordan Skyles was tied for 23rd with a 147 (+3). Skyles, who made his Bronco debut after transferring from Oregon prior to this season, posted a 1-under 70 in the opening round, his lowest collegiate 18-hole score. Rounding out the scoring for the Broncos were Charlie Marusiak (150, +8) and Clayton
Kosanovich (156, +14). Taylor Porter was competing as an individual, and posted a 151 (+9).
Day Two Recap... PULLMAN, Wash. – Boise State redshirt sophomore men’s golfer Jordan Skyles carded a final-round 68 (-3) at the seasonopening Cougar Classic Sept. 13, shooting up the leaderboard into a tie for seventh place. Skyles, junior Taeksoo Kim and senior Scott Spiewak each finished in the top 25, leading the Broncos to a fourth-place team finish their best tournament effort since the 2010 Bandon Dunes Championship (March 11-12) when the team also finished fourth. The Broncos posted a tournament-total of 869 (284, 295, 290, +17) at the par-71, 7,308-yard Palouse Ridge Golf Course, just four strokes back of tournament-host Washington State in the 14-team field. “We teed off later this morning and battled windy conditions, so I am proud of the way the team competed in the final round,” Boise State head coach Kevin Burton said. “Jordan moved into the top 10 on the last day, and Taeksoo and Scott finished just outside the top 10. Overall, it was a great opening to our season.” Skyles, who transferred from Oregon prior to this season, posted a three-round total of 213 (70-75-68, E). His final-round score was tied for the lowest of the day. Kim finished just two strokes back of the top 10 after carding a 215 (71-72-72, +2). Day Two Recap...
EAGLE, Idaho – The Boise State men’s golf team hosted its first tournament in more than five years, and the team entered the final round of the Dash Thomas Memorial in fourth place. The Broncos posted a two-round total of 566 (-2) as a team at the par-71, 6,890-yard BanBury Golf Club, Sept. 26.
EAGLE, Idaho – The Boise State men’s golf team finished in fourth place at its first home tournament in more than five years, placing four golfers in the top 25 at the inaugural Dash Thomas Memorial, Sept. 27.
“There are five teams at par-or-better, and 16 golfers under-par,” Boise State head coach Kevin Burton said. “The course is in great shape, and there is some great golf being played. The final round will be a great opportunity for the Treasure Valley to come out and see a great round of college golf and some great college golfers.” The Broncos boasted four golfers in the top 25, including Taeksoo Kim, who was tied for seventh place with a 4-under 138. Jordan Skyles was tied for 17th with a 36hole total of 142 (E), and Scott Spiewak and Charlie Marusiak were each tied for 21st with scores of 143 (+1). Boise State’s Clayton Kosanovich played as an individual, and was tied for third place – just three strokes back of the lead. Kosanovich was tied for the lead after a first-round 65 (-6), and followed with a second-round 2-under 69 for a total of 134 (-8).
Senior Scott Spiewak, juniors Jordan Skyles and Taeksoo Kim and redshirt junior Charlie Marusiak each finished in the top 25 at the par-71, 6,890-yard BanBury Golf Club. “We didn’t quite play to our potential, but there are little things that we can correct and we will continue to get better,” Boise State head coach Kevin Burton said. “BanBury was in great shape, and I can’t thank the staff out there enough, and our community for supporting this event.” The Broncos finished with a three-round total of even-par 852, notching their second fourthplace finish in as many tournaments this season. The two top-five efforts are already more than in all of the 2010-11 season, and as many as the team posted during 2009-10. Spiewak finished tied for 11th with a 54-hole total of 211 (-2), Skyles and Kim each tied for 17th with totals of 214 (+1) and Marusiak finished in 21st, carding a 216 (+3). For Skyles, Kim and Spiewak, their efforts at the Dash Thomas Memorial gave them two-
straight top-25 finishes to begin the 2011-12 season. Taylor Porter rounded out the scoring for the Broncos with a 223 (+10). The Broncos’ top finisher was playing as an individual – junior Clayton Kosanovich tied for fifth with a 6-under 207. He was tied for the lead after the first round and was just three strokes back of the leader entering the final round. He finished seven strokes back of the tournament medalist. Kim – one of two Broncos in the top 10 and one of three in the top 25 – was the only player in the 48-man field under-par after the first day at the par-72, 7,525-yard Colbert Hills Golf Club. He posted an even-par 72 in the opening round, and followed with a 5-under 67 in the second. His 36-hole total of 139 (-5) led a trio of golfers tied for second place by five strokes. “He played amazing today, and probably could have gone even lower,” Boise State head coach Kevin Burton said. “I’m looking forward to seeing what he does in the final round, and what we do as a team. We aren’t too far off the lead, and I’m hopeful we can put together a great final round.” Fellow junior Clayton Kosanovich was in fifth place after posting rounds of 71 (-1) and 74 (+2). His two-round total of 145 (+1) was six strokes off Kim’s lead. Senior Scott Spiewak was in 14th place with a two-round total of 150 (+6), two strokes back of the top 10. The trio had Boise State in second place as a team, just six strokes back of first place. The Broncos’ day-one total of 588 (+12) trailed only Idaho (582, +6). The total was also three strokes better than tournament-host Kansas State (591, +15).
Junior Jordan Skyles (157, +13) and redshirt junior Charlie Marusiak (161, +17) rounded out the Bronco contingent.
Day Two Recap...
“Taeksoo played a phenomenal tournament,” Boise State head coach Kevin Burton said. “I am extremely proud of how he played this week, and I am impressed with our overall start to the season as a team.”
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Boise State junior men’s golfer Taeksoo Kim captured the first tournament victory of his collegiate career and the first by a Bronco in more than two years, winning the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate by six strokes, Oct. 4.
Boise State boasted three players in the top 10 – and four in the top 25 – en route to a runner-up finish as a team. The Broncos carded a three-round score of 886 (+22) en route to their best finish of the young season.
Kim fired rounds of 72-67-71 to finish at 6-under 210. He was the only golfer in the 48-man field to finish under par at the par-72, 7,525-yard Colbert Hills Golf Club. The win was the first by a Bronco individual since Blake Brown earned tournament medalist honors at the Palouse Cougar Collegiate, Sept. 14-15, 2009.
The Broncos had three top-four finishes in as many tournaments, the finest fall season since Burton’s first season coaching the team. In 2005 the Broncos recorded four top-three finishes in five events. Senior Scott Spiewak posted an even-par final-round 72, moving into a tie for sixth place with a three-round total of 222 (+6). He had
entered the final round in 14th. Junior Clayton Kosanovich posted his secondstraight top-10 finish, finishing with a 54-hole total of 225 (+9). The effort was good for a tie for 10th. Junior Jordan Skyles finished tied for 22nd, finishing with a three-round total of 232 (+16). Kim, Skyles and Spiewak each finished in the top 25 in each of the Broncos’ first three tournaments of the season. FROM BOISE TO THE PROS... After record-setting collegiate careers at Boise State University, Graham DeLaet and Troy Merritt have gone on to succeed at the professional level.
GRAHAM DELAET (2001-06)
TROY MERRITT (2006-08)
DeLaet finished No. 1 on the Canadian Tour in 2009 - earning Player of the Year honors - before playing his first full season on the PGA TOUR in 2010.
Merritt won the 2009 PGA TOUR Qualifying Tournament, earning his card for the 2010 season. He became one of just three players since 1992 to hold at least a share of the lead after each of the event’s six rounds (Scott Verplank, 1997; Frank Lickliter II, 2007).
He has now earned more than $1 million on tour, recording three top-10 finishes and eight top-25 finishes. He has four international victories, and set the course record with a 10-under-par 62 in the third round of the Reno-Tahoe Open in 2010. He earned a career-best finish at the Shell Houston Open in 2010 (T3), following four sub-par rounds.
In his first full season on tour, he recorded a top-10 finish and four top 25s. Included was a third-place effort at the 2010 Zurich Classic of New Orleans. He went on to capture the $1 million Kodak Challenge in 2010, securing his card for the 2011 season.
