As our program begins its seventh season at Boise State University, we are proud of our start and excited about the future. The 2011-12 season was the best to date, winning our third conference championship in a row as a new member of the Mountain West. We qualified our first relay to the NCAA Championships where it finished in 15th place to earn honorable mention AllAmerica honors. This season we welcome our new diving coach, Allison Brennan, who was an NCAA Champion and competed internationally for six years as a professional diver after her collegiate career. As we embark on a new year and our second in the Mountain West, we have set new goals as a team, and we are challenged and motivated to follow last season with another recordbreaking year. Our staff is committed to establishing and ensuring an environment where motivated and talented student-athletes strive for excellence in swimming and diving and in the classroom. We will work together to consistently challenge for Mountain West Championships and earn representation and points at the NCAA Championships, while striving for even bigger goals of competing at the international level. For the women who have chosen to join our program, we are committed to help them: •Graduate in academic fields they care about •Develop as capable, independent young women who are ready to go out and make a difference in the world. •Achieve their dreams as swimmers, divers and students, and to do so as a team of excellence in all areas. It is a tremendous honor and privilege to compete for and coach at Boise State University. We know this is one of the best places to be a student-athlete and a coach. Join us as we celebrate the triumphs of this season!

BIG SPLASH JAN. 19, 2013

‘Big Splash’ is coming back to the Boise West YMCA. Members of the Boise State football team will ditch their helmets and pads, and take their skills to the diving board to show support for the Bronco swimming and diving team. The appropriately-named competition is a fan favorite.

The only guarantee at Big Splash is an afternoon of fun and surprises. In 2012, Geraldo Boldewijn’s triple front flip netted a perfect score to take home the individual title and lead the offense to victory in the diving competition. The defense won the 4x25-yard relay event.

2012-13 Boise State

New Challenges Await in 2012-13 Another season of Boise State women’s

swimming and diving brings another opportunity to rise to a challenge. After succeeding as the underdog, the favorite and the new kid on the block, this year presents a new test. The Broncos enter the 2012-13 season with three-consecutive conference titles in tow, but without some of the names that became synonymous with Boise State swimming and diving during the program’s first six years of existence. Gone is a class full of Broncos who laid the foundation of success, including threetime conference swimmer of the year Amber Boucher and 16-time conference champion Stephanie North. Boucher and North became the first Broncos to be invited to the NCAA Championships in 2011, and made a return trip in 2012. Joining the pair last season at the national meet and earning All-America honors in the 200yard freestyle relay were Stevie Hughey and Sydney Johansen.

history. She helped win conference titles in the 800-yard freestyle relay each of her first three seasons. Her name sits atop the record books in the 500-, 1000- and 1650yard freestyle events, besting her own marks in all three events at the 2012 Mountain West Championships. Cahill’s performance at the conference meet included a gutsy silver-medal effort in the mile, smashing her own school record by 20 seconds. Raininger is a three-time individual conference champion, including the 400yard individual medley last season. She returns to the Broncos after competing at the 2012 Canadian Olympic Trials in the offseason. Pfeiffer, the lone senior among the diving corps, scored in all three events at the 2012 conference meet. Choi enters the season right behind Hughey as the top returning sprinters for the Broncos.

Ciera Cortney is the top returning diver for the Broncos after placing in the top 10 of all three events at the MW Championships. Cortney finished her sophomore season with a 10th-place showing on one-meter at the NCAA Zone E Championships. Brooke Balogh and Olivia Harrell round out Boise State’s junior class. Balogh scored in two events at the conference championships for the second-straight season and is one of the team’s most versatile swimmers. Harrell closed her sophomore campaign with a lifetime best in the 50-yard freestyle.

Seniors Hughey, now a senior captain, has been a key contributor since arriving on campus and will now look to step into an even larger role as the team’s top sprint freestyler. She is joined in the senior class by Jennifer Cahill, Shanelle Choi, Lexi Pfeiffer and Christine Raininger. Cahill enters her final season at Boise State looking to add to her status as the most accomplished distance swimmer in Bronco

Juniors Boise State’s junior class boasts a pair of U.S. Olympic Trials participants in Rachel Heaney and Chelsea Miller. Heaney holds the school record in the 200-yard butterfly, winning the event at the 2011 Western Athletic Conference Championships. She took third at the Mountain West meet last season and has scored in three individual events at each of her conference championship appearances. Miller is the top 200-yard breaststroker in school history and has advanced to the championship final at conference meets five times in her career.

Schedule Boise State put together a challenging schedule for 2012-13, including a pair of home meets. The Broncos will host BYU Dec. 15, at the Boise West YMCA. The final home meet of the season will be Jan. 19, 2013, against conference foe Wyoming. The Broncos have only faced the Cougars once previously, falling in dual-meet competition Nov. 9, 2009, in Provo, Utah. Boise State went head to head with the Cowgirls for the first time at the 2012 MW Championships, where Wyoming took fourth.

Freshmen Johansen’s win in the 200 individual medley at the MW Championships marked the fourth-straight year a Bronco freshman took home individual gold at a conference meet. This year’s crop of newcomers is ready to continue the tradition. Talie Anchustegui, Blake Balogh, Jenni Domanowski, Devin Madsen, Emri Moore, Taylor Padington and Sam Wicks come to campus with more

accolades than any group of freshmen in Boise State history. Among the new faces is a U.S. Olympic Trials participant (Domanowski), a Canadian Olympic Trials participant (Padington), a three-time Alaska Female Swimmer of the Year (Wicks), an 11-time NISCA All-American (Anchustegui) and countless other awards in and out of the pool.

Bronco History

Heather Harper is back for her second year as a Bronco after competing at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials. Harper placed in the top six of both breaststroke events at the conference meet as a freshman. Jessica Bottelberghe displayed her wide array of talents during her first year with

conference championships. Johansen earned five medals and broke six school records in helping the Broncos take home the team trophy. She picked up a gold, silver and bronze in her individual events while adding gold in two relays. The Sacramento, Calif., native topped the podium in the 200yard individual medley, took second in the 100-yard breaststroke and placed third in the 200-yard backstroke, setting the school record in each. Johansen was a member of the conference-champion and schoolrecord 200-yard freestyle relay and 400yard medley relay. She also helped the 200yard medley relay set a Boise State best.

Student-Athletes

Three returning Broncos competed at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials, representing Boise YMCA Swim Team. From left to right: Heather Harper (100-meter breaststroke), Rachel Heaney (200-meter butterfly) and Chelsea Miller (200-yard breaststroke). Quick Facts

2012-13 Boise State The Broncos will hit the road for the first meet of the season Oct. 6, at in-state rival Idaho. The early-season road meets continue at Pacific-12 Conference opponents Oregon State (Nov. 3) and Arizona (Nov. 17). The Broncos will also face British Columbia Nov. 3, in Corvallis, Ore. For the fourth-straight season Boise State will travel to the Missouri Invitational in Columbia, Mo., for its fall focus meet. The Broncos finished second behind the host Tigers each of the past two seasons. After hosting BYU, Boise State will travel to Honolulu Dec. 31-Jan. 9, for holiday training and competition before returning home for the meet against Wyoming. The final two meets of the season will be on the road at Denver (Jan. 25) and at Colorado State (Jan. 26). The Broncos defeated the Rams last season in the final meet before the conference championships. First-year diving coach Allison Brennan will take the Bronco divers to a pair of additional invitational meets. The Wildcat Diving Invitational takes place Nov. 15-18, in Tucson, Ariz., in conjunction with the swimming meet Nov. 17 at Arizona. The divers will also compete at the Air Force Academy Diving Invitational Jan. 25-26. The year builds up to the 2013 Mountain West Championships at Palo Alto Natatorium in San Antonio, where Boise State will look to defend its crown. The Broncos will be seeking a third-straight appearance at the NCAA Championships. The 2013 meet will be held March 21-23, in

Indianapolis. Boise State will also be hosting its inaugural Alumnae Meet Oct. 20, at the campus pool in the Kinesiology Annex Building. Picked Second Boise State was picked to finish second in the Mountain West by a vote of the conference coaches. The Broncos led the way with five first-place votes and totaled 59 points, but finished one point behind San Diego State (60) in the preseason projections. Boise State is the defending champion, topping the Aztecs by five points at the 2012 MW Championships in the closest team race in meet history. SDSU won the 2011 crown. The Broncos were also picked to finish second behind the Aztecs in the 2011-12 preseason poll. Familiar Territory Aside from being projected to finish as runner up for the second-straight year, the 2013 Mountain West Championships will feature another feeling of comfort for the veteran Broncos. The site of the conference meet, Palo Alto Natatorium in San Antonio, is the same facility where Boise State won the Western Athletic Conference Championship in 2011, before joining the Mountain West. Boise State still owns five pool records at Palo Alto, including the 400-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relays.

New NCAA Selection Process Prior to the 2012-13 season, the NCAA Division I Championships/Sports Management Cabinet approved a new selection process for the men’s and women’s swimming and diving championships, starting with the 2013 meet. The new selection process puts more focus on indvidual events. Instead of selecting the 281 women swimmers by counting participants in individual and relay events, the new process will select qualifiers based solely on individual events. Teams with at least four swimmers invited in individual events and teams that are eligible for at least one relay through the qualifying standard would be eligible to swim additional relay events, provided they have met the provisional relay standard throughout the season. Schools would be allowed to bring up to four uninvited relay alternates to the finals site at the institution’s expense. The Division I Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving Committee believes the new selection process creates more competitive fields in each of the individual events while still allowing the top relay teams to enter those events. In addition, more schools will be represented at the championships.

The Broncos won the 2012 MW crown in Oklahoma City, for their third-consecutive conference title. The 2010 WAC title also came in San Antonio, at Davis Natatorium.

“Our athletic department at Boise State is one of the most successful,

The 2010 title came on the heels of a sixth-place finish at the 2009 WAC Championships, then a program best. The leap from sixth to first is the second-greatest year-to-year improvement in WAC history. Only Hawaii, which finished eighth in 1998-99 and second in 1999-2000, rose more spots in the final standings from one year to the next. (That same season the WAC went from a 14-team conference to a six-team league in women’s swimming and diving.) The Broncos also became just the sixth different WAC champion in the more than 20 years the conference has carried the sport, and the quickest to do so from the time of the program’s inception.

Bronco History

Prior to starting the program at Boise State, Hill served as the assistant coach at nationally-ranked Texas A&M. While working with the Aggies, she worked closely with Olympic swimmers Christine Marshall (USA), Julia Wilkinson (Canada), and Triin Aljand (Estonia). Complementing her collegiate coaching experience, she has coached U.S. Olympic Trial qualifiers, summer national finalists and champions, Olympic competitors and Canadian national team members. Hill also gained international coaching experience in 2005 as she was a member of the Estonian National Team coaching staff at the European Championships in Italy.

The team has improved by leaps and bounds every season since its inauguration in 2006-07. After a 2008-09 campaign in which Hill and the Broncos saw school records broken in every event, just three of those marks stood through the championship 2009-10 season, and 22 more records fell as Boise State repeated as league champions in 2010-11. The Broncos broke 14 school records on their way to winning a third conference title in 2011-12.

Season Review

Hill was named the 2011 Western Athletic Conference Swimming Coach of the Year following the Broncos’ second-consecutive team title. After switching conferences for the 2011-12 season, Hill led Boise State to the 2012 Mountain West title and was named 2012 MW Swimming Coach of the Year.

progressive athletic departments in the country,” said Hill. “I was given an amazing opportunity to build a program from scratch, and I would not want to do it anywhere else. Boise is a fantastic city, the campus is beautiful and our family is so excited to be settled in the northwest. I was excited to get this program started off on the right foot, and based on feedback from coaches and swimmers in the Northwest and around the country, it is clear that we are headed in the right direction.”

Student-Athletes

Kristin Hill enters her seventh season at the helm of the Boise State swimming and diving team this fall after being named the inaugural head coach for women’s swimming and diving at Boise State when the program was added June 27, 2006. In its first six seasons the program won three conference championships and was represented at the past two NCAA Championships.

THE BRONCOS UNDER HILL • Three-Consecutive Conference Championships • Five All-America Honors • Six NCAA CHampionships Participants • Eight Olympic Trials Qualifiers

• 17 Individual Conference Champions • 12 Conference Relay Titles • 72 All-Conference Academic Selections • 40 Dual-Meet Victories

Boise State repeated in impressive fashion at the 2011 WAC Championships. The Broncos finished 13-1 in dual-meet competition, with the only setback coming at No. 23 UCLA, and carried fast times into the conference meet. Hill guided the team to 10 event titles, including all five relay wins, and 20 NCAA ‘B’ times. The Broncos earned 57 allconference spots as they racked up 835 points to outscore second-place Hawai’i by 258 points. It was the ninth-most points scored in meet history and the largest margin of victory since 2003.

six all-time conference records. It was the third-consecutive conference swimmer of the year award for Boucher.

The 2010-11 season ended with Amber Boucher and Stephanie North earning invitations to the NCAA Championships. Boucher became the first Boise State All-American in the sport of swimming and diving with a 12th-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly. Boucher’s five points gave Boise State a 39th-place finish at its first national meet. After getting a taste of the pinnacle of collegiate swimming and diving, Hill led the Broncos into a 2011-12 season full of new challenges. Boise State changed conference affiliations and the Mountain West presented a stiffer challenge for swimming and diving. The Broncos rolled through the regular season with a 4-1 dual-meet record—again only suffering a loss at UCLA—and a first-place finish in their own invitational meet. The invite-heavy schedule also included runner-up showings at the Rice Invitational (behind Arkansas), the Missouri Invitational (behind Missouri) and the San Diego Relays (behind UCLA). Dual-meet victories against Oregon State and Colorado State closed out the regular season and set the Broncos up for their championship stretch. Hill guided Boise State to 10 event titles, including four relays, and a thrilling upset of defending-champion San Diego State to claim the school’s first championship in its new conference. The Broncos trailed by one point entering the final event, but the 400-yard freestyle relay capped off a second-straight undefeated season, winning by more than three seconds and setting an all-time conference record to wrestle the title away from the Aztecs in the closest team race in meet history. In addition to Hill’s coach of the year nod, Boucher was named 2012 MW Swimmer of the Year after winning six gold medals, one silver and setting

Three Conference Championships

Hill and the Broncos also made a return trip to the NCAA Championships in 2012, this time qualifying four student-athletes. Boise State’s 200yard freestyle relay became the first relay in Mountain West history to be invited to the prestigious meet. Boucher, North, Stevie Hughey and Sydney Johansen swam to a 16th-place finish at nationals to earn honorable mention All-America recognition. The two points from the relay lifted Boise State to a 47th-place finish at the meet. The 2012 season did not end with the NCAA Championships. Hill coached five Boise State swimmers at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb. The Broncos were also represented at the 2012 Canadian Olympic Trials. The 2008-09 season was a landmark year as Hill guided the Broncos to their first victory over in-state rival Idaho in a dual meet, as well as leapfrogging the Vandals at the WAC Championships. Boise State also crowned its first individual conference champion that season. During the 2007-08 season, the Broncos had outstanding improvement from their inaugural season, setting team records in every event and featuring nine finalists at the WAC Championships. They finished seventh overall, beating San Diego and finishing just 64 points behind Idaho. The team won its first dual meets against Division I schools, beating Air Force during a road trip to Colorado Springs and San Jose State at home. Hill has proven to be an excellent recruiter as freshmen have played key roles in the yearly improvement at Boise State. In 2008-09 Boucher and North landed on the medal podium at the WAC Championships in their first year of collegiate swimming, while North became the Broncos’ first individual conference champion. At the 2010 conference meet, the freshman class contributed to 273 points in helping Boise State capture the team crown, including a pair of individual titles for Christine Raininger. The following year was equally impressive with freshmen combining for nine top-eight finishes at the conference meet as Rachel Heaney earned a conference title. In 2012, Johansen continued the tradition of Bronco freshmen topping the podium when she claimed the 200-yard individual

Hill helped the Aggies to their highest dual-meet ranking (eighth) and an 11th-place finish at the 2006 NCAA Championships. While at Texas A&M she coached 17 All-Americans, nine Academic All-Americans and one USA Swimming National Champion. Over her six-year tenure at Texas A&M, the Aggie women posted a dual meet record of 53-18, which marked the best record over a six-year span in school history.

Hill is married to Jason Hill ,who graduated from the University of Colorado-Denver with a bachelor of arts in political science. He received his nursing degree in Bryan, Texas, from Blinn College. Jason is a registered nurse at St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center in Boise. Jason and Kristin have a son, Luke Watson Hill, who was born in December 2004 and a daughter, Julia Louise Hill, who was born in May 2007.

Before arriving in College Station, Hill was the head men’s and women’s swimming and diving coach at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colo., for three seasons (1997-2000). During the 1999-2000 season, the teams set 22 school records and she coached one honorable mention All-American. In addition to her coaching role, she was also the assistant director of admissions for the university from 1998 through 2000. Hill swam for the University of Puget Sound from 1990-94 where she

Hill served as an assistant women’s swimming coach at Texas A&M from 2000-06. In her six seasons at College Station, she worked in all aspects of coaching with the Aggie program, including on-deck coaching in the water, dry-land training, recruiting, program budgeting, administration and coordination of team travel.

Hill grew up swimming in the northwest, training and competing with the Bellevue Club (Bellevue, Wash.) and Chinook Aquatic Club (Mercer Island, Wash.). Her swimming career began in Southern California in 1982, where she swam for the Mission Viejo Nadadores.

“Our goal is to graduate all student-athletes who start our program and be sure they leave as responsible, independent young women who are ready to go out and make a difference in our world,” said Hill. “We emphasize teamwork, leadership and personal development every day in our program. We laugh a lot, but we also teach a great deal and hold each team member accountable. These things, along with our intense desire as athletes to work hard, improve and make a mark nationally as a program, will continue to set our team apart.”

Immediately after graduating, Hill pursued a master’s degree at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs. While attending graduate school, she worked as a graduate research fellow for the International Center for Aquatic Research at the Olympic Training Center. Hill had the opportunity to work with many elite athletes, including the 1996 U.S. Olympic swimming team. From 1994-97, Hill was an age group coach for the Colorado Springs Swim Team. She also coached the Manitou Springs High School swim team in 1996. In 1997 she received her master’s degree in basic science with an emphasis in exercise physiology.

During the program’s six seasons, Bronco swimmers and divers have been recognized with 72 all-conference academic honors. Academics are heavily emphasized in this program, and the Bronco swimming and diving team recorded a 3.312 GPA during the 2012 spring semester to earn Scholar All-America Team recognition from the College Swimming Coaches’ Association of America for the sixth-consecutive semester. In the past three years Boise State swimming and diving student-athletes have collected 11 individual CSCAA Scholar All-America awards, including three by Boucher.

She was a conference champion in the 50-yard freestyle in 1992, and she placed in the top five at the national championships in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle events all four years of her collegiate career. Hill also advanced to nationals as a member of all five relay teams her sophomore, junior and senior years at Puget Sound. In addition, she was an NAIA Academic All-American in 1993 and 1994, and was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi National Honorary Scholastic Fraternity. Justin Brosseau Associate Head Coach Fifth Year Missouri State, 2007

Justin Brosseau enters his fifth season with the Boise State women’s swimming and diving program, his first as associate head coach. Brosseau spent the previous four seasons as an assistant coach, helping the Broncos to a conference championship each of the last three years. “Justin is an integral part of our coaching staff,” said Hill. “He is a young, talented coach who relates well to the women on our team and also offers a lot of knowledge both in technique and in the most effective training methods. He is positive, hard working, dedicated and organized.” Hill and Brosseau guided Boise State to back-to-back appearances at the NCAA Championships. Amber Boucher and Stephanie North qualified for the national meet in 2011, with Boucher earning honorable mention AllAmerica honors in the 100-yard butterfly. The Broncos took four studentathletes to the 2012 NCAA Championships as Boise State became the first Mountain West team to qualify a relay to the meet with its 200yard freestyle relay squad of Boucher, North, Stevie Hughey and Sydney Johansen. The quartet picked up a 16th-place finish for All-America recognition. The 2012 appearance came on the heels of winning the Mountain West Championships during the Broncos’ first year in the conference. Boise State claimed 10 event titles, and set seven all-time conference records. The Broncos had a top-three finisher in 14 of the 18 swimming events

at the championships and led the conference with 46 All-Mountain West honors. During Boise State’s final two years as a member of the Western Athletic Conference Brosseau helped lead the Broncos to the top of the conference, winning the 2010 and 2011 team titles. The second championship came in dominant fashion as the team took 10 event titles, including all five relays, and set seven facility records at Palo Alto Natatorium. The Broncos earned 57 all-conference spots as they racked up 835 points to outscore second-place Hawai’i by 258 points. It was the ninth-most points scored in meet history and the largest margin of victory since 2003. The 2010 title came in just the fourth year of existence for the Boise State swimming and diving program and a year after a then-best sixth-place finish at the conference championships. Brosseau’s first four years with the Broncos coincided with the careers of the two most decorated student-athletes in program history, Boucher and North. Boucher was a two-time All-American and 18-time conference champion. She earned conference swimmer of the year each of her final three seasons and left with school records in four individual events and four relays. North also qualified for two NCAA Championships and was a 16-time conference champion, never finishing worse than third in an individual event at a conference championship during her career.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to work with coach Hill and be a part of creating a tradition of excellence at Boise State,” said Brosseau. “This is a great university in a fantastic city, and the athletic department is very supportive of the program. This team has made great strides, and I am looking forward to helping Boise State swimming develop into a force at the conference and national levels.”

Bronco History

Brosseau began his coaching career with the ASA Aquadogs (formerly Truman Aquatics) USA Swimming team in Kirksville, Mo., serving as head coach and administrator of the program from 2002-05. He received his BA in English literature from Missouri State University in 2007.

Competitively, Brosseau was a three-year varsity letterwinner at Truman State University from 2001-04. He achieved several NCAA-II “B” cuts during his career and is still ranked in the Truman swimming all-time top 10 in both the 200 breaststroke and 400 IM. In high school he was a member of the Springfield Aquatics senior team, was a multiple-event qualifier at the sectional level and a USA Swimming Zone Champion in the 200 breaststroke his junior year.

Season Review

Brosseau joined the Bronco family in 2008 after spending the previous season as a volunteer assistant coach for Drury University under coach Brian Reynolds. While at Drury, the women’s team finished second at the NCAA-II Championships while the men’s team won its fourth-consecutive title. In addition to his responsibilities at Drury, Brosseau served as an assistant coach for Springfield (Mo.) Aquatics from 2005-08. During his tenure at Springfield, he coached and worked with Missouri Valley LSC Top 8 swimmers, sectional qualifiers, Missouri State high school champions, junior national qualifiers and NCAA Division II national champions. As a team, Springfield Aquatics finished no lower than fifth at the Missouri Valley Division I Championships during his tenure.

“Justin’s swimming and coaching experiences with national championship programs have been an asset to our team,” added Hill. “He understands our commitment to be a successful and highly-competitive swimming and diving program at the conference and national level, and he is committed to helping our women be at their best outside the pool, in the classroom and beyond. We are blessed to have him as a part of our program.”

With Brosseau’s help the Broncos have continued to make strides outside of the collegiate ranks as well. Five Boise State swimmers competed at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, with another Bronco traveling to the Canadian Olympic Trials.

Allison Brennan Diving Coach First Year South Carolina, 2005

Allison Brennan enters her first year as diving coach at Boise State. Brennan joins the Broncos after spending the past four seasons as a member of the coaching staff at her alma mater, the University of South Carolina. “We couldn’t be more thrilled to have attracted a coach and diver of Allison’s caliber to be a part of our staff,” Hill said. “Allison stood out clearly in the interview process as the best person for our program to take the next step as we move up in national rankings.” Brennan began her stint as an assistant diving coach at South Carolina during the 2008-09 season, working under Todd Sherritt. In each of her four years, Brennan and the Gamecocks sent one diver to the NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships and at least three women to the NCAA Zone Diving Championships. Four student-athletes competed at the zone meet in three of those seasons, including every female diver on the roster each of the past two seasons. Brennan helped coach three-time All-American Taryn Zack to a pair of Southeastern Conference Championships in the one-meter event (2009 and 2011). In 2011-12, Brennan tutored Courtney Forcucci to two AllAmerica honors and an SEC crown in the three-meter.

Three Conference Championships

“Allison has worked under one of the best diving coaches in the country for the past 11 years as both an athlete and a coach,” Hill said. “Our team is motivated to be the best we can, and our divers play a huge role in our success. They are motivated to work hard and keep getting better, and they appreciated Allison’s background, her focus on the team and individual success, and her drive to help them exceed expectations.” At the club level, Brennan spent the past seven years with South Carolina Divers, based out of Columbia, S.C. She was the head coach at SCD, coaching Junior Olympic Divers ages 5-18 as well as novice divers and providing diving lessons. “I’m very excited for the opportunity to help continue the successful tradition of the Boise State University swimming and diving program,” Brennan said. “My goal is to elevate the Broncos to one of the premier diving programs in the country.” A decorated athlete, Brennan has been a member of the USA Diving National and International Team since 2000. Her hall-of-fame career at South Carolina was highlighted by the 2004 NCAA title in the one-meter event. In all, she claimed four All-America awards in her time with the Gamecocks and was named the 2006 USC Female Athlete of the Year after sweeping the springboard events at the 2006 SEC Championships to earn SEC Diver of the Year. Brennan followed the conference championship

The collegiate success translated to the national and international levels. Brennan finished third at the 2008 United States Olympic Trials and was an alternate for the U.S. at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

At the U.S. Grand Prix in May 2009, Brennan became the first American woman to win a gold medal in an international grand prix event in more than a decade. She bested a pair of 2008 Olympic medalists to take top honors in the three-meter event. “Her firsthand knowledge of high-level diving and what it takes to be the best will allow our diving program to continue to grow dramatically,” Hill said.

Quick Facts

2012-13 Boise State

2011-12: CONQUERING NEW HEIGHTS Boise State’s women’s swimming and diving team entered the Mountain West for the 2011-12 season with a short history, but a long list of accomplishments. The Broncos entered their sixth season as a program fresh off a second-consecutive team title in the Western Athletic Conference and their first appearance at the NCAA Championships. Under the guidance of Kristin Hill, the only head coach in the program’s history, Boise State managed to raise the bar yet again. The Broncos used the most challenging regular-season schedule in school history to ready themselves for the championship meets at season’s end. They responded by claiming the school’s first Mountain West title at the 2012 conference championships Feb. 22-25, in Oklahoma City. Trailing by one point with one event left, the Broncos set a conference record to win the 400-yard freestyle relay and grab the team crown. Boise State won 10 events, including four relays, to dethrone defending-champion San Diego State, 747-742, in the closest team race in meet history. After just six years as a program, Boise State swimming and diving has won a conference title in half of its seasons in program history.

North’s third conference title in the 100 freestyle was coupled with gold in the 200 freestyle. She initially set the MW record in the 50 freestyle during prelims, only to see Boucher claim it as her own moments later. North finished runner-up to her teammate in the finals. She also set the school record in the 100-yard backstroke during a time trial at the conference meet. The senior duo helped the Broncos set three conference relay records and win four relay events at the meet as well.

Seniors Amber Boucher and Stephanie North each claimed six gold medals and one silver as they obliterated the Mountain West record book all week. Boucher was named the MW Swimmer of the Year and head coach Kristin Hill was named the MW Swimming Coach of the Year. Boucher’s honor made her a three-time conference swimmer of the year (twice in the WAC and once in the MW). She joins Kellen Moore (football) as the only student-athletes in Boise State history to be named conference player of the year three times in any sport. Boucher set all-time Mountain West records in the 50- and 200yard freestyles and the 100-yard butterfly at the meet. She earned gold in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Boucher’s 200 freestyle record came leading off the winning 800-yard freestyle relay team. She held the record in the 100-yard freestyle before North broke it to win the event at the championships as Boucher took silver.

Three Conference Championships

Seniors Stephanie North (left) and Amber Boucher (right) hold the conference championship trophy after each winning six gold medals and one silver at the 2012 MW Championships.

Swimming on two of those record-setting relays were freshmen Jessica Bottelberghe and Sydney Johansen. Bottelberghe and Johansen swam the first two legs of the 400-yard medley relay. Bottelberghe took the third leg of the title-winning 400 freestyle relay team and Johansen swam third on the 200-yard freestyle relay team that had its sights beyond the conference record.

Boise State traveled to Southern California for their winter training trip, including a duel against UCLA for the second-straight season. For the second year in a row, the Bruins handed the Broncos their only dual-meet loss. Boucher won two events and helped Boise State to a relay win, but it was not enough to overcome UCLA. The training trip concluded with a second-place finish at the San Diego Relays, checking in just behind the Bruins again.

Bronco History

All told, the Broncos set 13 school records and seven conference marks. Their four relay victories are tied for the most at a single Mountain West Championship, their 10 event titles are the most by a winning team and their 747 points are the third most in meet history. But it was about more than the top times and places. A total team effor brought home the hardware for Boise State. The Broncos earned 46 All-Mountain West honors and 14 of the 18 members of the scoring team were named all-conference.

The Broncos took second at the Rice Invitational behind Arkansas, the first time the Broncos went head-to-head with a team from the Southeastern Conference outside of the NCAA Championships. Boise State also finished runner-up at the Missouri Invitational in December, highlighted by Burnett’s school record on platform diving. The host Tigers finished just ahead of Boise State for the second-straight year, but the Broncos closed the gap from the previous season, cutting the final deficit by more than half. Sandwiched between those invitational meets was a duel victory against Seattle and the Wildcat Diving Invitational.

Season Review

Junior Christine Raininger touched the wall first and broke her own school record in the 400-yard individual medley to give Boise State six individual titles at the conference meet. Raininger, the 2010 WAC Champion in the same event, used steady times across all four strokes to build a lead and hang to win by more than half a second.

The regular season began with a season-opening win against in-state rival Idaho and a first-place finish at the Boise State Invitational against New Mexico and Seattle. The rest of the fall season was invitational-focused.

Student-Athletes

Hughey swam the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly races at the NCAA Championships after earning ‘B’ cuts in each at the MW Championships. She finished fifth and fourth, respectively, at the conference meet in those events. Hughey added an 11th-place finish in the 100 freestyle while helping the Broncos to titles in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

The accolades were not left to the swimmers. Boise State’s divers took another step forward in 2011-12, with all four members of the scoring team at the conference championships contributing points in all three events. Amanda Burnett, Ciera Cortney, Tana Loan and Lexi Pfeiffer combined to rack up 110 points at the MW Championships. At the 2011 WAC Championships, which had been the most successful to date, the divers tallied 26 points. Burnett and Cortney brought home bronze medals in the platform and one-meter events, respectively. The duo also advanced to the NCAA Zone Diving Championships for the second-consecutive year. Burnett, a redshirt senior, earned the Broncos’ highest finish at the zone meet taking ninth on the platform.

Staff

Johansen also enjoyed a breakout meet individually. She took gold in the 200-yard individual medley, silver in the 100-yard breaststroke and bronze in the 200-yard backstroke, setting school records in all three events. She also helped the 200-yard medley relay team to a school record. Johansen’s three individual times all met the NCAA provisional qualifying standard (B cuts), allowing her to compete in each of them at the national meet in addition to the relay.

Boise State 47th at the national meet. Quick Facts

A day after winning the 200 freestyle relay in record time, the team of Boucher, Stevie Hughey, Johansen and North returned to the water in a time trial. They managed to lower their time to 1:29.73, a mark that made them the 14th-fastest quartet in the country and the first relay team from Boise State or a member of the Mountain West to qualify for the NCAA Championships.

The Broncos’ 400 freestyle relay win at the Mountain West Championships was not only the decisive event in securing the trophy, it also locked up a second-consecutive undefeated season in the event. Boise State has won three-straight conference championships in the 400 freestyle relay and has not lost the event in any meet since Dec. 6, 2009, at the Missouri Invitational. Boucher and North finished their Bronco careers having swam on the 400 freestyle relay together 26 times, winning 21 times. That total includes a third-place finish at the 2009 Missouri Invitational behind Missouri and Arizona State and four losses as freshmen. The swimmers and divers also enjoyed another extremely successful year in the classroom. Always a strength of Hill’s teams, the Broncos’ academic work was most recognized in 2011-12. Burnett took the highest honor when she was named to the Capital One Academic All-America At-Large Second Team. She became the 23rd Academic All-American in Boise State history (for all sports),

and the first in the at-large category. As a team, Boise State was recognized by the College Swimming Coaches’ Association of America as a Scholar All-America Team during the fall and spring semesters. Boucher and North were named Scholar All-Americans by the CSCAA. Burnett, Cortney, Heather Harper and Emily Irvin earned honorable mention honors. Before the book was completely closed on the 2011-12 season, six Broncos put their talents on display at Olympic trials meets in their respective countries. Boucher, Harper, Heaney, Miller and North competed at the U.S. Olympic Trials. Raininger swam at the Canadian Olympic Trials. The trials, used to select each country’s Olympic roster in the sport of swimming, are competed in a 50-meter pool and require clocking time standards during the preceding quadrennial to be invited to the meet.

Bronco History

An innovator in the postseason bowl structure, the MW engineered many “firsts,” as league teams have participated in five inaugural bowl games (2000 Silicon Valley, 2001 New Orleans, 2002 San Francisco (Emerald), 2005 Poinsettia, 2006 New Mexico), as well as placing the first non-automatic-qualifying BCS team into a BCS bowl game with Utah’s appearance in the 2005 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.

Season Review

When the Mountain West officially began operations on July 1, 1999, the new league had in place a seven-year contract with ESPN, giving the broadcaster exclusive national television rights to MW football and men’s basketball, and three-year agreements to send the league’s football champion to the Liberty Bowl and a second team to the Las Vegas Bowl. Commissioner Craig Thompson also arranged a third bowl tie-in each of the first three seasons (1999 Motor City, 2000 Silicon Valley, 2001 New Orleans) before securing a four-year deal with the Emerald Bowl in San Francisco in 2002. Entering the 2012 season, the MW has four contracted bowl affiliations – the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas, San Diego Country Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl, Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl and Gildan New Mexico Bowl.

The Mountain West is noted for its geographic diversity. Some of the most beautiful terrain and landscapes in the nation can be found within Mountain West boundaries, including the majestic Rocky Mountain range, which borders four MW institutions (Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State and New Mexico). The high plains of Wyoming (elevation 7,220 feet – the highest Division I campus in the nation) contrast with the desert cities of Las Vegas and Reno, home to UNLV and Nevada, while Fresno State and San Diego State add a West coast influence with their locations in Central and Southern California. The inclusion of the Hawai‘i football program extends the Mountain West footprint to the beautiful islands in the Pacific Ocean. The Mountain West was conceived on May 26, 1998, when the presidents of eight institutions — Air Force, BYU, Colorado State, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah and Wyoming — decided to form a new NCAA Division I-A intercollegiate athletic conference. The split from a former 16-team conference reestablished continuity and stability among the membership within the new league and signaled the continuation of its tradition-rich, long-standing athletic rivalries. Three of the MW’s eight original members have been conference rivals since the 1960s (New Mexico, Wyoming and Colorado State), while San Diego State (1978) and Air Force (1980) were longtime members as well. UNLV and TCU entered the fold in 1996 and the Rebels continued as one of the original eight institutions that formed the MW in 1999. TCU re-joined the group with its first year of competition in the Mountain West in 2005-06. With conference realignment sweeping the nation in recent years, the MW has been proactive in addressing membership changes. Boise State University joined the Mountain West in 2011-12, followed by Fresno State and the University of Nevada on July 1, 2012. Also on July 1, 2012, the University of Hawai‘i became a football-only member of the Conference. On May 4, 2012, the Mountain West announced the additions of San Jose State University and Utah State University as full-time members effective July 1, 2013.

The Mountain West has marked several achievements over its first 13 years of existence, most notably becoming the first to establish a sports television network dedicated solely to an intercollegiate athletic conference (The Mtn.). The Mountain West also was the first to experiment with the coaches’ challenge in the college football instant replay system, and was the first non-automatic-qualifying BCS conference to participate in four BCS bowl games, winning three. Additionally, the Mountain West was the first conference to have a member institution with No. 1 overall picks in both the NFL and NBA drafts in the same year (Utah’s Alex Smith and Andrew Bogut, respectively in 2005). With San Diego State’s Stephen Strasburg claiming the No. 1 pick in the 2009 MLB Draft, the Mountain West is one of two conferences to have the No. 1 selection in each of the NFL, NBA and MLB drafts since the MW was founded in 1999. In 2011-12, the Mountain West was among the first conferences to implement a league-wide state-of-the art basketball instant replay system.
