WOMEN’S GOLF The Boise State Golf Indoor Practice Facility provides the men’s and women’s golf teams with an on-campus site to practice and improve their game. The indoor facility, which is located beneath Bronco Stadium, allows the studentathletes a convenient place to practice around their class schedules and travel arrangements. The practice facility features video equipment for players to record their swings so they my be broken down and analyzed via swing video. The indoor facility also provides an alternative practice site on cooler days.

Head Coach’s Profile

Nicole Bird is in her sixth season as the head coach of the Boise State women’s golf team, and the team has shown marked improvement since her arrival prior to the 2007-08 season.

Young finished in the top 25 in each of this past fall’s four tournaments, and is now fifth all-time on the Broncos’ career list with 16. Her eight-career top-10 finishes are second all-time at Boise State.

The Broncos won their first tournament title in nearly nine years with a victory at the 2008 Bronco Fall Invitational, and the fourth-place effort at the 2011 Western Athletic Conference Championships is tied for the third-best team finish at a conference tournament in school history.

In the classroom, the Broncos have combined for 12 conference all-academic selections and four NGCA AllAmerica Scholars. Additionally, three of her golfers were named Mountain West Scholar-Athlete Award recipients for 2011-12, one of the highest academic honors bestowed by the conference.

Bird’s Broncos will try to improve on that as the team embarks on its second season in the Mountain West in 2012-13. Bird brought in a trio of highly-touted freshmen for the 2012-13 campaign, and the group has not disappointed. The group ranked 16th-nationally in Golfstat’s Freshman Class Impact Rankings through the fall season, and the trio has meshed with a pair of seniors to produce one of the most successful fall seasons in recent memory. Boise State broke the school record for lowest singleround team score (291; +3) and three-round team score (893, +29) at the “Price’s Give ‘Em Five” Invitational (Oct. 8-10), and twice went an entire tournament without posting a round in the 80s. Boise State was the only team in the field to accomplish the feat at the Oregon State Invitational (Sept. 17-18). Several Broncos have been honored with postseason recognition under Bird. Iris Ocariza earned the team’s first all-conference accolade in three seasons, garnering second-team honors in 2009. Her scoring average of 76.7 that season was the third-lowest in school history, and her six top-25 finishes in 2008-09 are tied for the sixth-most in school history. Hayley Young earned second-team All-WAC accolades following the 2010-11 season, posting six top-25 finishes – tied for the sixth-most in school history – and recording four top-10 efforts, tied for the second-most by a Bronco all-time. Young set the school’s single-season scoring average record in 2010-11 (75.8), and posted the fourth-best mark in school history in 2011-12 (76.6). Jenna Leurquin wasn’t far behind last season, recording the 10th-best single-season mark all-time (77.5).

The team set the school record for highest singlesemester grade-point average with a 3.68 in the spring of 2012, and led all programs this fall with a 3.58. Bird joined Boise State after spending five seasons as an assistant coach at TCU. Her duties as assistant coach included aiding in recruiting, organizing day-today operations of the program and helping lead team practices and workouts. The Horned Frogs posted five-straight NCAA Championships appearances and registered five regular-season tournament victories during Bird’s tenure. The 2007 team won the MW Championship, and the program produced three All-America honorees in Catherine Matranga, Valentine Derrey and Brooke Tull. She also helped coach nine NGCA All-America Scholars, one Academic All-American and nine allconference honorees. Bird served as the assistant tournament director for the 2004 Conference-USA Women’s Golf Championships, as an intern with the American Junior Golf Association and as the AJGA’s Manager of Tournament Administration. A native of Edmond, Okla., Bird attended Western New Mexico University from 1996-98 before transferring to Centenary (1998-2000), where she graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in communication and professional writing. She and husband Steve were married during the summer of 2011.

Assistant Coach’s Profile

Dave Bartels is in his third year as an assistant coach with the Broncos after joining the program Jan. 10, 2011. Bartels serves as the program’s swing coach, assists in the daily mentoring of the Broncos and helps in recruiting. Professionally, Bartels is a 13-year member of the Rocky Mountain Section of the PGA. He has been one of the leading golf instructors in the Treasure Valley for the last 12 years, based out of Pierce Park Greens in Boise. Bartels is a native of Boise, attending Borah High School graduating from Boise State in 1994 with a bachelor’s degree in social science. Dave and wife Becky live in Boise.

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Boise State senior Hayley Young was in the top 20 after the first day of the Oregon State Invitational Sept. 17, the Broncos’ opening event of the 2012-13 season.

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Boise State senior women’s golfer Hayley Young finished tied for 25th at the season-opening Oregon State Invitational, Sept. 18.

Young followed an opening-round 72 (E) with a 4-over-par 76, and was in a four-way tie for 16th entering the final day.

Young finished at 11-over-par (72-76-79) at the par-72, 6,141yard Trysting Tree Golf Club. The finish gave her 13-career top25 finishes, which moved her into eighth place on Boise State’s all-time list.

Her two-round total of 148 (+4) at the par-72, 6,141-yard Trysting Tree Golf Club had her three strokes back of the top 10. Washington’s SooBin Kim led the tournament at 141 (-3). A pair of freshmen entered the final round in the hunt for top-25 finishes in their collegiate debuts. Samantha Martin was tied for 26th with a two-round total of 151 (76-75—151, +7), and McKenzie Ford was tied for 33rd with a 36-hole total of 152 (77-75—152, +8). Boise State was in eighth place in the 16-team field with a tworound total of 606 (+30), within nine strokes of the top five. Washington, the only team under-par, led the event with a 565 (-11). Senior Lori Harper (156, +7) and freshman Samantha Pless (157, +13) rounded out the Bronco contingent.

Freshman Samantha Martin and McKenzie Ford finished just outside the top 25 in their collegiate debuts. Martin concluded the tournament in a tie for 32nd (76-75-78—229, +13), two strokes back; while Ford finished in a tie for 36th (77-75-78— 230, +14), three strokes back. The Broncos finished in ninth place with a team score of 917 (+53). Washington won the event at 11-under (853), the only squad in the 16-team field under-par. The Huskies’ Charlotte Thomas took home medalist honors with a 5-under 211. Senior Lori Harper shot 77 (+5) during the final round, low score of the day for the Broncos. She finished with a 54-hole total of 233 (77-79-77, +17), and freshman Samantha Pless rounded out the Bronco contingent with a 235 (79-78-78, +19). Boise State was the only team in the field to post 15 rounds in the 70s.

AURORA, Ore. – A trio of Boise State women’s golfers were in the top 20 after the first two rounds of the Rose City Collegiate, Oct. 1. Boise State was tied for fifth place at the event, and was looking for its first top-five finish in nearly two years during the final round.

AURORA, Ore. – With two Broncos in the top 10 and three in the top 20, the Boise State women’s golf team posted its best team effort since 2008, finishing fourth at the Rose City Collegiate, Oct. 2.

Seniors Hayley Young and Lori Harper were tied for 12th after the tournament’s first 36 holes. Young shot 74-78 at the par-72, 6,080-yard Langdon Farms Golf Course, while Harper posted rounds of 78-74. The duo’s two-round total of 152 (+8) was just one stroke back of the top 10. Freshman Samantha Martin was just one stroke back of her senior teammates following rounds of 76 (+4) and 77 (+5), and entered the final round tied for 16th at 153 (+9). Boise State posted team scores of 310 (+22) and 307 (+19) during the first and second rounds, respectively. At 617 (+41) entering the final round, the Broncos were tied for fifth place with Long Beach State. The Broncos were just eight strokes back of third place, and just 10 strokes back of second-place Oregon State. Boise State was looking for its first top-five finish in a field of at least 10 teams since Oct. 25-26, 2010, when the team finished fifth at the Memphis Fall Invitational. The team’s last finish in the top three came nearly four years ago, when Boise State tied for first at the 2008 Bronco Fall Invitational. Seattle led the 13-team field at 594 (+18), and the Redhawks’ Clare Sorenson led individually at 143 (-1). Rounding out the Bronco contingent were freshmen Sammie Pless (82-78—160, +16) and McKenzie Ford (86-79—165, +21).

Seniors Hayley Young and Lori Harper tied for eighth place at the par-72, 6,080-yard Langdon Farms Golf Club, and freshman Samantha Martin finished tied for 18th. The Broncos posted the lowest team score on the final day (302, +14) to conclude the three-round event with a 919 (+55). Boise State finished just seven strokes back of tournamentchampion Cal State Fullerton (912, +48). “The ladies played really solid this week,” head coach Nicole Bird said. “It’s nice to have someone step up when someone else has an off round, and they all know they can count on one another. They just played one shot at a time and really stayed committed. It was fun to watch!” The fourth-place team finish was the best by a Bronco women’s golf team since tying for first place at the 2008 Bronco Fall Invitational. Young and Harper each carded a final-round 2-over 74 to finish at 226 (+10) for the tournament. The finish gave Young seven-career top 10s, tied for secondmost in school history. She had finished in the top 25 in each of the season’s first two tournaments, and her 14-career top 25s were the eighth-most all-time at Boise State. For Harper, the tie for eighth place marked the best tournament finish of her career. Martin posted a final-round 78 (+6) to finish in a tie for 18th at 231 (+15), her first-career top-25 finish. Freshmen Sammie Pless (237, +21) and McKenzie Ford (242, +26) rounded out the scoring for the Broncos.

Martin fired a career-low even-par 72 at the 6,258-yard New Mexico State University Golf Course. After registering three bogeys through her first five holes, Martin birdied three of her final 13 en route to the best single-round score of her young career.

Young shot 74 (+2) at the par-72, 6,258-yard New Mexico State University Golf Course, and was among a contingent of golfers tied for 11th with a 36-hole score of 147 (+3). She entered the final round one stroke back of the top 10.

Boise State fired a 3-over 291 in the final round, moving into fifth place as a team at the par-72, 6,258-yard New Mexico State University Golf Course. The final-round score bested the previous mark of 294, set in the second round of the Bobcat Desert Classic, March 9, 2004.

She trailed tournament-leader Yupaporn Kawinpakorn of Kansas by three strokes entering Tuesday’s second round. Young finished day one with a 73 (+1), and was amongst a group of seven individuals tied for 10th place. The Broncos were tied for seventh place with Nebraska following an opening-round team score of 301 (+13). The day-one score was two strokes back of tournament-host New Mexico State, and four strokes back of the top five. Boise State led Cincinnati and BYU by two strokes, while Idaho led the event at 290 (+2). Rounding out the scoring for the Broncos were senior Lori Harper and freshmen McKenzie Ford and Sammie Pless, who each shot 78 (+6). The trio was just three strokes back of the top 25 entering Tuesday’s second round.

Martin followed her opening-round even-par 72 with a 78 (+6) in the second round, and was tied for 25th at 150 (+6). Fellow freshman Sammie Pless carded a career-low 73 (+1) in the second round, the lowest score by a Bronco on the day. Pless moved 18 spots up the leaderboard following the performance, and was tied for 30th with a two-round total of 151 (+7), one stroke back of the top 25. Boise State posted a team score of 301 (+13) for the secondstraight day, and was in eighth place with a 602 (+26). The Broncos were two strokes back of a sixth-place tie between Nebraska and BYU, and seven strokes back of the top five. Kansas led the tournament at 583 (+7). Rounding out the scoring for the Broncos were freshman McKenzie Ford (78-76—154, +10) and senior Lori Harper (7879—157, +13).

The Broncos finished the three-day tournament with a schoolrecord team total of 893 (+29), three strokes better than the previous record of 896, set at the Heather Farr Invitational, Sept. 29-30, 2008. Senior Hayley Young notched her second-straight top-10 finish, posting a final-round 72 (E) to move into a tie for seventh place. Her three-round total of 219 (73-74-72; +3) was a career best. The finish marked her eighth-career top 10 finish, and gave her sole possession of second place on Boise State’s all-time list. Marie Beasley (1999-2003) held the school’s standard. Freshmen Samantha Martin and Sammie Pless each tied for 15th with 54-hole totals of 222 (+6), giving the Broncos three individuals in the top 20 for the second-straight tournament. Pless fired a career-low 1-under 71 in the final round, notching her first-career top-25 finish (78-73-71). She moved 33 places up the leaderboard following her final two rounds. Martin (7278-72) posted her second-straight top-25 effort with her finish, which included career-low even-par 72s in both the first and final rounds. Freshman McKenzie Ford (78-76-76—230, +14) and senior Lori Harper (78-79-78) rounded out the scoring for the Broncos, who were one of just four teams in the 13-team field not to record a score of 80-or-higher. The Broncos were the only team in the field to accomplish the same feat earlier this season at the Oregon State Invitational.

Young, playing in her home state, posted rounds of 75-74-77, finishing at 226 (+10) at the par-72, 6,228-yard Leilehua Golf Course. The senior finished in the top 25 in each of the Broncos’ four tournaments during the fall, giving her 16-career such efforts – tied for the fifth-most all-time at Boise State (Daniela Wall-Thompson; 1992-95).

Playing in her home state, Young was looking for her thirdstraight top-10 finish during Wednesday’s final round, and her fourth top-25 effort in as many tournaments to start the season. She was just five strokes back of the tournament leader. Freshman Samantha Martin was a stroke back of her senior teammate after posting back-to-back rounds of 75 (+3). She was tied for 12th place with a two-round total of 150 (+6), and would be looking for a third-straight top-25 finish. Fellow freshman McKenzie Ford and senior Lori Harper were each one stroke back of the top 25, tied for 26th at 9-over-par (153). The duo each shot 76 (+4) in the first round, and 77 (+5) in the second. Ford was on pace to notch her best finish as a Bronco, and Harper was looking for her second top-25 finish of the fall season. The Broncos were in fifth place as a team after shooting backto-back rounds of 302 (+14). At 604 (+28) for the tournament, Boise State was just nine strokes back of a first-place tie between Toledo and Florida International. Boise State was also just seven strokes back of third-place Washington State, and two strokes back of fourth-place UC Irvine. Freshman Sammie Pless rounded out the scoring for the Broncos, shooting 156 (+12; 80-76) on the day.

Martin notched her third-straight top-25 finish after shooting 7575-76 (226, +10). Martin and fellow freshman McKenzie Ford carded the lowest scores of the day for the Broncos, each shooting 76 (+4). Ford recorded the best finish of her young Bronco career, finishing tied for 26th, one stroke back of the top 25 (76-77-76—229, +13). The Broncos finished in seventh place as a team, just seven strokes back of the top five. After back-to-back rounds of 302 (+14) on the opening day of the tournament, Boise State closed with a 307 (+19) to end at 911 (+47) – the team’s second-lowest score of the fall season. Rounding out the scoring for Boise State were freshman Sammie Pless (80-76-78—234, +18) and senior Lori Harper (76-77-85—238, +22).
