2012 Boise State Cross Country WHERE THE BRONCOS TRAIN... THE BOISE TRAIL SYSTEM
MILITARY RESERVE This 460 acre natural area is named for Fort Boise and the associated military maneuvers that were performed here between the 1860’s and 1940’s. The area served several purposes, including the staging of gunnery practice into the hills above. After the military halted its operations, the community recognized the importance of this area and the Boise Front for recreation and wildlife values. Boise City acquired title to the property from the Federal government for “recreation and public purposes”. It is managed as a recreation and wildlife reserve, with human activities allowed in ways that do not detract from the natural values. CAMELSBACK/HULLS GULCH RESERVE These two city reserves are popular and busy. Hulls Gulch Reserve was spared from development in the early 1990’s with the help of concerned citizens and local and federal funding. With Hulls Creek as the back bone, wildlife find the area to their liking as well. The ponds at the end of 9th St. were designed for flood control but also are a magnet for birds and other wildlife. The large pond is fenced to give the wildlife an area that is undisturbed by people and pets. Camels Back is undergoing a “face lift” with restoration efforts. Nearly 3 miles of trail are available on the hill while an effort is underway to close and rehabilitate the steep hill climbs that have been eroding. The two rare plants found in the reserve are also being protected by these efforts.
CASTLE ROCK AND TABLE ROCK RESERVES These two geological landmarks located near the Old Idaho Penitentiary are steeped in history and beauty. Native Americans consider this area sacred. Native plant populations are found clinging to the slopes around Table Rock, providing a glimpse of what the entire Boise Front may have looked like at one time. Old quarry roads and the Table Rock tram route are now used as trails that provide a wide range of experiences and trail difficulties. The views aren’t half bad either. UPPER 8TH STREET TRAILS The network of trails in the upper 8th Street area were built specifically for Off Highway Vehicles, (OHV’s) with access from the 8th Street Parking lot. The Hulls Gulch Interpretive Trail is in this area as well and is a Pedestrian Only trail. With this mix of trail uses it is important to respect others and share the trails.

2012 Boise State University Women’s Cross Country Team
2012 SEASON PREVIEW... Head coach J.W. Hardy and distance coach Brad Wick welcome over 45 men and women to the 2012 roster. One-third of the combined gender roster includes newcomers, adding young talent to an already talented group of returners. “Both our men’s and women’s teams are by far the deepest squads we’ve ever had,” said Wick. “Both squads will have at least 10 runners that have a truly legitimate chance of being one of our top-five runners.”

As mentioned the Broncos kick off their season on Sept. 8 at the Roger Curran Invitational, however they see their first big national competition on Sept. 29 at the 27th Annual Roy Griak Invitational in St. Paul, Minn. Competing as a split squad in their second weekend of competition, additional Broncos will travel west to race at the 38th Annual Charles Bowles Invitational in Salem, Ore., on Sept. 29.
The Bronco men return three all-conference honorees, including Drew O’donoghueMcDonald who was both a 2010 and 2011 honoree. Jeff Howard and Allan Schroeder return to the team after a season away from cross country. The pair earned honors in the Western Athletic Conference in 2010.
Opening up October the Broncos host their only meet of the season, the Boise State Invitational, at Ann Morrison Park. The meet is slated for 12 noon on Sat., Oct. 6. One week later the Broncos face a second large competition of the season at the 2012 PreNational Invitational held on the NCAA Championships course in Louisville, Ky., on Oct. 13. The final regular season meet will give the Broncos a feel of what the championships will be like and will help turn the Broncos’ focus on postseason competition.
Boise State’s women return four all-conference honorees with Emma Bates leading the way with honors from the 2010 and 2011 seasons. Tessa Murray and Marisa VanderMalle join her as 2011 Mountain West honorees, while Alyssa Boucher returns as a 2010 WAC honoree.
The Mountain West Championships will be the first postseason meet, held on Oct. 26 in Las Vegas, Nev. In August, the Bronco women earned a second-place preseason ranking in the Mountain West, while the men earned a third-place spot. Last season the women placed third and the men were fourth.
The Broncos’ 2012 schedule proves to be a tough one with two major regular-season competitions, two local meets and one solid Western states competition. Those five meets will play a major role in preparing the Broncos for the postseason.
The Broncos will continue their postseason in Seattle, Wash., at the 2012 NCAA West Region Championships on Nov. 10. Currently both the men and women hold No. 11 rankings in the preseason West Regional standings.
“Our goal this season is to try to win the conference titles on both sides,” said Wick. “We want to do well through regionals and try to put ourselves in a position to make a run at competing at the national meet.”
The 2012 NCAA National Championships cap the schedule on Nov. 17 in Louisville, Ky. The University of Louisville will hold the championship at EP Tom Sawyer State Park in their first time hosting the event.

2012 Boise State Cross Country
J. W. H A R DY
HEAD COACH OF TRACK AND FIELD/CROSS COUNTRY FOURTH SEASON
J.W. Hardy enters his fourth season as the head track and field / cross country coach at Boise State University. In just three years of coaching at Boise State, Hardy has guided his teams to an assortment of honors and awards. The most noted honor came recently with the crowing of Kurt Felix as the 2012 NCAA Division I National Decathlon Champion. Felix earned first-team All-American honors with the win, helping to secure his 2012 Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year and 2012 MW Men’s Student-Athlete of the Year honors. Felix went on to represent Grenada in the 2012 London Olympics in the decathlon. Additionally, Hardy has fronted a Bronco coaching staff that has guided its student-athletes to 10 NCAA national meet qualifying spots and collected eight NCAA All-American honors in three years. Indoors Felix added second-team honors in the long jump (2012) and the heptathlon (2011) to his 2012 decathlon honors. Mele Vaisima also garnered first-team honors in the weight throw (2012) and Zach Arnos earned honors in the triple jump (2010). Outdoors Emma Bates earned second-team honors in the 5,000-meters (2012), while Alex Nelson was a second-team honoree in the hammer throw (2011) and Pontus Thomee in the javelin (2010). Hardy’s staff has also lead 38 student-athletes to the NCAA First Round in multiple events. Felix continued earning national honors with the 2011 US Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Indoor Track and Field West Region Athlete of the Year, while Jeff Howard joined him in 2011 earning a USTFCCCA Cross Country All-Region nod.
At the conference level, Hardy has already steered Boise State to two championship titles, the 2010 Western Athletic Conference Men’s Cross Country team title, earning him WAC Coach of the Year honors, and the 2011 WAC Indoor Men’s Track and Field team title (co-champions with Utah State). In addition his teams have collected three runner-up titles under his reign. Individually there have been 38 conference championship titles earned under Hardy, as well as 253 allconference honors and 39 athletes of the week. Individual conference honors during Boise State’s Hardy era include: Kurt Felix as the 2012 Mountain West Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Meet and 2012 MW Men’s Indoor and Outdoor High Point Performer. Felix was also named the 2010 and 2011 WAC Men’s Indoor High Point Performer, the 2010 WAC Men’s Outdoor High Point Performer and 2010 WAC Men’s Outdoor Field Performer of the Year. In 2012 Vaisima was named the MW Women’s Athlete of the Meet. Rolando Trammel garnered honors in 2011 sweeping the WAC Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Meet and High Point Performer awards. Zach Arnos rounds out the group after earning the 2010 WAC Men’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Meet. Furthermore, five student-athletes have been crowned conference Freshman of the Year, including: Emma Bates (2011 WAC Women’s Cross Country), Vince Hamilton (2012 MW Men’s Cross Country), Jeff Howard (2010 WAC Men’s Indoor), Alexi Morton (2011 WAC Women’s Indoor) and Kevin Rosaaen (2010 WAC Men’s Cross Country). Hardy and his staff have also coached the Broncos to 39 Boise State all-time top-three marks and 13 school records. Just as strong in the classroom, Hardy’s Broncos have collected 210 conference all-academic honors, five USTFCCCA AllAcademic individual honors and one USTFCCCA All-Academic women’s team honor. Additional academic standouts include Carly Gerard, who was named a 2012 Boise State Top-Ten Scholar as well as a 2011 CoSIDA All-District Student-Athlete.
Eleni Kafourou was named as a 2010 CoSIDA All-District First Team selection, advancing her to a CoSIDA All-America thirdteam selection that same season. Prior to Boise State, Hardy served as the head track and field coach / director of cross country at Northern Arizona University for five seasons. Taking over the head coaching duties in the fall of 2004, Hardy guided the Lumberjacks to unprecedented heights. Sixteen (16) times his teams won Big Sky Conference Championships, including five during his first season when the Lumberjacks won the 2008 men’s and women’s cross country titles, the 2009 men’s and women’s indoor championships and the 2009 men’s outdoor championship. NAU just missed a sixth league title during the 2008-09 season when his women’s outdoor team placed second. At the national level in 2008-09, the NAU men’s cross country team placed sixth at the NCAA Championships while his women’s team finished 23rd. At the 2009 NCAA Outdoor Championships the team placed 32nd. Three other times his teams recorded a top-10 finish at nationals. Prior to his coaching career at NAU, Hardy coached the sprints and horizontal jumps at Alhambra High School. During his three years at Alhambra, the team won two division titles, finished second at the Arizona state championships and had five athletes receive all-state honors. Hardy also coached local football standout, Eric Johnson, to a state long jump title as well as a second-place finish in the 100-meter dash and 4x100meter relay. Johnson spent five years in the National Football League with the Oakland Raiders. Former Lumberjacks Francis St. Paul and Clarence Moore also add to Hardy’s list of student-athletes who had careers in the NFL. Both men contributed to conference performances

in the sprints during their collegiate careers. St. Paul provided speed and versatility in the efforts of the St. Louis Rams 2001 Super Bowl Championship. Moore played four seasons with the Baltimore Ravens after being drafted by the team in the sixth round in 2004. As a student-athlete, Hardy was a top NAU sprinter from 198993 under former head coach Ron Mann. He was a three-time NCAA All-American and a seven-time conference champion. Hardy is also a member of two relay teams that still hold Big Sky Conference records. Hardy was also an individual conference champion in the 400-meter dash as well as a two-time champion as a member of the 4x100-meter relay team. During the four years Hardy competed at NAU, the team won seven of eight possible team titles. Hardy earned his bachelor’s degree from Northern Arizona in advertising in 1993. He and his wife, Amy, have a 21-year old daughter, Kennedy who is attending the University of Arizona, and an eight-year old son, Traevin.

He led his men to a Mountain West fourth-place finish in 2011, a third-place WAC finish in 2009 as well as a second-place finish in 2008. His women placed third at the 2011 MW Championships, as well as, fourth at the 2010 WAC Championships, sixth in 2009 and fifth in 2008. Overall Wick has coached five first-team all-conference honorees and 13 second-team cross country honorees. In 2010 both the men’s and women’s teams went on to compete at the NCAA Regional Championships with Jeff Howard earning a 17th-place finish, making him a USTFCCCA All-Region Honoree. In 2011 the Bronco women placed 12th at the regional meet, while the men placed 14th.
On the track, Wick has directed his athletes to many successes, including Jeff Howard as the 2010 WAC Indoor Track and Field Freshman of the Year after winning the 3000m title. Under Wick’s guidance his runners have captured eight individual conference titles including his most recent protégé, Emma Bates, who was crowned the 2012 MW Indoor 3000m and outdoor 5000m champion. Kayleen McDowell also collected two titles under Wick’s guidance, indoor and outdoor 800m titles in 2009. Sawyer Bosch picked up two conference titles winning the 3000m in 2009 and the 3000m steeplechase in 2011, while Caleb Cazier won the 2009 indoor 800m title and Howard the 3000m title in 2010. In total, Wick has coached his distance athletes to 64 allconference honors during the indoor and outdoor track seasons. In 2012 he coached his first Bronco to an NCAA AllAmerica honor, guiding Bates to a 12th-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 5000m. Out of the seven Broncos who have earned 10 NCAA First Round qualifying spots over Wick’s four years at Boise State, Bates was the first Bronco to qualify for the NCAA National Championships.
