2012 SEASON PREVIEW

A LOOK AHEAD The 2012 Boise State gymnastics season is just around the corner and the team of 16 student-athletes and their coaches are setting their goals high: to have the school’s most successful season yet. Twelve of the 2012 team members return from one of the best seasons in school history, while four very talented freshmen enter the mix.

independent. “We can be more flexible, branch out with new challenges that we couldn’t fit into our schedule before.”

(Feb. 4), at the Chicago Style Invite (Feb. 10), at Oregon State (Feb. 24) and at Southern Utah (March 16).

“Amy is a ball of fire, a powerhouse,” said Bird. “She really is the total package.”

SENIORS Helping to lead the Broncos through the challenging schedule are four strong-willed and talented seniors, Chelsee Apple, Cristy Dahlquist, Amy Glass and Lindsay Kazandjian.

Resnick added, “Amy is a once in a lifetime athlete to coach. It’s a privilege to work with her.”

“Our team is trying to build on each previous year’s successes,” said co-head coach Neil Resnick. “If we continue to improve, it would likely land us in the [nation’s] top-12 this season and earn us a trip to the NCAA Championships as a team for the first time.”

A few of those new challenges include facing four top-25 ranked teams from the 2011 final season rankings. In likely their toughest regular-season meet of 2012, the Broncos will take on UCLA, who finished 2011 at No. 2, Illinois (No. 11) and Missouri (just out of the top-25) at the Chicago Style Invitational on Feb. 10 in Chicago, Ill. The Broncos also have scheduled a tough season opener in Boise’s Taco Bell Arena against Washington, who finished No. 18 last season. They will face a fourth ranked team in Oregon State, who was No. 8 last year, on Feb. 24 in Corvallis, Ore.

The Broncos, who finished the 2011 season ranked No. 13 and missed a shot at the national meet as a team by .025, are continually working to better themselves daily in hopes of reaching those goals.

In addition to top ranked teams on the 2012 schedule, the Broncos have increased their number of home meets to six this season, including a season-ending home meet against Brigham Young University.

“We have a team motto, ‘we make school history every year’”, said co-head coach Tina Bird. “We want to pick up where we left off a year ago and climb higher.”

“With more home meets, it gives our fans more of an opportunity to see us,” said Resnick. “And now we’ve built in a rotating dual meet each year with BYU, a good regional opponent, for fans to enjoy.

Helping to make Boise State a top nationally ranked team are the opponents they face, forcing the Broncos to push everyday in the gym. This season will have some new ventures with the Broncos competing independently and out of a conference for the first time since 1994. “Now this allows us to adjust our schedule to face top teams in the country,” Resnick explains the positive side of being

The Broncos’ six home meets are each duals, including opponents: Washington (Jan. 13), Sacramento State (Jan. 20), San Jose State (Feb. 17), Utah State (March 2), California (March 9) and BYU (March 24). Boise State also adds five regular-season away meets, including: at Utah State with Southern Utah (Jan. 27), at BYU 4

Apple has fought back after suffering a second seasonending injury in 2011, hoping to make an impact for the Broncos on the uneven bars. “Chelsee is the ultimate kid in the gym,” said Resnick. “She is a leader, a hard worker and relentless. She worked really hard this summer to come back and is setting herself up to be in the bar lineup.” Dahlquist has been a balance beam and floor exercise specialist through each of her years at Boise State, working hard for a spot in the lineup on each event. “Cristy is a great kid,” said Bird. “She truly is a model athlete, working hard in the gym and in her class work. She is a steadfast athlete that comes to the gym everyday with a great attitude and knows what she needs to do every day.” Glass will be the Broncos sole returning all-around competitor this season after having her most successful season yet in 2011. She was one of two Broncos to qualify for the NCAA National Championships individually and became only the fifth all-arounder in school history to go to nationals.

BOISE STATE UNIVERSITY

Kazandjian brings her talents on bars, beam and floor for the Broncos, serving as a consistent member of each of the lineups in her past three seasons. “Lindsay is a ‘journeyman’,” said Resnick. “She is constantly on that journey to get better, to keep plugging away at something and keep making strides. She has been a big part of our team’s transition to a nationally ranked team.” JUNIORS Four juniors join the upperclassmen ranks in 2012 with Hailey Gaspar, Lacee Lang, Brittany Potvin-Green and Erin Wippermann adding talent and experience to the roster. Gaspar is one of the top returning Broncos on vault this season and will look to continue to make a big impact on beam and floor as she has done in the past. “Hailey is naturally talented and physically gifted,” said Bird. Resnick added, “she is our go-to person. The one we want to ‘have the ball at the end of the game’; a clutch competitor.” Lang trains on beam and was a big contributor in the beam lineup last season.

2012 SEASON PREVIEW

Lindsay Kazandjian

“Lacee is diligent,” said Bird. “She knows what she needs to do each day and she fought her way into the lineup last season where she became a key competitor for us. The coaches expect her to contribute even more this season.” Potvin-Green has also been a key competitor in multiple events, making an impact on vault, bars and floor. In 2011 she was a member of the lineup on each event for much of the season. “Brittany is poised for a breakout year,” said Bird. “She had a fantastic summer of practice and we expect her to compete in the all-around this year.” “Brittany‘s physical ability plus her level of experience equals a breakout year,” added Resnick. Wippermann will focus as a bars and beam specialist in 2012, embarking on her first fully healthy season. “Erin has been a surprise for us,” said Resnick. “She exemplifies the walk-ons and continually comes into the gym, gets better and is a physically strong athlete. She is poised to be in the lineup on two events this season.” SOPHOMORES Kelsey Black, Alessandra Cinfio, Bekah Gher and Amanda Otuafi are a young and talented group of sophomores, bringing more experience to one of the best teams in school history.

Lacee Lang

Black was a key competitor on vault, bars and floor during the 2012 season and will continue to make an impact in those areas, while adding beam to the mix. “Kelsey has a great attitude and improves daily with her hard work,” said Resnick. “She is an extremely talented gymnast who really enjoys what she does. She is a happy person who has a lot of sunshine in her.”

Amanda Otuafi

Brittany Potvin-Green

“Amanda has really stepped up to a leadership role this year,” said Bird. “We are really excited to see what this season brings for her, especially with the opportunity to compete in three events.” FRESHMEN Four freshmen join the Bronco mix adding great depth and aptitude to an already gifted roster.

Cinfio looks to continue to contribute on bars, beam and floor after competing on beam in two meets and in exhibitions on the other events last season.

“This is the first time we have had three kids in the freshmen class capable of competing in the all-around their first year,” explained Resnick. “That adds great depth to our team.”

“Ala is blooming,” exclaimed Bird. “She has made a huge impact this fall on beam. She has built up some experience from last year and is looking to be a part of the lineup this season.”

Caitlin Mann joins the Broncos from Tucson, Ariz., where she trained at Tumbleweeds Gymnastics Club. An overall talent, Mann could become an all-around athlete from the start for Boise State.

Gher returns as the school’s first NCAA national qualifier on balance beam in 2011. Not only was she a major factor on beam, but also contributed on vault and bars.

“Caitlin is a beautiful gymnast,” said Bird. “She is very artistic, has pretty lines and is vying for a spot in the all-around.”

“Bekah has had her first national experience,” said Resnick. “This is an experience she can really use to build on and now she knows what it will take to get herself and her team back to that meet.” Otuafi was a vault specialist in 2011, but will look to become a three-event athlete in 2012.

Kelsey Morris is another all-around talent, joining the Broncos from Snohomish, Wash., where she trained at Leading Edge Gymnastics. “Kelsey has been a big surprise,” said Resnick. “We recruited her for vault and bars and now she looks to be a possible allaround athlete for us. She is the most coachable in the gym and has made huge strides from that.”

Erica Oswalt is a U.S. Junior Olympic (J.O.) National Team member and is the only Bronco to ever have a skill named after her, “the Oswalt” on balance beam. The freshman out of Henderson, Nev. (Desert Gymcats) will be a competitor on vault, beam and floor this season. “Erica is unique,” said Resnick. “She is skilled in each of her events and is looking to crack the lineup in any or all three this season.” Ciera Perkins is the second freshman who was a former member of the U.S. J.O. National Team (joining Oswalt and junior Hailey Gaspar as the only Broncos with that honor). Perkins looks to be an immediate impact in the all-around as well, adding great strength to the team. “Ciera is a powerhouse,” said Bird. “She is unbelievably explosive and we really enjoy working with her. She will be a contender for us on all four events.” With a solid foundation of talented juniors and seniors, as well as adding gifted sophomores who now boast the element of experience to the team, the Broncos welcome a solid class of freshmen. The 16 student-athletes will now focus on their schedule of 11 regular-season meets and two post-season. They look forward to a tough season of opponents, a new beginning of no conference title to chase, and the goal of sending Boise State to the national meet as a team for the first time.

2011 SENIORS

2011 SEASON REVIEW

Mallory Dziawura

The 2011 Boise State gymnastics season was another one for the record books, finishing the season with their highest national ranking ever, scoring some of the best marks in school history, breaking school records, winning a conference title and nearly advancing to the NCAA National Championships as a team for the first time. Finishing the season with a No. 13 rank, the Broncos had one of their best ranked seasons in school history. Not only was their final ranking a program best, but the team floated up to the No. 11 spot twice during the season, their highest midseason rankings ever. Along with successful team rankings, individually the Broncos ranked well among the nation’s best. Three Broncos ended their season with top-20 national marks in various events. Redshirt junior Amy Glass had two top-20 final rankings, sitting at No. 12 in the all-around and No. 13 on balance beam. Glass’ journey to those spots were exciting throughout the season, including a visit to the No. 1 spot on beam on Feb. 14 and a No. 4 spot in the all-around on Jan. 24. Senior Hannah Redmon also ended the season with two top-20 rankings, sitting at No. 17 on the uneven bars and No. 11 on floor exercise, an event she was ranked as high as No. 6 on Feb. 28. Sophomore Hailey Gaspar also ended the season with a top-20 spot, sitting at No. 13 on vault. She reached as high as No. 5 in the event on Feb. 14. As a team, the Broncos earned some of the best marks in school history, including a tie for the school record in team

score (197.050) on Mar. 13 at Sacramento State. The school record was one of six top-25 team scores they earned during the 2011 season. On vault they were very successful as a team as well, earning four top-10 marks. Their top vault mark was 49.375, good for No. 2 in school history. On bars they had one mark in the top-10, sitting in a tie for No. 7 (49.250). Their final top-10 mark of the season came on floor where they earned a score of 49.450, good for a No. 8 spot. Individually, Glass set two more overall season school records, earning the most single season wins in the all-around (9) and the most beam wins in a single season (7). Glass also earned four top-25 all-around marks in Bronco history and moved to No. 2 on the all-time career all-around wins list. She also moved into the career wins list on vault at No. 9 with seven career wins, as well as moving to No. 4 on the career beam wins list (9). Redmon also left her career at Boise State with a school record of 21 career wins on floor, including five during the 2011 season, good for No. 4 in season wins. She also earned a No. 9 all-around score of 39.50 during the season, moved to No. 2 in career vault wins (19) and moved to No. 5 in career bars wins (12) after earning six wins during the 2011 season, good for No. 3. Gaspar also made a move in the record books, earning four season wins on vault, good for No. 10 and earning two top-10 all-time marks on vault. On beam, two Broncos joined Glass in the career beam wins category, with senior Kelsey Lang moving to the No. 5 spot (8) and junior Lindsay Kazandjian moving to No. 8 with six wins.

In the postseason, the Broncos earned their third Western Athletic Conference championship title and second regular season title in 2011, their final season with the conference. There Glass was crowned the WAC Gymnast of the Year after a successful season, including her 2011 WAC vault title. Redmon was also crowned WAC champion, earning hers on bars. The Broncos earned nine All-WAC honors with Glass being named to the first-team on vault and Redmon the first-team on bars. Redmon also made first-team on vault and floor, as well as second-team in the all-around. Gaspar was a first-team honoree on vault and floor, while Brittany Potvin-Green and Kelsey Lang earned second-team honors on vault and beam, respectively. Glass had the No. 6 all-time best vault mark at a conference meet (9.90), while Lang had a No. 10 mark on beam (9.875). Moving on in the postseason, the Broncos had their most successful NCAA Regional Championship meet, missing a chance to go to the NCAA National Championships for the first time as a team by only .025 points. The team earned a score of 196.40, good for third place and a school record regional meet score. They also set a school record for regional meet competitions on bars (49.125) and earned the secondbest regional scores in school history on vault (49.075), beam (49.025) and floor (49.175). Individually, Glass and freshman Bekah Gher punched tickets to the NCAA National Championships to compete in the allaround and on beam, respectively, both earning their first trip to the meet. Glass earned her trip after placing fourth in the allaround, while Gher became the second Bronco ever to win a

regional event title, advancing her to the national meet. Glass scored the second best regional all-around score in school history (39.275), while Gher tied a school record of 9.90 on beam. Redmon also set a pair of school records (9.90 on floor and 9.90 on bars) but did not place high enough at the regional meet to advance to nationals. Glass and Gher were two of only seven Broncos to ever advance to the national meet, Glass the fifth all-arounder and Gher the first on beam for Boise State. There Glass placed in a tie for 19th in the all-around with the third-best nation allaround score in school history (39.075). She also set a school best of 9.875 on vault at nationals (17th place), a school best of 9.850 on floor (16th place), was No. 6 in school history on bars (9.750, 78th place) and tied for No. 6 on beam (9.60). Gher tied Glass’ score of 9.60 on beam to tie for the No. 66 spot overall. Looking back at the season, the Broncos collected seven WAC Gymnast of the Week honors, seven WAC Specialist of the Week honors, one WAC Gymnast of the Year, two WAC individual champions titles, WAC team champion titles, one NCAA North Central Region champion and two NCAA national qualifiers. In addition, the Broncos showed their successes away from the competition venue with Mallory Dziawura, Gaspar, Kazandjian, Kelsey Lang, Lacee Lang, Amanda Otuafi, Potvin-Green, Redmon and Katie Tuller each earning WAC All-Academic Team honors. Dziawura, Gaspar, Tuller, Kelsey Lang, Chelsee Apple and Erin Wippermann were also honored as NACGC/W Scholar Athletes

MEET THE COACHES

MEET THE COACHES 2008 & 2009 WAC CO-HEAD COACH OF THE YEAR 2008 WEST REGION CO-HEAD COACH OF THE YEAR 82-24 (.774) RECORD (4 SEASONS) In 2010 Bird and Resnick guided their team to the first-ever WAC regular season title, while also placing second at the post-season WAC Championship meet. The pair guided the Broncos to their third-straight NCAA Regional appearance where the team recorded the best team vault score at any 2010 regional championship meet in the nation. Their score of 49.575 not only led the nation that week, but also set a new Boise State school record on the event. The coaching duo also had their first NCAA national qualifier while under their reins with Hannah Redmon competing on vault and floor at the national meet.

Tina Bird CO-HEAD COACH FIFTH SEASON

Co-head coach Tina Bird enters her fifth season at the helm of the Boise State gymnastics team. Along with co-head coach Neil Resnick, the duo has compiled an 82-24 record in their four seasons heading up the Boise State program. In their most recent year Bird and Resnick led their team to Western Athletic Conference regular season and championship titles, as well as a third-place finish at the 2011 NCAA North Central Regional. The pair is right on the cusp of pushing their team into the nation’s elite, missing a chance to qualify for the first time as a team to a national championship by only .025. In 2011 Bird and Resnick had one of the best squads in program history, tying a school record team score of 197.050 on March 13 and finishing the season ranked 13th, the highest ever for Boise State. They went on to guide their team to a school record regional score of 196.400 three weeks later. The Broncos also earned five additional all-time top-25 scores in school history and collected four program top-10 team scores on vault, as well as one on bars and one on floor. For the first time under their leadership, Bird and Resnick produced two NCAA National individual qualifiers in the same season in Amy Glass and Bekah Gher. Glass was the first all-around qualifier since 2005, while Gher became the first Bronco ever to qualify on beam.

In 2009 Bird and Resnick steered the team to their second-straight WAC team championship as well as a berth to the NCAA Regionals. There the Broncos finished third, the best finish at the time by a Bronco team. The Broncos recorded four team scores that landed in the all-time top-25 team scores in school history. Along with leading the team to a very successful season, Bird, along with Resnick, garnered their second-straight WAC Co-Head Coach of the Year honor. In her first season as co-head coach Bird helped guide the Broncos to a 20-6 season including a WAC team championship as well as a fourth place NCAA South Central Region finish. Coaching the team to a NCAA final season ranking of 23rd, Bird also garnered awards of her own, including the 2008 WAC CoCoach of the Year and the West Region Co-Coach of the Year. In 2007, after 18 years as an assistant coach with the Boise State University gymnastics team, Bird took on a new role and was promoted to co-head coach alongside Resnick. Originally from Milwaukie, Ore., she came to Boise State in 1985 as a freshman on the gymnastics team under former Bronco coach Jackie Carringer. She was a scholarship athlete for Boise State from 1986-89. As a result of her creative dance and unique tumbling, Tina held the school record on floor for four years. She serves as the squad’s chief choreographer, edits music for floor routines and develops the team’s conditioning program along with the Bronco strength coaches. Bird also serves as the team’s beam coach and is in charge of putting together Bronco beam workouts. Bird was selected to coach at the NCAA Youth Education through Sports (YES) clinic in conjunction with the NCAA National Championships in 1998 and 2001. She served as the site coordinator for the YES clinic in April of 2000 when Boise 10

State hosted the NCAA National Championships. Bird also served on the USA Gymnastics Idaho State Board in 2005. A 1990 graduate of Boise State with a degree in physical education, she was honored as an All-American Scholar Athlete by the national coaches’ association. Tina coached at Bronco Elite Gymnastics Academy from 1996-2005, and was the site coordinator for the Special Olympics Summer Gymnastics Games in 1991. She is currently serving as the Bronco Gymnastics Express program director on Boise State’s campus. Her family owns Eddie’s Restaurant and Eddie’s Diner in Boise. She has raced in a number of marathons and halfmarathons. She and her husband, Eddie, have a son Travis (19), and two daughters, McKenna (16) and Julianne (11).

As a master clinician and skill evaluator for the USAG National TOPS program, Resnick tested, trained and developed the nation’s most talented young gymnasts and their coaches in the early stages of their careers. Resnick has also authored training curriculums used by both USAG coaches and the Gymnastics Association of Texas. He served as the Region I Junior Olympic National Committee Chairman for many years, and was part of the coaching staff at the Junior Olympic training camps held at the US Olympic training center.

In their most recent year Bird and Resnick led their team to Western Athletic Conference regular season and championship titles, as well as a third-place finish at the 2011 NCAA North Central Regional. Prior to owning Flips USA, Resnick was the program director and head coach for Le Club Gymnastics in Northridge, Calif. He served as a volunteer coach for CSU-Northridge’s women’s gymnastics team in 1980. He also attended CSUNorthridge on a full athletic scholarship, where he was an NCAA Division II AllAmerican.

In his first season at Boise State, Resnick coached the team to a WAC team title and a fourth-place finish at the NCAA South Central Regional. Helping the Broncos to an outstanding 20-6 record and NCAA final season ranking of 23rd, Resnick also earned the 2008 WAC Co-Coach of the Year and West Region Co-Coach of the Year awards. Resnick was named co-head coach of the Boise State gymnastics team in 2007 after serving as an assistant coach under Sam Sandmire for one season. Resnick brought with him to Boise State a lifetime of experience and knowledge, as well as a significant amount of respect from his peers at all levels of gymnastics. Prior to coming to Boise State, Resnick was the owner, director and head coach of Flips USA Gymnastics in Sparks, Nev., where he coached numerous high caliber competitors including various international, national, regional, and state champions. Among his athletes were many Elite Level qualifiers and 27 NCAA scholarship recipients. With Resnick overseeing the private gymnastics academy, Flips USA garnered more than 20 consecutive Nevada State Open Division championship titles. He has served as both an auxiliary and a full time member of the USA Gymnastics national coaching staff, training and consulting the nation’s top gymnasts. He was also a national staff member attending the World Championships in 2003.
