WOMEN’S GOLF The Boise State Golf Indoor Practice Facility provides the men’s and women’s golf teams with an on-campus site to practice and improve their game. The indoor facility, which is located beneath Bronco Stadium, allows the studentathletes a convenient place to practice around their class schedules and travel arrangements. The practice facility features video equipment for players to record their swings so they my be broken down and analyzed via swing video. The indoor facility also provides an alternative practice site on cooler days.

Nicole Bird is in her seventh season as the head coach of the Boise State women’s golf team, the longest-tenured head coach since the program’s inaugural season in 1992-93.
Young was also named second-team all-conference as a sophomore in the WAC (2010-11), and Iris Ocariza was named All-WAC Second Team in 2008-09.
Since she took over in 2007-08, Bird has steadily orchestrated a turnaround from near the bottom of the Western Athletic Conference to near the top of the Mountain West.
Young earned medalist honors at the Cowgirl Classic in 201213, just the 10th individual title in school history. Her three-round total of 214 (-2) set the school record, and her seven-stroke margin of victory is the second-largest all-time by a Bronco.
Along the way, the Broncos have won team titles, individual titles, several student-athletes have earned recognition both on and off the course and records have fallen. In the final tournament of the fall season, Boise State won the Winthrop Invitational, the eighth team title in school history. Three of the victories have come under Bird, the most by a Bronco head coach in school history. Sophomore Samantha Martin earned individual medalist honors at the event, the 11th by a Bronco women’s golfer alltime, and the first by an underclassmen since Acey Erlandson won a pair of tournaments as a freshman in 1999-2000. The Broncos also won the Cowgirl Classic last season by 19 strokes (April 8-10, 2013), their first outright team title in nearly 13 years and the largest margin of victory since winning the Big Sky Championships by 24 strokes, Oct. 10-12, 1993. The win was one of six top-five finishes on the year – the most in school history. The Broncos earned their first team title under Bird at the Bronco Fall Invitational, Oct. 13-14, 2008, tying for medalist honors. The record-breaking trend of last season carried over to this fall. Last season Boise State established school records at the Price’s “Give ‘Em Five” Invitational (Oct. 8-10), carding the lowest three-round team score in school history with an 893 (+29). The total included a final-round 291 (+3), the lowest single-round score at Boise State all-time. The three-round mark fell in the first tournament of the 2013-14 season, as Boise State carded a total of 882 (+18) at the Bronco Fall Invitational, and the single-round score was matched in the opening round of this year’s season opener. Boise State capped 2012-13 - the most successful season in recent memory - with a second-place effort at the Mountain West Championships, the second-best finish at a conference tournament in school history and the best showing since winning the Big Sky Championships, Oct. 10-12, 1993. The team’s final-round 302 (+14) tied the school single-round record at a conference tournament, as did the three-round total of 916 (+52). Individually, Hayley Young set the school’s single-season scoring average record (75.19) en route to second-team AllMountain West honors. Young broke her own school record, a mark she initially set as a sophomore in 2010-11 (75.83). In all, six of the top-10 single-season scoring averages in school history have come under Bird.
In the classroom, 15 Broncos have garnered conference allacademic honors and six have been named Women’s Golf Coaches Association All-America Scholars. Additionally, three of her golfers were named Mountain West Scholar-Athlete Award recipients for 2011-12, one of the highest academic honors bestowed by the conference. Four more received the accolade in 2012-13. The team set the school record for highest single-semester grade-point average with a 3.68 in the spring of 2012, beginning a streak of four-consecutive semesters with the highest GPA in the department. The Broncos’ 2013 Academic Progress Rate score of 992 was a program record (four-year average), and included a perfect score of 1,000 for 2011-12. Bird brought in a trio of highly-touted freshmen for the 2012-13 campaign, and the group did not disappoint. McKenzie Ford, Samantha Martin and Sammie Pless ranked 20th-natioanally in Golfstat’s Freshmen Impact Rankings at the conclusion of the season. Bird joined Boise State after spending five seasons as an assistant coach at TCU. Her duties as assistant coach included aiding in recruiting, organizing day-to-day operations of the program and helping lead team practices and workouts. The Horned Frogs posted five-straight NCAA Championships appearances and registered five regular-season tournament victories during Bird’s tenure. The 2007 team won the MW Championships, and the program produced three All-America honorees in Catherine Matranga, Valentine Derrey and Brooke Tull. She also helped coach nine NGCA All-America Scholars, one Academic All-American and nine all-conference honorees. Bird served as the assistant tournament director for the 2004 Conference-USA Women’s Golf Championships, as an intern with the American Junior Golf Association and as the AJGA’s Manager of Tournament Administration. A native of Edmond, Okla., Bird attended Western New Mexico University from 1996-98 before transferring to Centenary (1998-2000), where she graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in communication and professional writing. She and husband Steve were married during the summer of 2011.

Assistant Coach Tenur e: Fourth Season Hometown: Boise, Idaho Alma Mater : Boise State, 1994 Dave Bartels is in his fourth year as an assistant coach with the Broncos after joining the program in January of 2011. Bartels serves as the program’s swing coach, assists in the daily mentoring of the Broncos and helps in recruiting. Professionally, Bartels is a 14-year member of the Rocky Mountain Section of the PGA. He has been one of the leading golf instructors in the Treasure Valley for the last 13 years, based out of Pierce Park Greens in Boise. Bartels is a native of Boise, attending Borah High School graduating from Boise State in 1994 with a bachelor’s degree in social science. Dave and wife Becky live in Boise.

KUNA, Idaho – After the opening day of the Boise State women’s golf team’s only home tournament of the 2013-14 season, a trio of Broncos were in the top five, and the team entered the final round in second place at the Bronco Fall Invitational at the Falcon Crest Golf Club.
KUNA, Idaho – A pair of freshmen tied for second place in their first event as members of the Boise State women’s golf team at the Bronco Fall Invitational, the team’s only home tournament of the 2013-14 season.
Boise State posted an opening-round 291 (+3), a score that tied the school record and had the team in a tie for first place. A second-round 296 (+8) gave Boise State a total of 587 (+11), nine strokes back of Santa Clara (291-287--578, +2). Sophomore Sammie Pless concluded the day in second place with a 36-hole total of 141 (-3), one stroke back of SCU’s Kaci McCartan (71-69--140, -4). Pless’s opening-round, 3-under 69 tied the school record, and was tied for the lowest round of the tournament. Fellow sophomore Samantha Martin and freshman Genevieve Ling were each tied for fifth place at 146 (+2). Martin carded a career-low, 1-under 71 in the opening round and followed with a second-round 75 (+3), while Ling went 74-72 in her first event as a Bronco. Fellow freshman Jamie Donizio, competing as an individual, was in fourth place. After opening her Bronco career with a 75 (+3), Donizio carded a 2-under 70 in the second round, concluding the day at 145 (+1). Also competing in her first event as a Bronco, Oceane Pelloille finished the first two rounds in a tie for 23rd with a total of 154 (77-77, +10). Rounding out the scoring for the Broncos were freshman Dana Clary, who was two strokes back of the top 25 with a 36-hole total of 156 (77-79, +12). Redshirt junior Jenna Leurquin and freshman Haliee Pieper, each competing as individuals, shot 165 (+21) on the opening day.
Genevieve Ling and Jamie Donizio carded three-round totals of 217 (+1) at the par-72, 6,158-yard Falcon Crest Golf Club, three strokes shy of the school record. Ling followed Monday rounds of 74-72 with a final-round, 1-under 71, Tuesday. Donizio, competing as an individual, shot 75-70-72. Sophomores Samantha Martin and Sammie Pless joined their freshmen teammates in the top 10, each finishing tied for seventh (219, +3). Pless tied the school record with a 3-under 69 in the opening round, and followed with rounds of 72-78. Martin opened the tournament with a career-best, 1-under 71, and finished 75-73. The Broncos concluded the tournament in second place as a team, shattering the school three-round scoring record along the way. Boise State’s team total of 882 (291-296-295, +18) bested the previous record by 11 strokes, and included a 291 in the opening round - a mark that tied the school record. Santa Clara won the tournament, finishing with a three-round total of 875 (291-287-297, +11). SCU’s Kaci McCartan took home medalist honors, finishing with a 1-under 215 (71-69-75). Oceane Pelloille, also competing in her first tournament for the Broncos, notched a top-25 finish her first time out. The freshman finished tied for 21st at 228 (77-77-74, +12). Freshman Dana Clary missed the top 25 by a stroke, finishing tied for 26th with rounds of 77-79-77 (233, +17). Rounding out the scoring for the Broncos were redshirt junior Jenna Leurquin (83-82-78--243, +27) and freshman Haliee Pieper (83-82-81--246, +30). Each competed as individuals.

AURORA, Ore. – Sophomore Samantha Martin fired a 1-overpar 73 in the opening round of the Rose City Collegiate, and was one of three members of the Boise State women’s golf team in the top 25 after the opening day of the tournament.

Martin was tied for fourth place at the par-72, 6,080-yard Langdon Farms Golf Club, four strokes back of tournament leader Anica Yoo of Oregon State. She would head into the final round looking for a third-consecutive top-10 finish dating back to the 2013 Mountain West Championships, where she tied for ninth place.

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Boise State women’s golf team boasted a trio of Broncos tied for 16th place following the opening round of the Price’s “Give `Em Five” Invitational. Sophomores Sammie Pless and Samantha Martin and freshman Genevieve Ling each shot 74 (+2) at the 6,258-yard New Mexico State University Golf Course, and were just two strokes back of the top 10. Ling notched the Broncos’ first eagle of the season, holing out with a 6-iron from 150 yards on the par-4 10th hole. She followed the eagle with a birdie on the par-3 11th. Portland State’s A Ram Choi led the event following an openinground 68 (-4). The trio had Boise State in seventh place with a team score of 299 (+11), a mere nine strokes back of first-place UC Irvine (290, +2). Boise State entered the second round only one stroke back of tournament-host New Mexico State, and six strokes back of the top three. Sophomore McKenzie Ford carded a 5-over 77 in her first round of the season, and was two strokes back of the top 25. Freshman Dana Clary rounded out the scoring for Boise State with an opening-round 80 (+8).

Ling carded an even-par 72 Tuesday, and at 145 (74-71, +1), and was also looking for her second top-10 finish of the season.
She and Pless (74-71-76) each finished one stroke back of the top 10. Martin’s streak of three-straight top-10 finishes ended, but she was still in the midst of four-straight top 25s. Pless finished in the top 25 in two of the Broncos’ first three tournaments of the season. The duo paced the Broncos, who finished in seventh place.
Sophomore Samantha Martin carded a second-straight 2-over 74 (148, +4), entering the final round tied for 19th.
Boise State carded rounds of 299-293-300 en route to a team score of 892 (+28), the second-lowest three-round total in school history. The mark trailed only an 882 (+18) achieved earlier in the season at the Bronco Fall Invitational, Sept. 16-17.
After improving on their first-round team score by six strokes, the Broncos moved into sixth place. Boise State entered the final round eight strokes back of the top three with a two-round total of 592 (299-293, +16).
Portland State won the tournament at 867 (+3), and the Vikings’ A Ram Choi won individual medalist honors at 208 (-8).
UC Irvine led the event at 577 (+1).

Ford fired a career-low 1-under-par 71 at the 6,146-yard Silver Creek Valley Country Club, and entered the final round just one stroke back of tournament leader Sadie Strain of Santa Clara (70, -2).
McKenzie Ford and Sammie Pless each matched their career bests, finishing tied for fourth and seventh, respectively, and Samantha Martin registered her team-leading third top-10 finish of the season, concluding the tournament tied for 10th.
Ford and Strain are the only individuals in the field at par-orbetter.
Each is just in her sophomore season with the Broncos.
Each of Ford’s four teammates was in the top 20, contributing to a team score of 303 (+15). Fellow sophomore Samantha Martin joined Ford in the top 10, and was tied for seventh place following an opening-round 76 (+4). Freshman Dana Clary was tied for 11th (77, +5), sophomore Sammie Pless was tied for 18th (79, +7) and redshirt junior Jenna Leurquin was tied for 20th (80, +8). Boise State entered the final round looking for its second win in its previous six tournaments, dating back to a 19-stroke victory over Xavier at the Cowgirl Classic, April 8-10, 2013.

Pless recorded a final-round 73 (+1), tied for the field’s lowest score of the day, to finish with a 36-hole total of 152 (79-73, +8) en route to her second top-10 finish of the season. Martin finished at 156 (76-80, +12), and in only four tournaments this season, already ranks tied for ninth on Boise State’s all-time list for most top-10 finishes in a single season (three). She has five-straight finishes in the top 15 dating back to last season. Boise State carded a final-round 313 (+25), falling from first to second place with a score of 616 (303-313, +40). The Broncos had entered the final round with a two-stroke lead, but tournament-host Santa Clara claimed the team title, edging Boise State by one stroke. The Broncos have two runner-up finishes in four tournaments this season, and have finished either first or second in four of their last six tournaments, dating back to last season. Redshirt junior Jenna Leurquin recorded her first top-25 finish since the 2012 Mountain West Championships (April 20-22, 2012), finishing tied for 18th at 160 (80-80, +16). She missed all of last season with an injury. Rounding out the scoring for the Broncos was freshman Dana Clary, who posted rounds of 77-86 (163, +19).

Martin, Broncos Capture Titles at Winthrop Invitational Day One Recap... ROCK HILL, S.C. – Sophomore Samantha Martin carded a 1-over 73 in the opening round of the Winthrop Invitational. She owned a three-stroke lead entering the final round, and helped give the Broncos a 10-stroke lead.
Day Two Recap... ROCK HILL, S.C. - Sophomore Samantha Martin captured the first individual title of her career at the Winthrop Invitational, helping lead Boise State to the team’s eighth championship in school history at the final tournament of the fall season.
The Broncos shot 306 (+18) as a team, 10 strokes clear of a second-place tie between Eastern Kentucky and tournamenthost Winthrop at the 6,044-yard Rock Hill Country Club.
Martin followed an opening-round 1-over 73 with a final-round 79 (+7) at the 6,044-yard Rock Hill Country Club, winning the tournament by a stroke over a group of four tied for second place.
Martin was three strokes clear of a three-way tie for second place, which included her freshman teammate, Oceane Pelloille (76, +4). Her victory is the 11th by a Bronco women’s golfer in school history, and the first by an underclassman since Acey Erlandson won a pair of tournaments as a freshman during the 1999-2000 season. Martin finished with a two-round total of 152 (+8) en route to medalist honors. The finish was her fourth top-10 effort in five tournaments this fall, already tied for the third-most in a single season in school history and just one shy of the school record set by Erlandson in 1999-2000, and matched by Hayley Young last year. Amongst the group of four tied for second place was Bronco freshman Oceane Pelloille, who shot 76-77 (153, +9). Pelloille was making just her second appearance since joining the Broncos, and the tie for second was a career best. She finished tied for 21st earlier in the season at the Bronco Fall Invitational (Sept. 16-17). For the Broncos, the team title is their second in the last seven tournaments. Since winning the Cowgirl Classic (April 8-10, 2013), the Broncos had finished runner-up three times before breaking through for another victory this weekend. Boise State held a 10-stroke lead over a pair of schools entering the final round, and held off tournament-host Winthrop Sunday, edging the Eagles by two strokes. The Broncos posted rounds of 306-319 to finish at 625 (+49). Sophomore Sammie Pless finished a stroke back of the top 10, carding rounds of 78-83 (161, +17) to finish tied for 11th. Fellow
sophomore McKenzie Ford (79-84) and freshman Genevieve Ling (83-80) each finished tied for 17th with two-round totals of 163 (+19). Boise State and Winthrop were the only two schools in the field to have each of their five golfers finish in the top 25. The victory capped a successful fall season for the Broncos, who also recorded two runner-up finishes in their five tournaments. Boise State will try to pick up where it left off next spring, traveling to New Braunfels, Texas, for the Jim West Challenge, Feb. 17-18, 2014.
