Boise State Men’s Basketball Preseason Prospectus 2010-11
TACO BELL ARENA It is one of the finest college basketball venues in the West. It has been the site of cherished moments for Bronco basketball fans. And it has provided some of the greatest spectacles ever in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. Boise State University’s Taco Bell Arena has been the home of Bronco basketball since 1982. Formerly known as the BSU Pavilion, Taco Bell Arena has provided Boise State fans with plenty of thrills for more than 25 years — from the exciting Big Sky Conference championship days of Chris Childs and Arnell Jones in the late 1980s to the 2007-08 Western Athletic Conference championship season, a year in which the Broncos posted a school-record 25 wins en route to a berth in the 2008 NCAA Tournament. With a new head coach, a new optimism running through the veins of the Boise State program, and a revitalized fan base cheering them on, it’s a good bet the 2010-11 Broncos will continue to enjoy the home-court advantage they have had in Taco Bell Arena over the years.
And Taco Bell Arena has seen its share of thrilling basketball moments beyond Bronco hoops. As one of the premier basketball facilities in the West, the 12,380-seat arena has been selected to host first- and second-round games in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament in 1983, 1989, 1992, 1995, 1998, 2001, 2005 and 2009. And those “March Madness” contests in Taco Bell Arena have set the stage for some of the most spectacular games and exciting finishes in NCAA Tournament lore. Who can forget the coast-to-coast buzzer-beater by UCLA’s Tyus Edney that beat Missouri 75-74 and propelled the Bruins to the 1995 title? Or what about the opening round of the 2001 tournament where the four games in Taco Bell Arena— highlighted by Hampton’s 58-57 upset of second-seeded Iowa State — were decided by a total of seven points? Basketball experts called it the most exciting single day at one site in tournament history.

Boise State Men’s Basketball Preseason Prospectus 2010-11 SEASON OUTLOOK
The Boise State University men’s basketball program opens a new chapter with the 2010-11 season. First-year head coach Leon Rice takes the reins of a team returning six lettermen from a 15-17 campaign. The roster includes two starters from 2009-10, and seven seniors. “The cupboard’s not bare,” Rice said. “There were some good players here when we arrived, and a good nucleus of seniors.” Despite the 2010-11 Broncos bringing back 10 players from last year’s squad, it may require a second take for fans to recognize the team running the floor at Taco Bell Arena.
“We want to bring a style of play that’s fun to watch; the community can be proud of; and that really competes every night and every possession,” Rice said. “We are going to be a group that is tough; hard-nosed; plays a fast-paced game; and really gets after it defensively.” The style of play will not be the only difference, though. The 2009-10 class of seniors took with it 28.6 points, 14.7 rebounds and 6.6 assists per game. Rice will lean on his experienced bunch of Broncos to make up the difference. “There are a lot of guys who can help us,” Rice said. “It starts with the seniors. A lot of those guys can fill in by making themselves better and by us pushing them to get better. Getting more out of those guys is our first priority.” To help fill the holes left behind by five departing letterwinners, including three starters, Rice and his staff hit the recruiting trail hard during the late signing period. Taking over a program at the end of March can make building an incoming class a daunting task, but the Bronco brass was up to the challenge. “When you take over a job, you’re limited on the number of guys you can go out and get just because there aren’t as many available in the spring,” Rice explained.
“I think our staff did an amazing job of turning over every rock, and finding some guys who can help this program, not only in their first year, but also in the long term.” The long term includes a number of steps and goals for Rice, who comes to Boise after 11 successful seasons as an assistant and associate head coach at Gonzaga. Rice believes the characteristics that allowed Gonzaga to blossom into a national power will translate to a long list of accomplishments at Boise State. “All of the stuff we did (at Gonzaga) is going to carry over,” Rice said. “There are a lot of things that we felt strongly about as a staff at Gonzaga that I will bring to this program. Number one is to recruit kids with character.” This season Rice has a strong group of experienced upperclassmen and talented freshmen to help put his stamp on the program. Backcourt The Broncos return the most experience in the backcourt. Senior guards La’Shard Anderson and Robert Arnold started 29 and 28 games last season, respectively. Anderson led the Western Athletic Conference in steals, averaging 2.6 per game, ranking him 11th in the nation. He also was second on the team a year ago in assists. Arnold enters his senior season as the Broncos’ leading returning scorer after averaging 11.8 points per game as a junior. Arnold scored in double figures 18 times, including a career night against New Mexico State when he scored 35 points and hauled in 15 rebounds. Rice knows the potential his backcourt duo possesses, and he wants to harness that ability and turn it into consistent numbers. “Both La’Shard and Rob, those two have a ton of talent,” Rice said. “They are guys who can have, and have had, big nights.

Robert Arnold is the leading returning scorer for Boise State after averaging 11.8 points per game in 2009-10.
What we want them to do is to be more consistent. The production has to be night in and night out.” Westly Perryman showed promise early last season in eight games, including two starts, before suffering a season-ending injury. Perryman returns as a junior after being granted a medical hardship, and Rice is excited at the possibilities he presents. “Westly’s an x-factor guy,” Rice said. “We are going to get to know him as we go along, and find out what his role is going to be. A lot of it will be from how he approaches it, but I like his charisma.” Senior Jared Salzwedeland and redshirt freshman G.A. Hill also return to bolster the backcourt. The newcomers to the group include junior college transfer Tre’ Nichols and freshman Jeff Elorriaga. Wings Shooting will be at a premium in Rice’s offense, and the Broncos have just the man for that. Senior Paul Noonan returns for his fifth season with the Boise State program as one of the most accomplished three-point threats in the WAC with a 37.1 career 3-point percentage. Noonan enters the season eighth on the Boise State career three-pointers made list with 145. “Paul has a really good feel for the game,” Rice said, “and he’s really done a nice job in the offseason. I’ve always put a big value

on shooting, and I think that will give Paul a good opportunity to be out on the court.” Rice and his staff are going to enlist the help of a freshman this season on the perimeter, as well. Thomas Bropleh comes to Boise from New Hampton Prep School in New Hampshire and brings a propensity for scoring. Bropleh shot 42 percent from beyond the 3-point line during his one year at prep school. “Thomas will be somebody who can come in and give us some scoring, and some solid guard play,” Rice said. Drew Wiley also joins the Broncos, but will have to sit out the 2010-11 season after transferring from Oregon where he shot 38.7 percent from 3-point range in two seasons. Frontcourt The biggest hole to fill for this season’s Broncos will be in the paint. Last season’s leading scorer and rebounder, Ike Okoye, started 31 games between the power forward and center positions. Boise State returns two big men who earned starts in 2009-10 and two who redshirted. Rice also added two freshmen post players to the mix, and he is going to look to all of them for help. “It will be by committee down low,” Rice said. “There’s nothing set in stone. It’s kind of wide open, and that’s the nice thing for these guys. They are all starting with a new opportunity.” Senior Daequon Montreal has enjoyed the most success in a Bronco uniform after coming on strong to finish the 2009-10 season. Montreal made 11 of his 14 starts during conference play, and led the team in scoring in WAC games, averaging 14.1 points per contest. His play down the stretch earned the junior college transfer a spot on the WAC AllNewcomer team.
NCAA Tournament appearance (Noonan). Imadiyi is coming off a redshirt season after appearing in 30 games for the Broncos in 2008-09. Imadiyi averaged 2.1 points and 1.5 rebounds in just nine minutes per game. The newcomers to the Bronco frontcourt are freshmen Isaac Oeltjen and Ryan Watkins. Oeltjen is the tallest player on the team, standing at 7-feet. Watkins has a big body (6-8, 247) and possesses a great ability to score with his back to the basket. With a veteran-laden group, there is reason for optimism. It is also easy to set unrealistic expectations. Rice and his staff want the Broncos to win more than anybody else, but they are approaching it one step at a time. “My first goal is for these guys to have a great senior year,” Rice said, “and be able to help them have a lot of success in their last year in the program. I want them to be the ones that bring in this new program.” Even though Rice has his sights set on the ultimate prize, he realizes it is a process, and has goals in place for the interim. He wants the Bronco supporters to understand that as well. “The most important thing is we aren’t going to look our best in November, or probably December,” Rice said.” What I hope for this team is we continue to improve throughout the season, so by February and March, is when we play our best basketball. Putting in a new system takes a little time, so we just hope to keep improving every time we hit the floor.”
“Daequon is a versatile player and can score in a lot of different ways,” Rice said. “Since I got here, he has been a team leader and approached everything with hard work and enthusiasm.” Zack Moritz and Sean Imadiyi also return for their senior seasons. Moritz enters his fifth season in the program as one of just two players remaining from the Broncos’ 2008

Daequon Montreal averaged a team-best 14.1 points during WAC games last year, and earned a place on the WAC AllNewcomer team.

Leon Rice Head Coach First Season Washington State, 1986
Leon Rice enters his first season as head coach at Boise State University after being named the seventh coach in school history March 26. Rice joins the Broncos after spending the last 11 seasons on the coaching staff at Gonzaga. He was promoted in 2007 from assistant coach to associate head coach. “We are thrilled to have Leon heading our basketball program,” said Boise State Athletic Director Gene Bleymaier. “His experience and expertise is exactly what we were looking for.” In 2010, Rice helped coach Gonzaga to its 10th-consecutive West Coast Conference regular season title with a conference record of 12-2 while finishing 27-7 overall. In winning its 10th-consecutive regular season title, Gonzaga moved into a tie with Connecticut (1951-60 Yankee Conference) and UNLV (1983-92 Big West) for the secondlongest such streak in NCAA history. UCLA is first with 13-straight Pac-10 titles from 1967-79.

Rice guided Gonzaga to its best NCAA Tournament seeding in 2004 on the No. 2 line. “Leon has been intimately involved in building one of the most successful programs in the country,” added Bleymaier . “Our goal is to do the same here.” Rice has the same vision for the Boise State program, and believes Boise is the perfect place for him to build a winning tradition.

Boise State Men’s Basketball Preseason Prospectus 2010-11 “I love the city, and living here,” Rice said. “I think it’s a great place to raise a family. The community support has been off the charts here for ahtletics. We hope to grow it for basketball” Rice joined the Bulldogs from Yakima Valley College where he served two seasons as an assistant coach and one as co-head coach with the legendary Dean Nicholson, then served as head coach for the 1998-99 campaign. YVC went from worst to first in the first season of the Rice-Nicholson partnership, and in 1999 YVC went 31-2 in capturing its fourth-straight Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) Eastern Region title. The 31 wins were a school record and came four seasons after Rice and Nicholson inherited a program which had gone 3-20 overall during the 1994-95 season.
