BOISE STATE SWIMMING AND DIVING
Why choose Boise State?
6
“Boise State is a place known for having great athletics. After visiting, I realized that I had found a school where I could pursue both my academic and athletic goals.” - Stevie Hughey
“It offers everything a student-athlete could ever want.” - Amanda Burnett
“Why not? Between the school, the team, the athletic department and the city of Boise, I don’t see any reason why anyone wouldn’t want to come here!” - Kelly Forrester “Most of all I loved the growth of this fast, progressive team and knew I wanted to be part of this team’s future success.” - Christine Raininger
“On my recruiting visit, I fell inlove with the town and school. The coaches and the girls on the team are absolutely amazing. It feels like one big famliy, a lot like my own.” - Stephanie North “I wanted a swim team that felt like a family, a coaching staff that could help me achieve my goals and academics that can get me where I want to be in the long run.” - Jennifer Cahill
“When I visited Boise State it felt like home. I have heard great things about the quality of education and the campus is the perfect size.” - Lily Donohue
2009-10 ranked in the top-5 on the Broncos’ top time list.
Excitement surrounds the Boise State swimming and diving team as it heads into the 2009-10 season. The team is coming off a season that saw every record broken by significant amounts. The Broncos have also welcomed a freshman class that includes some of the best newcomers since the program’s inception in the fall of 2006. The Broncos top returnees include senior Chelsea Lopus, juniors Denise Green and Rachael Meisner, and sophomores Stephanie North, Amber Boucher, and Emily Irvin. These swimmers emerged as the team’s top competitors at the WAC Championships and will be significant contributors this season. North became the Broncos first-ever conference champion in the young program’s history in the 100 freestyle. Meisner stood out in the distance freestyle events, setting new team records in the 500 and 1650-yard freestyle. Lopus, Green, Boucher and Irvin were all top contributors to Boise State relays and all hold individual school records in multiple events. The Broncos have a challenging dual meet and mid-season invite schedule that will allow them to prepare well for the 2010 WAC Championships in their quest to contend for the conference title.
Freestyle
North and Boucher will spearhead the women’s sprint freestyle events. The two tied for the school record last season in the 50 freestyle and are clearly the fastest swimmers in the program’s young history. Between the two they could shatter school records in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle multiple times this season.
In long distance freestyle events, the Broncos will be lead by junior Rachael Meisner. Meisner had a great season as a sophomore and is the current school record holder in the 500 free (4:59.21) and 1650 free (17:10.52). She is joined by senior Katelyn Lofland and sophomore Paige LaPorte who will also impact the team as top scorers throughout the season. Look for freshman Jenn Cahill to challenge the group in training and competition for continued time drops and record breaking performances. Cahill comes in with a time that is faster than the Broncos’ top 1000 free time and could challenge all distance records this season.
Butterfly
In addition to the sprint freestyle, Boucher also shines in the 100 butterfly. The sophomore broke the team record last season (55.69) and has the opportunity to contribute big points to the Broncos throughout the season, both individually and as a relay team member. Senior Chelsea Lopus is second on the depth chart for the Broncos, though she is often used in other areas. Newcomers Raininger, Choi, Hughey and Donohue could make significant impacts for the team and could all find themselves at the top of the conference as the season progresses. Sophomore Paige LaPorte could also contribute as she gains speed throughout her sophomore year. Lopus returns after a dramatic time drop last season in the 200 fly, setting a new team record of 2:02.93 and finishing fourth at the WAC Championships. With the addition of Raininger, who had a lifetime best in long course meters at the World Championship trials this past summer that converts to a sub 2:02, the Broncos will be at full strength in this event. Throw in freshman Lily Donohue, who should immediately become a solid performer, and sophomore Paige LaPorte and this could be a big scoring event for the program throughout the season.
BOISE STATE SWIMMING AND DIVING
2009-10 Season Preview
The top returning middle-distance swimmers include North (200 free), Chelsea Lopus (200 free), Denise Green (200 and 500 free), Amber Boucher (200 free), Kim Nelson (200 free) and Emily Irvin (200 and 500 free). North dropped nearly 10 seconds off her best 200 freestyle time last year, setting a new team record of 1:49.70. Although freshman Christine Raininger was recruited mainly for her strength in the butterfly and IM, she could also emerge as one of the Broncos’ best 200 freestylers, which could have great impact on team relays. Freshman Shanelle Choi should begin to make an impact as her 200 freestyle time gets lined up with her strong 100 free (53.65) and 500 free (5:04.81) times.
They will be joined by Kelly Forrester who is coming off a redshirt sophomore year after transferring from Oregon State. Forrester has the ability to make a great impact on this team both individually and as a relay team member. Green played an integral role in relays last season and she could secure a spot again this year on the 400 and 800 freestyle relay teams. Other returners to watch include juniors Kim Nelson and Jenny Nowatzke. Freshmen Stevie Hughey and Shanelle Choi both have the ability to impact the Broncos in sprint freestyle races, with Hughey coming in
7
2009-10 not have the opportunity to swim breaststroke on a consistent basis as her greatest strengths are in the distance freestyle and IM, but she could also prove to be a leader in the 200 breaststroke at the conference level.
BOISE STATE SWIMMING AND DIVING
Backstroke
The Broncos have a great core of backstrokers returning with several freshmen also having an opportunity to make an impact. The team is lead by junior Denise Green who holds team records in the 100 (56.21) and 200 backstroke (2:01.56). Sophomore Morgan McLain could step into a leadership role in these events as well. McLain had time drops across the board last season, but now returns with a stronger base and greater understanding of what it takes to perform at the highest level. Green and McLain should achieve NCAA “B” cuts this season and both have the opportunity to make significant team contributions as relay team members, WAC Championship scorers and possible NCAA Championship competitors. The team added freshman Lily Donohue, who comes in with the second best time in the 200 backstroke and has the ability to develop speed in this program that is known for its sprinting excellence. Freshman Jenn Cahill also comes in with a top-5 time in the 200 backstroke. Other returners to keep an eye on include junior Andrea Thiltgen who is fourth on the top time list in the 100 back (59.01) and fifth in the 200 back (2:06.73). Thiltgen battled back from an injury last year for some good time drops in the 2008-09 campaign. Junior team captain Erica Christianson should also make an impact as the season progresses for the Broncos.
Sophomore Emily Irvin set new standards for the Broncos last season in the breaststroke, but she also stood out in the IM. She holds the team record in the 200 IM (2:05.43) and is expected to vie for the top spot in the 400 IM this season as well. Lopus’ outstanding versatility has made her into a strong IM swimmer as she dropped significant time last season to secure the team record in the 400 IM (4:27.25). She is also a solid 200 IM swimmer and with a strong summer of work behind her, Lopus is certainly one who could make serious impact for the Broncos at the WAC Championships. That won’t come easy as freshman Christine Raininger possesses tremendous all around talent and is good enough to be the Broncos’ top 400 IM performer right away. At the Candadian World Championship Trials in July she showed great promise and will need to translate that success to short course yards to become a differencemaker for the Broncos in both the 200 and 400 IM. Junior Rachael Meisner, though often thought of as a distance freestyler, will also make an impact for the team in the 400 IM this season. She has more strength than ever in the first three legs of the race which will help the Broncos tremendously. Freshman Stevie Hughey joins the Broncos ranked fifth in the team top times list in the 200 IM and is expected to contribute immediately as a freshman. Juniors Tara Hahto and Kim Nelson set new standards last year (2:08.55 and 2:09.47, respectively), and both have the ability to move up and compete even more this season. Morgan McLain and Andrea Thiltgen who have also made big strides in training over the summer and look to set new records across the board this season.
Breaststroke
Breaststroke will be a strength for the Broncos with returner and team record-holder Emily Irvin leading the force. Despite some outstanding time drops for lifetime best swims, Irvin was disappointed with a sixth and seventh-place finish last season in the 100 and 200 breaststroke at the WAC Championships. Her determination to not let that repeat itself has been evident throughout the summer and early fall in training. Irvin could compete at the top of the conference in quite a few events, but the Broncos will use her strength in the breaststroke to go for a record-breaking year that will help catapult them to the top of the conference. Irvin could also open doors for the team by qualifying for the NCAA Championships. Kelly Forrester will be a dominant team member in the 100 breaststroke as well as junior team captain Erin Stotts in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Junior Tara Hahto will provide strength and depth in both events, which gives the Broncos several swimmers with the ability to break in to the top-8 in the WAC. Rachael Meisner might

Others to watch in the 400 IM include Hahto and Christianson who could provide strength and depth needed to compete as a team both in season and at the championship level.
2009-10 2009-10 Schedule BOISE, Idaho – The Boise State swimming and diving team is already looking forward to the 2009-10 season after crowning its first conference champion in program history in 2008-09. The 2009-10 schedule features more tough competition as the Broncos continue to improve as a young program.
The diving program is excited about new coach David Legler who brings a wealth of experience and knowledge after diving with one of the top diving coaches in the country at Indiana University. Sophomore Erin Lionberger brings the most experience to the program and will impact dual meets on both 1 and 3-meter springboard events. Her development on platform this summer should allow her to bring more to the table in championship competition, which will be the first time a Bronco has made real impact on platform. Returner Tana Loan and newcomers Lexi Pfeiffer and Amanda Burnett will contribute in dual meet competition and, as they grow and develop, can make a greater impact in championship competition. Pfeiffer is a freshman from Las Vegas, Nevada who originally planned to come to Boise State as a gymnast but changed sports due to injury toward the end of her high school years. Amanda Burnett was a gymnast for Boise State for two years before retiring and joined the program late last spring. Her strength and fierce work ethic could benefit the program, particularly on platform where her gymnastics skills will be best used.
Relays
The Broncos nearly beat the WAC Champions, Nevada, in the 400 free relay at the WAC Championships in 2009. This season they come back ready to conquer across the board in all five relays. North’s strength and Boucher’s versatility in free and fly give the coaching staff many options when it comes to crafting the relay lineups. Both are great anchor legs that the Broncos can rely on in close races. Green will likely contribute to either medley or freestyle relays. McLain could emerge as the teams fastest sprint backstroker this season, but Green will work hard to defend her spot that she claimed in the 08-09 season. It will be tough for anyone to dethrone Irvin in the breaststroke legs of both medley relays, though Kelly Forrester has some excellent speed in both breaststroke and freestyle that could develop as she continues to build her training base throughout the season. Lopus will figure to be a significant part of the Broncos’ 400 or 800 free relay teams. Freshman Stevie Hughey could provide needed speed for the 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams to grow as dominant forces. Others who could play a role as the season develops include Christine Raininger (free and fly), Kim Nelson (free), Jenny Nowatzke (free) and Shanelle Choi (free and fly).
"We are excited to be hosting four high-quality home meets this season,” said head coach Kristin Hill. “We bring in a Pac-10 team in Washington State, in state rival Idaho, and tough WAC conference competitors with Northern Arizona and New Mexico State.” The Broncos will host two top WAC programs in Northern Arizona on Nov. 13 and New Mexico State on Jan. 30 in their final home meet. In-state-rivals Idaho will also make its way down into Boise with revenge on the Vandals minds after the Broncos edged out a win last year in Moscow. On Nov. 6-7, the Broncos will make a trip to Utah for a pair of meets. They will face Mountain West Conference champions BYU as well as New Mexico and Seattle on Nov. 6 in Provo, Utah, before taking on Utah and New Mexico again on Nov. 7 in Salt Lake City. The Broncos will not be returning to the Husky Invitational this year as they have in the past two years. This year, they will head to Columbia, Mo. for the Missouri Invitational on Dec. 4-6. “This year we are headed to the Midwest for our December invitational and we look forward to swimming at the University of Missouri,” said Hill. “It's a phenomenal facility and we will be competing against some new teams from outside our area.”
BOISE STATE SWIMMING AND DIVING
Diving
The Broncos will kick off the season on Oct. 9-10 at the WAC Shootout in San Jose, Calif., before hosting Washington State in their home-opener on Oct. 17. The Pac-10 opponent will be the first of four home meets and the only non-WAC opponent to make the trip to Boise.
January will bring a trip to San Diego, Calif., for another pair of meets. The Broncos will first have a tri-meet against San Diego State and Tulane on Jan. 7 before visiting WAC-rival San Diego in a dual on Jan. 9. The Broncos will have a great look at the competition before the WAC Championships on Feb. 24-27 in San Antonio, Texas, as their last three meets of the season will be duals against conference opponents.

BIG SPLASH
BOISE STATE SWIMMING AND DIVING
The appropriately named “Big Splash” competition began in 2007 when three defensive lineman challenged three offensive lineman from the Boise State football team to a diving competition at the swimming and diving team’s last home meet. The event made a ‘big splash’ with the fans and continued last year with the addition of a relay race to the diving competition.

It’s been two years full of surprises from Joe Bozikovich’s “Happy Birthday Sushi” dive in 2008 to Darren Koontz’s best Superman impression in 2009.
Last year, KISS FM made its way out to the West YMCA for the annual event and helped judge the contest while broadcasting live.

MEET THE COACHES
BOISE STATE SWIMMING AND DIVING
HEAD COACH KRISTIN HILL Kristin Hill begins her fourth season at the helm of the Boise State swimming & diving team this fall. She was named the inaugural head coach for women’s swimming & diving at Boise State University when the program was added on June 27, 2006. Hill is a graduate of the University of Puget Sound and was most recently an assistant coach at nationally ranked Texas A&M. While working with the Aggies, she worked closely with Olympic swimmers Christine Marshall (USA), Julia Wilkinson (Canada), and Triin Aljand (Estonia). “Our athletic department at Boise State is led by one of the best athletic directors in the country,” said Hill. “Gene Bleymaier has outstanding vision for our department and every program within it. I was given an amazing opportunity to build a program from scratch, and I would not want to do it anywhere else. Boise is a fantastic city, the campus is beautiful, and our family is so excited to be back in the northwest. I was excited to get this program started off on the right foot, and based on feedback from coaches and swimmers in the northwest and around the country, it is clear that we are headed in the right direction.” The team has improved by leaps and bounds every season since its inauguration in the 2006-07 season. Once again, the Broncos rewrote the record books in the 2008-09 season with new records in every event. The Broncos a program-high sixth at the WAC Championships and crowned their first-ever individual champion. Hill also led the Broncos to their first victory over in-state rivals, Idaho, in a dual meet as well as leapfrogging Idaho at the WAC Championships for sixth place. Hill has proven to be an excellent recruiter. During the 2007-2008 season, the Broncos had outstanding improvement from their inaugural season, setting new team records in every event and nine finalists at the WAC Championships. They finished seventh overall, beating the University of San Diego and finishing just 64 points behind the University of Idaho. The team won their first dual meets against Division I schools, beating the Air Force Academy during a road trip to Colorado Springs and San Jose State at home later that month. “I am very pleased that Kristin is a Bronco,” said Boise State Athletic Director Gene Bleymaier. “ With her expertise and direction, and the athletic department’s commitment to excellence, I know that the program will succeed.” During the past three seasons 16 swimmers and divers have been recognized with All Conference Academic Honors. Academics are heavily emphasized in this program, and the Bronco swimming & diving team recorded a 3.09 cumulative GPA during the 2008-09 school year. “Our goal is to graduate all student athletes who start our program and be sure they leave as responsible, independent young women who are ready to go out and make a difference in our world,” added Hill. “We
12
4th YEAR PUGET SOUND, 1994 emphasize teamwork, leadership, and personal development every day in our program. We laugh a lot, but we also teach a great deal and hold each team member accountable. These things, along with our intense desire as athletes to work hard, improve and make a mark nationally as a program, will continue to set our team apart.” Hill served as an assistant women’s swimming coach at Texas A&M in College Station from 2000 through 2006. In those six seasons, she worked in all aspects of coaching with the Aggie program, including on deck coaching in the water and dry-land training, recruiting, program budgeting, administration and coordination of team travel. Hill helped the Aggies to their highest dual meet ranking (eighth) and an 11th place finish at the 2006 NCAA Championships. While at Texas A&M she coached 17 All-Americans, nine Academic AllAmericans and one USA Swimming National Champion. Over her six-year tenure at Texas A&M, the Aggie women posted a dual meet record of 53-18, which marked the best record over a six year span in school history. Before arriving in College Station, Hill was the head men’s and women’s swimming & diving coach at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colo., for three seasons (1997-2000). During the 1999-00 season, the teams set 22 team records and she coached one honorable mention All-American. While serving as the head men’s and women’s swimming coach, she was also the assistant director of admissions for the university from 1998 through 2000. In addition to her collegiate coaching experience, she has coached U.S. Olympic Trial qualifiers and Canadian national team members. Coach Hill also gained international coaching experience in 2005 as she was a member of the Estonian National Team coaching staff at the European Championships in Italy. A Conversation With Coach Hill Q: What does it mean for the program to have a conference champion after only three years of existence? And how important is it that you had multiple swimmers medal at WAC?
Q: What’s next on the checklist for a growing program? A: Our team goals are clear, and the great thing about them is they are the swimmers’ and divers’ goals rather than coachdriven. We want to be the best in our conference and win the WAC Championships. We want to qualify swimmers for the NCAA Championships and have them place in the top 16, including a relay. We want swimmers and divers to qualify for U.S. and Canadian National Teams, particularly the World University Games. We want swimmers to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Trials and we want to work hard to be sure anyone who has a shot for a spot on the Olympic Team is given every opportunity to allow that to happen. These are big goals for a young program, but we have begun to grow into a more mature program even though we are relatively new. The rate of improvement and maturity of this group has really progressed, which is extremely fun to be a part of as a coach. Q: Do you feel the program is out of its infancy with all that has already been accomplished? member of the Phi Kappa Phi National Honorary Scholastic Fraternity. She graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Puget Sound in 1994. Immediately after graduating, Hill pursued a master’s degree at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs. While attending graduate school, she worked as a graduate research fellow for the International Center for Aquatic Research at the Olympic Training Center. Hill had the opportunity to work with many elite athletes, including the 1996 U.S. Olympic swimming team. From 1994-1997, Hill was an age group coach for the Colorado Springs Swim Team. She also coached the Manitou Spring High School swim team in 1996. In 1997 she received her Masters degree in basic science with an emphasis in exercise physiology. Hill grew up swimming in the northwest, training and competing with the Bellevue Club (Bellevue, Wash.) and Chinook Aquatic Club (Mercer Island, Wash.). Her swimming career began in southern Calif., in 1982, where she swam for the Mission Viejo Nadadores. Coach Hill is married to Jason Hill, who is a registered nurse at St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center in Boise. Jason and Kristin have a son, Luke Watson Hill (4), and a daughter, Julia Louise Hill (2).
A: I think it’s pretty clear from looking at our strides over the first three years of our program that we are no longer a program in its infancy. Coaches nationwide at the college and club level have recognized our quick rising success and consistently comment on the good job we’ve done in building a program. This is apparent when I receive phone calls from coaches who tell me they think our team would be a good fit for their swimmer. I feel like recruiting at Boise State is relatively easy, as we have a tradition of winning here and Boise is a great place for a student-athlete to thrive. The level of our recruits has changed so much over the past three years – it’s pretty fun to look back and compare. We are recruiting against Big 10, Big 12 and Pac 10 schools now and we are getting commitments from these student athletes who see that we have so much to offer in a great location. The athletic department support of student-athletes and our program has been impressive. We are in the planning stages for a new facility, and with that will come more and more success. A facility will not guarantee success, but I believe we’ve proven that we can coach, recruit, and compete with some of the best programs in the nation. Throw in a state of the art facility and it will make things that much better.
BOISE STATE SWIMMING AND DIVING
A: Watching Stephanie North win the conference title in the 100 freestyle last season was surreal. I still remember the feeling and the celebration that went on after that race and continued our momentum into the 400 freestyle relay where we nearly won against conference champion team, Nevada. Stephanie’s times last year were huge drops for her, and that was so much fun to experience throughout the season as she got better and better. Going a 23.2, 50.2 and 1:49 in the freestyle events as a freshman with a really new program was spectacular, and we’re excited because we know her best swimming is definitely ahead of her.

ASSISTANT COACH JUSTIN BROSSEAU
14
Boise State’s Head swimming and diving Coach Kristin Hill hired Justin Brosseau as assistant swimming coach in July of 2008. In his first year, Brosseau helped the Broncos to their best finish at the WAC Championships in the program’s three year history. The Broncos also crowned their first-ever WAC Champion en route to their sixth place finish. Under Brosseau, the Broncos continued to rewrite the record books and improve immensely. “We are really excited to have Justin as a member of our coaching staff,” said Hill. “He is a young talented coach who relates well to the women on our team and also offers a lot of knowledge both in technique and in the most effective training methods. He is positive, hard working, dedicated and organized.” Brosseau joins the Bronco family after spending the last season as a volunteer assistant coach for Drury University under coach Brian Reynolds. While at Drury, the women’s team finished second at the NCAA-II Championships while the men’s team won their fourth consecutive title. In addition to his responsibilities at Drury, Brosseau served as an assistant coach for Springfield (Mo.) Aquatics since 2005. During his tenure at Springfield, he coached and worked with Missouri Valley LSC Top 8 swimmers, sectional qualifiers, Missouri State high school champions, junior national qualifiers, and NCAA Division II national champions. As a team, Springfield Aquatics has finished no lower than fifth at the Missouri Valley Division I Championships since his arrival.
2nd YEAR MISSOURI STATE, 2007 Brosseau began his coaching career with the ASA Aquadogs (formerly Truman Aquatics) USA Swimming team in Kirksville, Mo., serving as head coach and administrator of the program from 2002 through 2005. He received his BA in English Literature from Missouri State University in 2007. “Justin’s swimming and coaching experiences with national championship programs will be an asset to our team, added Hill. “He understands our commitment to be a successful and highly competitive swimming and diving program at the conference and national level, and he is committed to helping our women be at their best outside the pool in the classroom and beyond. We are blessed to have him as a part of our program.” Competitively, Brosseau was a three-year varsity letter winner at Truman State University from 2001 to 2004. He achieved several NCAA-II “B” cuts during his career and is still ranked in the Truman swimming all-time top-10 in both the 200 breaststroke and 400 IM. In high school he was a member of the Springfield Aquatics senior team, was multiple event qualifier at the sectional level and a USA Swimming Zone Champion in the 200 breaststroke his junior year. “I am honored to have the opportunity to work with Coach Hill and be a part of creating a tradition of excellence at Boise State,” said Brosseau. “This is a great university in a fantastic city, and the athletic department is very supportive of the program. This team has made great strides in just two years, and I am looking forward to helping Boise State swimming develop into a force at the conference and national levels.”
MEET THE COACHES DIVING COACH DAVID LEGLER
1st YEAR INDIANA, 2009
David Legler joined the Bronco Coaching staff in August 2009 as head diving coach.
“David is one of the finest young men I have ever coached. He is a class act and you will be very impressed with his work ethic, his attitude and his knowledge. He will be an outstanding mentor for your divers and swimmers. You won’t find a better young coach than David,” said Huber. In 2009, Legler earned his Bachelor of Science degree in business with majors in accounting and entrepreneurship from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. He was a member of the Alpha Beta Honorary for student athletes who earn a 3.0 or better for dedication and success in balancing academics and athletics (2006, 2007, 2008). While at Indiana he spent five years competing at a national level. Legler had a successful career in the Big 10 that was exemplified not only by his athletic performance, but also by his personal character when he won the Sportsmanship award for the Indiana Swimming and Diving team two years in a row. He was a team captain and mentor during the 2007-2008 season. Legler’s athletic accomplishments included a top three finish on platform at the Big 10 Championships in 2007 (silver) and 2008 (bronze). The Big 10 Conference is known to be one of the top diving conferences in the nation. Legler was a Zone Qualifier in 2006, 2007 and 2008 and missed qualifying for the NCAA Championships in 2008 by 4/10 of a point. He was a member of the USA Diving Senior National Championship Team in 2008 and was a USA Diving Senior National Qualifier in 2006 and 2008. Legler spent the last four summers as a coach and counselor at the Indiana Diving Academy camp where he gained valuable coaching experience and honed his skills as a diving instructor. “David will be a valuable asset to our swimming and diving program,” says Head Coach Kristin Hill. “He is a great communicator and he thrives on challenging tasks that require strong leadership and time-management skills that give others the chance to excel and reach their potential. We are excited to welcome David to our staff and our swimming and diving program.”
BOISE STATE SWIMMING AND DIVING
Legler competed for Indiana University and coach Jeff Huber, three-time Olympic diving coach, widely regarded as the finest diving coach in the nation.
Legler grew up in Blue Springs, Missouri where he helped Blue Springs High School win the swimming and diving team state title in 2004. He was also a member of Jayhawk Diving Club out of Lawrence, Kansas, and competed in gymnastics for 13 years. “I am very excited to have the opportunity to work with Coach Hill, Coach Brosseau and the diving team. After reading the job posting I knew it was the place for me and I am ready to put my knowledge of diving to use and develop a nationally competitive diving team and contribute to the continued success of the swimming program. I am truly honored to work with Boise State University swimming and diving team which has shown so much potential.”

Coach Kristin Hill on the facilities at Boise State...
The West Family YMCA and Boise City Aquatic Center was built in 1995 and is located near Chinden Boulevard and Cloverdale Road. This facility is a unique partnership between the YMCA and the City of Boise. The Aquatic Center is owned by the City and is operated by the YMCA. The Boise State University pool is a six-lane, 25-yard indoor facility with a deep attached well.
“We have a nice facility on campus for training. It is a 6-lane 25 yard pool with an attached diving well that will give us the opportunity to do very short sprints and run diving practice with a 1 meter springboard and a 1 meter platform. The divers go to the West Boise YMCA three times a week for 3 meter practice. Until a new pool is built on campus, which will happen, we will also host our home meets at the West Y. It is an indoor 50 meter facility that is the best in the state, and one of the best pools in the northwest. The staff there has been so welcoming and just outstanding to work with. The CEO of the Boise YMCA, Jim Everett, was the person who first approached our athletic director, Gene Bleymeier, to talk with him about adding a swimming and diving program, and we are very thankful for his support. The Y also gives us the opportunity to have some long course training throughout the year which is important to help the women prepare for the long course summer season and reach their goals to qualify for Olympic Trials.

Bronco Stadium, Stueckle sky center & Ed Jacoby Track
In an effort to continue the climb in competition, Boise State has outlined a plan to improve the infrastructure and financial position of its athletic department. The project is called the “Initiative for Athletic Excellence.” It is a detailed plan that lays out the direction for the department and its facilities to ensure the Broncos’ continued growth and success.
Caven-Williams sports complex
In the last 11 years Boise State’s growth has led to the addition of women’s soccer in 1998. In 2006-07 women’s swimming & diving joined the family followed by softball in 2008-09. In recent years Boise State has built four competition facilities: the stateof-the-art Appleton Outdoor Tennis Center (2002), the Bronco Soccer and Tennis Complex (2003), Jacksons Indoor Track (2003 - a joint effort with the city of Nampa) and the Mountain Cove Softball Complex (2008). In January of 2006 the CavenWilliams Sports Complex, a 97,000 square-foot indoor practice facility, was opened next to Bronco Stadium. The Boas Indoor Tennis Center also underwent significant renovation with the replacement of the bubbles. The latest project is the Stueckle Sky Center expansion to Bronco Stadium. The stadium project includes a new press box, luxury suites, banquet hall, new ticket office, a Bronco Shop, and much more. Seating capacity for football games will increase to approximately 32,000. Other future projects include a new 10,000-square foot locker room facility and lounges for the men's and women's basketball teams; a new outdoor track stadium and practice area; a new Peterson PRECO Learning Center; a new home for the World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame; and new women’s sports facilities, including competition venues for softball.

CONFERENCE Affiliations The Western Athletic Conference... In its 47th year, the Western Athletic Conference continues to evolve and features some of the nation’s best intercollegiate competition. One thing that remains unchanged is the persistent nature of the nine schools in the WAC to advance their programs to contend at the top levels of the NCAA. The WAC provides its student-athletes the chance to travel to scenic destinations and gain exposure in some of the nation’s most diverse markets. In addition, the WAC’s student-athletes work to achieve the highest levels of success with the academic support of their respective institutions. The WAC has experienced tremendous success. Over the past six years, it has won 54.5 percent of its bowl games, the third best winning percentage of any conference in the nation. In the past six seasons, the WAC has sent a total of 22 teams to bowl games (12-10). Boise State has won 76 games since joining the conference, the most in the nation during that time span (2001-07). For the second year in a row, the WAC sent a team to a BCS bowl game as Hawai‘i earned a Nokia Sugar Bowl bid this past season following Boise State’s unforgettable victory in the 2007 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. In men’s basketball, the WAC has sent at least two teams to the NCAA Tournament in 23 of the past 25 seasons. Every current school in the WAC has competed in the NCAA Tournament since 1990. In women’s sports, Fresno State softball has competed in every NCAA Tournament ever held while Louisiana Tech basketball has played in all but two.
The WAC is the sixth oldest among the nation’s 11 Division I-A conferences. Its history traces back to July 27, 1962, when the original six-team league of Arizona, Arizona State, Brigham Young, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming began competition. B e f o r e 1 9 9 0 , t h e WA C s p o n s o r e d championships only in men’s sports. However, a merger with the High Country Athletic Conference formed a single conference under one administrative structure, and the 1990-91 athletic year was the first in which both men and women competed under the WAC name. Currently the WAC membership consists of Hawai’i which joined in 1979, Fresno State (1992), San Jose State (1996), Nevada (2000), Boise State and Louisiana Tech (2001), and Idaho, New Mexico State and Utah State (2005). Presently, the WAC crowns team and individual champions in 19 sports – eight men’s and 11 women’s. For the men, there are championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field. Championships for women are held in basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and volleyball. The WAC office has been located in the Denver area since the conference’s inception with the exception of a two-year stay in Phoenix from 1964-66.

CONFERENCE Affiliations Karl Benson
WAC Commissioner Alma Mater: Boise State When Karl Benson was named the fifth commissioner in the history of the Western Athletic Conference on April 20, 1994, he brought with him a wealth of experience and a personal history of success to the position. Since that time, Benson not only has laid a strong foundation for the WAC’s future, he also steered the conference through unsettled times during the late 1990s and again a few years later when the defection of member institutions threatened the WAC. Through his leadership and vision, it didn’t take long for the WAC to regain its place among the nation’s top Division I conferences. Benson has spearheaded conference expansion with the additions of Nevada, Boise State and Louisiana Tech earlier this decade and an additional round of expansion with New Mexico State, Utah State and Idaho joining the league a few years ago. Nationally, Benson has earned the respect of his peers after serving on the NCAA Management Council from 1999-2002, and a five-year term on the NCAA Men’s Basketball Committee from 2002-06. Benson hit the ground running when he was hired in 1994 and initiated several programs that improved the conference’s national position in virtually ever category. He was instrumental in developing multi-year agreements with the Holiday Bowl, Cotton Bowl, Copper Bowl, Las Vegas Bowl, Silicon Valley Football Classic, GMAC Bowl and currently, the Roady’s Humanitarian Bowl, Sheraton Hawai‘i Bowl and New Mexico Bowl. In 1995-96, the WAC signed an exclusive multi-year agreement with ESPN for the unprecedented live telecasts of basketball and football. Included in that deal was a women’s basketball contract, the first in conference history. Currently, a second agreement with ESPN
and ABC has resulted in 80 football games being televised over the past five years. Benson came to the WAC after four successful years as the commissioner of the Mid-American Conference. There, he implemented several innovative projects and was instrumental in the formation of the Las Vegas Bowl. Prior to taking the reins of the MAC, Benson served on the NCAA staff for more than four years where he was the director of NCAA championships. Benson joined the NCAA staff in January of 1986 as a compliance representative and was appointed assistant director of championships in June 1987. He was promoted to director of championships in 1988. In that position, Benson actively supervised eight assistant directors in their administration of 68 NCAA championships. A native of the state of Washington, Benson graduated from high school in Pullman in 1970, attended Spokane Falls Community College and then received a bachelor of science degree in physical education from Boise State University in 1975. He has also completed coursework toward his master’s degree in athletics administration at the University of Utah. Benson played baseball at both Spokane Falls Community College and Boise State University before serving as the baseball coach at Fort Steilacoom Community College in Tacoma, Wash., for eight years and as the director of athletics at Fort Steilacoom from 1979-84. From 1984-86, he was an assistant baseball coach and an administrative assistant in the athletic department at Utah. He received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Boise State in April of 2006. Benson was born on December 1, 1951 and has one daughter, Jessie, 17.

Strength AND Conditioning
Coach Socha’s Philosophy Head strength and conditioning coach Tim Socha’s philosophy is that student-athletes are not only going to train hard, but that they are going to do the correct exercises that help them excel in their sport. The staff uses variation in the training programs to enhance the student-athletes’ ability to adapt and improve. The variation involves both multi-joint and multi-plane training. Flexibility, core strength and proprioceptive training also is included in all programs. Through all of the training, sport specificity is emphasized, and the one thing that will never be forgotten is that hard work is what wins championships. All 19 Boise State varsity athletic teams utilize the strength and conditioning center. Each team has a sport-specific program designed to help each student-athlete increase his or her athletic potential and decrease the chance of injury. Boise State coaches take pride in the fact that their student-athletes are some of the best conditioned in the nation. The facility is fully equipped with many different machines, as well as various free weight equipment.

Director of Athletics Gene Bleymaier, Boise State Director of Athletics
Under Gene Bleymaier’s leadership, Boise State University’s Department of Athletics has scaled impressive and unprecedented heights with the accomplishments of its studentathletes, the successes of its teams, the growth of its facilities, the support of its community, and the advancement of its status among the nation’s premier athletic programs. Bleymaier is in his 29th year at Boise State. He joined the Athletic Department in 1981 and became the Broncos’ AD in February of 1982. In June 2008 Bleymaier received the Astro Turf Athletic Director of the Year Award at the national athletic directors’ conference in Dallas. He currently is the Western Athletic Conference’s representative to the Bowl Championship Series. In 1997 Bleymaier led the effort to create the Humanitarian Bowl – now called the Roady’s Humanitarian Bowl – and he continues to serve on the board of directors for the annual postseason football game. He served a four-year term as the WAC representative on the NCAA Division I Management Council and is also past president and vice president of the NCAA I-AA Athletic Directors’ Association. He is also a member of the Boise-based World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame board of directors. Under Bleymaier’s guidance, Boise State’s football program has grown spectacularly and gained national attention since it joined the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly I-A) ranks in 1996. In just over a decade competing at the highest collegiate level, Boise State football has put itself on the national map with winning records, league championships, national rankings and bowl victories in front of a national audience. Among the nation’s FBS programs, Boise State has the best overall record in the last 10 years (108-20, 84.3 percent), the best winning percentage for conference games the past 10 years (70-5, 93.3 percent), and has been the highestscoring team in the nation since 2000 (41.16 points per game). In 1986 Bleymaier was responsible for the installation of the artificial blue turf in Bronco Stadium, which has become one of the most
recognizable sports venues in America and the city of Boise’s most famous landmark. In 1996 he led Boise State’s move to FBS as a member of the Big West Conference, and in 2001 he guided the Bronco Athletic Department’s transfer to its current membership in the WAC. In its first eight years in the WAC, the Bronco football team has won six league championships and finished second twice. In 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2008 Boise State went 8-0 in conference play. The Broncos have won a total of 23 league championships in all sports since joining the WAC. Prior to joining the WAC, Boise State won 15 team titles overall while it was a member of the Big West Conference from 1996-2001, and 33 overall league championships in the Big Sky Conference from 1982-1995. The Broncos also captured 13 Big Sky all-sport championships. Boise State sponsors 19 intercollegiate sports – eight for men and 11 for women. All teams compete in the WAC with the exception of wrestling (Pac-10). The 2008-09 athletic season was highlighted by six teams completing their seasons ranked in the top 25 of their respective sports and Boise State finishing the year with its highest ever finish in the Learfield Sports Director’s Cup at 49th. Football led the way capturing its sixth WAC title in seven years and finished the season ranked 11th in the nation by the Associated Press with an overall record of 12-1. Wrestling won its second straight Pac-10 championship before placing 12th at the NCAA National Championships. The Broncos won their other WAC team titles in men’s indoor track and field, gymnastics and men’s tennis (regular season). Boise State also sent several other teams to regional and national post-season competition highlighted by the men’s tennis team advancing to the round of 16 at the NCAA National Tournament for the first time in over 10 years. Individually, another chapter was added to the Bronco history book when Eleni Kafourou became the first female to win a national championship when she finished first in the women’s triple jump at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. Conference wise Boise State student-athletes won 23 league championships. Behind Bleymaier’s guidance, Boise State student-athletes have also excelled in the classroom. During the 2008-09 academic year, 136 Bronco student-athletes received conference all-academic honors. Following the spring 2009 semester, Bronco studentathletes set an all-time single semester gradepoint-average mark at 3.00 and an all-time cumulative GPA at 3.04, marking the fourth straight semester the Boise State studentathlete cumulative GPA has been over 3.00. A record 65 percent of all student-athletes earned a 3.0 or better GPA last year.
In May of 2009, the NCAA announced its multi-year academic performance rates (APR) and Boise State has the highest rates in the WAC for the sports of football, men’s basketball, men’s tennis (a perfect 1000 score), outdoor track and field, and men’s cross country – the most No. 1 rankings of any WAC school. The football and men’s basketball teams led the WAC for the third straight year. Moreover, the athletic program’s overall APR has improved every year. While Boise State has enjoyed unprecedented success on the playing fields, courts and in the classroom, it has also drastically improved its facilities under Bleymaier’s direction. In August of 2008 the most expensive capital project in the history of Bronco athletics opened with the $36 million Stueckle Sky Center which includes a stateof-the-art press box, suites, loge boxes and club seats. On August 1, 2009 Boise State officially acquired control of the 15.5-acre East Junior High School site from the Boise School District with plans to build future athletic facilities there. Located just northeast of the main campus, the first project planned will be to move Ed Jacoby Track from Bronco Stadium and build a new track and field facility. The most recent facility was unveiled this past year with the opening of the Mountain Cove Softball Field. In a cooperative effort with the Boise School District, the Bronco athletic department renovated the complex adding a press box, more seating, a scoreboard, batting cages and replacing the field. In 2006, Boise State opened the CavenWilliams Sports Complex, which is a $9.5 million indoor practice facility that includes a full size football field and the Keith and Catherine Stein Band Hall. Other capital projects completed during Bleymaier’s tenure include the Boas Tennis/ Soccer Center, a 1997 expansion of Bronco Stadium, the Allen Noble Hall of Fame Gallery, the Williams Plaza, the Peterson-Preco Learning Center, the Appleton Outdoor Tennis Center, the Jackson Indoor Track, the Idaho Sports Medicine Institute, the Bronco Football Center, the gymnastics room expansion, the Simplot Center for Athletic Excellence, the Fedrizzi Fitness Center expansion, and an expansion of the Nicholson-Yanke Center. Bleymaier served as an assistant athletic director at UCLA prior to coming to Boise State. A member of the California Bar Association and a graduate of the Loyola Law School, Bleymaier received his bachelor’s degree from UCLA. Bleymaier lettered in football and was named to the All-Pac 8 Conference third team as a tight end for the Bruins. He was the recipient of the UCLA Outstanding Senior Award and was active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Bleymaier graduated from Borah High School in Boise. Bleymaier and his wife, Danell, have four children – Maribeth, Joe, Claire and Tom.

On the last day of the 2009 WAC Championships, Stephanie North became the Broncos first-ever WAC champion when she outtouched teammate, Amber Boucher in the finals of the 100 free. Later in the day, Boucher and North, along with Chelseas Lopus
and Denise Green, earned the silver in the 400 free relay to give the Broncos their first-ever relay medal in only the third year of the program’s existence. With a constantly improving program, the three medal performances should be the first of many to come.
