The Small Business & Technology Development Center (SBTDC) hosted by Missouri State University-West Plains is a technical assistance provider that works with business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs. We offer business management training and confidential one-on-one consulting services to individuals who want to start a business or expand their existing business.

2015 - 2016 HIGHLIGHTS SEPTEMBER

Restaurant Management & Food Safety Celebrating National Food Safety Month, this event brought together speakers from the Howell County Health Department and the South Central Career Center’s Culinary Arts Program to share about food inspections and the ServSafe curriculum. The theme “Norovirus” from the National Restaurant Association provided guidance on preventing foodborne viruses.

OCTOBER

Manufacturing Day in America—MFG DAY MFG DAY invited students and community members alike to learn about products made locally, participate in plant tours, and understand the vital importance manufacturing has on our regional economy. Students from the manufacturing program were able to see what they were learning in action as they learned about modern manufacturing.

NOVEMBER

Small Business Saturday—SHOP SMALL For the third consecutive year, the SBTDC was proud to be the official “Neighborhood Champion” for national Small Business Saturday in West Plains, Missouri. This day of support for our neighborhood small businesses raised awareness of the impact shopping locally has on our rural economy while giving back to our clients with fun promotional items curtesy of American Express.

DECEMBER

Hobbyist Turned Entrepreneur With the annual craft fair being the largest tradeshow held annually at the West Plains Civic Center, we brought training on engagement marketing. We want to encourage this growing sector of local hobbyists to sell outside our local community and find buyers through electronic marketing platforms. Partnering with Constant Contact, their certified trainer instructed the course with tips and tools for all entrepreneurial levels.

JANUARY

Small Farm Conference The Ozark Farmers Ag Co-op partnered with SBTDC, MSU-WP and the City of West Plains and brought two days of 20+ agribusiness training sessions to learn how to create income from small acreage and bring back the American Small Farm! Addressing the needs of our agrarian economy, this event was packed with information on different types of farming, best practices, and available resources to support our area farmers.

FEBRUARY

Etsy Craft + Entrepreneurship Series In partnership with Etsy, a leading e-commerce platform for creative entrepreneurs, SBTDC offered the first Craft + Entrepreneurship training in Missouri led by a certified Etsy trainer. This hands-on training took place in the computer lab. Five intensive weeks of training taught local artisans how to open an online shop for handcrafted products.

Agribusiness Marketing Forum Bringing marketing and financial resources to local farmers is what this event was all about. Speakers from federal, state, and non-profit business development organizations shared about no- to low-cost opportunities to help agricultural businesses grow.

National Small Business Week An official event of the Small Business Administration, the SBTDC celebrates National Small Business Week by presenting timely business topics from renowned speakers. This year’s focus was intellectual property and product design protection. Working with Husch Blackwell, LLP, licensed patent attorneys spoke about different types of intellectual property, 3D design protection and manufacturing trends to help local designers and manufacturers be more competitive.
