Bear Grassl

Head Coach (6th season) Head Coach Ed ‘Bear’ Grassl returns for his sixth year at the helm of the Sonoma State University volleyball program. Grassl has recorded winning seasons in three of his five seasons with the Seawolves and sports an overall record of 65-70. Grassl took the reigns in 2002 and led the Seawolves to a 15-14 record. He repeated the feat in 2003 (15-14) and then went 14-12 in ‘04. Over the last two years, the Seawolves have struggled in the win column playing in the tough California Collegiate Athletic Association with a young squad. This talented group now has some seasoning and Grassl looks forward to success in 2007 and beyond.

Jesse Ortiz Assistant Coach

A former player on the Sonoma State men’s club volleyball team, Jesse Ortiz joins the coaching staff in 2007. Ortiz graduated from Sonoma State in 2004 and has several years of coaching experience under his belt. He has previously coached the SSU men’s club team and the women at Petaluma High School.

Career Record

In five seasons at Sonoma State, Grassl has coached nine All-Conference performers and has a 22-13 record against Northern California CCAA opponents (Chico, Stanislaus, SF State, Monterey Bay, Humboldt). He also saw one of his players, Taylor Manton, earn ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors last year.

Former El Molino High School star Michaela Ebben spends her second season on the coaching staff in ‘07. Ebben played under Coach Grassl at El Molino and as a member of the Empire Volleyball Club. Following her high school career, Ebben went on to play four years at the University of Arizona. She spent two years as the Wildcats’ starting setter and was named All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention in 1997.

Assistant Coach A three-year member of the SSU men’s club volleyball team, Ben Stern will assist the Seawolves in 2007. Stern has also coached the Petaluma High JV team and with Empire Volleyball Club.

2007 Preview The Sonoma State volleyball team is ready to make their mark in the competitive California Collegiate Athletic Association. After a couple of subpar seasons, the Seawolves feel they now have the experience to match their talent level.

At setter, expect to see Lindsay Brown get the majority of playing time. The sophomore split duties in 2006, but is ready to run with the role on a full-time basis in ‘07. Her continued improvement will be a key towards the success of the offense.

After splitting the job last year, Lindsay Brown will be the team’s primary setter in 2007.

Leading the hitting attack for the Seawolves will be an impressive, if untested, group of outside hitters. Senior Rachel Sagapolu provides a veteran presence on an extremely talented group of newcomers. NCAA Division I transfer Kristy Sather returns home for her final two seasons. A former all-everything player at Maria Carrillo High School in Santa Rosa, Sather previously attended UC Santa Barbara and the University of Arizona. Another talented rookie ready to make her mark is freshman Marianne Fox from Forestville. Amanda Vanover, Sarah Hillier, Natalie Coward, and Kendahl Batiste should add some depth to the outside hitter position. The Seawolves return four middle blockers from last year’s team. Kaylee Aizenstadt, one of the team’s leading hitters her first two years on the team, should get plenty of balls set her way. Rikki Buckshnis is eager to return after missing all of 2006 to a medical redshirt. Samantha Jagoda and Sarah Illingworth also provide a wealth of potential at middle blocker. The Seawolves’ most impressive returners may be at the defensive specialist/libero positions. Taylor Manton and Lillian Harms are now both seniors and are quickly rising to the top of the all-time digs chart. Manton, who was moved to outside hitter last season, will return to her familiar libero role. Harms, who as a libero broke SSU’s digs per season and digs per match records in 2006, will move back to defensive specialist this season. As always, the Seawolves play one of the top schedules in the nation. SSU will open the season with their own tournament, the Seawolf Spike, before heading to Hawaii to compete in another tournament. The CCAA should again be tough with the leaders being among the top ranked teams in the nations.

Director of Athletics

Bill Fusco is now in his eleventh year as the Director of Athletics at Sonoma State University. Under his leadership, SSU intercollegiate teams have become a competitive force since joining the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) in 1998. SSU teams have performed well at the regional and national level during his tenure. Fusco has overseen an unprecedented number of changes in the SSU intercollegiate athletic program, since his arrival in 1997. SSU Athletics has successfully moved into the CCAA, initiated the awarding of athletic scholarships, transitioned to a new mascot, established media partnerships and has expanded fund raising through special events like Bidnight Madness and the Annual Fund Drive of the Seawolves Athletic Association. Fusco has served as President of the CCAA (2004-05) and is the Past President of the NCAA Division II Athletics Directors Association. He also served for four years (1999-2003) on the Executive Committee of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). Fusco also served on the NCAA Division II Degree Completion Scholarship Committee and the NCAA West Region Women’s Tennis Committee. He is currently serving a term on the California State University Risk Management Authority Athletic Injury Medical Expense Board. Fusco was recently appointed to a four-year term on the NCAA Championships Committee. With over 26 years of combined athletic administrative experience, Fusco has served as Director of Athletics at the University of San Francisco and Dominican University of California and as Sports Information Director at St. Mary’s College in Moraga and the University of San Francisco. He is an adjunct faculty member in the USF Graduate Sports Management Program where has taught an elective class titled Administrative Leadership in Intercollegiate Athletics. He is also an adjunct faculty member at Dominican University and has taught a class titled Introduction to Sports Management.

Assistant Athletics Director Sports Information Director

Brandon Bronzan is in his sixth year as Sports Information Director and second as Assistant Athletics Director at Sonoma State University. Appointed as S.I.D. in October 2002, Bronzan oversees publicity and media relations matters concerning the Sonoma State athletic department. In 2006, Bronzan was promoted to Assistant Athletics Director where he has additional responsibilities in the areas of scheduling, event management and website development, especially in the areas of e-commerce and audio/ video streaming.

Prior to coming to Sonoma State, Bronzan was a Media Relations Assistant with the Tennessee Smokies, then Class AA affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. Bronzan also worked for the Visalia Oaks and as a student assistant in the Sports Information department at SSU. He is a 2001 graduate of Sonoma State University with a B.S. in Business Administration (Management). A member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), Bronzan serves on the organization’s Publications Committee and Membership Services Committee. He is also a voting member of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers of America (NCBWA) and coordinator of the Daktronics Division II All-West Region Men’s Soccer team.

Sonoma State University occupies 269 acres in the beautiful wine country of Sonoma County, in Northern California. Located at the foot of the Sonoma hills, the campus is just an hour’s drive north of San Francisco and 40 minutes away from the Pacific Ocean. As California’s premier public undergraduate institution, SSU has a commitment to graduating students who have the ability to think critically and ethically and can effectively use information technology. Alumni Association SSU has an active Alumni Association that maintains a continuing connection between the University and its alumni, sponsoring educational projects, programs and activities to continue the relationship students have with their university. Degree/Program Offerings Within its 36 academic departments, SSU offers 41 bachelor’s degree programs and 14 master’s degree programs. In addition, the University offers a joint master’s degree in mathematics with San Francisco State University and a joint doctorate in educational administration with California State University, Sacramento and the University of California, Davis. The University offers 9 credential programs and eight undergraduate and graduate certificate programs. Basic teaching credential programs in education include multiple subject, multiple subject BCLAD, single subject, administrative services, reading/language arts (certificate or specialist), special education (mild/moderate or moderate/severe), pupil personnel services (via the Counseling Department).
