2008 SEASON PREVIEW Q&A WITH HEAD COACH BEAR GRASSL

Last year’s team started slow, but had a great finish (8-3 over their last eleven). How does last season’s second half success help this year’s team? Grassl: I think it adds confidence. We now are confident that we can beat any team in the conference. We were able to pull out a lot of close wins...a lot of fifth-set victories. Now, we’re a year older and more experienced. Last year’s success also gave us a sense of what works for us. We now know the style of play that works for us and will enable us to have success in 2008. How does the CCAA shape up in 2008? Grassl: As always, the CCAA is tough. All of the best teams (San Bernardino, Chico, Pomona, L.A.) return pretty much everyone. It all starts with Cal State San Bernardino... they’re a favorite to win the national championship. All of the top teams have incredible depth. I think that the biggest difference in the CCAA is the quality of the lower Kristy Sather and the Seawolves hope to half. The teams at the bottom of the standings are much more talented than ever make their first trip to the regionals since ‘93. before. San Francisco State seems to have really hit the ground running and Stanislaus is much better. There are no nights off in the CCAA. What newcomers do you expect to step in and make a difference in 2008? Grassl: We have a lot of talented newcomers. Ali Walker comes in and should be an anchor for us. She will solidify our ball handling and service reception. Taylor Krenwinkel is going to step right in as our starting libero and Kelsey Dall will also see a lot of time as a defensive specialist. You lost two of the top defensive players in school history in Taylor Manton and Lillian Harms. How do you go about replacing that duo? Grassl: They will definitely be tough to replace, but I think we’ve done a nice job filling the holes. We also lost Sarah Hillier, a player who was able to absorb a lot of the jobs that don’t show up in the stats. Ali Walker will fill her role this season. In all we lose five of our six service receivers...Devin Scully is the only returner. The service reception unit is the bedrock of the team, like the offensive line on a football team. With Ali, Taylor, and Kelsey I think we pick up right where we left off last year. What are some characteristics you’ve seen from this year’s team? Grassl: From a personality standpoint, they seem fairly peaceful. Strategically we’ve become a low-error, low-risk team. To put in in football terms again, we’re a running team not a passing team. We may be a little slower and more predictable, but we’re sure to get our best swings in. We strive to be as efficient and error free as possible and that’s more important than ever with the new 25-point set (instead of the old mark of 30). The game is too short to give up points. We’ve built a team that is able to stay in a rally. We’re a little smaller, but we have good high ball hitters, especially Kristy Sather, who is one of the top left sides in the conference. Marianne Fox is the kind of player that fits perfectly in our system. What are your expectations/goals for 2008? Grassl: We’re not that far off from being a playoff team. We feel that if we are successful in our non-conference schedule, we’ll go to the regionals. The CCAA is really strong this year...five CCAA teams could be among the eight regional qualifiers. If we’d have played better in our non-conference games last year, we might have gone to the regionals.

BEAR GRASSL

HEAD COACH

Head Coach Ed ‘Bear’ Grassl returns for his seventh year at the helm of the Sonoma State University volleyball program. After a tough a tough start to the 2007 season, the Seawolves found their stride in the second half of the year, going 8-3 over their final 11 games to finish 13-14, 9-9 CCAA. During their strong second half push, the Seawolves knocked off three nationally ranked teams. With many returners, including all-region outside hitter Kristy Sather, the Seawolves look forward to even more success in 2008. Grassl took the reigns in 2002 and led the Seawolves to a 15-14 record. He repeated the feat in 2003 (15-14) and then went 14-12 in ‘04. In 2005 and 2006, the Seawolves struggled in the win column playing in the tough California Collegiate Athletic Association with a young squad. In six seasons at Sonoma State, Grassl has coached 12 All-Conference performers and has a 26-17 record against Northern California CCAA opponents (Chico, Stanislaus, SF State, Monterey Bay, Humboldt). He has also seen his players earn three Academic All-District honors in the past two seasons. A 1991 graduate of Sonoma State, Grassl was head coach at El Molino High School from 1992-2001. During that span, he guided the Lions to six Sonoma County League championships, seven North Coast Section titles, five Northern California championships and one California state championship, in 1999. His career coaching mark at El Molino was an impressive 267-78.

JESSE ORTIZ ASSISTANT COACH

A former player on the Sonoma State men’s club volleyball team, Jesse Ortiz returns for his second season on the coaching staff in 2008. Ortiz graduated from Sonoma State in 2004 and has several years of coaching experience under his belt. He has previously coached the SSU men’s club team and the women at Petaluma High School.

MICHAELA EBBEN ASSISTANT COACH

Former El Molino High School star Michaela Ebben spends her third season on the coaching staff in ‘07. Ebben played under Coach Grassl at El Molino and as a member of the Empire Volleyball Club. Following her high school career, Ebben went on to play four years at the University of Arizona. She spent two years as the Wildcats’ starting setter and was named All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention in 1997.

From our team to yours. At In-N-Out,® freshness is everything. That’s why we make our burgers with 100% pure beef, hand-leafed lettuce, and vine-ripened plump tomatoes stacked high on a freshly baked bun. We also make our fries from fresh, whole potatoes. In fact, we don’t even own a microwave, heat lamp, or freezer. So come in and try a delicious made-just-for-you burger. You’ll never look at burgers the same way again.

The 11-member league is home to some of the nation’s finest NCAA Division II athletic programs in Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State L.A., Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Stanislaus, Cal State Monterey Bay, Chico State, UC San Diego, San Francisco State, Humboldt State, and Sonoma State. These institutions compete in seven women’s and six men’s CCAA-sponsored sports. Fall sports include men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. Men’s and women’s basketball are contested in the winter, and women’s tennis, men’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, softball and baseball comprise spring competition. CCAA members have won 146 NCAA Championships (98 men, 48 women) which is far and away the most of any Division II conference. The CCAA has undergone several changes in conference membership since charter members UC Santa Barbara, Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State came together to form the league in 1938. Over the past 68 years, a number of institutions have been members of the CCAA, including Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Chapman, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Pacific, Pepperdine, UC Riverside, UC Davis and Grand Canyon University.
