Q&A WITH MARK RIGBY With only one senior on this year’s roster, whom will miss part of the season due to injury, what do you expect from this year’s team, especially being so young?
The team was left out of last year’s CCAA tournament by virtue of a coin flip. How do you see the squad bouncing back after such an unfortunate way to end the season? I really don’t see that having any bearing on this year’s team. We needed to improve and get better on the court so we don’t put ourselves in a position of having a coin flip determine the outcome of our season. We need to bounce back from the fact that we were 11-16. Hard work, a positive attitude and a commitment to improving individually and collectively are what we’ll need for that to happen. The positive aspect is that our situation forced the conference office to review and change the tie-breaking policy. I haven’t seen the final draft but anything is better than the chaos our players, coaches and parents went through in March.
I see the team as a very fluid, changing and hopefully improving entity. Having a veteran team certainly allows you to progress from a system standpoint quicker. However, the melding of strengths and personalities and improving is more about the players being receptive to what our team philosophy and goals are. We worked very hard at coaching a positive attitude and personal accountability in the spring and continued that when the new student-athletes joined us in the fall. Coach Roeser implemented many team building activities during that period of time to facilitate teamwork and personal accountability. Which of the returners do you think will step it up this season and lead the Seawolves to a potential CCAA tournament berth? Early in the season, we have seen dramatic improvement across the board from the returning players. Jaclyn Bisordi, Aly Conway, Roxanne Rentschler, Taylor Vigil, Kelsey Wagner, Elizabeth Day and Vanessa Kelley have all made enough progress that not mentioning any of them would be unfair. Oly Larkin’s improvement has been more about emotional and mental maturity than physically playing better. During the preseason conditioning and first couple of weeks of practice she was leading through her efforts and attitude. Unfortunately, she’s been injured and will probably be out until at least Christmas. However, she has continued to be an asset in practice and on the bench in sharing her experience with her teammates.
Of your newcomers, who can we expect to contribute night in and night out this season? From a recruiting standpoint, my goal was to improve our perimeter shooting and maturity. Aly Henington and Amrallina Rowland are a couple of junior college transfers that have adjusted to the higher level of play very quickly and established themselves as major contributers both on and off the floor. As a freshman, Kristina Fahey is very versatile and talented. Those three should make the most immediate impact for us with their perimeter shooting and willingness to improve defensively. It’s a new season, lots of newcomers as mentioned above, what are you most excited about? What has surprised you the most about this team in the early part of this season, including the offseason? I get excited every year but so far I’m most impressed with our teamwork and willingness to improve. It’s a pleasure to go to practice with these student-athletes and witness their improvement and commitment to each other. Our conference and schedule are so difficult, I have no way of knowing what type of record we’ll have. However, I believe we’ll improve dramatically and compete. At this point, we’ve improved with each contest. We improved in each one of our three DI contests. We’ve had three games and have improved in each of those contests. The win at Humboldt against a quality conference opponent was a tremendous accomplishment. Candidly, we’ve handle the pressure situations very well. Hopefully, we’ll continue to build on that. With our schedule, it won’t get easier just more competitive.

Rigby’s teams have had great success at home, where they have won nearly 70% of their games since 1997. Rigby has delivered a winning season in nine of his 13 seasons at the helm, including four 20-win seasons. In his first two years at Sonoma State, Rigby led his team to back-to-back 20-plus win seasons, including a schoolrecord 23 victories in 1998-99. His teams have participated in the NCAA West Regionals six times, a feat no other basketball coach has accomplished at SSU. A true student of the game, Rigby’s squads emphasize teamwork, defense, and hustle. In 1997-98, Rigby led SSU to their first-ever conference championship and what was at the time a school record 20 wins. In addition, the team enjoyed their first trip to the NCAA tournament. He capped off the season by being named NCAC Coach of the Year. Rigby was also honored as CCAA Co-Coach of the Year after guiding his 2001-02 team to a 21-8 record and the second round of the NCAA tourney. One of the most successful high school coaches in the area, Rigby was the head coach at Ursuline High School in Santa Rosa for ten seasons. At Ursuline, he compiled an oustanding 253-54 record while capturing nine North Bay League championships and the 1992 CIF Division IV State Championship. After his stint at Ursuline, Rigby joined the staff at Santa Rosa Junior College for two years prior to his arrival at Sonoma State.

THE CCAA The California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) has been one of the nation’s most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences since its establishment in December 1938. The 12-member league is home to some of the nation’s finest NCAA Division II athletic programs in Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State East Bay, Cal State L.A., Cal State Monterey Bay, Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Stanislaus, Chico State, Humboldt State, UC San Diego, San Francisco State and Sonoma State. These institutions compete in seven women’s and six men’s CCAA-sponsored sports. Fall sports include men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. Men’s and women’s basketball are contested in the winter, and women’s tennis, men’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, softball and baseball comprise spring competition. CCAA members have won 149 NCAA Championships (101 men, 48 women) which is far and away the most of any Division II conference. On the men’s side, CCAA members have brought home at least 10 titles in swimming & diving (25), wrestling (16), track & field (13), tennis (11), and baseball (10). CCAA institutions have been very successful in the history of NCAA women’s athletics, having won 10 cross country, nine softball, six track & field, five volleyball, and five basketball national championships, as well as 13 more in four other sports. The CCAA has undergone several changes in conference membership since charter members UC Santa Barbara, Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State came together to form the league in 1938. Over the past 68 years, a number of institutions have been members of the CCAA, including Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Chapman, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Pacific, Pepperdine, UC Riverside, UC Davis and Grand Canyon University. The CCAA’s Commissioner’s Office relocated from Southern California to Walnut Creek in July of 1998. Robert. J. Hiegert is in his 14th year as the Commissioner.
