COACHES

HEAD COACH EMIRIA SALZMANN Emiria Salzmann

Dunn returns for her third season as the head coach of the Sonoma State University women’s soccer team in 2013. In two seasons at the helm, Salzmann Dunn has a record of 24-10-5, including a 19-7-4 mark in CCAA play and one CCAA and NCAA tournament appearance.

Following her career at SSU, Salzmann Dunn played semi-pro soccer with the Sacramento Storm and Sacramento Thunder (1997-99) and NEC Nijmegen of Holland (2000-01).

Last season (in 2012), Salzmann Dunn led Sonoma State to its best season in 13 years, sporting an overall record of 16-3-2 which helped the Seawolves to host the First and Second Rounds of the NCAA tournament. Prior to the NCAA’s, Sonoma State qualified for the CCAA tournament for the first time in four years, and while SSU tied UC San Diego in the title match, the Seawolves fell short of capturing the conference championships after losing in penalty kicks. It wouldn’t matter in the NCAA selection process, however, as SSU emerged as the No. 1 seed in the West Region. After a first round bye, the Seawolves fell in overtime to Western Washington.

A native of Santa Rosa, Salzmann Dunn was an all-conference and all-county honoree at Piner High School. She also played one season at Santa Rosa Junior College, where she led her team in scoring and was an all-league selection.

Salzman Dunn’s first season at Sonoma State in 2011 saw the team double their win total from the previous year and just miss out on a trip to the CCAA Championship Tournament. The Seawolves went 8-7-3 and featured three all-conference performers and two NSCAA All-Academic choices. Sonoma State was also recognized after the season with a Sportsmanship Award by the NSCAA.

Salzmann Dunn has enjoyed much success at the club level, winning countless tournaments, and from 2008 to 2010 she was the girl’s director of coaching for Santa Rosa United.

Prior to arriving at Sonoma State, Salzmann Dunn spent four seasons as head coach at Santa Rosa Junior College. Salzmann Dunn has led the Bear Cubs to Big 8 Conference championships in each of her four seasons at the helm. She was named conference coach of the year all four years and, in 2008 after guiding her team to a No. 3 national ranking, she was named NSCAA West Region and NSCAA National Coach of the Year. Her 2010 team was ranked as high as No. 4 in the nation and in four seasons she coached six All-Americans and eight All-West Region studentathletes. Salzmann Dunn played three seasons at Sonoma State, from 1994 to 1996, capping her career with NSCAA All-American honors as a senior. That season she led SSU in scoring with 16 goals and, coupled with her 15-goal output as a junior in ’95, she owns two of the three highest single-season goal totals in school history.

4

An NSCAA All-West Region selection as a junior and senior, she currently ranks second in school history with 38 goals and fourth with 83 points. This fall she will be inducted into the SSU Athletics Hall of Fame for her exploits on the pitch. “I had the privilege of playing for the greatest coaches and teams at Sonoma State, and it is such an honor to assume the head coaching position of a program that changed the course of my life,” said Salzmann Dunn. “I plan to give back to the university and the women’s soccer program what it once gave to me.”

2013 WOMEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE

Salzmann Dunn got her start in coaching in 1998 when she led her club team, Santa Rosa United Thunder, to the state cup title. The story of Salzmann Dunn and her evolving relationship with her team was turned into a book, entitled The Beautiful Game: 16 Girls And The Soccer Season That Changed Everything. Disney currently owns the movie rights to the book.

As head coach of the Sonoma County Sol from 2007 to 2009, Salzmann Dunn guided a team that competed in the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL), one of the top female leagues in the world. Salzmann Dunn’s first high school coaching assignment came at Ursuline High School in Santa Rosa, where, as co-head coach, she led her team to an NCS Championship and a No. 2 national ranking. The next year she guided her alma mater, Piner High School, as head coach. She got her first taste of coaching at the collegiate level in 2001 when she assisted former SSU head coach Peter Reynaud at Long Beach State. She helped lead the 49ers for three seasons before coming home for one season as an assistant at Sonoma State (2005). Salzmann Dunn is married to current SSU women’s soccer assistant coach Mark Dunn.

COACHING STAFF CRYSTAL HOWARD ASSISTANT COACH

Crystal Howard, who played for Sonoma State University between 2001-04 and prepped locally at nearby Montgomery High School in Santa Rosa, Calif., has returned to her roots in Sonoma County to serve as an assistant coach for the SSU women’s soccer program in 2013. Howard was a two-time First Team AllRegion selection at Sonoma State before playing semi-professionally for the Sonoma County Sol of the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL). Howard comes to Rohnert Park after spending the past two seasons (2011-12) as an assistant coach at Sierra College in Rocklin, Calif. It was there that she helped lead the Wolverines to a Final Four appearance in the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Soccer Championship Tournament in 2012. Prior to her coaching stint at Sierra, Howard was an assistant coach at Santa Rosa Junior College under current SSU head coach Emiria Salzmann Dunn for three seasons (2005-07), helping the Bear Cubs to a second-place finish in the CCCAA state championship. She also served as the head coach of the girl’s soccer team at El Molino High School in Forestville, Calif, two years prior to that. As a four-year student-athlete at Sonoma State, Howard became the all-time assists leader in program history with 30 career assists, a record that still stands today. She was a First Team All-Region selection as a freshman in 2001 and also as a senior in 2004. She graduated from SSU in 2005 with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Kinesiology and is currently pursuing her Master’s in the same field. A former standout at Montgomery HS, Howard was named the North Coast Section (NCS) Player of the Year as a senior in 2000. The Santa Rosa native holds National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) coaching diplomas in several areas, including youth, premier and goalkeeping. Howard resides in Santa Rosa with her husband -- and former SSU men’s soccer player -- Kelcey Chaidez and their one-year-old son Kace.

COACHES

KATIE TURTLE ASSISTANT COACH

Katie Turtle returns for her third consecutive season on the Sonoma State women’s soccer coaching staff in 2013, although this is her fourth season overall, as she was also an assistant coach for the team in 2005. An All-League and All-Empire selection at Ursuline High School in Santa Rosa, Turtle went on to play at Santa Rosa JC and UC Santa Barbara. Following her playing career, Turtle joined the coaching staff at Santa Rosa JC in 2003 for the first of her two stints with the Bear Cubs. In 2005, she served alongside Emiria Salzmann as an assistant under head coach Luke Oberkirch, before returning to the JC from 2007-10 as the top assistant. Turtle is also involved with Sonoma County Alliance, where she has coached since 2008.

MARK DUNN ASSISTANT COACH

Mark Dunn begins his third season as an assistant coach for the SSU women’s soccer team in 2013. A full-time firefighter, Dunn also brings some serious soccer credibility to the table. An assistant at Santa Rosa JC under Salzmann Dunn since 2008, Dunn was the boy’s varsity coach at Montgomery High School in Santa Rosa from 2007 to 2009. In ‘08, he was named the North Bay League Coach of the Year. He also has experience coaching at the club level with Santa Rosa United. Dunn is married to head coach Emiria Salzmann Dunn.

2013 WOMEN’S SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE

Sonoma State University is an NCAA Division II member and part of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and Western Water Polo Association (WWPA). Ten of SSU’s sports are in the CCAA, water polo is in the WWPA, and men’s and women’s tennis is a Division II independent. Sonoma State athletics got its start in 1964 with the school’s first men’s basketball team. Through the years, the Seawolves have had much success including national championships in 1990 (women’s soccer), 2002 (men’s soccer) and 2009 (men’s golf). MISSION STATEMENT: “The goal of the Sonoma State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is to provide a positive, equitable, and diverse environment for the student-athletes and staff. All athletic staff members are responsible for fostering these priorities via role modeling and mentoring student-athletes while upholding a competitive spirit that stresses amateurism, ethical conduct, good sportsmanship, and rules compliance. Priorities for all student-athletes include: academic excellence, competitive success, and community outreach.”
