2008 Season Preview Q & A with Head Coach Mark James What are the goals and expectations for the 2008 season? James: We already accomplished the primary goal of the year by forming the largest Sonoma State University women’s cross country team in the school’s history at 17 runners. Our secondary goal for this year is to finish a lot higher than 9th in our conference, which is where we placed the past two years. The squad is capable of achieving that goal with two runners like Katherine Bolce and Jacqui Trenkwalder leading the way. We have a very competitive conference, with the top three teams in the CCAA last year going on to place in the top four at regionals and move on to the NCAA Division II Championships. I foresee us being in the top six teams at this point.

What newcomers do you expect to step in and contribute in 2008? James: Katherine Bolce is primed to make her mark as a newcomer. The potential of freshmen runners Meaghan O’Day, Sablle Schepmann, Sammy Thomas and Carly McCready is apparent and I believe they are fully capable of running low six minute miles. Former SSU track runner Elizabeth Bloom is also a strong contender and is learning how to convert her track speed to the 6k distance.

With only a handful of returners, how will that effect team chemistry? James: We have five returners, one post graduate student, four existing upper classmen and seven freshman, so we are a big mixed group of runners. I am extremely happy with the team this year after last year’s frustrations of simply trying to form a team from scratch. The dynamics are fantastic and the team gets along great. There are pot lucks, movie nights and other team building events that we never had last year.

What are some characteristics you have noticed from the team this year? James: There is definitely a lot more camaraderie this year. I believe pre-season running camp in Bodega Bay, which included a 4-hour canoe trip down the Russian River contributed to that. Captains Kiyara Iravanian and Jacqui Trenkwalder are exceptional leaders who run at the front and provide positive running role models for our younger runners.

Mark James Head Coach • Second Season Mark James is entering his second year as head coach of Sonoma State’s cross country team. After an extensive recruiting period James welcomes 10 newcomers for the upcoming season. The team will look to continue to build upon last season’s efforts. A collegiate and professional athlete, James arrived to Sonoma State with impressive credentials. A runner and swimmer at El Molino and Montgomery High in the early 1980s, James went on to compete as a swimmer at Santa Rosa Junior College and UC Santa Cruz. While at UC Santa Cruz, James was also active with the collegiate cycling team, a skill he would put to good use over the next decade as a competitive triathlete. A ten-time finisher of the prestigious Hawaii Ironman Triathlon (1992-2001), James is a twotime champion of the Maui Ironman and he has completed the Boston Marathon twice. He also has experience in the armed forces as a member of the U.S. Navy’s Special Forces SEAL Team II and the Navy Pentathlon team. James has been the head swimming coach at El Molino High School since 2000. He took the reigns of the cross country team in 2005 and has seen his team improve both academically and athletically.

Chandra Farnham Assistant Coach • First Season Chandra Farnham is in her first year as the assistant coach for the women’s cross country team. Farnham is a 2006 graduate of Sonoma State and competed in both cross country and track and field. She is the last cross country athlete to garner all-west region from Sonoma State, accomplishing this feat in 2003. Chandra also works for Fleet Feet sports in Santa Rosa, as their triathalon and 10k coach.
