2016

By The Numbers

2002 NCAA DIVISION II CHAMPIONS The 2002 Men’s Soccer Team enjoyed one of the most memorable runs in the program’s history. Following a heartbreaking penalty kick defeat in the CCAA Championship Semifinals, there was thought that a post-season run might not be in the cards. However, when the brackets were announced, the Seawolves were included in the field and slated to face a highly-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills squad on the road. Sonoma trailed 2-0 midway through the second half before Tony Bussard, a 2012 Hall of Fame inductee, scored three times to propel the Seawolves into the national quarterfinals and set the stage for an improbable run. The team captured just the second NCAA title in the department’s history with a 4-3 win over Southern New Hampshire. Several student-athletes earned All-America honors and head coach Marcus Ziemer was named the National Coach of the Year.

Seawolf Soccer Field is the on-campus home of the Sonoma State men’s and women’s soccer teams. Over the years, the field has played host to many conference and NCAA tournament games featuring both prestigious Sonoma State soccer programs. Nestled next to a grove of redwood trees, right in the middle of campus, Seawolf Soccer Field is an excellent venue for the campus community and the entire area to watch top notch NCAA soccer. The Seawolves have received strong support from the community, ranking among the top ten in the nation in terms of Division II attendance. In 2003, the year after the SSU men’s soccer team captured the national title, they led the nation in attendance, averaging 515 fans per game. The largest crowd in school history, 1,287 fans, was present on November 24, 2002 to support the Seawolves in their 3-0 NCAA quarterfinal win over Midwestern State. The win sent SSU on to the National Final Four and set off a frenzied on-field celebration.

DID YOU KNOW? The term “hat trick” first appeared in 1858 in cricket, to describe a player taking three wickets with three consecutive deliveries. Fans held a collection for the player and presented him with a hat bought with the proceeds. The term was used in print for the first time in 1878. The term was eventually adopted by many other sports including hockey, association football (soccer), water polo and team handball.

All-Americans Andrew Ziemer

The only two-time First Team All-American in program history, Ziemer scored 28 goals in 1991 as he led the Cossacks to the NCAA Division II final. Among his exploits in the NCAA Tournament that year was a hat trick against Missouri-St. Louis. His 28 goals and 69 points from ‘91 remain the school’s records and he’s 2nd all-time in career goals scored (44) despite playing at SSU just two seasons. Ross Middlemiss

Middlemiss played four seasons for the Seawolves, but it was his remarkable senior season - one of the greatest in program history - that will be remembered most. In addition to earning CCAA Player of the Year honors with 18 goals and nine assists, Middlemiss was named a First Team Academic All-America, becoming one of the only student-athletes to ever earn First Team status on the field and in the classroom. He also set a school record with four goals in a win over Cal State San Bernardino. Year 2005 (Fr.) 2006 (So.) 2007 (Jr.) 2008 (Sr.) Total

A four-year contributor, Johnson took over as the team’s No. 1 goalkeeper as a sophomore, posting 10 shutouts as SSU went a perfect 14-0-0 in league play on their way to a 19-3-3 overall record. His All-America season came in 2008 when he delivered 11 clean sheets and a microscopic 0.62 goals against average. Johnson stands alone as the school’s alltime leader with 261 saves and 32 shutouts.
