brown-McConney jessica brown-McConney Who is Jessica Brown-McConney and what is Joyce Ann’s Creation all about? Why did you choose the dessert business specifically? I am a go-getter, an overachiever, an innovator and believer but most importantly I am a hard worker. Joyce Ann’s Creation is about providing the best edibles with luxurious style. Although it may sound a bit cliché, the dessert business chose me. If you asked me ten years ago what my career was going to be, the answer would have been a lawyer. The love for desserts and custom cakes came naturally. I literally just dove right in and took a chance having no real knowledge of what I was doing. Thereafter, there’s nothing else I could imagine myself doing other than growing within the cake industry. How did you start your journey as an entrepreneur? When did you know this was your calling? My journey as an entrepreneur first started out with me making gift baskets. I had the idea to do these elaborate and classy gift baskets unlike any other. The idea at the time seemed to be somewhat revolutionary, that is until one day I was asked if I knew how to make a fondant covered cake. At the time, I knew nothing about fondant and its many possibilities. My first cake took a full 24 hours with no sleep to complete. The very next day I took a look at what I had created and it was as if I had never felt more accomplished than at that moment. It is then that I knew this was what I was meant to do. What advice would you give an aspiring entrepreneur? The best advice I could possibly give to those looking to become entrepreneurs is once you have a vision, don’t be afraid to take the risk. Choose what it is you are passionate about and DON’T BE AFRAID TO FAIL. Failure is a part of the process and ultimately leads to your success. What were the biggest initial hurdles to building your

business and how did you overcome them? The biggest hurdle in the beginning for me was figuring out whether or not this could work. Once I dug deeper into the industry a whole new world opened up. After finding out how in demand all types of edibles were, the rest was figuring out how to do it differently than everyone else. How did you build a consumer culture around your product? Each time I was asked to do a cake or dessert table items, I would do more with the idea and go a bit further than they expected. Once customers saw what I could do, it became sort of a must from me. Now customers know what they are getting with me and have built a trust for my creativity. So building a “vibe” so to speak around my products and making my clients feel special is one of the best ways I have built a consumer culture around all that I offer. What has been your greatest moment of success? Failure? To be honest, my biggest moment of success isn’t money related. It was once I decided to focus solely on my business and was able to be a mother full time, all while doing what it is that I loved and felt passionate about. When doing the things that bring me the most joy and gratitude, and creating products that people can enjoy and feel excited about were all within my own control, that’s when I felt the greatest moment of success. My biggest failure for me was starting too late because of fear of failure and the lack of belief in myself. What do you know today that you wish you would have known when you first got started as an entrepreneur? F a c e  y o u r  f e a r s .   B e l i e v e  i n yourself, even when it seems no one else believes in you and your vision. Challenge yourself. Most of all, TAKE THE RISK.

patrice jordan Who is Patrice Jordan and what are your businesses all about? HER SECRET VAULT is an online boutique. We bring Fresh, New, Modern, Classy and Sophisticated looks to every woman. Her Secret Vault bar is a traveling bar company. We provide a full bar step-up with custom drink menu for all events, no event is to small or to big for us to handle. How did you start your journey as an entrepreneur? When did you know this was your calling? I started my journey officially as an entrepreneur about 3 years ago! I ran into an old school mate on the train about 6 years ago. At the time he had 3 successful businesses at age 26 and he was in need of an assistant, so I started working for him as his assistant for $500 a month. It wasn’t about the money as it was about the experience to get to his level in business. I eventually became his right hand woman until he sold his company in 2013. I then branched out and started my first company in security in 2013. Her Secret Vault followed right after in 2013 & Her Secret Vault Bar was started in 2017. I knew this was my calling when I started working for him. He molded me into the woman I am today. What advice would you give an aspiring entrepreneur? The advice I would give to aspiring women is to never give up on yourself. Believe in yourself when no one else believes in you. Life is never easy but your back story will become your success / motivational story to someone else someday. What were the biggest initial hurdles to building your

business and how did you overcome them? T h e  b i g g e s t  h u rd l e s  I ’ v e  e x p e r i e n c e d  w a s  i n  t h e management of people’s personalities & not taking things people say personally. I don’t think you will every get to a place where you are able to master people’s personalities as far as taking things personal, no matter what good or bad things people think of you. You know your heart and so does GOD! At times, people will paint you out to be someone you’re not but you have to always remember who you are even in the mist of the storm. How did you build a consumer culture around your product? I built a consumer culture around my brand by being myself, very attentive to people, supporting as many people as possible and genuinely wanting everyone around me to win. What has been your greatest moment of success? Failure? My greatest moment of success would have to be the ability to provide jobs for people to help them support their family! My moment of failure will have to be not paying more attention to my very first business when it was at its highest time. What do you know today that you wish you would have known when you first got started as an entrepreneur? I wish I would have known back then how to let money work for me and not work for money!

keli smith Who is Keli Smith and what is your company Kaike all about? Why did you choose the self-care (beauty/skin/ hair) business specifically? I am a wife and mompreneur of 4, and the founder of KAIKE Bath + Body Bakery which is a cruelty-free and vegan skincare brand with a focus on good clean fun. It is our mission to create products that are good for your body and the environment, in using only clean all-natural + vegan ingredients, and in finding every opportunity to have a little fun celebrating our natural beauty. I started in the beauty and skincare industry as a happy accident. During my second pregnancy, I began to suffer with chronic migraines. It was around this same time that the natural hair industry was taking off and the movie ‘Good Hair’ was released. I can still recall the scene where Chris Rock essentially melted a soda can with a relaxer. I wore my hair relaxed at that time and began to wonder if the chemicals in relaxers, and in other body products, were harmful to my health and contributing to my migraines. That led me to begin creating my own hair and skincare products. How did you start your journey as an entrepreneur? When did you know this was your calling? After some time of creating my own products, I began sharing them with friends, who urged me to sell them. That’s what friends are supposed to say though, right? After enough people said it though, I began to take it seriously and began the process of launching KAIKE Bath + Body Bakery. What advice would you give an aspiring entrepreneur? Find your tribe. Surround yourself with the right people that will motivate, encourage, teach, and hold you accountable.

Some may be supportive friends, but some should be other entrepreneurs that can give valuable business expertise. What were the biggest initial hurdles to building your business and how did you overcome them? The biggest hurdle in building a business, as well as with everything else, is your perception toward it. Everything is hard if you think it is. Change the way you think about it. Yes, it will take hard work and a significant time commitment, but it’ll be worth it. This is another reason why your tribe is so important. You don’t need another person telling you why you can’t do it. Instead, find and value those who help you get it done. How did you build a consumer culture around your product? When I initially launched KAIKE, I knew that I didn’t want it to be just a line of skincare products, but a lifestyle brand. One of the main pillars of the KAIKE vision is fun, and we share that as much as we can through our social media and interactions with our customers. People are beginning to catch on and join in on the fun with us and it’s really exciting! What has been your greatest moment of success? My greatest moments come when someone tells me that they’ve enjoyed a KAIKE product, or that it has become a staple in their skincare routine. It is overwhelming to think that someone enjoys something I’ve created to the point that they want to spend money for it, repeatedly. I’m truly grateful! What do you know today that you wish you would have known when you first got started as an entrepreneur? I know, without a doubt, that God’s plans for your life are bigger than you can imagine.

fashion hendricks Explain to our audience who Fashion Hendricks is. I’m an expert Weaveologist concerned most with applying sew in extensions in a limited amount of time to make the client love how they look and feel. What makes you different? I do not keep my clients in the salon all day. My salon is not run like a typical black owed hair salon. I pride myself on that. If your appt is at 2pm that’s when it really starts. Clients really appreciate being in and out, able to actually make a plan for the rest of their day instead of sitting around wondering what time they will get out of the salon. Yes there are rules to follow but the time thing is what clients have told me they really appreciate that part of me and my business. Describe your brand. My Brand is keeping it real and managing clients expectations.. Some may say its a dry humor but id like to call it honesty and no nonsense. If a client asks me for a certain style of weave, I have to explain to them why that may or may not be the right choice. Ive never been the kind of stylist that gives a client what they want just because they are paying for it. If you ask for gray hair (thats currently a trend) and I know that that particular color will not be right for you, we are not doing it. Why did you choose this line of work outside of it being your passion? I love making others smile. The look clients have when they are finished at the studio makes my day. I really do not feel like it’s work. Its fun for me. I get to chat with the clients and help them with any issues they have even if it is not related to hair. How did you start your journey? When I started my hair journey it was all a total accident. I

wanted to be a veterinarian when I was growing up. At the age of 17, in my senior year of high school I did a friends hair like salt n pepper’s asymmetrical bob style. We were really just playing around but my crazy friend actually let me cut her hair. We even added a piece of weft hair in it. People loved it and after I was doing client after client. I really enjoyed it. When I graduated from high school I went straight to hair school and the rest is history. What advice would you give an aspiring entrepreneur? Be super dependable and always on time. Nothing is worse than dealing with a business owner who doesn’t keep their word. What were the biggest initial hurdles to building your brand and how did you overcome them? The biggest hurdle to building my brand is hiring. I swear it’s been my achilles heel.. Stylists just do not know how to come to work on time. Nothing has frustrated me more. How have I overcome it? I haven’t LOL! I’m still looking though. I am optimistic about finding other stylists who are licensed that can show up to work on time and are just as passionate about helping clients achieve their hair goals as I am. What has been your greatest moment of success? I can say I have not had a particular “moment” of success but my biggest success is being able to grow my business from literally nothing. I had zero clients when I arrived in NYC 7 years ago. Now I’m booked for months at a time. It really feels good. Failure? My biggest failure... I have yet to experience one. I do not look at obstacles as a failure but as a learning lesson. If I had to dig deep to think of one, I’ll say I wish I had used my time on Reality TV as a bigger platform for my business. I was too busy socializing. I’m a talker so that part came natural.

kalilah middleton braiding all the womens hair in my family. I felt a sense of pride when they responded so well to the end results. That’s why I’m such a results driven person.

Explain to our audience who you are. What makes you different? Why did you choose this line of work outside of it being your passion? My name is Kalilah Middleton and I’m the owner of She’s So Natural Hair Salon in Hollis, Queens. She’s So Natural Hair is a Natural Hair Salon catering to all ethnicities. What makes my salon so unique and different is that not only do we provide hair services, we are big on education. During our clients visit, we educate our clients about products, hair care treatments and hair tips specifically for their hair types. I chose to be a Natural Hair Stylist because a lot of my friends and family had natural hair. When I was 13 my cousin taught me how to press hair and braid. I remember feeling excited and anxious to do more hair. I started pressing and

What advice would you give an aspiring entrepreneur? There will be a lot of road blocks. Don’t let the road blocks stop you from achieving your goals. Don’t expect everyone to support you. YOU are your biggest cheerleader. What were the biggest initial hurdles to building your brand and how did you overcome them? Abandoning a secure job and starting all over. What has been your greatest moment of success? I would have to say my greatest moment of success was when I received the keys to my salon. Knowing that all of my long years of hard work payed off was a blessing. What do you know today that you wish you would have known when you first got started as an entrepreneur? I wish I would have known the amount of people that dwell on your failures and down falls.

of grooming goods to support that the society of men would take pride in owning; and that the salon & barber professionals would appreciate and support. What advice would you give an aspiring entrepreneur? Be genuine. Be brave. Avoid gimmick. Stay humble. Express gratitude. Work smarter, not harder. Slow down to speed up. What were the biggest initial hurdles to building your business and how did you overcome them? People and planning make things happen so, find great people. Operational effectiveness, establishing processes and developing systems are all key challenges of entrepreneurship.

18.21 man made What is 18.21 Man Made? The 18.21 Man Made barrel house is owned and operated by three hardworking gentlemen with a passion for making premium grooming goods that the society of Men will take pride in owning. Along our journey, we noticed that the landscape of men’s grooming goods had become somewhat mundane and all shared similar characteristics. We became inspired  by the spirit of prohibition era bootlegging and began to bootleg our own meticulous grooming mixtures. The 18.21 Man Made namesake is an homage to the 18th amendment which started the prohibition and was later repealed by the 21st amendment. How did you start your journey as an entrepreneur? When did you know this was your calling? The three founders of 18.21 Man Made — Angel del Solar, Aston Lafon and David del Solar — have all had other experiences as entrepreneurs. Whether that was as a salon owner, manufacturer, importer or distributor. We even have a deconstruction Chef on the team which, brings a completely different perspective to crafting fresh product recipes. Prior to starting 18.21 Man Made we owned a distribution and education business called Credible Culture and supported the top tier salons in Texas with premium retail offerings and educational opportunities to grow their business and enhance the service experience for their guests. It was at that time that we noticed men we’re looking for special grooming services and retail offerings and many times ended up at a salon. But, the salons we’re not always prepared for the men and the salon retail was mostly crafted for women. This was confusing to us and to the salon guest. So, we set out to create an uncommon, well crafted range

Manufacturing can sometimes feel impossible. Especially when you are trying to go against the grain and create something special. People tend to have a desire to “play it safe” and steer you towards a common product experience. Inconsistency and delays with manufacturing can put someone right out of business quick so, make sure to achieve a high level of consistency before aggressively expanding your customer base. You need great products to keep those customers. How did you build a consumer culture around your product? First it takes a product that people find impulsively interesting, with genuine messaging and a story that they can relate to. And we have to create the emotional connection with an uncommon product experience that they are inspired to share. Products also have to live up to the hype or expectation and offer a high level of performance so that the consumer is happy to buy the product again and tell their friends about it. We are honored to make our customers happy because, if we can earn their trust and support then we can continue to have an opportunity to do what we love, which is making premium, uncommon products that people will take pride in owning. What has been your greatest moment of success? Failure? We are humbled and honored to spoil him with our goods and we appreciate the opportunity to create a good life for our families. We don’t really take much time to celebrate successes. That’s something we might need to work on. As business owners that greatly value our customers, there is always something that needs our attention or an improvement to provide a better experience for our customers or to grow the business. We keep pushing forward and don’t spend much time looking back. What do you know today that you wish you would have known when you first got started as an entrepreneur? Get out of your own way. In the beginning you do everything your business needs to get it started but, there becomes a point where you have to bring in others and rely on their efforts and expertise so that the founders can focus on the bigger picture. The thing about self discovery though, is that it can sometimes take too long to figure things out.

phill thomas From the year 2005 to 2011 there was a boutique called ‘Haystack’ in the heart of Brooklyn Heights, NY. For over 5 years she showcased unique gift items & furniture to all in the NYC area. With the name ‘Brooklyn Barn’ we pay homage to our beginnings at Haystack where the entrepreneurial spirit was cultivated. With the creation of Brooklyn Barn, it’s our goal to make art viable and practically appreciated to the average Joe on a day to day basis. Hence the tagline, “Art made practical. Style made functional.” Three things you can expect with every product that is featured: 1. Cool & Creative —Yes I know its actually 2 (laughs). But we consider them to really go hand in hand. By cool & creative it simply means whatever you get from BB is going to look good and be aesthetically pleasing to the eye. 2. Original — The products featured through Brooklyn Barn will be always exclusively available only through BB, or very few other retailers will carry the same item. I believe originality and rarity will always bring value and true appreciation. 3. Quality — All items are not only guaranteed to be well made, but to be domestically manufactured. One of the issues I believe we have as a country, is that we don’t make anything anymore. In my own small way I hope to make a difference with that by insuring all items are “Made in the USA.” I hope to encourage others to be the same when obtaining a product from Brooklyn Barn. Be a person that is Cool & creative, strive to look your best. Be a person that is Original, be that best you, you were created to be. Be a person of quality, be genuine and have integrity because they will shape your character.

jomar beauchamp Growing up I remembered getting acne and hating it. I tried anything that could possibly help. I had prescription strength acne medicine that would do nothing but irritate my skin and cause me to break out more. The store-bought stuff would work for a while, then I would have to switch to a new product. I was getting tired of having to constantly look for the new “ it ” product in order to have nice skin, so I started researching natural skin care products, buying them and using them on myself. I finally started to see some good results! I would give suggestions to any of my friends who were going through skin related problems. One day after a conversation with my sister, she suggested that I start selling the things that I made for myself since I’m always giving people advice. I started looking into how much it would be to make and sell natural skin care products and saw that it was definitely something I could do. I began to give out samples to friends, family and coworkers. I was getting a lot of positive feedback so I knew that my products were working. My co-workers and friends are now my repeat customers! I am happy to have 1 product that really gets results and is cost efficient (highest priced item being 15 dollars). Butter Skin By Jo is made to help you have you’re best skin without breaking your pockets.

I’ve been in the wonderful world of beauty for over 15 years in Portland, Or. I started this company to help professionals across the country put their best face forward. A great brow and skincare regimen is the best foundation in any woman’s wardrobe. In this competitive world we must make grooming a top priority! Did you know that women in America who practice a regular beauty maintenance are not only open to more opportunity, but earn approximately 15% more per year than those who don’t? I know that its hard to find a person that listens to your specific needs and understands. You can rest assured, knowing that after fulfilling over 10,000 services for happy customers, I am delighted to have relocated to Manhattan to serve a wealth of professionals in the area!

Vibrate Higher Boutique is a small Brooklyn-based spa-like company. In 2015, we were created to help all those who tend to put themselves last. The hard workers, the care takers and the ones with aspirations who tend to forget to take care of themselves and end up with low vibrations. With scents like ucalyptus and our most popular, lavender, our products will help to relax, restore and recharge your physical and spiritual body allowing you to vibrate higher as you chase after your dreams.

My personal passion is working with high-risk elementary students teaching reading and math. I currently tutor students in Harlem at Ps 197. I am so glad to have the opportunity to serve you. See you soon!
