Innovative Leadership

As part of a work team, we have extraordinary knowledge and expertise. We are skilled practitioners in jobs and know how to get the job done. As leaders, we ask questions such as, what are we trying to achieve and why? How do we accomplish our goals? What people and resources do we need to make it happen? Innovation leadership weaves together traditional leadership processes with principles of innovative thinking to help shift our understanding of situations and open the door for new approaches and solutions. This session will explore six innovative thinking skills and how leaders need to apply them to create innovative responses to change and challenges in teams, departments and the organization. 09/01

Smartphone Overtime: Monitoring Wage & Hour Issues in the Modern Workplace MERIDIAN TECHNOLOGY CENTER

The eight-to-five workday is quickly going by the wayside, due in large part to the popularity of smartphones. The work environment continues to creep beyond the office to the car, the home and anywhere with a steady wireless signal. As this change ensues, employers must utilize advanced planning and clear policies to minimize the risk of overtime claims from an increasingly connected workforce. Madalene Witterholt, a director for Crowe & Dunlevy in Tulsa, will discuss how our uberconnected behavior matches up with the Fair Labor Standards Act. She will also discuss the change of exemption status and how it could impact your workplace.

From Cheerleaders to Vampires - Elements of Employee Engagement

Employee engagement is getting a lot of hype right now and for good reason. By definition, this term refers to the emotional commitment employees have to their organization and its goals. This means engaged employees don’t work just for a paycheck or just for the next promotion. They actually care about their work and their company, and they’re willing to offer up discretionary effort to do their job right, consistently. This session will help you better understand how employee engagement is affecting your workplace. You will learn: • Best practices for cultivating an environment of increased team productivity and motivation, regardless of personality or role • Tips to identify the cheerleaders and vampires within your organization, and the difference between employee satisfaction and engagement • The role of both the manager and the team for sustained engagement • How engagement level is directly tied to performance and attendance 10/11

A company’s dress code can set the tone for employees and the customers you serve. Every workplace has a different dress code for different reasons. Some companies regulate everything from shoe type to skirt length while others are open to creative expressions such as piercings and tattoos. Either way, interpretation of these expectations can lead to some murky and challenging situations. In this session, a panel of leaders from local businesses will unpack how they’ve handled their dress code issues. Hear the pros and cons of a formal policy versus a more lenient and creative approach, learn ways to educate employees of your expectations and get tips on how to deal with those who push the boundaries. 11/08

The Art of Asking Better Questions

Strong leaders know that asking the right questions can be transformational when it comes to leading others. Regardless of whether you are a seasoned leader at the top of your game or a newcomer wanting to take the first steps into leadership, this session will change the way you look at questions and improve your leadership life. 08/26

BUSINESS Clarifying Your Team’s Purpose and Strategy Today’s busy leaders often find it hard to schedule time for learning and development, and sometimes learning is easier if you can focus on one skill at a time. The Four Imperatives of Great Leadership

In the ever-increasing war for talent, the stakes have never been higher. Companies cannot afford to lose the knowledge and abilities that exist on their team. Organizations that want to retain their best and brightest must have leaders who understand the radically new paradigm from which the knowledge worker operates. The Four Imperatives of Great Leaders workshop provides the foundation for those in leadership positions to think, act and lead from this new paradigm. Participants in The Four Imperatives of Great Leaders program learn powerful concepts and leave with tools and skills to help them: • Inspire trust, as well as the knowledge to identify and address the four chronic problems that undermine success • Create an environment where productivity and creativity thrive • Positively respond to team feedback, dramatically improve team relationships, and adeptly - and positively - use accountability in the drive toward excellence 09/22

Inspiring Trust

For organizations whose competitive edge depends on speed to market and worker productivity, the hidden costs of low-trust work environments can rob them of their competitive advantage and credibility. Low trust issues like bureaucracy, politics, redundancy and high turnover rates can negate speed-to-market advantages and bring productivity to a screeching halt. Inspiring Trust teaches those in leadership positions why building a high trust work environment must be as essential as any other measurable economic goal of the organization. As a path to a new culture is forged, organizations will reap immediate as well as long-term high trust dividends in the form of: • Increased speed to market • Increased shareholder value • Accelerated growth • Enhanced innovation • Better execution • Heightened loyalty 10/27

Employees who don’t understand how their jobs align with the organization’s key goals and strategies are more likely to produce work that is simply adequate rather than exceptional. When management leaders fail to ensure that employees have a clear understanding of how their contributions support the overall purpose, time and resources are squandered on aimless pursuits and busywork. Create a system to Clarify Your Team’s Purpose and Strategy. This powerful program helps leaders understand that clarity at every level is critical to an organization’s success. They gain a clear understanding of their own purpose and how their job fits into the organization’s strategy and mission. Leaders who attend the program will gain: • The ability to connect their team’s purpose to the mission, values and strategy of the organization • The means to help team members understand their jobs and how they are key contributors to the organization’s goals • Skills, tools and a plan for leading their team in executing on the organization’s most important goals • A clear team purpose statement to implement with their teams 11/17

CENTER FOR BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT Support for Entrepreneurs and Small Businesses

Center for Business Development

The process of converting an idea into a business venture requires intensity, focus and a support network. Our mission is to help entrepreneurs build strong businesses, and we do that in three ways.

Business Consulting & Coaching We provide business consulting and coaching to early-stage companies and aspiring entrepreneurs. We’ll help you explore the feasibility of an idea, identify a new market for your product or service, evaluate your marketing, understand how to hire the right employees and more.

Business Incubation When You’re Starting a Business Business incubation is a focused process that includes management guidance, technical assistance and consulting for young, growing companies. Companies can locate their business in the Center for Business Development as a residential or virtual tenant. Residential tenants have access to services and rent dedicated office or lab space for up to three years. Virtual tenants have access to our services but do not rent space.

Entrepreneur Training and Events Why learn from your mistakes if you don’t have to? We provide several opportunities for entrepreneurs and small business owners to listen and learn from each other. We also partner with local chambers of commerce to bring education and training events to the communities we serve.
