Throughout the process of deciding and what to base my typeface on, I was really interested in fashion design and interior design. I was researching the most well-known and I came across a designer named Ilse Crawford. She is an interior designer based in London. Her simple designs caught my eye and I really loved her minimalistic yet classical modern style. I also remember seeing her featured in an episode of the Netflix Original, Abstract: The Art of Design. I continued to look into Ilse more and found her studio called Studioilse. I wasn’t that pleased with the design of her website. The typeface used on her website was a plain, san serif. So, by giving her a new typeface I thought I could really show her style and her philosophy of why she designs the way she does. I wanted this typeface to illustrate her passion for making people feel comfortable and connected in a space.

As I started to explore Ilse’s website I saw that she really loved textures, colors and patterns. Her style is described as a warm English feel with mixtures of classic modern touches. She also throws in a lot of her quirky, whimsical pieces too. Many of her designs have bold, contrasting factors and that’s how I want my typeface to reflect her. I really enjoyed some of her products and decided to use the shape of the glass bottles from the Sinnerling Collection for some inspiration.

To fully represent Ilse Crawford’s style I wanted to use a serif with high contrasting letters. The serif also shows the small whimsical touches that she puts in most of her interiors. I was inspired by the typefaces Didot and Bodoni when creating my typeface so I could create the perfect serifs and curves.

A challenge I came across when designing my typeface was with the majuscule B. It was difficult to find the right arch of the curve and how small the upper bowl needed to be in comparison to the lower bowl. I completed the B after designing the majuscule P so that made it easier to get the proportions correct.

After sketching and lots of brainstorming I completed my final typeface that I called Knit. I called my typeface Knit because of how passionate Ilse is about people coming together and building relationships. The typeface will compliment her famous interiors and her unique style. Knit will be used for all of Ilse Crawford’s packaging, branding, web-design, and signage.
