The push and pull of Western Mediterranean’s cultural, religious and political past has created a vibrant and eclectic mix of sights and sounds. Modern fast-paced cities and quiet hilltop villages. Velasquez masterpieces hang alongside Salvador Dali’s surrealism. Friends sharing tapas in noisy café’s alongside refined Michelin starred cuisine delicately served in some of the world’s best restaurants. All fused together with a landscape rich in panoramic vistas, saltwater lagoons, agricultural farmland and vineyards. Meander through the pastel-coloured and steep alley streets in Lisbon and stop to admire the splendid views of the river and city. Contemplate the beauty of Franciso de Goya’s painted frescoes in the quiet and calm Oratorio De La Santa Cueva in Cadiz. Whatever you do, this region will invoke one feeling – passion.

This interesting Roman Forum remained buried for over 20 centuries until excavations in 2008 into the hillside revealed an entire block of Roman buildings. Highlights here include a thermal bathing complex, atrium, and the Decumano Calzada Romana, a section of the Roman road that originally joined the harbour and Forum. The paintings on the walls of the banqueting hall in the atrium and the mosaics in the baths are of particular note. call Silversea or visit Silversea.com CHIC OMANTIC T OWNS

SILVER SHORE Sète,RECOMMENDS…CONCIERGEFrance

The fishing village of Sète serves as gateway to Montpellier, in the North. Other noteworthy destinations in this area include Carcassone, Aigues Mortes, the Abbaye de Fontfroide, and Pezenas. For a look at the real fisherman’s life, however, stay right where you are. Sète is the Mediterranean’s biggest fishing port. Canals winding through town make it fun to stroll around, and there are a number of good walking paths leading to the beach (about 30 minutes to the west). Plage de la Corniche has calm, pristine waters that are perfect for swimming. For a panoramic view of the area, climb Mont St-Clair or Les Pierres Blanches and pick a beach to settle down on.

Luxury yachts bob up and down in the glittering harbour of Monte Carlo. Multi-coloured awnings shade shoppers as they rest outside one of the many café’s of Saint Tropez. For those who have satiated their need for the celebrity-like lifestyle, there is a quieter side to the Riviera. It’s called La Serenissima, “the most serene,” a reference to the majesty, wisdom, and immense power of this city that was for centuries the mistress of trade between Europe and the Orient. Built largely on water by men who both defied and loved the sea, Venice is unlike any other town. No matter how many times you’ve seen it in movies or on TV, the real thing is more startlingly beautiful than you could ever imagine. Its landmarks, the Basilica di San Marco and the Palazzo Ducale, are exotic mixes of Byzantine, Gothic, and Renaissance styles. Shimmering sunlight and silvery mist soften every perspective here, and you understand how the city became renowned in the Renaissance for its artists’ rendering of color. It’s full of secrets, inexpressibly romantic, and at times given over to pleasure. For fares or more information please call Silversea or visit Silversea.com

The home of ancient history and vibrant cities, Italy has some of the best landscapes, landmarks and archaeological sites in Europe. Elegant statues carved in smooth marble, rolling hills lined with Cypress trees and, of course, some of the best cuisine available in the Mediterranean. Swirl your fork around scrumptious spaghetti, walk amongst the ghostly ruins of the Roman Empire and hear the busy comings and goings of Vespa’s as they fly around cobbled streets. Croatia too can also boast some remarkable sights. Stroll through Hvar’s magnificent main square Trg Sveti Stjepan – Dalmatia’s largest piazza, or take in the stunning coastal views from the ramparts of the beautiful fortified city of Dubrovnik. A truly authentic experience.

Narrow, sloped streets wind down into sleepy harbours. Bleached-white buildings reflect waters which sparkle like diamonds under sensational sunsets. All this awaits you in the timeless, laid back beauty of the Aegean Sea. Lift your eyes 200 feet above the city of Athens to the Parthenon, and behold architectural perfection that has not been surpassed in 2,500 years. Soak up the cosmopolitan atmosphere once enjoyed by Jackie-O in the cool Mykonos breeze or relax on one of the glorious sandy beaches Kusadasi has to offer.

Undoubtedly the most extraordinary island in the Aegean, crescent-shape Santorini remains a mandatory stop on the Cycladic tourist route-even if it’s necessary to enjoy the sensational sunsets, the fascinating excavations, and the dazzling white towns with a million other travellers. Arriving by boat, you are met by one of the world’s truly breathtaking sights, the caldera: a crescent of cliffs, striated in black, pink, brown, white, and pale green, rising 1,100 feet, with the white clusters of the towns of Fira and Ia perched along the top. The encircling cliffs are the ancient rim of a still-active volcano, and you are sailing east across its flooded caldera.

There’s a reason why playwrights, politicians, authors and Royals have frequented the shores that surround the Black Sea. Visit palaces perched on the hilltops which surround the beautiful resort of Yalta and explore the exotic landscape with its diversity of trees and plant species in the Danube Delta UNESCO Heritage Site.

LONG LOST EMPIRES, LITERARY FIGURES & GOLDEN MINARETS

Though it’s often remarked that Turkey straddles Europe and Asia, it’s really the city of Istanbul that does the straddling. European Istanbul is separated from its Asian suburbs by the Bosphorus, the narrow channel of water that connects the Black Sea, north of the city, to the Sea of Marmara in the south. What will strike you more than the meeting of East and West in Istanbul, though, is the juxtaposition of the old and the new, of tradition and modernity. Office towers creep up behind historic old palaces; donkey-drawn carts vie with shiny BMWs for dominance of the streets; and the Grand Bazaar competes with Western-style boutiques and shopping malls. At dawn, when the muezzin’s call to prayer rebounds from ancient minarets, there are inevitably a few hearty revelers still making their way home from nightclubs while other residents kneel in prayer. Cappadocia, the crossroads of Asia and Europe for thousands of years, is where more than a dozen civilisations and cultures have lived. The people of Cappadocia carved elaborate multi-level cave cities beneath the surface of the earth and only came to the surface to tend to their fields. When Christianity arrived here, its followers worshipped in rock-hewn churches that became a unique art form. Even today, some of the cave structures still serve as homes, shops and restuarants. An overnight stay at the Museum Hotel is sure to be a highlight of your exploration of these mystical caves.
