VictoriaQueen Now I get it. Now I understand why Cunard ships are held in such high esteem. Every cruiseline claims that one or two aspects of their product are unique, special, ground-breaking or industry leading. In the main it is true, every cruiseline is individual and every ship has its special highlights. For forty years I have listened to the wonderful things people had to say about ‘The Queens’ resulting in me having such a high expectation and just having to sail upon one of these global icons of travel.
My time came this summer and Queen Victoria was my ‘Queen’ of choice. As I checked in and boarded, the key memories of past conversations with lifelong Cunard fan club members circled around the front of my thoughts.
“Will it be as grand as they said”? “Will it be just another beautiful ship”? “Will it be as polished and refined as they all said”? “Will I feel as special as they said”? “What will be the wow factor if any”?

Afternoon tea: On Queen Victoria, if you are seduced by the idea of spoiling yourself for an hour chatting in an environment that can only be described as classically elegant whilst tasting light morsels of home baked produce fit for a king, make your way to the Queens Room at around 4pm. The gentle sounds of chatter and china crockery are an accompaniment to the musicians that perform harp solos and string quartet classics.
Once on board I collated my first impressions to my mental notebook, uncontrollably comparing Queen Victoria to all the other great ships I have experienced in the past forty years. Uncharacteristically, I had toured with a positively cynical frame of mind in order to find the faults to ensure I did not delude myself and get carried away as the ‘fan club’ seemed to.
I only took an hour, probably less until I was a member of the fan club. This was the best ship I had been on. This ship was grand, special, splendidly different, iconic and historic without being stuffy and old f ashioned. This ship deserves her five star status.
Entertainment: I thoroughly enjoyed the two lectures that I attended. It appears that this daytime entertainment is also regarded as vital to many fellow guests. The diversity of topics was intriguing and both refreshing and educationally Istimulating.amnotanight
On Deck: I was fascinated by the Cunard ability to separate themselves from the rest just by what they put out on their deck spaces. Standard sunbeds and chairs? Not on Queen Victoria. The furniture is wood, real dark quality wood, beautifully crafted and topped with cushioned pads that gave a feeling of refined privilege. I love to swim: Everyone has their number one, must have item in any hotel and on board any ship. For me a swim or two per day reminds me I am on holiday. Queen Victoria has a wonderful outdoor exercise pool complete with unlimited luxury quality body sized towels. In addition there are numerous Jacuzzis and a spa treatment pool situated within the Royal Spa. All are spotless and all are heated to just the right temperature.

Antigua, Caribbean A ‘beach with an island in the middle’ is a great way to describe this charming Caribbean Island. Antigua boasts a beach for every day of the year and some of the finest white sandy beaches in the Caribbean so you’ll definitely find one with your name on it. Explore on your own Your cruise ship will dock right in the heart of the capital St Johns so it is very easy for you to go exploring on your own. The town itself is very beautiful, with houses with white balconies and busy streets. Look out for the Government House, a fine example of a colonial residence set amid beautiful lawns and gardens and the Anglican Cathedral of St John, rising massively from among the mahogany trees in its churchyard. Make sure you visit the colourful local market, great for local produce, gifts, people watching and taking photos.
The most famous attraction I would definitely recommend Antigua’s most famous attraction Nelson’s Dockyard in English Harbour which is situated about 12 miles from St Johns. Today, the dockyard is not only preserved for posterity, but is a haven for modern yachts and motor cruisers docked in the calm waters. At the entrance is a huge water-catchment tank with low walls covered with the initials of many sailors of bygone days including those of Nelson himself. The Old Admiral’s House (named after Nelson) is now a museum with marine pictures, charts, clay pipes, models and Arawak Indian Relics. Create priceless memories For the more adventurous, take a helicopter ride to the active volcano, Monserrat. After lying dormant for half a century, the volcano rumbled to life in 1995 and has been active since. This is a rare opportunity to see an active volcano and the beautiful landscapes of Antigua.

It boasts beautiful luxury hotels, restaurants and spas and is extremely popular with both locals and western tourists. You can find traditional Arabic restaurants and luxurious boutique shopping on JBR. The Ritz has probably one of the best Spa’s in Dubai. After your massage you can relax on their private beach - bliss! Don’t be surprised to see the all the super cars around each corner. Aston Martin, Lamborghini, Bugatti all parade up and down JBR. Lamborghinis are even used by the Emirati police. Must do’s Try high tea at the Burj al Arab - the world’s only 7* hotel.
