Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.

1. Merciful and gracious Lord, we pray that you will always keep the memory of our good friends forever bright in our hearts. Lord, in your mercy: Hear our prayer. 2. Forgive them any faults they may have had or mistakes they may have made, just as you forgive us the faults we have and the mistakes we make. Lord, in your mercy: Hear our prayer. 3. Grant them peace and joy in your heavenly realm with the company of all your saints and angels. Lord, in your mercy: Hear our prayer. 4. Comfort those whom they have left behind with the calm assurance of your unending love and compassion. Lord, in your mercy: Hear our prayer. 5. We pray for all those in the Brooks School family who have lost loved ones this past year. Lord, grant them strength in their sorrow and joy in the memories of the love they shared. Lord, in your mercy: Hear our prayer.
Reading No. 2 — Excerpt, Frank D. Ashburn 1930s address Associate Head of School for Faculty Affairs John McVeigh H’16 What was it Jesus was saying? Just this: Love is the greatest thing in the world. It is the only thing big enough to withstand and eventually conquer the shocks of life. And love begins and grows from giving, not receiving. Love lives best where kindness is. Presents are good, manners are good, but love seeketh not her own; love tends to the wants of others; love is thoughtful, gentle and humble. The greatest happiness in love comes in making someone else happy. And the surest way to love is to put oneself out for others. It does not matter what age or in what walk of life we are. The way to goodness is to be good. The way to heaven is by being understanding and kind. It is simply the law of life that the only way we can overcome grief or truly express our joy is to give up ourselves to others. The service which is perfect freedom begins with little things; with small, thoughtful actions; with quiet, kindly words. It is not enough to talk; one must be and do.
Benediction
School Minister Jim Chapman
The School Hymn 1. Father of all below, above, Whose Name is Light, whose Name is Love, Here be Thy truth and goodness known, And make these fields and halls Thine own. 2. Thy temple gates stand open wide; O Christ, we enter at Thy side With Thee to consecrate our powers, And make our Father’s business ours. 3. For days of drought which yet shall be, On untrod land, on unsailed sea, We kneel and fill our cup of youth At these fair fountains of Thy truth.
4. O world, all bright and brave and young, With deeds unwrought and sounds unsung, For all the strength Thy tasks will give We greet Thee, we, about to live. 5. Father, Thy children bless the care Which sheds Thy sunlight everywhere. Shine on our school and let us be Teachers and scholars taught by Thee.
Amen.
