Brookwood School District 167
Spirit of Brookwood -- Summer Edition
From the Superintendent, Bethany A. Lindsay Brookwood School District 167 Community: We hope you are enjoying the summer. When each school year comes to a close, it is a time of reflection and a source of pride as we celebrate the tremendous perseverance, resilience, and accomplishments of our students, staff, and families. It is our goal that our school district is a place where every student feels safe, knows that they are loved and valued, and knows that they will be held to high expectations. It is exciting to plan for a new school year and we are enthusiastic about a fresh new beginning. When I look back at this school year, I am grateful for all that the Board of Education has done to support our students, staff, and community. I hope you will feel the same sense of pride for the voluntary service each Board Member gives to support our school community. Below are just a few things our dedicated Board of Education has accomplished this past school year:

TITLE I FUND EXPENDITURES SUPPORT TEACHING AND LEARNING The ESEA (Elementary and Secondary Education Act) Title I Funds are used in a variety of ways to support teaching and learning in Brookwood School District 167. One of the ways is by using the funds to purchase intervention programs such as Read 180, iRead, Math 180, and Do the Math. These programs are available for students needing support in reading and math from Grades K through 8 on a daily basis. All teachers using the programs receive onsite, job-embedded training and coaching in using the programs with fidelity. Title I Funds have also been used for supplemental digital resource programs such as Brain Pop and Flocabulary. Student materials such as handwriting workbooks, grammar workbooks, math and reading workbooks, classroom novels, classroom libraries, and student headphones have also been purchased. Title I Funds are used for assessment programs such as NWEA - Measures of Academic Progress and ESGI - Educational Software For Guiding Instruction. Professional development is provided to staff through book studies such as “Teach Like a Pirate” and “What Great Teachers Do Differently”. Funds are also used to partially support salaries for instructional coaches, library clerks, and a preschool coordinator. The Parent Institute Flyer, which is posted monthly on the District website, promotes family engagement ideas and opportunities. Title I funds ensure that all children have an opportunity to meet challenging state academic standards.

DREAMBOX MATH PROGRAM BUILDS MATH SKILLS DreamBox Math is a new software program available for all students in Grades K-8 accessible from home and at school. What is DreamBox? DreamBox is more than a learning tool - it’s a math program that is designed to adapt to each child, letting them drive their own learning while giving parents and teachers in-themoment data and valuable insights to ensure success. Immersive, interactive, learner-driven math lessons make students more confident and competent. Lessons are aligned with all state K-8 math standards. DreamBox integrates instruction and assessment before, during, and after each lesson so in-the-moment learning is deeply personalized for every student with the right lesson at the right time. DreamBox interacts with students as they solve problems, explore new concepts, and make decisions, then analyzes the data in real-time and changes the instructional support based on student needs. The program applies game-like experiences and interactions to make learning fun yet it is challenging and builds each student’s stamina and the perseverance needed for building life-long problem-solving math skills. Students are encouraged to complete one lesson everyday to build foundational skills, close achievement gaps, and build confidence!

Summary Brookwood District 167 continues to do a stellar job of ensuring balanced budgets while continuing to add programs and opportunities for its students. Covid as well as high inflation create an environment of significant fiscal uncertainty, both positively and negatively. The District needs to continue looking forward when making major decisions in order to maintain its tradition of sound fiscal practices.
