A Message From The Principal

Ms. Jill Larson As we begin the month of February, we will start to focus our attention to our upcoming Spring assessments. The Illinois Assessment of Readiness and our grade 8 Illinois Science Assessment are just around the corner. Please take time to talk with your child about the importance of these assessments. It is important to all of us involved that we do our best so the community can see how hard our students have been working and parents can see academic growth over the past year. I am very proud of the work our students are completing. As the various testing sessions approach, please look for information coming home with your students such as daily homework and study guides to better prepare them. Students should also be reading and reviewing notes and assignments each night. As we prepare for testing, we will be discussing proficiency by explaining to students the importance of doing well on these assignments and assessments. Our teachers and students have worked very hard during the first semester, and we are proud of the time and effort committed to their success. We would also like to thank our parents for their continued support. Please be sure to review your students’ second-quarter grades, and do not hesitate to contact your students’ teachers, our social worker, or administration with any questions. It is also important to make sure that all of our students maintain their academic focus in order to acquire the skills for the next grade level. Please check with your students daily to ensure assignments are completed and turned in on time. We want to continue to stress again the important of school attendance. I have included another copy of our attendance policy in this newsletter. At Brookwood Jr. High School, we are excited to celebrate Black History Month and we have many activities, fieldtrips and assemblies planned this month in celebration. Additionally, teachers will be implementing engaging activities around the topic of Black History to supplement our curriculum throughout the month. We invite parents and family members to come out and celebrate with us on February 28th as many of our 7th and 8th grade students will be performing at our annual “Black History Celebration” beginning at 1:15 p.m. Please come out and show your support for our talented students! If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school office at (708) 758-5252 or e-mail me at jlarson@brookwood167.org. Ms. Jill Larson Principal, Brookwood Junior High School

GET INVOLVED! CONFLICT RESOLUTION TRAINING... Conflict Resolution Training for all 7th Graders! Research shows that when conflict occurs in middle school environments, students affected often lack the developmental maturity and interpersonal skills necessary to ensure healthy outcomes without adult guidance. Our hope that once trained, students will have the needed skills to help resolve any conflicts they might encounter throughout life.

ATTENDANCE POLICY All students are expected to be in regular attendance in accordance with the compulsory attendance requirements as established in the School Code of Illinois. Illinois School Code 105 ILCS 5/26-2a considers an absentee/tardy rate of more than 5% of the last (180) days to be excessive. Parents or legal guardians must call the school before 8:30 a.m. if their child is to be absent that day. An auto-answer service is available (24) hours. The number to call is 708-757-2100 ext. 5400. Call the school direct, 708-757-2100, between 8:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. Parents who do not call school will receive a telephone call at home or at work to verify their child’s absence. In the event no one can be reached, a call may be placed to the local police to visit the residence to assure your child’s safety. This is done for the safety and welfare of each child and is required by the School Code of Illinois.

In the event of a prolonged illness or contagious disease, a permission slip to return, signed by the child’s physician, is requested. Perfect attendance awards are issued to those students who have not been absent throughout the school year. To qualify, a child must have been enrolled for at least one (1) semester. Attendance is defined as each and every day school is in session. Students who are frequently absent often miss important information being taught, fall behind, and lose interest in school. An improvement in attendance may help a child achieve better grades and feel better about himself/herself.

PLEASE HELP YOUR CHILD GET TO SCHOOL ON TIME EACH AND EVERY DAY.
